Tom Ellis delivers his best performance to date with Fox’s Lucifer season two episode five titled ‘Weaponizer.’ The last 10 minutes are heartbreaking and Ellis proves the show’s title character is more than just a charming womanizer who likes to solve crimes. Airing on October 24, 2016, the episode begins on a well-manicured street in a nice neighborhood. The peace is interrupted by a mom yelling at her son for leaving his skateboard out where she would trip on it, not knowing an angel actually put the skateboard in her path. Their dog escapes, a car swerves to avoid it and crashes into Chloe as Lucifer’s brother Uriel looks on.
Chloe’s banged up but basically fine, telling Lucifer it was just a random car crash but he’s not buying it. He thinks his dad is trying to send him a message. Plus, he doesn’t think Chloe (Lauren German) and Maze (Lesley Ann Brandt) mix…they probably aren’t the best roommate match. He wanders through Chloe’s apartment picking up Maze’s random sex toys, dropping one quickly when Trixie appears. Chloe thinks it will be fine once they’ve adjusted to the arrangement.
Trixie (Scarlett Estevez) demands her mom read her a book immediately because she’s worried about how dangerous her mom’s job is. Trixie’s not positive her mom will always return home after she leaves for work, and Chloe promises she won’t get hurt as Lucifer makes jokes about birth control.
Chloe and Lucifer catch up with Ella (Aimee Garcia) at a murder scene where Lucifer immediately recognizes the victim as Wesley Cabot, an actor in B movies and an 8th-degree black belt. Lucifer loves his movies and knows a lot about Wesley. Wesley had a huge drug habit, and Lucifer’s fine with that, but it meant studios wouldn’t hire him anymore. He was teaching karate when he died and Ella has determined the time of death was around 7am. He was hit with a nunchuck statue award and that’s what caused his death.
Lucifer gets down on the floor and tries to take a selfie with the dead body when Chloe wisely takes his phone away. Then Lucifer gets the idea one of Wesley’s opponents in a movie did him in. He promises to avenge Wesley’s death.
After Chloe walks away to question a kid, Ella starts to ask Lucifer a question when he immediately jumps to the conclusion that she wants to have sex with him. Because, you know, he’s Lucifer and irresistible. He even suggests a nearby bed but Ella actually wanted to know why he loves Wesley Cabot. When Lucifer explains, Ella thinks it makes sense since he’s a method actor. Lucifer swears once again he’s not, but Ella’s not buying it. As she talks, Lucifer’s distracted by a man walking by.
Lucifer heads up to a nearby rooftop where he chats with Uriel, his brother (Michael Imperioli). Uriel says he has 24 hours to either return with mom or he’ll kill Chloe. Lucifer, for once, is speechless.
Back at his place, Lucifer tells Amenadiel (DB Woodside) and Maze about Uriel. Maze suggests he pay up and give up mom. Amenadiel reminds them all that angels can’t hurt people, and Lucifer says Uriel can cause an accident that seems random. Maze continues on with the solution of sending mom back to Hell. Lucifer, however, thinks they have a nuclear weapon: Amenadiel. Uriel doesn’t know Amenadiel and Lucifer are working together so he can be the one who deals with Uriel.
Lucifer happily tells Chloe she’s being attacked by celestial forces. She needs to do the opposite of what she’d normally do, so she jokes she was going to have sex with him. Lucifer loves that until he figures out he told her to do the opposite. No matter what, Lucifer says he won’t be leaving her side for at least a day. He’ll be her “guardian devil.” Dan (Kevin Alejandro) interrupts Lucifer and Chloe and it appears he’s just as big a Wesley Cabot fan as Lucifer, with both men quoting one of the actor’s catchphrases at the same time. Lucifer decides he needs a catchphrase but Chloe says no. Lucifer and Dan are actually doing a bit of bonding over this whole ‘Wesley Cabot films’ thing.
Wesley’s ex-wife Jamie (Charisma Carpenter) is called in for questioning and Lucifer snarls, “Welcome to Devil time.” It’s his new catchphrase but no one gets it. The ex says she got a mysterious phone call from Wesley and when she went to visit him, he was already dead. She also says she still cared about him. And, she has an alibi. Her current husband is Kimo Van Zandt (Mark Dacascos), Wesley’s ex-co-star in action films.
Body Bags 4 seems to be at the heart of the killing and Lucifer and Dan do some more bonding by acting out of scenes. Kimo, the co-star who’s now married to Jamie, is now a prime suspect.
And now we get to check in with Charlotte (Tricia Helfer) who is failing at the mom thing and at work. Amenadiel shows up and he wonders if she’s just postponing the inevitable. He asks what happens if more of her children come down and try to bring her back to Hell, and she says she’s happy to be spending time with he and Lucifer for as long as she can.
Chloe and Lucifer are on a stake-out and she tries to eat a sandwich, but Lucifer throws it in the backseat. Chloe doesn’t understand why Lucifer’s so obsessed with her well-being and just then Kimo (aka The Weaponizer) attacks some guy in the parking lot. They haul Kimo into the station and although Lucifer is hoping for some Hollywood-type reason for the attack, Kimo says it’s because the man had gambling debts and he’s working for the mob to pay bills. Lucifer uses his powers to find out what Kimo really wants, and he confesses he’s working so that his wife can be happy. He also claims he and Wesley were great friends and hid their friendship from Jamie so it wouldn’t get weird. Kimo was signing stuff at a comic book store during the murder, but the murder weapon turns out to have his prints on it. He’s placed under arrest.
Lucifer doesn’t think Kimo did it because he’s not a killer. Chloe, however, does believe it but then sees the Weaponizer is already out of jail which is weird since he claimed to be broke. Awww, Lucifer turns out to be Kimo’s benefactor, declaring the Weaponizer will not spend one night in jail if he can help it. Ryan Goldburg (Kimo’s business manager) thanks Lucifer for making Kimo’s bail because Kimo spent all of his money on a high-priced lifestyle. Dan is also caught up in the whole Kimo/Wesley thing and takes a selfie with a photo of Kimo, while Lucifer notices Amenadiel is hanging out in the station.
Amenadiel believes Uriel is setting a trap, but Lucifer thinks there’s something wrong with Amenadiel. Lucifer doesn’t realize Amenadiel – the all-powerful first-born son – has lost his powers. Lucifer said Uriel was always afraid of Amenadiel, and just the sight of him will send shivers down his spine.
Amenadiel meets Uriel up on a rooftop and says it’s good to see him. He tells Uriel he has to go home, but Uriel doesn’t believe Amenadiel has everything under control. Amenadiel says he doesn’t need Uriel’s help…definitely not help offered by just a mid-level son. “I am Amenadiel, the fury and righteousness of our Father, and you little brother are standing in my way!” says Amenadiel, invading Uriel’s space to get him to back down. Uriel apologizes and says he’ll return home but then he turns and punches Amenadiel, dropping him to the ground. Uriel suspected something was wrong because Amenadiel is more of a man of action than a talker usually. He thinks he can beat this Amenadiel and kicks him while he’s down. “The bigger they are…” says Uriel, spreading his gorgeous wings before beating up his big brother.
Dan says Kimo’s alibi checked out, but he collected toys from the comic book store because the Body Bags items are selling like hotcakes. Wesley and Kimo were being cheated out of royalties by their manager, collecting 1% of sales instead of 10%. Chloe needs to head out to call on Ryan the manager and Lucifer has to go attend to family business, so Dan’s left talking to Ella. Ella mentions Wesley was killed by his own weird award and Dan then remembers there were two awards given out that year. The awards must have been switched and that’s why Kimo’s fingerprints were on the murder weapon. Jamie had access to both and could have given the award to Ryan to set up Kimo.
At Lucifer’s place Maze is trying to work on Amenadiel’s badly beaten face. He looks horribly beaten and finally admits to his brother that he doesn’t have his powers anymore. They could be gone for any number of reasons including the fact he slept with a demon and is working with Lucifer. Amenadiel wonders if he’s simply no longer worthy. He says he needs to face the truth that he’s fallen, and Lucifer welcomes him to the club. Lucifer tells him losing his powers could be the best thing that happened to him. That said, Lucifer needs to find Uriel because time’s up and Chloe is now in grave danger.
Uriel sets off a little chain reaction that ultimately ends with Kimo spotting his wife kissing his business manager. Immediately afterward, Chloe arrives at the same hotel. Uriel watches as she enters, a small smile gracing his face.
Charlotte is yelling at her young son who won’t stop barking at her as Maze walks up. She’s chained the kid to the goal for a time out and he doesn’t stop barking until Maze growls back at him. But Maze isn’t there for childcare purposes; she tells Charlotte they need to talk.
Jamie and Ryan are having a nice lunch with a glass of wine when Chloe interrupts what they claim is a business meeting. Chloe accuses Ryan of stealing from his clients and Jamie of setting the whole thing up. They both start pointing the finger at each other, blaming each other for killing Wesley. Kimo arrives with a shotgun ready to take out his cheating wife and business manager. Chloe blocks his shot and Lucifer, plus two officers, arrive as Kimo is ready to shoot someone. Chloe talks Kimo out of shooting anyone, admitting she’s terrified after the accident and just wants to go home and read a bedtime story to Trixie. She begs him to make the right choice and put down the gun which he does. Lucifer congratulates Chloe on talking Kimo out of shooting anyone. She also says she doesn’t believe in fate or bad luck, and she’ll be leaving the premises alone. He warns her she needs to buckle up and then he’s off to deal with his brother.
Back at Lucifer’s, Charlotte tells her son she’s decided she’s letting Uriel take her back to Hell. Maze arrives to second the motion, saying she doesn’t want to clean up Lucifer’s mess and this will mean Chloe is safe from dad. Lucifer says he’s keeping his word by making mom serve out her sentence on earth, and Maze argues that’s not what God wants. Lucifer finally loses control, yelling that everyone thinks they know what God wants but they don’t. He said dad showed him an open door, but that could have meant any number of things. “Nobody bloody well knows because the selfish bastard won’t just tell us! I’m sick of it!” says Lucifer, pounding his fist on the table. Mom’s proud of her son and says Uriel was small as a child and only wanted to play with the older kids, including Lucifer. “Uriel is a stubborn boy and when he sets his mind, he doesn’t waver,” says Charlotte. Lucifer thinks there has to be another way, and Charlotte has faith that her son will find it.
Lucifer is praying in a church and Uriel asks if he’s done hiding behind Amenadiel’s skirt. Uriel says in his version of how this plays out, Lucifer’s friend will die. Lucifer tries to tell Uriel he doesn’t know what dad wants, but Uriel says he knows what dad needs. It’s only a matter of time before mom finds her way back to heaven where dad will forgive her. Lucifer doesn’t see that happening, but Uriel believes it will. God will let his guard down and mom will destroy him.
Uriel pulls out Azrael’s blade, saying he borrowed it from the Angel of Death when she wasn’t looking. Uriel is determined to keep mom from destroying heaven and was going to use the blade on her. Lucifer says he’s going insane, but Uriel doesn’t care about anything other than getting rid of mom. If he hits a key on the piano it will set off a series of events that will mean in two days Chloe will die. It’s Lucifer’s choice – turn over mom or kill Chloe – and Lucifer chooses to slug Uriel. Lucifer’s easily beating Uriel in hand-to-hand combat but then Uriel starts getting the upper hand. They’re trashing the church and Uriel knocks Lucifer down and almost out, but says he won’t use the blade on him. He will however be fine with using it on Maze who he calls a scum-sucking demon. They fight and Maze knocks the blade out of Uriel’s hand. But, he figures out her pattern of attack and also bests her. Uriel is ready to play a key on the piano in order to kill Chloe. He also promises to kill their mom but doesn’t count on Lucifer getting up and running him through with Azrael’s blade. Uriel dies and Lucifer is distraught, gazing up to the heavens.
Chloe is in bed with Trixie reading a bedtime story and looking adorable.
Charlotte waited patiently at Lucifer’s for any news and Lucifer wanders in bloody and heartbroken. He’s been crying and Charlotte realizes he killed Uriel. She hugs him and they both cry.
The sixth episode of Fox’s Gotham season three travels further down the rabbit hole as Jervis Tetch/Mad Hatter (Benedict Samuel) continues to seek revenge for the death of his beloved sister, Alice. Episode six titled ‘Follow the White Rabbit’ opens with a bride and groom entering a limo outside the church where they were wed, unaware Tetch is their driver. He tells them they won’t be able to attend their reception because they’re due elsewhere, and the bride asks that he not hurt them. It’s apparently up to James Gordon to determine their fate. In the front seat of the limo, Tetch spins the propeller on a kid’s beanie cap and reminds the child to buckle up.
At Penguin’s place, he’s thrilled about the beautiful new day. Penguin (Robin Lord Taylor) has found someone special, but thinks the love is one-sided. He needs to confess his feelings to Edward Nygma.
Valerie Vale (Jamie Chung) is questioning Jim over breakfast at a diner, asking if he can set up a meeting with Lee about Alice’s blood. Jim’s pretty non-committal and when Valerie leaves, an albino stranger approaches Jim (Ben McKenzie) with a message from Tetch. Jim’s led to a payphone and Tetch tells him he’s been studying him. Tetch promises to drive him mad as he forces Jim to confront his past. The newlyweds stand on the ledge of a bridge high above where Jim is on the phone with Tetch. Jim has to choose whether to save the couple or the boy with the propeller cap who is about to be hit by a semi-truck. Jim chooses to save the little boy and snatches him out of the way of the truck while watching the newlyweds leap to their deaths.
Jim runs back to the phone and Tetch gives him an address where he must go alone or else more people will die.
Lee (Morena Baccarin) shows Mario their announcement in the newspaper and Mario says his dad wants to throw them a party. He didn’t think Lee would want an engagement party but she’s unexpectedly happy about the idea.
Nygma (Cory Michael Smith) is busy at his desk, asking one of his underlings to deliver what looks like a bomb to Mickey the Nail’s place. Mayor Cobblepot arrives and receives two schedules from Edward: one as the Mayor, the other as leader of Gotham’s underworld. Edward confesses he still hasn’t found Butch, and Penguin has his own confession. He pauses and finally says he forgot what he was going to say. So much for telling Ed how he feels about him.
Harvey (Donal Logue) and Captain Barnes (Michael Chiklis) are among the investigators on the dead wedding couple’s case. Harvey says a little kid just told him Jim Gordon saved his life and Barnes wants Jim brought in for questioning. Just then Harvey spots the albino stranger across the street and they try to question him. He just keeps repeating, “James Gordon, I have a message for you.” They realize Tetch has hypnotized the man.
Jim makes it to the meeting place and finds a bulletin board with details on his life and his father’s death. The phone rings and Tetch tells Jim to look through the telescope so they can chat face-to-face. Jim thinks Tetch blames him for Alice’s death and that Tetch wants revenge. Jim keeps pissing off Tetch by hanging up on him and finally Tetch says if he does it again, “she” dies. Who is she? Why it’s Valerie Vale who Tetch has taken hostage.
Jim meets with Barbara (Erin Richards) at her club to try and get info on where Tetch lives. When she won’t answer, Jim starts breaking things. He knows Barbara has talked to Tetch because Tetch knew things only Barbara could have told him. Barbara continues to claim she doesn’t know where he is but does admit she spilled the beans on Jim when Tetch came in days ago and asked all sorts of personal questions about her former lover. Jim wants to know if she told Tetch about Lee and she says, “Of course.” Jim leaves, immediately calling Lee but it’s Tetch who answers her phone. Jim has 10 minutes to make it to Gotham Water and Power or else.
Tetch has both Valerie Vale and Lee Thompkins tied up in the back of van, calling them two halves of Jim Gordon’s heart.
Captain Barnes continues to try to interrogate the albino stranger, getting increasingly upset as he doesn’t answer. Barnes grabs a chair so hard he leaves finger marks etched in the metal. Harvey interrupts the interrogation to say Jim was spotted pulling up to Gotham Water and Power.
Inside the Gotham Water and Power building, televisions are set up with Tetch on screen. Above him, Tetch has a pediatrician and a journalist tied up, symbolizing Lee and Valerie. Jim has to choose which one dies but he refuses, with Tetch yelling that he has to pick up the gun and fire or else. Jim says he’s done playing Tetch’s game just as Captain Barnes, Harvey, and the officers rush in. Tetch throws a switch and both people are zapped. Jim tells Tetch he will find him, and Tetch replies, “Just ask an old friend how to get to the end.”
Mayor Cobblepot and Ed visit the elementary school and Cobblepot’s not at all happy about being around kids. The Mayor spots one boy sitting alone and introduces himself, asking why he’s not playing with the other children. He gives the kid questionable advice, telling him if the other kids don’t like him, push them down the stairs. Ed’s impressed with his boss and Penguin once again tells him he needs to discuss something. They set a date that night for dinner at the mansion.
Jim explains to Captain Barnes that Tetch is trying to drive him insane by kidnapping Lee and Valerie, and he’s angry at himself for not doing anything to save the two innocent people Tetch just fried. Captain Barnes doesn’t blame Jim and says it’s all on Tetch. Jim knows now that Tetch is going to make him choose between Lee and Valerie, and Captain Barnes promises they will find them.
Lee and Valerie are being held hostage in Lee’s house, chained but loosely enough so that Lee can look through the medicine cabinet. Valerie tries to get info out of Lee on Alice’s blood but Lee’s having none of it.
Captain Barnes touches base with Lee’s boyfriend, Mario, who says he hasn’t heard from Lee since this morning. Barnes rallies the troops, telling the Gotham City Police that they need to find Tetch now. Jim spots the albino stranger in a cell and figures out he might be part of the answer. Jim asks how he gets to the end and the stranger makes a writing motion. Jim hands him a pad and he writes “the true test will be revealed.” It also says the tea party begins once more when you walk through Lee Thompkins’ door.
Mario grabs Jim as he’s trying to leave but Jim won’t tell him what’s going on. Instead, Jim says he has to trust him. Jim can’t go in with all the cops but he thinks Mario might be able to help him after all.
Valerie and Lee are doing a little weird bonding while they try to break out of their chains. Valerie wants to know why Lee returned to Gotham, as Lee works herself free from her chains. Valerie broke the tool Lee used and is stuck but tells Lee to go without her. Just then Tetch appears in the bathroom and says the guest of honor will be there shortly.
Jim walks up to Lee’s door, enters her house, and a record is playing. He heads to the dining room and sees Tetch, Lee, and Valerie seated around a dinner table. Jim’s told to have a seat while Tetch’s two associates are armed and ready to shoot if necessary. Jim turns over his gun and sits opposite Tetch. Tetch begins telling the story of a brother and a sister but warns it has a sad ending. He says Jim poisoned his sister against him, and now the woman Jim loves is going to die.
Meanwhile, Mario is sneaking around with a gun.
Tetch discusses Lee and what she got out of being with Jim. Valerie Vale’s up next, and Tetch says Valerie still has hope for Jim. Now it’s up to Jim to choose which one has his heart. Jim asks that Tetch’s men lower their weapons because they could shoot him accidentally and Tetch agrees. After they do, Jim tells Tetch to lower his. Mario’s made it to the room and has his gun pointed at Tetch. Tetch says the problem with this plan is the gun Mario grabbed from downstairs is empty.
Mario is escorted to the bathroom to be locked up. Tetch then demands Jim say who it is he loves. Jim talks about love, but turns it around and makes it about Tetch and Alice’s relationship. Jim lets Tetch know Alice told him what he did to her as a child and it was disgusting. Tetch becomes more and more upset as Jim continues to speak, and Jim says Alice killed herself rather than being with Tetch. Jim says her face was peaceful when she died because she was away from her brother. Tetch puts the gun to Jim’s forehead and Jim grabs his arm, forcing the gun to stay on his head. He wants Tetch to let the women go and shoot him instead. Tetch almost falls for it but doesn’t. He wants Jim to live on and choose one of the women. Jim says he won’t choose and Tetch assures him he will. On the count of three, Jim has to say which one Tetch should kill or else he’ll just shoot both of them. One, two, three … and Jim says to kill Lee. Tetch is happy the truth has come out but instead of shooting Lee, he shoots Valerie. Tetch says Jim’s always known he’s a villain. Tetch and his men leave as Lee tries to help Valerie.
Valerie makes it to the emergency room where Mario takes over trying to save her.
At Mayor Cobblepot’s the dining room table is set for a romantic dinner. Penguin practices his speech to an empty place setting, telling the absent Ed that he loves him. The real Ed is selecting a bottle of wine for dinner when a woman who looks exactly like Kris Kringle begins talking to him about wine. That throws Ed for a loop and when she says a riddle, it appears Ed has fallen in love at first sight.
Harvey asks Jim how Valerie’s doing and he wants to know why Jim didn’t come to him for help. Harvey’s not upset because Jim did what he thought was right, and Jim realizes he actually did exactly what Tetch wanted.
Jim tries to talk to Lee about telling Tetch to kill her, but Lee doesn’t want to hear about it just now.
Derek Klena and Aunjanue Ellis in ‘Quantico’ season 2 (Photo by Giovanni Rufino / ABC)
Three episodes down and we’re getting thicker into the plot of this season’s Quantico. It’s taking some time to get to the substance of what’s going to happen, but episode four of season two felt a lot more cohesive than episodes past, which is definitely a good thing!
The core of the plot is centered around the hostage situation and how the trade ensues. In this episode, Raina (Yasmine Al Massri) emerges as an instrumental character in the show. Of course, when one becomes important in this show, there could be consequences.
Early in the episode, Raina was kidnapped in a room and her collar was slightly tightened. She becomes the spokesperson for Citizen’s Liberation Front (CLF) where she says the CLF will trade 1,667 hostages for the delivery of Eric Boyer. We come to learn Eric Boyer recently received a presidential pardon despite his hacking activities.
Back on the Farm, there’s speculation that Owen could be recruiting people for AIC. Now that a bug has been discovered, Miranda (Aunjanue Ellis) is slightly hesitant to continue the mission considering she learned that an agent by the name of Sylvia Ehrlich recently committed “suicide.” (Notice the air quotes.) It wasn’t truly a suicide; it was a “professional” suicide. Per Miranda’s order, she tells Alex (Priyanka Chopra) and Ryan (Jake McLaughlin) to lay low. Even though they were told to lay low, Ryan and Alex cook up their own little scheme of participating in the training exercise while working around Miranda’s orders.
Before the next training class starts, Ryan receives a package from the Department of Justice that he signs for. When he opens it, it’s a letter from the DOJ indicating that Liam left him a post office key per his last will and testament.
Onto the training classes and the murderboard is rolled out. We see Alex is at the bottom of the murderboard – two times. That means she is supposed to be cut. She gets a little confused and is visibly annoyed that after demonstrating improvement and moving up a couple of spots, she’s once again at the bottom.
This week’s exercise is all about how each individual regulates their emotions, how they regulate their stress levels, and what their physiological reactions are to stress. Everyone is given wristbands AKA a ‘stress-o-meter’ which they are to wear during the course of the exercise. As the recruits are in stressful situations, their meters will go from green to yellow to red. Owen is going to use that data to determine vulnerabilities and turn those into strengths.
Flash forward to present day and we see Raina in the dark boiler room where she is held by the terrorists. Little does she knows that Alex is in undercover and with her in the same room. Alex gets the two terrorists to leave the room to get some alone time with Raina. Alex brings Raina on board to help and ensure the terrorists hold onto the hostages as long as possible, because they are under duress and finding it difficult to manage. Therefore, Alex tells Raina that she needs her help to ensure the hostages stay in Federal Hall to keep exploiting the terrorists’ stress point (see the tie-in to the training exercise lesson). The longer the hostages are held, the more likely the Citizen’s Liberation Front will crumble.
Alex encourages Raina to involve herself in the trade and have her speak for the terrorist group, so that way they don’t get voice printed.
We see a couple messages that Harry (Russell Tovey) and Velez (Aaron Diaz) receive that tie into their vulnerabilities. Harry gets a message that needs to get to the infirmary for testing. Harry’s response – he thought it was an STD. Velez gets a message from Owen indicating someone who was previously after Velez has escaped from prison.
Fast forward again to the present day and we see Miranda begin to act on the terrorist’s request and gets Boyer to make the trade for the hostages. Of course when Boyer resists Miranda’s request to come for the trade, she pushes him to the street and handcuffs him for jaywalking. She takes Boyer into the car and you see her devilish side. She tells him he has to hold up his end of the bargain, which he didn’t do. Boyer asks, “Are you one of them?” Her response is that she’s a representative of sorts. He sort of agrees to go be a part of the trade, but he comes to realize that he will essentially die within a couple of hours. They exit they car and Miranda leaves him with Shelby to babysit him for a few moments. Boyer apologizes to Shelby and says he’s sorry for hacking into McGregor Wyatt. He told Shelby that he didn’t read any of her personal messages, but if he’s alive, she might want to.
Back to the Farm where we see the training exercise in progress. The recruits are at this fancy soiree of sorts to see how they react to stressful situations. We see Alex has some fancy device in her purse that she’s using to try and detect what cell phone tower Owen’s phone bounces off of. Once she knows this, she can pick up some data off Owen’s phone. Even though Alex and Ryan were instructed to lay low this week, this is their way of testing their suspicions about Owen and if he is using the Farm to recruit agents for AIC.
In the present day, the hostage release begins and for every 10 hostages released, Boyer is permitted to take one step forward. As the hostage situation progresses, and Raina and Miranda come face to face. Raina tries to use a code word and instance related to the boiler room to indicate that Alex is alive and is in the building. Miranda either ignores Raina’s prompt or truly doesn’t get it, but the plan to diffuse the whole situation doesn’t work. Alex sees that from the building and starts shooting to create a diversion. As Alex’s efforts continue to fail, Boyer is eventually turned over to the terrorists.
In this episode, more backstory on Owen’s (Blair Underwood) career trajectory surfaces. It seems he was put on the Farm because a journalist outed his identity and as a result he can’t be out in the field.
Alex accomplishes the side mission and figures out what cell phone tower Owen’s phone is beaming off of. As she accomplishes this task, of course, it doesn’t come without a revelation. Owen exposes Alex’s strength – her willingness to go out there and save people at no cost – and her greatest weakness – SELF-DOUBT. She learns the murderboard was manipulated to make Alex feel inadequate on purpose. People within the Farm were in on it as well.
Ryan eventually goes to the post office to see what Liam left him and opens the box and finds a CIA hat with a note that reads, “Hope it fits!” After a heated and feisty interaction with Lydia, Ryan learns that his weakness isn’t his traumatic experience with Liam or authority issues, but it’s Alex. In a later scene, Ryan confronts Alex with this revelation and indicates that he needs a little bit of a break from her in order for him to succeed in this training.
At the end of the episode, we learn everyone’s weakness. Sebastian’s (David Lim) is his mental health (he tried to commute suicide before) and his struggle with his sexuality. Harry empathizes with this situation by sharing his story about his sexuality and saying Sebastian would feel better if he came out. It appears Sebastian’s struggle with his sexuality stems from his religious practice and conservative background. You see some genuine emotion out of Sebastian where he tries to absorb and heed Harry’s words and attempts to gain a greater sense of self-acceptance.
Two eureka-type moments happened at the end of the episode. After going through Owen’s phone, we learn our high-strung party planner, Lee, might be a potential recruit for AIC. The second moment involves Shelby listening to the words that Boyer said while they were standing outside waiting for Miranda. She logs in to McGregor Wyatt and sees an email from Boyer. The email from Boyer says, “She’s one of them.”
In the final scenes of the episode, Boyer kills himself because the terrorists went too far. Boyer doesn’t want to do any more of their dirty work, so he takes his own life.
