• Black Lightning: Jefferson Pierce (Cress Williams) is a man wrestling with a secret. As the father of two daughters and principal of a charter high school that also serves as a safe haven for young people in a neighborhood overrun by gang violence, he is a hero to his community. Nine years ago, Pierce was a hero of a different sort. Gifted with the superhuman power to harness and control electricity, he used those powers to keep his hometown streets safe as the masked vigilante Black Lightning. However, after too many nights with his life on the line, and seeing the effects of the damage and loss that his alter ego was inflicting on his family, he left his Super Hero days behind and settled into being a principal and a dad. Choosing to help his city without using his superpowers, he watched his daughters Anissa (Nafessa Williams) and Jennifer (China Anne McClain) grow into strong young women, even though his marriage to their mother, Lynn (Christine Adams), suffered. Almost a decade later, Pierce’s crime-fighting days are long behind him…or so he thought. But with crime and corruption spreading like wildfire, and those he cares about in the crosshairs of the menacing local gang The One Hundred, Black Lightning returns — to save not only his family, but also the soul of his community. David Tennant Brings Down the House at Awesome Con

David Tennant relentlessly pursued a career in acting ever since he was inspired by watching the long-running British science-fiction series Doctor Who as a kid. Not only did Tennant, 46, achieve his dream of becoming an actor, he also got to be Doctor Who, specifically the Tenth Doctor – that is, the 10th reincarnation of the Doctor from 2005-10 – who is the favorite of all the Doctors of many fans and critics alike.

For the uninitiated, the titular Doctor is an alien, particularly a centuries-old Time Lord who travels through space and time in his TARDIS (which resembles a police telephone box) with his Companions. When the Doctor is badly wounded, he has the ability to regenerate his body. However, by doing so, his physical appearance and personality changes as a new actor assumes the role. In Tennant’s case, he was preceded by Christopher Eccleston and succeeded by Matt Smith. Tennant grew up watching Tom Baker playing the Fourth Doctor, who was his favorite Doctor.

“It’s lovely playing the cleverest person in the room. He has all the best lines. He’s very enthusiastic… He has this enthusiasm and brilliance and intellectual heft. He doesn’t have rippling muscles, which appealed to me as a scrawny youth. Don’t get me wrong: I love the Incredible Hulk, too, but I never aspired to be him,” said the Scotland-born actor.

Tennant – along with fellow Doctor Who actors Catherine Tate (alias Donna Noble, one of the Tenth Doctor’s Companions) and John Barrowman (alias Captain Jack Harkness), as well as novelist Carole Barrowman (John’s older sister), Clare Kramer (alias Glory from Buffy the Vampire Slayer), Eliza Dushku (Faith from Buffy and Angel, Echo from Dollhouse), Marvel Comics founding father Stan Lee, among many other celebrity guests – appeared at Awesome Con from June 18-20, 2017 in Washington, D.C. More than 71,000 guests – record-breaking numbers – attended Awesome Con, which sold out on June 19.

Tennant participated in a Q&A panel on June 19, which was moderated by Dr. Grant Tremblay, an astrophysicist at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics in Cambridge, Mass; and Dr. Matthew Shindell, curator of planetary sciences at the Smithsonian Institution’s National Air & Space Museum in Washington, D.C. He addressed an enthusiastic crowd of 5,000 – the auditorium’s capacity – eliciting many laughs.

“Science-fiction is a language about who we are now and who we might be in the future,” said Shindell.

This led to Tennant describing the Doctor in his own words, stating that he knows pretty much everything, which is always coupled with this curiosity and enthusiasm to find out even more.

“(The Doctor) looks out for those who can’t look out for themselves. The fact he’s an alien allows him to be objective about human beings and how we treat each other. He sees the good points and banishes the bad… It seems credible we might get there some day,” said Tennant.

He also spoke about the suspension of disbelief regarding Doctor Who, such as the Doctor’s famed sonic screwdriver being able to scan an entire planet. He stated that the suspension of disbelief works best on the edge of “going bananas” rather than completely going over the edge into the preposterous.

When Tremblay stated that mankind would never be able to travel through time, much to the disappointment of the audience, Tennant looked at him and said “Killjoy,” to which the audience laughed long and loud.

During the panel, Tennant made fun of himself, particularly his 15-year-old sneakers, referring to them as ugly and scabby. When it was opened to questions from the audience, an audience member asked him if he could sing “These Boots Are Made for Walkin,’” Tennant replied with a blunt no.

One boy in a gas mask dressed up like the character from the 2005 Doctor Who episode “The Empty Child” who was looking for his mother approached the microphone.
Tennant said, “I know what your question is.”

“Are you my mummy?” asked the boy as the audience roared.

Tennant even joked about wanting to do a Shakespearean take on the Marvel Universe, asking everyone if they could imagine him doing Peter Parker (aka Spider-Man) in iambic pentameter. “Stan Lee is here. We’re gonna have a word,” said Tennant to many laughs.

An aspiring actress asked him for acting advice. Tennant give her three tips:
1). Don’t be late.
2). Learn your lines.
3). Don’t be an asshole.

“Pretty much the rest of it is luck,” said Tennant. “You keep doing it until it works or you quit doing it.”

He explained that one of the challenges of acting – no matter how successful one is in the profession – is getting a job. There’s a low level of panic that actors live with that never goes away because acting is a freelance job, according to Tennant.

In addition to playing the Tenth Doctor, he is currently playing Det. Alec Hardy in the final season of Broadchurch, the British crime drama. Other notable roles include the villain Kilgrave on Jessica Jones; Barty Crouch, Jr. in 2005’s Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire; the voice of Scrooge McDuck on Disney’s DuckTales; and a critically lauded stage performance of Shakespeare’s Hamlet.

Hamlet was the biggest challenge,” said Tennant. “There’s a lot of words. If you surrender to it, it takes you places, which is why it’s the most extraordinary role.”

While some people asked about his other roles, the subject inevitably returned to the Tenth Doctor. Asked how he separated himself from the Doctor at the end of the day, Tennant simply shrugged and answered, “You just do. You take the costume off and go home. There’s nothing magic about it – it’s part of the job. You compartmentalize as best as you can.”

Tennant also addressed preparing for the role of the Doctor. He stated tongue-in-cheek that he grew out his sideburns and learned his lines. “You can’t exactly research being a Time Lord,” he said. “I watched the show as a kid, so I was pretty steeped in it… You bring as much energy and creativity you can (to the role).”

The White PrincessJodie Comer has signed on to star in BBC America’s Killing Eve. Comer joins Sandra Oh (Grey’s Anatomy) in the original scripted series which will air in 2018. The eight episode dramatic series is based on Luke Jennings’ novellas and has Phoebe Waller-Bridge (Fleabag) on board as showrunner and executive producer. Sally Woodside Gentle and Lee Morris are also executive producing Killing Eve.

Sid Gentle Films Ltd is producing the project.

“Jodie Comer is amazing, and will capture the precise, genius psychopathy of the character Villanelle,” said BBC America President Sarah Barnett. “With Sandra Oh playing her foil and Phoebe Waller-Bridge as creator, there is a boatload of brilliance fueling this new show.”

The Plot: Killing Eve is a dramatic thriller revolving around a psychopathic assassin and the woman charged with hunting her down. It is a combination of brutal mischief making and pathos, filled with sharp humor, originality and high stakes action.

Killing Eve centers on two women; Eve (Oh) is a bored, whip-smart, pay-grade security services operative whose desk-bound job doesn’t fulfill her fantasies of being a spy. Villanelle (Comer) is an elegant, talented killer who clings to the luxuries her violent job affords her. Killing Eve topples the typical spy-action thriller as these two fiercely intelligent women, equally obsessed with each other, go head to head in an epic game of cat and mouse.

‘Yellowstone’ Adds Cole Hauser, Wes Bentley, Luke Grimes and Kelly Reilly

Paramount Network’s dramatic series, Yellowstone, has signed on Wes Bentley, Kelly Reilly, Luke Grimes and Cole Hauser in starring roles. Kevin Costner was previously confirmed to star in the scripted series set to begin shooting this summer in Utah. Oscar nominee Taylor Sheridan (Hell or High Water) is writing and directing the 10 episode series which is targeting a summer 2018 premiere.

John Linson, Art Linson, Taylor Sheridan, Kevin Costner, Harvey Weinstein and David Glasser are executive producing.

The Plot: Yellowstone follows the Dutton family, led by John Dutton (Costner), who controls the largest contiguous ranch in the United States, under constant attack by those it borders – land developers, an Indian reservation, and America’s first National Park. It is an intense study of a violent world far from media scrutiny — where land grabs make developers billions, and politicians are bought and sold by the world’s largest oil and lumber corporations. Where drinking water poisoned by fracking wells and unsolved murders are not news: they are a consequence of living in the new frontier. It is the best and worst of America seen through the eyes of a family that represents both.

Luke Grimes (American Sniper, The Magnificent Seven) joins as John Dutton’s youngest son Cory, an emotionally reserved ex-Navy SEAL who lives with his Native American wife and seven year old son on the reservation. Wes Bentley (American Beauty, Interstellar) will portray John’s other son Jamie, a polished lawyer considering a career in politics who continues to seek approval from his father despite his love for the limelight. Kelly Reilly (Flight) will play John’s daughter Beth, a smart and powerful woman who is always prepared to fight alongside her father. And Cole Hauser (Tigerland, White Oleander) is Rip Wheeler, a tough and merciless wrangler from Yellowstone Ranch who will stop at nothing to get the job done.

FX Networks has announced the premiere dates for You’re the Worst season four and Better Things season two. You’re the Worst will return to FXX’s primetime lineup on Wednesday, September 6, 2017 at 10pm ET/PT. Season four will kick off with a special one-hour premiere. Better Things will premiere its second season on FX on Thursday, September 14, 2017 at 10pm ET/PT.

You’re the Worst was created by executive producer Stephen Falk and stars Chris Geere as Jimmy, Aya Cash as Gretchen, Desmin Borges as Edgar, and Kether Donohue as Lindsay. Peabody Award-winner Better Things is written, directed, executive produced, and stars Pamela Adlon.

You’re the Worst Plot: You’re the Worst is a modern look at love and happiness told through the eyes of two people who haven’t been very successful with either. It’s the story of Gretchen and Jimmy, fear, heartbreak, romance, sex, food, Los Angeles, Sunday Funday, friendship, and the fact that sometimes the worst people make the best partners.

You’re the Worst puts a dark twist on the romantic comedy genre. Narcissistic, brash, and stubborn Jimmy Shive-Overly (Geere) has inadvertently found himself paired up with cynical, people-pleasing, and self-destructive Gretchen Cutler (Cash). After a whirlwind courtship, and a very rough post-cohabitation period of dealing with Gretchen’s clinical depression, Jimmy and Gretchen were forced to learn how to manage a relationship in the face of tragedy when Jimmy’s father unexpectedly died. Ultimately, drawn closer, Jimmy proposed and then suddenly disappeared when confronted with the notion that Gretchen would be his family. Now broken up, and involved with other people, both struggle to move on while constantly being pulled back toward one another.

Better Things Plot: Better Things centers on Sam Fox (Adlon), a single, working actor with no filter raising her three daughters, Max (Mikey Madison), Frankie (Hannah Alligood) and Duke (Olivia Edward) in Los Angeles. She’s mom, dad, referee and the cops. Sam also watches out for her mother, Phil (Celia Imrie), an English expatriate, who lives across the street. Sam is flawed and fierce with her love for her daughters, and her own mother, as well. Sometimes, heaping the love on when she feels guilty. Sam’s just trying to earn a living, navigate her daughters’ lives, have fun with a friend or two and also — just maybe — squeeze in some private time once in a while.
