Freeform officially confirmed Shadowhunters will not be returning for a fourth season and issued a statement about their plans for the series’ finale. The network still plans to air the second half of season three and has added a special two-hour finale to the end of the season’s run in order to wrap up storylines.

The second half of season three consists of 12 new episodes and will air in the spring of 2019. The network’s given this upcoming final half of season two a new title: Shadowhunters: The Final Hunt.

“We are very proud of Shadowhunters, a series that broke new ground in the genre world and became a fan favorite. However, along with our partners at Constantin, we reached the very difficult decision not to renew the show for a fourth season. But, as big supporters and fans ourselves, Freeform insisted on and championed the filming of a special two-part finale that would give devoted fans a proper ending. The twelve episodes will air in spring of 2019. We want to thank our talented creators, producers, cast and crew along with our colleagues at Constantin for their hard work and dedication and to Cassie Clare for her incredible book series. We look forward to the final chapter of this breakthrough drama,” read a statement from Freeform.

Shadowhunters season three stars Katherine McNamara as Clary Fray, Dominic Sherwood as Jace Wayland, Alberto Rosende as Simon Lewis, Emeraude Toubia as Isabelle Lightwood, Matthew Daddario as Alec Lightwood, Isaiah Mustafa as Luke Garroway, Alisha Wainwright as Maia Roberts, and Harry Shum Jr. as Magnus Bane. Todd Slavkin, Darren Swimmer, McG, Matt Hastings, Mary Viola, Martin Moszkowicz and Robert Kulzer served as executive producers.

Addressing the cancellation news on Twitter, series star Katherine McNamara tweeted:

McNamara added, “Don’t forget, angels, our journey is not over yet. We still have 12 episodes to go and more story to tell. We’ll share BTS photos, live tweet, and much more. Thank you for your love and support! Together we’ll make this memorable. x”

Dominic Sherwood also posted his thoughts on Twitter: “All good things come to an end. It has been my privelidge to be a part of this world. @ShadowhuntersTV team have been so close to my heart for 3 years. You. The fans. Make us happy and strong and proud. Thank you. For everything. We say goodbye with a heavy heart but our heads held high. We love you. Forever and always. Xx”

Matthew Daddario wrote a series of tweets to discuss the ending of the series and the support of fans. “It has been an absolutely wonderful experience getting to be part of Shadowhunters for the past three years. After all of it, I hope I have fulfilled my promise of being the best Alec Lightwood you could ask for. Look out for the great work this crew will be doing out of Toronto in the future, and look out for the great work from @FreeformTV, @Kat_McNamara, @DomSherwood1, @arosende, @EmeraudeToubia, @HarryShumJr, @isaiahmustafa, @mattdirector, @WainwrightAE, @DavidLCastro_, @alanvansprang, @willtudor1 and obviously whoever I’m leaving out because typing in these names of amazing actors is overwhelming.
