Family audiences turned out to check out Goosebumps in theaters, with the film’s opening weekend slightly over-performing its pre-release estimates while taking the number one spot away from the high-flying The Martian. The Martian‘s domestic box office take stands at $143 million after this weekend and it’ll likely wind up being Ridley Scott’s biggest box office film by the time it ends its release in North American theaters.

Meanwhile, Guillermo del Toro’s Crimson Peak just didn’t catch on with audiences. Even with a top-notch cast led by Tom Hiddleston, Charlie Hunnam, Jessica Chastain, and Mia Wasikowska, Crimson Peak failed to make an impression at the domestic box office ringing up just $12.8 million over its first three days in theaters.
