Season three of The CW’s The Flash will be kicking off with an episode titled “Flashpoint,” which will establish the altered timeline and set the tone for the much-anticipated new season. In season two everything was flipped on its head when The Flash (Grant Gustin) traveled back in time, saved his mom, and created a new alternate timeline. Discussing what’s in store during roundtable interviews at the 2016 San Diego Comic Con, writers/executive producers Aaron Helbing and Todd Helbing confirmed their version will be different than the comics. They also revealed they’ve made sure to make the storyline accessible to audiences who’ve never read any of The Flash comics.

Season three of The Flash premieres on October 4, 2016.

Todd and Aaron Helbing Interview:

How difficult was it planning the Flashpoint storyline?

Todd Helbing: “It’s like any of those iconic moments in Flash. You want to make sure you do right. But it’s also, the way we approach all these stories are we know what happened in the comics but we take that event and we sort of run it through The Flash television show filter so we can tell the same story but with our spin on it. I mean it was challenging, but it wasn’t impossible.”

Aaron Helbing: “There’s always going to be certain expectations that we’re going to hit for everybody. I feel like we do. It’s a really big episode. It’s actually an emotional one. It’s a lot of fun.”

Todd Helbing: “One part that was hard is you’re asking the audience in the first episode to experience, very much like Earth-2 the first time, to experience a different reality. We always approach it like, ‘Would our mother understand what is going on right now?’ Because she doesn’t read comic books.”

Aaron Helbing: “She’s never read a comic book.”

Todd Helbing: “So, if we can get her to get it, I feel like we’ve been successful and I feel like she’ll understand it.”

You’re doing your own version of Flashpoint but was there ever a time you were trying to get Thomas Wayne introduced into it? He’s kind of key to the comic book version.

Todd Helbing: “I think there’s a long list of people and characters that we would love to do and maybe did, maybe didn’t do. But there’s the realities of what we can and can’t use. We work very closely obviously with DC and Geoff Johns and Dan Evans and it’s kind of like, ‘Okay, so what can we use in this version?’ Then they tell us and that’s what we do.”

Knowing that Flashpoint affects the other shows of the DC universe, how do you approach that?

Aaron Helbing: “We’re lucky because we work with Greg Berlanti who oversees everything. It’s the most amazing thing I’ve ever seen is someone who can know exactly what’s happening on every show at the exact same time, so he knows exactly how to balance them and what’s going to affect which particular show. We’re just really lucky because we get to work with Greg really closely and Marc [Guggenheim] and Phil [Klemmer] and Andrew [Kreisberg] and Ali [Adler], and be mindful of what’s going to happen in each show and what’s going to affect them.”

Do you think that’s the key to the success of the DC shows?

Todd Helbing: “Yes, along from working closely with DC and then having really one person filtering that version down. You know, it’s like where we work there’s two floors. It’s like Arrow, Supergirl, Legends, and Flash, so we literally are like from here to the doorway away from talking to Marc Guggenheim and Wendy Mericle. Whenever we have questions, we can all get on the same page very easily. If it was four showrunners that never interacted, you wouldn’t be able to do it.”

Seasons one and two had big bads that were the overall driving force. Is season three more self-contained stories or is there going to be a big bad?

Aaron Helbing: “There’s going to be two big bads. One will be a speedster and one will be another meta-human. They’re both very formidable.”

What can you say about the four-way crossover?

Todd Helbing: “Storywise, we know what we’re doing. It was quite a juggle. You’ve got to figure out scheduling issues and adding another show last year was very difficult, adding another show this year. But yeah, we basically with Greg worked out that story and it’s going to be awesome.”

The series is moving to Wednesdays for the second part of season four starring Travis Fimmel, Clive Standen, Linus Roache, Katheryn Winnick, Gustaf Skarsgard, and Alexander Ludwig. Part one of the current season has garnered 4.3 million viewers and, according to History, is one of the top 10 cable scripted dramas.

It’s not a story of one man, but a saga of Ragnar and his sons.”

Season five of the critically acclaimed drama is currently shooting in Ireland.

The Plot: After being defeated in a monumental battle in Paris against his brother Rollo (Clive Standen), Ragnar disappeared following his humiliating loss. Vikings then took an enormous leap forward during the midseason finale, time-jumping to a new era in its characters’ lives.

In the midseason premiere, Ragnar’s reappearance in Kattegat triggers a chain of events no one – except the Seer – could have ever imagined. He unexpectedly arrives home to see what has become of his sons and to handle unfinished business in Wessex with King Ecbert (Linus Roache). Meanwhile, Lagertha (Katheryn Winnick) plans a power play in Kattegat and Bjorn (Alexander Ludwig) prepares to fulfill his long-held dream to explore the Mediterranean in a sleek new boat built for him by Floki (Gustaf Skarsgård).

‘Pitch’ Review: Kylie Bunbury Shines in Fox’s New Baseball Drama

Kylie Bunbury stars in Pitch

Is Fox’s new baseball series Pitch a home run? No, but it has the potential to score a ratings win if it doesn’t fall victim to convenient romantic storylines rather than allowing the show’s main character to stand on her own. Hopefully, the writers won’t take what could be a female empowerment story that inspires young women and lessen its impact with clubhouse romantic entanglements and unnecessary love stories.

The series stars Kylie Bunbury (Under the Dome) as Ginny Baker, the first female baseball player to make it to the major league. Baker’s a talented pitcher who’s called up from the minors to fill the fifth spot in the San Diego Padres’ rotation. The first episode explores a little of her backstory, including how her father (Michael Beach) spent long hours teaching her to not only throw a nasty screwball but also to never give up on their shared dream of baseball greatness. Unfortunately, his constant demand for practice and perfection led to Ginny feeling resentful over the fact she didn’t have a normal childhood or close friends. Those lingering daddy issues will apparently rear up throughout the season.

Episode one also introduces the colorful characters who’ll pack the Padres clubhouse, led by Mark-Paul Gosselaar as Mike Lawson. Lawson’s an all-star catcher whose job it becomes to not only settle Ginny’s nerves on the field but also back her up in the clubhouse. Obviously, being the first female player to venture into this all-male club upsets the applecart, so she’s fortunate to have center fielder Blip Sanders (Mo McRae) in her corner. The two became friends during their days in the minors, and Blip’s wife, Evelyn (Meagan Holder), is one of Ginny’s few confidantes.

Also in Ginny’s corner is her take-no-prisoners agent, played by Ali Larter. Larter chews the scenery as Amelia Slater, a passionate, dedicated, and determined agent who left Hollywood to dedicate herself to just one client: Ginny. Amelia’s job is to promote – and protect, when necessary – the first female in Major League Baseball, and that means she’ll be butting heads with Padres General Manager Oscar Arguella (Mark Consuelos). There’s even a Gerard Butler name drop as Amelia quickly and effectively puts Oscar in his place.

Obviously, Ginny’s going to be sticking around with the Padres for a while or else Pitch would end in a matter of episodes, so it’s not a spoiler to say that whatever hardship she’s going to face won’t lead to her getting kicked off the team anytime soon. Pitch was made with the support of Major League Baseball, so it’s also highly unlikely we’ll be seeing anything controversial incorporated into the storylines. San Diego’s Petco Park is actually used to film the series…and I have to throw this in as a disillusioned, constantly disappointed native San Diegan/Padres fan…it’s nice to see it depicted with a big crowd and enthusiastic applause. That’s a rare sight given the Padres’ dismal win/loss record over the past six years.

The Padres haven’t had a winning season since 2010, and my initial thought when Pitch’s first trailer arrived was maybe we should find talented female ballplayers not just to pitch but fill more positions on the field in real life. It couldn’t hurt at this point.

The Bottom Line:

What’s going to sell this series to viewers is not just the premise but also Kylie Bunbury’s outstanding performance. Bunbury’s Ginny is not just a ground-breaking baseball player who’s given #43 to wear because it’s one number up from Jackie Robinson’s retired number. There’s a lot of emotional depth to the character thanks to Bunbury’s performance, and she completely draws in the audience and gets them to root for Ginny to overcome all odds. Mark-Paul Gosselaar’s a surprising choice to play catcher, but it works and best of all the chemistry between Mark-Paul Gosselaar and Kylie Bunbury is evident from their first onscreen meeting. Again, hopefully, the writers will smartly avoid the clichés and not throw them together as a romantic couple but instead allow them to grow as platonic teammates.

On a side note, it’s also nice to see two Sons of Anarchy alumni – Mo McRae and Michael Beach – reunite with SoA director/executive producer Paris Barclay who also handles those duties on Pitch.

Pitch has an intriguing setup and a terrific cast. It also has a lot of heart, along with some decent baseball sequences. It’s impossible to tell from just one episode, but Fox has the potential to hit one out of the park with Pitch. The pilot delivered the heat, now let’s see if episodes two, three, and four can keep the momentum going.

GRADE: B

Pitch will premiere on September 22, 2016 at 9pm PT/ET on Fox.

‘The Vampire Diaries’ Season 8 New Teaser Trailer: ‘The Devil’

Vampire Diaries stars Ian Somerhalder and Paul Wesley

The final season of The CW’s popular supernatural series The Vampire Diaries will premiere on Friday, October 21, 2016 at 8pm ET/PT. The eighth season will focus on the search for Damon (Ian Somerhalder) and Enzo (Michael Malarkey) who’ve gone over to the dark side and are off on a killing spree. Bonnie (Kat Graham) will, of course, be helping out with the search while also attempting to get her powers back. And Stefan (Paul Wesley) will be leading the hunt for his missing brother as the series heads toward – hopefully – a satisfying end.

The big question about the eighth and final season is if Nina Dobrev will return to say good-bye. At Comic-Con, series creator Julie Plec told us she’s hoping Dobrev will be back this season. “Look, all I can say because there is nothing written in stone but Nina made me a promise when she left that she would come back and be a part of the goodbye, and I intend on holding her to that,” explained Plec. “And I’m sure she intends on living up to it as well so we just have to figure it out – the how, the when, the what – but it would be a real tragedy if we couldn’t bring that story back around full circle.”
