Three-time Tony Award winner Billy Porter and eight-time Oscar nominee Glenn Close are the latest stars to sign on to The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping. Lionsgate announced Close will play Drusilla Sickle, the cruel escort to the District 12 Tributes. Porter is on board as Magno Stift, her estranged husband and the Tributes’ uninspired designer.
“Glenn Close is a dream Drusilla. She brings so much of her intellect and imagination to each role, creating characters who are unforgettable and iconic. I think Glenn and Francis [Lawrence] will have a ball bringing Drusilla from the page to the screen,” stated producer Nina Jacobson.
Jacobson had this to say about Billy Porter’s casting: “Billy is one of those rare performers who can dazzle and devastate in equal measure on stage and screen. He made an indelible impression on me when we worked together on Pose, both as an actor and a human being. Casting this show has felt like winning the lottery every time one of our idols said yes to us. To be able to announce Glenn Close and Billy Porter together is an embarrassment of riches that we can all celebrate.”
Joseph Zada, Whitney Peak, Mckenna Grace, Jesse Plemons, Kelvin Harrison Jr., Maya Hawke, Lili Taylor, and Ben Wang were previously announced to star, along with Ralph Fiennes, Elle Fanning, and Kieran Culkin.
Francis Lawrence directs and Billy Ray is adapting Suzanne Collins’ bestseller. Jacobson and Brad Simpson serve as producers, with Cameron MacConomy executive producing.
“The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping revisits the world of Panem twenty-four years before the events of The Hunger Games, starting on the morning of the reaping of the Fiftieth Hunger Games, also known as the Second Quarter Quell,” reads Lionsgate’s synopsis. Collins’ novel was published on March 18, 2025 and sold more than 1.5 million copies over its first week.

Max’s critically acclaimed medical drama The Pitt starring Noah Wyle has started production on season two. Season one premiered on January 9, 2025 and currently sits at 95% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes. Season two is targeting a January 2026 debut.
Noah Wyle serves as an executive producer and stars as Dr. Michael “Robby” Robinavitch. Season one’s cast also included Tracey Ifeachor as Dr. Collins, Patrick Ball as Dr. Langdon, Katherine LaNasa as Dana Evans, Supriya Ganesh as Dr. Mohan, Fiona Dourif as Dr. McKay, Taylor Dearden as Dr. King, Isa Briones as Dr. Santos, Gerran Howell as Whitaker, and Shabana Azeez as Javadi.
R. Scott Gemmill created the series that Max describes as “a realistic examination of the challenges facing healthcare workers in today’s America as seen through the lens of the frontline heroes working in a modern-day hospital in Pittsburgh.”
In addition to Gemmill and Wyle, executive producers include John Wells, Michael Hissrich, Erin Jontow, and Simran Baidwan. The series is produced by John Wells Productions in association with Warner Bros. Television.

Production is taking place on the Warner Bros. lot in Burbank. The exteriors will be shot on location in Pittsburgh, PA.
Apple TV+’s Murderbot continues with episode seven, “Complementary Species.” The preview clip shows Mensah trying to help the titular character as a debate rages over whether it’s a danger to the group. Episode seven premieres on Friday, June 20, 2025.
The series stars Alexander Skarsgård as the titular character, Noma Dumezweni (Presumed Innocent) as Mensah, David Dastmalchian (Oppenheimer) as Gurathin, Sabrina Wu (Joy Ride) as Pin-Lee, Akshay Khanna (Critical Incident) as Ratthi, Tattiawna Jones (The Handmaid’s Tale) as Arada, and Tamara Podemski (Outer Range) as Bharadwaj. Skarsgård also executive produces along with series creators Chris and Paul Weitz.
“Complementary Species” Plot: While hiding in a remote forest from their pursuers, the PresAux team debates whether Murderbot is trying to kill them or protect them. Two hostiles appear, leaving something unexpected behind. Murderbot faces its nemesis again, and Gurathin’s health takes a turn for the worse.

For those skeptical of a new The Naked Gun film, the official trailer might set your mind at ease a little. The two-minute promo shows that the 2025 version, centering around the children of the original film’s main characters, captures the vibe of the 1988 comedy.
Liam Neeson, Pamela Anderson, Paul Walter Hauser, CCH Pounder, Kevin Durand, and Cody Rhodes star. Liza Koshy, Eddie Yu, and Danny Huston also star in the reboot of the comedy franchise.
“Only one man has the particular set of skills… to lead Police Squad and save the world! Lt. Frank Drebin Jr. (Neeson) follows in his father’s footsteps,” reads Paramount Pictures’ synopsis.
Akiva Schaffer (Saturday Night Live, Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping) directs and co-wrote the screenplay with Dan Gregor and Doug Mand. Seth MacFarlane and Erica Huggins serve as producers. Schaffer, Daniel M. Stillman, Pete Chiappetta, Anthony Tittanegro, and Andrew Lary are executive producers.
The Naked Gun opens in theaters on August 1, 2025.
The third and final season of Netflix’s Squid Game dropped a final trailer that teases the epic showdown between Player 456 and The Front Man. Season two debuted on December 26, 2024, and season three arrives on June 27, 2025.

DreamWorks is jumping on the bandwagon of live-action remakes with their latest film, a live-action remake of 2010’s animated hit How to Train Your Dragon. It’s not a retooling or a reimagining of the story of a teenage Viking named Hiccup and his best friend, a fire-breathing dragon. No, it’s a straight remake, just with living actors and CGI dragons.
The story is the same as the animated classic. Set on the island of Berk, Hiccup (Mason Thames, The Black Phone) strikes and wounds the most dangerous dragon of all…the dreaded Night Fury… during a dragon attack. No one sees it happen, so of course no one believes him because, well, Hiccup just isn’t like his father, Viking Chief Stoick (once again played by Gerard Butler).
The day after the battle, Hiccup sets off to find the Night Fury. When he finally does, he can’t bring himself to kill the helpless dragon. So instead, he frees him. Thus begins a friendship between the young Viking and the dragon, transforming sworn enemies as they start to learn from each other and work together to get Toothless, Hiccup’s name for the Night Fury, flying once again.
While Hiccup trains with his dragon in secret, he’s also learning how to fight dragons to the death back at his village. Working with Toothless, he learns techniques and tricks to ward off dragons and to make them listen. He becomes the star pupil, which enrages Astrid (Nico Parker, Suncoast) who was, until Hiccup’s strange uptick in skills, the best fighter among the young Vikings.
It’s when Hiccup and Toothless are flying together, along with a shocked and upset but starting to come around Astrid, that they discover the nest of dragons. They also find the giant, ancient dragon that threatens both their worlds. It then falls on Hiccup and Toothless to find a way to bring Vikings and dragons together if they are to have any hope of survival.
With the same director (Dean DeBlois) as the original animated trilogy at the helm, an almost identical script, and impressive-looking production sets, the live-action How to Train Your Dragon remake is a visual spectacle that, sadly, fails to capture the heart and emotion of the original film. It’s a soulless incarnation.
Gerard Butler is one of the best elements in the film, reprising his role as Stoick and looking just like the character did in the original. Butler owns this role and knows exactly how to play it. He also has solid chemistry with Thames as Hiccup in their shared scenes.
Mason Thames does a great job bringing Hiccup to life, looking almost identical to the animated character and at times sounding like Jay Baruchel, the voice of Hiccup in the animated films. He delivers a memorable performance opposite the CGI and puppet Toothless, making the creature seem almost real.
Nico Parker is horribly miscast as Astrid, the mighty Viking fighter who at first disdains Hiccup but after learning his secret (and getting a dragon ride) begins to fall for him. Parker’s delivery of her lines lacks impact, giving the impression that she is struggling to recite her dialogue. Plus, Parker and Mason have absolutely no chemistry.
The flying scenes are another problem, with quick camera cuts and herky-jerky movement. The movie fails to create the feeling for the audience of soaring with Toothless and Hiccup as the original did so brilliantly.
The puppet and CGI dragons do look exactly like the dragons in the original film but simply don’t capture the personalities of Toothless and the other dragons. The cute and lovable factor is missing.
DreamWorks’ live-action How to Train Your Dragon remake is a well-crafted, faithful adaptation of the original. And that’s the problem. It’s too faithful. The live-action version doesn’t offer anything new and is missing the animated film’s heart. It’s an unnecessary remake that feels like a cash grab.

The History Channel kicks off Alone season 12 with an episode focusing on just five of the 10 survivalists: Pablo Arguelles, Kelsey Loper, Jit Patel, Will Lamb, and Katie Rydge. The new season, which premiered on June 12, 2025, takes place in South Africa’s Great Karoo Desert, an area known as the Cradle of Mankind. The desert stretches 153,000 square acres and takes up around one-third of South Africa.
By the end of season 12 episode one, one survivalist has snagged their first meat, while another makes a decision to tap out due to health reasons. The following recap, divided up by featured survivalists, is full of spoilers. Read on only if you’ve watched the episode.
Katie Rydge: Age 45, Emerald Beach, AUS
Day 1, Afternoon – Katie wonders what’s going on with everyone else. She sees a fish jump and throws in a line. She admits she hasn’t thought about where to sleep yet.
11:09pm – Katie reels in an orange river mudfish, prepares it, and cooks it up for dinner.
Day 2, 8:31am – She harvests a breakfast of acacia seeds to go with her fish soup. Katie believes she can keep catching fish and will supplement with plant food. She’s a mom of two, and her world revolves around running a school for nature philosophy. Katie’s been passionate about it for 20 years and has bow hunting, fishing, shelter construction, and trap-making skills. As an Aussie, she’s had experience in arid environments.
Winning would allow her to buy a house for her kids.
While plucking seeds, she smells urine in the wind. She spots warthogs, but they run away too quickly. Katie doesn’t want to follow them because they’ll never come back. She spots a well-used trail and knows they’ll be back.

Will Lamb: Age 31, Leakey, Texas
Day 1, 9:43am – Will swears he won’t experience drop shock, but time will tell. He reminds himself to play it cool and decides water is his priority. He’s an exotic trapper by trade and calls himself a “primitive enthusiast.” Will believes his skills hunting, ambushing, and making blinds will take him far. He left his wife and son at home to compete, with the goal of providing for his family.
Will immediately begins processing water to make it safe to drink. It’s 77 degrees as Will explains the water is horrible since animals use it as a restroom. The History Channel (THC) notes the survivalists need to watch out for cholera, salmonella, and E. coli. He sets up a tripod to hang his water bucket and reveals he’ll always have a pot of water boiling or cooling. As his water boils, Will heads off to set up a fishing line.
Day 2, 9:01am – Baboons watch his movements, and he imitates their holler. He decides to take his bow and try and convince them to leave the area. Will’s never interacted with baboons before but knows they are real problems. They have a reputation for messing up camps, so he decides to stay relatively close to his.
While checking out the baboons, he spots what could be two Cape buffalo as well as a herd of kudu. One big kudu bull is particularly close by but runs off. Will’s okay with that because it’s too big of an animal too early in the competition. However, he’s happy this seems to be a popular spot for wildlife.

Kelsey Loper: Age 35, Winnett, Montana
Day 1, 10:26am – Kelsey sets up camp on a little beach and then goes for a walkabout. She reminds herself to be careful of the rocky ground and confesses she can’t believe she’s on Alone. Hunting is her priority, and she spots baboon tracks, which could be a problem. She uses her camera that she named Karen to touch some baboon stool and confirms it’s dry.
Kelsey lives off-grid and has an outhouse for a bathroom. She claims her primary skills are hunting, fishing, and fire building. She’ll use the prize money to rescue more burros and Mustangs. Kelsey, who runs the non-profit Long Acres Rescue, wants to demonstrate that women are stronger than they believe.
Baboons screaming distract her, and she spots a bunch on a nearby ridge. THC points out that baboons have teeth longer than leopards, and Kelsey explains that baboons play dead to lure in prey that others can then attack. The baboons seem to be following her until she screams at them to go away.
Kelsey claims she’s not afraid of any animals other than baboons. When she returns to her camping spot, she’s happy the baboons haven’t paid her a visit. Her camp is under an acacia tree with thorns that should keep the baboons away.
Late Afternoon: She talks to Karen the camera about the moon, admitting it’s wild to sleep under the stars in South Africa. Kelsey grew up in Northern Wisconsin and doesn’t mind the cold.
Day 2, 10:32am – Kelsey’s happy she survived the night without a baboon attack. She does her morning pushups and then heads out for a walk. Kelsey brought a 50 lb. bow, which by the rules means she can only shoot medium and small game. She finds fresh scat and follows the trail. She’s almost at the top of the hill when she sees a waterbuck. Unfortunately, it requires a 60 lb. bow, so she can’t shoot it.
She hears something bark but has no idea what it is. Suddenly, she spots a warthog and reminds herself repeatedly to be patient since they can’t see well but have sharp tusks. Kelsey’s shaking as she takes her first shot.
She hits the warthog, but it’s not a kill shot. Kelsey apologizes as she finishes the job. It’s her first recurve kill ever because she normally uses a compound bow. She’s proud of the kill but concerned over the sun wrecking the meat. The warthog is very heavy, and she needs to get it to camp half a mile away as soon as possible.
Kelsey’s concerned about flies laying eggs on the meat and about it spoiling before she can maneuver the warthog to her camp. The only option is to gut and quarter it where it was shot. She’s determined to be respectful to the animal and not waste anything. THC informs us that Kelsey could get 55 pounds of meat from the warthog.
2:32pm – She manages to eventually get it back to camp and immediately starts working on a smoker. She found part of a bluebush tree and builds an open tripod smoker. She’ll use bluebush sticks as a rack, since they burn slowly.
Kelsey’s going to eat the warthog backstrap for dinner. But first she needs to keep the ants away from the meat. Kelsey decides to sleep next to her meat to protect it and will store it temporarily between two layers of her tarp.
5:07pm – The first bite of warthog confirms it’s a little overcooked, but Kelsey remembers she can use salt to improve the taste. Salt was one of her 10 items. THC reports that 50 grams of warthog contain 11 grams of protein. And it tastes sour and fishy.

Pablo Arguelles: Age 55, Jacksonville, Florida
Day 1, 11:14am – Pablo’s got a walking stick to poke for venomous snakes, since there are 20 types of deadly ones in the area. He finds cape buffalo scat as he reveals he’s originally from Cuba. Pablo can build different types of shelters and is proficient at hunting, trapping, and trapping.
He quit his job to participate in Alone and is proud to be the first Cuban competitor. Pablo points out the nasty water and knows he’ll have to be extremely careful. He makes a coyote well, which is a hole a few feet from the water that fills up and is filtered by the earth. Water begins to seep in, so he hopes it will work.
5:12pm – Pablo creates a temporary lean-to with his tarp, careful to use part as a floor to keep the scorpions away.
8:02pm – He’s kept awake by all the animal noises, as are multiple survivalists.
Day 2, 9:49am – Pablo heads to the water’s edge and discovers his coyote well has been swallowed up by the lake. The water is really contaminated, and he uses his bandana to help filter it while collecting some. It’s still hot when he takes his first sip.

Jit Patel: Age 35, Anakiwa, New Zealand
Day 1, 1:44pm – Jit’s happy with the spot he’s been dropped in since it’s close to water. One of his items is a water bottle, because he’s concerned about always having clean water. He spots a prickly pear, and a rock also catches his eye, but it turns out to be a huge baboon. THC reports baboons can run 30mph.
He’s spent hundreds of nights out in different conditions. Jit connected with nature as a teenager and believes in preparation, patience, and practice. Before going to university, he traveled to Asia and India. Ultimately, he settled down in Anakiwa, New Zealand, and works as an outdoor educator. Jit loves to push himself and will miss his partner, Madi, while he’s competing. “For me, Alone is that real opportunity to learn the things that I haven’t learned about me.”
He walks to what looks to be a prime fishing spot and uses a praying mantis for bait. THC reminds us participants can bring a total of 25 hooks. Jit confesses he will be thinking about clean water all the time and won’t touch a fish and then touch the bottle.
One of his hooks gets stuck in the water, but he’s able to retrieve it fairly easily. He opts for a prickly pear meal that will supply magnesium, calcium, potassium, and sodium. Jit’s careful not to eat the cactus’ barbed hairs and concentrates on scrubbing them off. He decides the prickly pear doesn’t taste that bad and will give him a boost.
Day 1, evening – Jit makes a quick shelter and won’t waste any energy on building anything better until he knows he can get more food for energy.
Day 3, 9:23am – His belly’s rumbling, so fish is top priority today. Jit scans the riverbank for crabs since 20 live in the area, not sure if they come on land. His stomach is giving him problems, and he’s forced to take a messy restroom break. Jit’s coastline exploring will have to wait because he’s not feeling well. He doesn’t know if it’s something he ate or that he’s not eating.
5:27pm – Jit experiences his first bout of vomiting and worries that he could be dehydrated. His stomach really hurts.
11:42pm – Jit wakes up with a cold head and an aching body. He knows he has to drink water, even though he doesn’t want to.
Day 4, 7:33am – It was a horrible night, and he soiled himself again. The stomach cramps continue, and he’s forced to tap out. He was told to trust his gut, and his partner told him to come back in one piece. Jit realizes he needs to do what’s best for his health. He’s disappointed to be leaving on day four.

Corpse Bride and Frankenweenie screenwriter John August is returning to LAIKA for the still untitled project directed by Pete Candeland. LAIKA did not confirm any details on when they expect production to get underway on the upcoming stop-motion animated film.
“I’m thrilled to be back in the world of stop-motion animation working with a team of incredible artisans telling stories one frame at a time,” stated August. “Truly everything about stop-motion is time-consuming and difficult, but the results have a texture and authenticity that can’t be replicated. You can feel the fingerprints of everyone who touched it.”
August’s credits include Charlie’s Angels, Titan A.E., Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle, and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. August was nominated for BAFTA and Critics Choice awards in 2004 for Big Fish. In 2006, August shared a Grammy nominated with Danny Elfman in the Best Song Written for Motion Picture, Television or Other Visual Media for “Wonka’s Welcome Song” from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
“Inspired by an original idea from Candeland, who joined LAIKA in 2023, the story revolves around a theatre-loving high school student who is lured into a mystifying never-ending bacchanal in search of her missing mother,” reads LAIKA’s synopsis.
Pete Candeland’s credits include music videos for Gorillaz, Rock Band game franchise spots, and BBC trailers.

Prime Video’s massive fantasy epic The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power has expanded its cast by three. Andrew Richardson is joining the production in a series regular role. Zubin Varla and Adam Young have boarded the series in recurring roles.
Prime Video’s announcement did not indicate who the three newcomers will be playing. They join previously announced new additions Jamie Campbell Bower (Stranger Things) and Eddie Marsan (Franklin).
“Jumping forward several years from the events of season two, season three takes place at the height of the War of the Elves and Sauron, as the Dark Lord seeks to craft the One Ring that will give him the edge he needs to win the war and conquer all Middle-earth at last,” reads Prime Video’s synopsis.
Production is currently underway at Shepperton Studios on the new season. Season one premiered on September 1, 2022. Season two debuted on August 29, 2024.
Andrew Richardson’s stage credits include Uncle Vanya and A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Zubin Varla’s television credits include Andor, Silent Witness, Deep State, Will, Our Girl, Strike Back, and Little Dorrit. The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Season 2 Interviews:

Paramount+’s medical drama SkyMed has officially been renewed for a fourth season. The streamer announced the series will return and confirmed the upcoming fourth season will consist of eight episodes.
Production is expected to get underway this summer. Paramount+ didn’t confirm when season four will premiere but did announce series regular Natasha Calis (Nurses) will be back as Hayley, Morgan Holmstrom (Outlander) will return as Crystal, Mercedes Morris (Ghosts) reprises her role as Lexi, Sydney Kuhne (Ginny & Georgia) will return as Stef, and Aaron Ashmore (Ginny & Georgia) will be back as Wheezer.

Julie Puckrin serves as an executive producer along with Gillian Hormel and Vanessa Piazza. Producers include Rhonda Baker and Carrie Wilkins.
