‘Midnight, Texas’ – Arielle Kebbel and Jason Lewis Interview

NBC is set to premiere the supernatural drama Midnight, Texas on July 24, 2017 at 10pm ET/PT. The new series is based on the bestselling books by Charlaine Harris and stars Arielle Kebbel, Jason Lewis, Dylan Bruce, Francois Arnaud, Parisa Fitz-Henley, Sarah Ramos, and Yul Vazquez. Midnight, Texas is set in a small town that has an unusual collection of citizens including a vampire, a psychic, a witch, and a werewolf.

Kebbel plays Olivia, a mysterious assassin, and Lewis is an angel who helps protect the town. Together, Kebbel and Lewis talked about their roles in Midnight, Texas, the books, and the appeal of being a part of this new NBC series while at the 2017 WonderCon in Anaheim.

Are you going to be kicking a lot of butt in this season?

Arielle Kebbel: (Laughing) “I believe so.”

Olivia has some special skill sets that are interesting and yet she’s one of the few humans in the town. Will we find out more about her backstory?

Arielle Kebbel: “Yes. There’s definitely a backstory and actually as the season goes on, we learn about each character. Each character has a dark past and it’s kind of like that past has brought them to Midnight. With my character, she has had an incredibly traumatic childhood which has led her to not trusting people, to having huge anger issues, and also to doing what she does for a living.

What I loved about her is she does what she does because she’s fighting the good fight. She protects the people she loves. She doesn’t say I love you but she says it by protecting them. And so there’s still so much good in this person that’s had so much bad happen to them, and that’s what I love about her.”

Can you talk about Joe’s secret?

Jason Lewis: “We’re in Midnight to avoid the world and so many of us are there hiding our supernatural selves, if we can. Some of us can’t. [Looking at Arielle.] Like her, she’s just stunning. You can’t hide that.”

Arielle Kebbel: (Laughing) “I paid him to say that.”

Jason Lewis: “He’s there because he doesn’t want to engage the world at the level of being an angel. He is trying to live a life just simply.”

So he’ll be forced into using his powers?

Jason Lewis: “Well, dammit, things happen and you’ll just have to watch and find out why.”

What was it like the first time you saw the effects in place and yourself with those wings?

Jason Lewis: “Good, really good. You know, you’re hoping that it’s going to look good because I can’t control that. And I had to shoot the pilot scene in 27-degree weather.”

Arielle Kebbel: “Albuquerque weather is really tough.”

Jason Lewis: “Yeah, 27 degrees. So, you’re hoping. I did some body things and pretended like they were coming out of me, and I was hoping I didn’t look ridiculous and I didn’t – I looked great.”

Were you familiar with the books or did you read them after you were cast?

Arielle Kebbel: “I was not familiar with them before. When I auditioned I knew it was based on a book series so I was aware of them then. Once I got the part I immediately bought both books – the third one was on its way to coming out. And then when it came out I bought that as well and just started diving into research. I actually feel like every cast member read the books immediately.”

Jason Lewis: “Yeah, we jumped right in.”

Arielle Kebbel: “They did their own research.”

Jason Lewis: “I remember hounding Charlaine when she came for the pilot. Like, ‘Maybe we can get a sneak preview.’”

Arielle Kebbel: “That’s so funny. I was the opposite. I was so in love with her and so blown away that this woman wrote all of these books that I was like, ‘I’m not going to ask her anything. If she tells me to tweak anything, I will but otherwise I’m just going to love her and say hi and leave.’ I was kind of star struck!”

Did you do any specific type of training?

Arielle Kebbel: “I did two or three hours of training a day. I would go from weapon training to fight training to fight choreography to conditioning. I was doing everything from learning how to do different weapons to kickboxing, boxing. You name it. For me, it wasn’t just about the fight scenes. It was about Olivia lives in a world where she has to be prepared at any moment for anything. So, I wanted to feel that from the inside out. The only way I knew how to do that was to train myself not only to know these moves, but to also kind of live in a place where I could constantly feel I had the self-protection I needed. I had the self-defense I needed.

I told John who was our stunt trainer who taught me everything I know – he’s my man! – and he took it pretty seriously. He pushed me and pushed me and pushed me. I was taking ice baths and the next day when I didn’t want to work out, he would make me work out. He would bring me some sore muscle treatment. We really went for it.

I was so grateful I had the opportunity. I really learned a lot and I hope that it shows throughout the season.”

Rob Lowe and his sons Matthew and John Owen head out in search of ghosts, Bigfoot, and other things that go bump in the night in A&E’s new nonfiction series, The Lowe Files. The network’s just unveiled the first trailer for the series and confirmed The Lowe Files will debut on Wednesday, August 2, 2017 at 10pm ET/PT. Season one, which consists of nine episodes, is executive produced by Rob Lowe, Elaine Frontain Bryant, Amy Savitsky, Devon Hammonds, Tom Forman, Jon Beyer, Brad Bishop and Douglas McCallie. The series is an A&E Network and Critical Content production.

The Lowe Files follows Rob Lowe and his sons as they explore the country’s unsolved mysteries. Episode one will feature the Lowes visiting former boys reformatory Preston Castle in Ione, CA. The reformatory was built in the 1800s and is now a California Historical Landmark. Preston Castle closed down in 1960 and is reportedly haunted by angry spirits.

The Plot: In each episode of The Lowe Files, Rob, Matthew and John Owen seek out a mysterious story or spooky legend and immerse themselves in the exploration and debate of the experience. While fun in spirit, the Lowe’s are able to conduct deliberate and scientific investigations on a highly-sophisticated level by meeting with top experts, using high-tech monitoring equipment and taking in-depth training courses. Their many missions, which will take them across the county, include: exploring an alien base located 2,000 feet underwater off the coast of Malibu, CA; working with a renowned shaman at Preston Castle, an abandoned boys’ reformatory; and training with a top-secret government operative in methods of Remote Viewing, a challenge to identify images from great distances. But for Rob, the ultimate goal in this undertaking is to create lasting memories with his two beloved sons who are on the verge of adulthood with their own lives, careers and families ahead of them.

Bacon’s also executive producing the new series inspired by the 1990 film, along with Andrew Miller (The Secret Circle) and David Schiff (Southpaw). Miller’s attached as writer and showrunner.

“This is the only character I’ve played that I’ve ever thought about revisiting. I just got to thinking, where would this guy end up after 25 years?” said Bacon. “Andrew Miller has a fantastic take on it and we hope to create a show that will be fun and scary for fans of the movie and folks that have yet to discover it. Let’s kick some Graboid ass!”

“We are so pleased to continue our partnership with SYFY and UCP in reviving this cult classic with none other than Kevin Bacon as Valentine McKee; we look forward to thrilling original fans and new audiences alike,” stated Blumhouse founder, Jason Blum.

There’s no word yet if any other familiar faces from the world of Tremors will show up in the television series. The original Tremors starring Kevin Bacon was released on January 19, 1990 and made $16.6 million domestically during its theatrical run before going on to become a cult classic on DVD. It spawned a series of straight-to-DVD sequels, none of which starred Kevin Bacon.

The Plot: The killer Graboid worms that nearly destroyed Perfection, Nevada 25 years ago are back, and the town’s only hope for survival is Valentine McKee (Bacon) who beat them once. But to do it again he’ll have to overcome age, alcohol and a delusional hero complex.

True Blood star Ryan Kwanten has signed on to the cast of Crackle’s new dramatic series, The Oath. Sean Bean was previously announced to star in the series created by former Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Deputy Joe Halpin. Halpin is writing, executive producing and serving as the showrunner, with Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson, Todd Hoffman, and Dennis Kim also executive producing.

Jeff T. Thomas (Blindspot) is directing episode one of the 10 episode first season. Crackle’s aiming for a 2018 series debut.

Ryan Kwanten’s credits include Jake and the Never Land Pirates, Blunt Force Trauma, Reach Me, Flight 7500, and Knights of Badassdom.

The Plot: The Oath takes an unforgiving look at the complicated dynamics in these organizations and documents the lives of those willing to risk it all, to have it all. The gritty, action-packed drama, explores a world of gangs made up of those sworn to protect and defend and sheds light on corrupt and secret societies that are nearly impossible to join – only a select few make the cut-but once inside, members will do what they must to protect each other from enemies on the outside and from within their own ranks.

Kwanten will play Steve Hammond, son of Tom Hammond (portrayed by Sean Bean) and the leader of a cop gang, The Ravens. A cool, pragmatic, reluctant leader with the mind and instincts of a shrewd tactician, Hammond is a survivor–a natural protector who values taking care of those closest to him, his family, his team.

‘Better Call Saul’ Earns a Fourth Season Order

Better Call Saul

Of course Better Call Saul is returning for a fourth season. Season three of the award-winning, critically acclaimed dramatic series snagged the #3 spot on the list of the highest-rated cable dramas among adults 24-54, behind only AMC’s The Walking Dead and Fear the Walking Dead. According to the network, Better Call Saul season three averaged 3.6 million viewers and the finale brought in 3.7 million viewers.

The Breaking Bad prequel was created by Peter Gould and Vince Gilligan, with Gould, Gilligan, Mark Johnson, Melissa Bernstein, Thomas Schnauz, and Gennifer Hutchison executive producing. The season three cast included Bob Odenkirk as Jimmy McGill, Jonathan Banks as Mike Ehrmantraut, Michael McKean as Chuck McGill, Rhea Seehorn as Kim Wexler, Patrick Fabian as Howard Hamlin, Michael Mando as Nacho Varga, and Giancarlo Esposito as Gus Fring.

Season four will consist of 10 hour-long episodes and will air in 2018.

“Supporting artists we respect and admire; delivering truly outstanding character development and nuanced dramatic twists and turns; continuing a legacy of bold creative choices; loving writing that is the best in the business: Truly, ‘S’all good, man’” said Charlie Collier, president of AMC, SundanceTV and AMC Studios. “Congratulations to Vince, Peter, Bob and everyone involved with Better Call Saul. Bring on season four!”

A Look Back at Season 3: Season 3 follows the twists and turns of Jimmy McGill’s devolution toward Breaking Bad’s Saul Goodman — Albuquerque’s most notorious criminal lawyer. Six years before he meets Walter White, Jimmy is a more-or-less law-abiding, small-time attorney hustling to champion his underdog clients, build his practice, and somehow make a name for himself.

The acclaimed second season ended with a pair of cliffhangers. Determined to prevent his brother from practicing law, Chuck staged an elaborate con, secretly recording Jimmy’s confession to a felony. When Mike set his sights on sociopathic cartel boss Hector Salamanca, an ominous intervention stopped him from pulling the trigger, raising questions as to what other dangerous players may be in the game.

As the new season begins, the repercussions of Chuck’s scheme test Jimmy and Kim’s fledgling law practices — and their romance — as never before. This imminent existential threat presses Jimmy’s faltering moral compass to the limit. Meanwhile, Mike searches for a mysterious adversary who seems to know almost everything about his business.

As the season progresses, new characters are introduced and backstories are further illuminated with meaningful nods to the Breaking Bad universe.
