Billboard has named Katy Perry the 2012 Billboard Woman of the Year. The popular Grammy nominated singer will receive the award at the 2012 Billboard Women in Music event to be held November 30, 2012 in New York City. According to Billboard, the award is given to a “trailblazing female recording artist over the past 12 months, and acknowledges her overall success in the music business and her leadership in embracing the changing industry.”

Past award recipients include Beyonce, Fergie and Taylor Swift.

“Katy Perry broke into the industry not even five years ago, and has already accomplished more than most artists can hope for in an entire career,” stated Bill Werde, Billboard’s editorial director, announcing the award. “We are thrilled to celebrate these incredible achievements and her amazing past 12 months by honoring her with the Billboard Woman of the Year Award. With what seems like a never-ending supply of record-breaking, chart-topping hits, coupled with her unique and fresh style, Katy Perry is hands-down one of the most exciting and inspiring artists in the industry today.”

Katy Perry’s accomplishments:
– The only woman to have five Hot 100 #1s from one album (Teenage Dream)
– Most consecutive weeks (69) with at least one song on the Hot 100 Top 10 list
– “Firework,” “California Gurls,” “E.T.” and “Hot N Cold” are among the top 30 selling downloads of all time
– Her documentary, Katy Perry Part of Me, is the fourth biggest music documentary of all time

Her 2011 California Dreams Tour sold out 124 arenas and was the subject of her documentary film. That tour also earned money for The Children’s Health Fund, Generosity Water and The Humane Society, with a portion of the ticket sales donated to assist those charities. The Red Cross also was the beneficiary of money from Perry’s tour via merchandise sales.
