Andy Serkis on Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, Performance Capture Work, and Directing

Andy Serkis Interview
Andy Serkis at the 2014 CinemaCon in Vegas
Andy Serkis reprises his role as ‘Caesar’ in the sequel to Rise of the Planet of the Apes, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, coming to theaters on July 11, 2014 and co-starring Jason Clarke, Keri Russell, and Gary Oldman. More than any other actor, Serkis knows the ins and outs of performance capture work having donned the special suits to play Gollum, King Kong, and Caesar. But when asked about the lack of recognition by awards groups when it comes to performance capture roles, Serkis said he didn’t believe that work done in that format should be considered any differently than any other performance. He also talked about Caesar’s evolution in this second Planet of the Apes movie, saying good-bye to Gollum, and preparing to take on directing feature films in our interview from the 2014 CinemaCon in Vegas.

The Dawn of the Planet of the Apes Plot:

A growing nation of genetically evolved apes led by Caesar is threatened by a band of human survivors of the devastating virus unleashed a decade earlier. They reach a fragile peace, but it proves short-lived, as both sides are brought to the brink of a war that will determine who will emerge as Earth’s dominant species.
