‘Orphan: First Kill’ Trailer: What’s Up with Esther?

Isabelle Fuhrman reprises her role as the psychotic main character from the 2009 film Orphan in the prequel, Orphan: First Kill, which just unveiled a lengthy trailer. The original film starred Fuhrman (then 12 years old) playing a nine-year-old masquerading as the lost daughter of a couple played by Peter Sarsgaard and Vera Farmiga. The big twist was that Esther wasn’t actually their daughter and she wasn’t nine; she was in her 30s.

The prequel subs in Rossif Sutherland (Catastrophe) and Julia Stiles (Jason Bourne) for Sarsgaard and Farmiga. However, Fuhrman once again slips into the role of Esther, this time as an adult playing a child playing an adult.

“We didn’t use special effects, we didn’t use any crazy makeup tricks. And I think that’s what makes the movie work, is because you really can’t figure out how I look like a [9-year-old], but I do. And it’s really creepy,” said Fuhrman in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter.

The original film was directed by Jaume Collet-Serra (Jungle Cruise, Black Adam) and William Brent Bell (The Boy, The Boy II) directs the sequel. David Coggeshall wrote the screenplay.

Orphan: First Kill will be released in select theaters, on digital, and on Paramount+ on August 19, 2022.
