Spike TV and Weinstein Television have made a deal for the dramatic series, Waco, starring Taylor Kitsch (Lone Survivor) and Michael Shannon (Boardwalk Empire). The six-part series is based on the books A Place Called Waco by Branch Davidian David Thibodeau (a survivor of the April 1993 fire) and Stalling for Time: My Life as an FBI Hostage Negotiator by the FBI’s Special Agent in Charge of Negotiations Gary Noesner. Kitsch will star as Branch Davidians cult leader David Koresh, and Shannon will play Noesner in the series which will begin production in the spring of 2017.
John Erick Dowdle and Drew Dowdle (No Escape) are writing the six-part series, with John Erick Dowdle directing. The Dowdle brothers, Shannon, Kitsch, Harvey Weinstein, Bob Weinstein, David Glasser, Jennifer Malloy, and Megan Spanjian are executive producing.
“We’ve been working with our friend Kevin Kay at Spike for years. He has a rare gift for creating quality scripted television with commercial appeal and when he shared his vision for both the program and his goals for the network, I knew we had found the perfect partner,” stated Harvey Weinstein, TWC co-chairman. “Waco is a provocative series where the drama and excitement are amplified by the truth and the history surrounding the event, along with a cast of amazing actors including the incredible Michael Shannon and Taylor Kitsch. We are looking forward to working with Sharon Levy and her team to bring this story to life.”
“We couldn’t think of a better home to bring Waco to audiences than Spike TV,” added David Glasser, TWC President and COO. “They are great collaborators dedicated to groundbreaking content, and we are excited to share the riveting stories behind this harrowing event. We look forward to many more partnerships with them in the future.”
“With so many voices in television right now, it’s vital that we’ve found a team truly passionate about the material,” said TWC’s Megan Spanjian and Jennifer Malloy. “From the Dowdles, who spent more than 3 years researching the true story and were able to bring Shannon and Kitsch into the fold. It’s a joy to be working with Spike on another series and we could not be more excited.”
The Plot:Waco will forever change the way the dramatic siege will be viewed. The landmark series will be the definitive untold story exploring the true life details leading up to and chronicling the 51- day siege between the FBI, AFT and David Koresh’s spiritual sect, The Branch Davidians. Told from several perspectives of those most intimately involved from both sides of the conflict, including surviving Branch Davidians which has never been shared on television before, is surprising in its stark contrast to the media narrative at the time and what is remembered of Waco almost 25 years later.
Lady Gaga took the passenger seat while James Corden drove through the streets for a lengthy Carpool Karaoke video. The Late Late Show’s most popular video series found the twosome getting into “Perfect Illusion,” “Bad Romance,” “The Edge of Glory,” “Born This Way,” O-Town’s “Liquid Dreams,” “Poker Face,” and “Million Reasons” while Corden dressed in a few of Lady Gaga’s more memorable outfits.
Corden asked Lady Gaga to describe what it was like to be offered the Super Bowl halftime show and then Lady Gaga participated in a Carpool Karaoke first: the newly licensed driver took over Corden’s job behind the wheel. Lady Gaga admitted her father cried when she passed the driving test at age 30, and she’s even driven around New York. She also confirmed she bought about 400 pieces of Michael Jackson’s clothing, including a “Thriller” jacket and a glove, and she keeps them in a temperature-controlled room to preserve them. Other little tidbits from the video include Lady Gaga saying she can in fact write a song in 10 minutes and she hates when fashion fails her.
“There’s no one who can stop us now,” says Sam Scudder aka Mirror Master (Grey Damon). “There is one person,” replies Rosa (Ashley Rickards). “Who?” asks Scudder. “The Flash,” answers the criminal’s girlfriend who’s teaming up with him once again to be the king and queen of crime in Central City in The CW’s comic-book inspired fantasy, action series, The Flash.
As the episode begins, Joe (Jesse L. Martin) is at S.T.A.R. Labs showing Team Flash the same footage he showed Barry (Grant Gustin) and Julian (Tom Felton) of the Rival being thrown around in his cell. Joe says he’ll call in a favor and see if he can find out anything on this new metahuman named Alchemy. Jesse (Violett Beane) asks Cisco (Carlos Valdes) and Barry if she can train with them, anxious to learn more about what she can do with her powers. The training goes well but Jesse makes a few mistakes, which is exactly what Barry wanted knowing that she’ll only learn and become a tough and determined superhero from her mistakes – just like Barry did. Barry gives Jesse advice on how to survey her surroundings and to never just race in without that knowledge.
The episode flashes back to the night the particle accelerator exploded. It seems a well-dressed thief named Scudder has spent some of his ill-gotten gains on his girl, Rosa, which ticks off Snart (Wentworth Miller). Snart’s running the operation and he told them to lay low and not draw attention to themselves. Of course, a fight breaks out and just as Snart is about to finish Scudder the particle accelerator explodes. Snart and his loyal goons take off leaving Scudder and Rosa to be exposed to the dark matter wave. Scudder, unbeknownst to anyone, gets stuck in a mirror. Leap forward to present day and Scudder is accidentally set free by a construction crew. He has revenge on his mind and goes to pay a visit to one of Snart’s loyal goons only to discover he doesn’t know where Snart is. Scudder kills him by using his new powers of traveling through mirrors.
Meanwhile, Barry and Iris (Candace Patton) are trying to get closer and their quiet night at home actually starts to get romantic until Joe comes home early and ruins the mood. Iris gets annoyed with both men but especially with Barry who feels it’s awkward to be caught kissing her in front of her dad. She makes him promise to talk to Joe about it so it won’t be awkward for all of them.
Jesse goes speeding off with Wally (Keiynan Lonsdale) to have some “hang time,” and feeling happy and affectionate she starts to kiss him. At first, Wally kisses back, but then he pulls away. “Oh, I’m sorry. Did I misread this?” asks the wide-eyed young speedster. Wally tells her no but she’s going to be going back to her Earth in a few days and he doesn’t think it’s a good idea. A disappointed Jesse says she understands and asks if they can still be friends, which Wally agrees to.
Back at S.T.A.R. Labs, Harry (Tom Cavanagh) works with Cisco and Caitlin (Danielle Panabaker) on a device that will allow Cisco to use his Vibe powers to send a coded message to other Earths in search of another Harrison Wells. They need a new Harry to fill the void when Earth-2’s Harry returns to his home planet with Jesse. (Does anybody else think this is a bad idea?!) It’s not long before they get a few Wells responding including a British one, a Cowboy, and a French mime. Harry says, “You can’t trust a mime,” and Cisco replies, “Agreed.” They pass on three Wells but Caitlin and Cisco are impressed by the last Wells, a hipster from Earth-19 who seems to be the best candidate. But something in Harry’s gut says no and he tells his two friends to keep searching.
Scudder breaks Rosa out of prison at the same time that Joe has just finished asking her questions about the death of Snart’s loyal goon. Mirror Master and Rosa begin their crime wave by robbing a bank, but Jesse and the Flash show up to stop them. After a few quick quips back and forth, Scudder uses the mirrors to race out but Barry follows telling Jesse to stay put. He’s serious, but does she listen? No, of course not. The two speedsters chase the new metahumans to the roof of a tall building. Jesse stops, seeing Rosa just standing there, while Barry keeps after Scudder. Jesse nicknames Rosa “Top” because of the dress she’s wearing and Top uses her new abilities to cause Jesse to suffer from vertigo. She loses her balance and falls off the roof. The Flash hears her screaming and races over, saving her from crashing to the ground. He tells her she’s going to be okay and that’s when he gets shoved into a mirror by the Mirror Master who turns to Jesse and says, “Have fun trying to get him out”.
Back at S.T.A.R. Labs, Jesse feels terribly guilty knowing it’s partly her fault Barry is stuck in the mirror. Wally both consoles her and gives her a much-needed pep talk along with a kiss as he tells her he’s not afraid of having a relationship with her anymore. Cisco connects a little do-dad to the mirror and the group can hear Barry telling them to get him out. Harry and Cisco realize they need to freeze the mirror and must go way below zero to do it. They head off to create a device that will do just that. This is when Iris decides to talk to Barry about their relationship. (Seriously, why does she always want to talk about her feelings for Barry when he’s either in trouble or grieving?) Barry tells her that he did talk to Joe about being affectionate in front of him and that it might take a little longer to get used to.
Team Flash is back with their new device and they use it, but it doesn’t freeze the mirror cold enough for Barry to phase through. That’s when the metahuman alarm goes off and everyone tells Barry to hang tight as they all go check on the alarm. Caitlin, who hung back from the group, walks over to the side of the mirror where Barry can’t see her and she uses her Killer Frost powers on the mirror, making it cold enough for him to phase through. When Barry joins Team Flash in the other room, they ask how he got out and he says for them to figure that out later. He’s figured out a way to stop Mirror Master.
Using some very cool new devices, Barry creates a hologram of Snart and mimics his voice to set a trap for Scudder. When Mirror Master and Top show up at an old rundown carnival, Jesse uses her powers to take down Top while Barry traps Scudder by using a never-ending-reflection loop.
Harry and Jesse get ready to go back to Earth-2 and the gang has decided to bring Wells from Earth-19 to our Earth. They’ve also decided to call this Harry “H.R.” because that’s what he tells Team Flash to call him. Cisco and Harry hug and Cisco tells Earth-2 Harry not to worry because he’ll always be their “Harry.” Harry tells Cisco their cold device didn’t work because it wasn’t strong enough to break out Barry so that means someone else did. “Who?” asks Cisco. “You tell me,” answers Harry as he gives a quick look in Caitlin’s direction. As he’s about to leave with Jesse, Harry starts to tell the team not to…oops, he and Jesse are gone. H.R.’s laughing about it and more than ready to eat a big belly burger.
Back at Joe’s house, Barry has decided to move out and get an apartment all his own. Both Joe and Iris like the idea since that means Barry and Iris will have a place to be intimate without being right in front of Joe.
The last scene take place in Caitlin’s apartment. She comes home and while in the shower enjoying the hot water and trying to relax, the water freezes solid when she turns and lets it hit her face. She looks up shocked and scared. When she steps out in her robe and looks in the mirror she sees her lips are turning blue and there’s a white streak in her hair. Looking shocked and extremely upset, Caitlin grabs scissors and cuts of the white streak of hair.
The Flash Season 3 Episode 4 Review:
“The New Rogues” episode of the fantasy action series continues the show in the style and spirit of the first season with humor, relationship issues, entertaining villains, impressive action scenes, and a heartbreaking ending. Almost every main character had a major part to play in the episode, and the growth of Barry is continuing with him stepping up and mentoring Jesse so she won’t make the same mistakes as he did when he first became a speedster. Violett Beane is terrific in this episode, showing how she is very much like Barry wanting to learn and master her powers to help and save people on her Earth. Beane and Grant have solid chemistry together, capturing an older brother and kid sister vibe.
There are two stand-out performances in this episode, the first being Tom Cavanagh. Cavanagh gets to have some fun and inject more humor than ever before as he plays the different versions of Wells from various Earths and as a disapproving Harry wanting to reject them all. It’s truly the funniest scene this season.
The second stand-out performance is delivered by Danielle Panabaker as Caitlin Snow. She secretly uses her icy powers to free Barry from the mirror when there’s no other option and yet she’s still desperate for her friends not to know about her powers. The two final scenes with Panabaker as Snow are powerful and intense without her even saying a word. The look of shock and fear in her eyes as she sees her shower ice up and the water freeze, continuing as she watches her lips turn blue and the white streak added to her hair as she desperately cuts it off, speaks volumes. Panabaker conveys so much of Caitlin’s emotions just with her eyes and facial expressions. The ominous music played in the scene makes it all the more disturbing.
With Harry and Jesse back on Earth-2, still no information or leads regarding Alchemy, and poor Caitlin still trying to hide her ever-growing powers from her friends, it looks as though dark times are ahead for Team Flash as they might lose their beloved Caitlin to her chilling powers. Here’s hoping Caitlin learns to control her powers and is able to remain part of the team. It just wouldn’t be the same without her.
Universal Pictures just released the second official trailer for Split, writer/director M. Night Shyamalan’s latest thriller. Shyamalan (The Village, Sixth Sense, Wayward Pines) also produced Split which stars James McAvoy (the X-Men franchise) as a man with 23 different personalities. The cast also includes Anya Taylor-Joy (The Witch), Betty Buckley (Pretty Little Liars), Jessica Sula (Recovery Road), and Haley Lu Richardson (The Edge of Seventeen). Universal Pictures has set a January 20, 2017 theatrical release date for Split.
The Plot: While the mental divisions of those with dissociative identity disorder have long fascinated and eluded science, it is believed that some can also manifest unique physical attributes for each personality, a cognitive and physiological prism within a single being. Though Kevin (McAvoy) has evidenced 23 personalities to his trusted psychiatrist, Dr. Fletcher (Buckley), there remains one still submerged who is set to materialize and dominate all the others. Compelled to abduct three teenage girls led by the willful, observant Casey (Taylor-Joy), Kevin reaches a war for survival among all of those contained within him—as well as everyone around him—as the walls between his compartments shatter apart.
Hairspray Live! executive producers Neil Meron and Craig Zadan have been involved in all of NBC’s live musical productions. The producing team has learned important lessons while working on televised live musical events, including not being daunted by the live aspect of the production. Meron and Zadan also produced the 2007 Hairspray film starring John Travolta, Nikki Blonsky, and Amanda Bynes, so they’re not only veterans at live televised musicals, but they’re also very familiar with this particular musical.
The cast of Hairspray Live! is led by newcomer Maddie Baillio and includes Harvey Fierstein, Jennifer Hudson, Ariana Grande, Kristin Chenoweth, Martin Short, and Derek Hough. NBC’s Hairspray Live! will air on December 7, 2016 at 8pm ET/PT and as rehearsals are getting underway, Meron and Zadan teamed up for a conference call to discuss the popular musical, their cast, and what fans of the movie and Broadway musical can expect from this live television event.
Neil Meron and Craig Zadan Hairspray Live! Interview:
How will you be integrating the live audience into the show?
Neil Meron: “We will be having a live audience, and it’s going to be functioning in two ways, interestingly enough. Naturally story-wise there is an audience for the ‘Corny Collins Show.’ So, we will have that as kind of a natural extension of the story of Hairspray Live. Plus, in another location, we will have just a general audience that will be there to watch, observe, react, and hopefully have a really good time.”
Can you talk about the casting process?
Craig Zadan: “Well, you know, the casting process for us depends on the kind of show we’re doing. In the last couple of years, we’ve done shows that require unknowns, so in the case of Hairspray Live we did a major search for our female lead. And last year for the Wiz Live we did a major search for our female lead. In those particular cases, it all started with looking for discovering an unknown talent that could sing, dance, and act, and carry a three-hour live show. So, that’s the beginning of the process.
Once we have had those people cast, the next step was finding the right people for the right roles. We’ve been very careful not to do stunt casting where you’re going and putting stars in roles that they don’t belong in for the sake of having names. I think that we have a lot of stars in this show, as we did in the Wiz Live, but they really were needed to be able to deliver the goods. I mean, they really needed to be the right people. And, you know, you go through each role and specify why each of these people were really special and really right for each particular part.”
Neil Meron: “If you look at the roster of the names that are in the cast, they’re a lot of them who have a history with us that are either friends or we’ve worked with them before which is always nice to be able to call on friends to kind of populate the cast.”
Which part was the most difficult to cast?
Neil Meron: “You know, it was, strangely enough, Link. We really looked and looked and then we found Garrett (Clayton). Garrett had amazing, amazing musical chops that we were not really aware of. We knew he came from Teen Beach Movie, but the depth of his talent we didn’t really know.”
Harvey Fierstein and Maddie Baillio (Photo by Brian Bowen Smith/NBC)
How did you find your new Tracy Turnblad?
Craig Zadan: “I mean, the Tracy that we’ve cast – we saw a lot of people who lined up for the open call and we saw a lot of people who submitted themselves online. The actor had to be able to really sing really well and obviously come in and sing Good Morning Baltimore gorgeously, but also do the scenes and really be right for the role as an actor. And then it’s a big dancing role so she had to really dance really, really well. When you look at a lot of people the strange thing is that you find that there are either a handful or even less people who could actually fulfill the triple threat.
It’s also looking for the confidence level. You’re taking an unknown and you’re giving them the lead in a big musical and they’re working with all of these professionals and these — in some cases — stars who have done it all. This person has to not only fit in, but even stand out from the crowd. It’s quite a weight that’s on their shoulders. Not to be redundant, but we encountered the same situation last year with the Wiz Live because we had the same requirements for our Dorothy as we did for our Tracy.”
What are the logistical challenges of this production?
Craig Zadan: “I’ll just say that logistically it’s the biggest production we’ve done so far in so many ways. Universal’s building two brand new sound stages on the Universal lot and we are going to use them as soon as they’re done. They will be done just before we need them, which is any minute. We’ll be using them and we’ll be using the backlot for exterior shots and scenes and musical numbers.
It is quite an enormous endeavor. The previous shows we’ve done — we did them out of New York on Long Island — and they were done on a sound stage that was much, much, much smaller. Here we have two huge sound stages and an exterior. So, we’re going much, much bigger this time.
A lot of it also has to do with the show. You know, I mean I think that the other shows were more contained in their conception. This show is not contained. Neil and I had the privilege earlier on of producing the movie of Hairspray and we got to do a big, huge movie musical which turned out really well and was very successful. We’re looking at this as almost as big in size and scope, the only difference is that we’re doing basically the show of Hairspray; we’re not doing the movie of Hairspray. And so a lot of people have said, ‘Oh, well you’re repeating yourself. Why would you do Hairspray again?’ But I think strangely enough we don’t feel like we’re repeating ourselves. We feel like we’re doing something that we haven’t done before, because they’re different projects in a way.”
Neil Meron: “I think the footprint of this particular production is probably the biggest of any of the live musical set-up that’s been done on television, ours included and Grease Live included. What’s wonderful about it is that we learn and we grow from each iteration. We grew in terms of the three that we did. Grease Live basically honored us, in terms of doing it live and then taking what we’ve done and putting their own mark on it. We follow that up with learning what everybody else has done before us and doing something unique again.
That’s what’s so wonderful about doing this entire genre. It’s that sense it’s kind of a new genre. We’re kind of creating it and building out with it as audiences continue to like it.”
What’s it been like working with Derek Hough as Corny Collins?
Neil Meron: “Derek is, you know, what you see is what you get. You get somebody that first of all is one of the best dancers in the world, totally charming, totally eager, has a depth of talent, always cooperative, always there. But speaking about talent, it’s also our privilege and honor to have Harvey Fierstein kind of like preserve his iconic performance from Broadway. It’s something that we are thrilled to be able to do. His performance is so strong that it should be preserved and we’re glad to be able to do it.”
Can we expect any new original songs for this production?
Craig Zadan: “We’re not doing new songs, but we are adding a few songs from the movie that Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman wrote for the film and that we all fell in love with when we did the movie. So, there will be a couple of moments where we will use some of the material from the movie. But otherwise, it’s basically the material from the Broadway show.”
You discussed reviving Wiz Live on Broadway after the live broadcast. Do you have any intention to do that with Hairspray?
Neil Meron: “Of course the goal was to get the Wiz Live to Broadway. But as anybody on the call that knows about what’s going on in the theater, there is always a log jam in terms of the available and appropriate time that we need for the show. So, it’s kind of like jets lining up on the runway. Unfortunately, we’re still on the runway with that. And in terms of a Hairspray revival, we haven’t even discussed that.”
What are the similarities and differences in how you’re approaching this production from how you approached the movie?
Neil Meron: “You know, it’s an entirely different approach since we have an original screenplay that was written for the movie and with this Harvey Fierstein re-examined the original Broadway book and wrote a new adaptation of that. So, it is more akin to doing the Broadway show as opposed to an original movie. Some of the plotting that was in the movie was written specifically to the movie, so we revert mostly to the plotting of the way it was done on Broadway. I would say that we kind of are based upon the Broadway show and took what worked on the Broadway show and then added to it and made it our own. And, mostly everything that was done on Broadway worked. It was a great show.”
Craig Zadan: “Also, the other thing you have to remember is that making a movie is so different an experience from mounting a Broadway show. Like, in certain cases you can go throughout a tremendous amount of locations outside in a movie. You can go anywhere. Here we’re thrilled to be outside, but we’re also on a backlot of a sound stage. Basically, we are limited to movement in terms of where we can go in limited space that we have is outdoors.”
You’ve mentioned that Ariana Grande won’t be singing until the end of the show. What went into that decision?
Neil Meron: “It’s a very easy answer. That’s the way it was scripted. It’s that Penny is a very, very shy kind of school-booky type of character that eventually is able to find her voice when she joins this group of kids that are trying to, in essence, change the world. So, in the end through love she’s able to find the voice and the voice is able to emerge.”
Craig Zadan: “The other aspect of the Ariana Grande question is that when we started casting, we hadn’t gotten to those roles yet. We got a call from her manager saying she would like to play Penny. We did not contact Ariana or her representatives. She contacted us and we were overwhelmed and thrilled and pinching ourselves. We’re so excited that Ariana wanted to be part of it and that she wanted to play Penny and that she didn’t come in and say, ‘Write me a new song. Give me more to sing. But, you know, I want a bigger part.’ She said, ‘I love Hairspray. I love the role of Penny. I want to play Penny. Don’t change anything. Don’t make it bigger. Let me play the part as it exists.’ I mean, which showed her passion for doing this and for the project and her not wanting to come in and say, ‘You know, make it bigger and better.’ She said, ‘I want to play what’s there.’”
What would say is the biggest take-away from the Wiz Live which may have influenced your creative decisions for Hairspray Live?
Neil Meron: “I think one of our biggest take-aways which we knew going into the Wiz Live but are still continuing with it is working with Kenny Leon on this, the director. He is just superb to work with and there’s no better actor’s director. Nobody gives production a sense of stability and vision and better than Kenny. So, we’re just thrilled to be working with him again.
Every time we’ve done it we have learned different things and get more comfortable with this genre. I think that not to be as daunted by the live aspect of it all, as we were going into it starting with Sound of Music.”
Craig Zadan: “The other aspect of it was that we had Harvey Fierstein write the book, the new book for the Wiz Live and he did an incredible job. And when he said he’d love to write the adaptation of Hairspray Live we were thrilled. That became the close collaboration as Neil pointed out between our director, Kenny Leon, on the Wiz and now our director Kenny Leon on with Harvey again on Hairspray Live.”

The story is told through four 90-minute chapters — each spanning one season: Winter, Spring, Summer, Fall — and brings back to life everything from the quaint corner diner to the dreamy Dragonfly Inn to a fast-talking, quick-witted mother-daughter love story unlike any other.
Picking up nine years after we last dropped in on the whimsical Connecticut town, Gilmore girls: A Year in the Life finds each of our leading ladies at a major crossroad: Lorelai’s relationship with Luke is at an unnerving standstill; Rory’s budding journalism career in New York has stalled before it’s even begun; and Emily’s world is turned upside down following the untimely passing of her beloved husband, Richard.
