The cast of Warner Bros. Pictures’ Blue Beetle has increased by one, with pop star Becky G signing on to provide the voice of Khaji-Da. The studio’s official casting announcement included the following description of Khaji-Da:

“In the film, Khaji-Da is a beautiful relic of ancient alien biotechnology. The palm-sized obsidian-like Scarab is one of the most powerful artifacts in the universe, pulsing with iridescent streaks of bluish and purple. Jaime comes across it quite by accident, but once it has chosen him as a host, the Scarab bestows Jaime with a suit that is both organic and technological, and a symbiotic connection transforms the college grad into the almighty Super Hero Blue Beetle.”

Becky G (Rebbeca Marie Gomez) is the latest addition to a cast that is led by Cobra Kai‘s Xolo Maridueña in the titular role. The comic book-inspired film also stars Adriana Barraza (Rambo: Last Blood) as Jaime’s grandmother, Nana, and Damían Alcázar (Narcos: Mexico) as his father. Raoul Max Trujillo (Mayans M.C.) stars as Carapax, Oscar winner Susan Sarandon (Dead Man Walking) is Victoria Kord, and George Lopez (The George Lopez Show) is Jaime’s Uncle Rudy.

Elpidia Carrillo (the Predator films) plays Jaime’s mother, Bruna Marquezine (God Save the King) is Jenny Kord, Belissa Escobedo (American Horror Stories) is Jaime’s sister, Milagro, and Harvey Guillén (What We Do in the Shadows) plays Dr. Sanchez.

Soto (Charm City Kings, The Farm) directs from a screenplay by Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer (Miss Bala). Pawel Pogorzelski (Midsommar) is the director of photography, John Billington (Bad Boys for Life) is the production designer, Craig Alpert (Deadpool 2) is the editor, and Kelvin McIlwain (The Suicide Squad) is the visual effects supervisor.

Blue Beetle marks the first time the DC superhero’s been brought to life on the big screen. Warner Bros. has set an August 18, 2023 theatrical release.
