20th Century Fox’s The Martian was this|close to beating Gravity‘s opening weekend numbers, but wound up falling slightly short of Gravity‘s record-setting first weekend. The Martian posted a $55 million domestic opening weekend while Gravity‘s $55.7 million remains in the top spot for an October weekend. The Martian also had to settle for the number two spot in two other categories: Matt Damon’s opening weekend and Ridley Scott openers. Still, Fox has to be happy with the box office reception and with the critical response to the film as well as the positive word of mouth. The Martian should have a good run in theaters, with next weekend’s new releases – Pan and The Walk – not generating that much interest in advance of their wide release.
