300: Rise of an Empire Rises Above $200 Million

300: Rise of an Empire PosterWarner Bros Pictures’ 300: Rise of an Empire made it over the $200 million mark at the box office on its ninth day in theaters. The action epic starring Sullivan Stapleton opened in theaters on March 7, 2014 and went past the $200 million mark on March 15th. Domestically, the 300 sequel brought in $78.3 million while internationally the tally stood at $158 million as of Saturday night.
 
Dan Fellman, President of Domestic Distribution, made the announcement, saying, “Congratulations to the filmmakers and cast, who created a thrilling action adventure that not only drew fans of the original 300, but ignited interest from moviegoers who might even have been too young to see the first film on the big screen. With strong word of mouth, especially on social media, we expect the film to continue to play strong in the weeks ahead.”
 
“This is a great start for 300: Rise of an Empire, which was released day-and-date in 58 markets with terrific results. As proven by number one openings in major markets around the world, including the UK, Mexico, Russia, Germany, Italy, Spain, Korea Brazil and Australia, the film’s fantastic action delivers across the board and in all languages,” said aVeronika Kwan Vandenberg, President of International Distribution, Warner Bros. Pictures.


Of the $236 million total, $11.4 million was earned domestically from IMAX screenings. Internationally, IMAX screenings accounted for $9.4 million of 300: Rise of an Empire‘s box office total.
 
In addition to Sullivan Stapleton, the cast includes Eva Green, Lena Headey, Hans Matheson, Callan Mulvey, Jack O’Connell and Rodrigo Santoro. Noam Murro directed from a screenplay by 300 director Zack Snyder and Kurt Johnstad.
 
The Plot:
 
The story pits the Greek general Themistokles against the massive invading Persian forces, ruled by the mortal-turned-god Xerxes, and led by Artemisia, the vengeful commander of the Persian navy. Knowing his only hope of defeating the overwhelming Persian armada will be to unite all of Greece, Themistokles ultimately leads the charge that will change the course of the war.
