Annabelle 2 was directed by Lights Out‘s David F. Sandberg from a script by Annabelle screenwriter Gary Dauberman. The cast of the sequel includes Stephanie Sigman, Alicia Vela-Bailey, and Miranda Otto.

‘Mr. Robot’ Recap Season 2 Episode 11: eps 2.9_python-pt1.p7z

Mr Robot star Portia Doubleday

Season two episode 11 of USA Network’s Mr. Robot is the first part of a two-part finale. It begins with Elliot (Rami Malek) musing that Mr. Robot is always one step ahead. He thinks that lucid dreaming will help him learn what Mr. Robot (Christian Slater) knows. During lucid dreams not only are dreamers aware that they are dreaming but they can exert some control over the characters and events in the dream. To enter this state Elliot chants “mind awake, body asleep,” and invites viewers to chant with him perhaps to enter the dream state with him.

Much of the episode does have dream-like qualities. Angela (Portia Doubleday) is transported in a van with a security partition. After she arrives at a residence, Angela is led past a stark kitchen with white cabinets and black counters, past a living room decorated solely in black and white, and locked in a dark room lit only by a fish tank and skylights. Red is a key color in the series and the carpet and seat cushions are red as is the old rotary phone on the desk. It is notable that in Elliot’s mental transformation of the prison to his mother’s house earlier in the season, he spoke to Tyrell on a red rotary phone. Perhaps this entire segment with Angela is part of Elliot’s imagination or lucid dream.

That Angela is interrogated by a child (who looks like a young Angela) using an old Commodore computer adds to the surreal setting. At one point the phone rings and a computer-generated voice on the other end asks her about a key. Angela finally says that the key was in her fist. Dreams are full of imagery that may seem illogical during waking hours and there is much imagery in this scene: the key; the outdated computer; the fish tank with one fish that dies (Elliot had Querty); the outdated red phone; and the Lolita book on the desk. Whiterose enters the room and suggests that Angela’s mother and Elliot’s father died for a reason—that they were sacrificed for the greater good. Whiterose says that without their deaths, Angela and Elliot would be different people.

The idea of alternate realities was introduced earlier in the season when the FBI operation to find the perpetrators of the 5/9 hack was dubbed ”Operation Berenstain” (see episode 8 recap for explanation). Whiterose tells Angela that she wants her to drop her revenge mission to destroy E Corp (which would shut down Whiterose’s project) and to believe that simply by willing something it can come true.

The next scene has Elliot saying “Mind awake, body asleep,” and wondering how long he was asleep which supports the idea that the segment with Angela was Elliot’s lucid dream. He observes Mr. Robot going through his mail and finding a “Red Wheelbarrow BBQ” flyer. A red wheelbarrow has appeared previously, (e.g., hot Carla in prison/recreation yard segment among others). Elliot watches over Mr. Robot’s shoulder as he deciphers the multi-step code leading him to a phone number. They both listen to a computerized voice (one of many this episode) giving instructions to a cab waiting at 25th and 8th streets.

Meanwhile, FBI Agent Dom DiPierro (Grace Gummer) is in the hospital and her boss, FBI Agent Santiago, speaks with her in private. An agitated Dom tells him that she warned him that the Dark Army would come after Cisco and that the Chinese government is involved. It now is a matter of national security and an act of war, Dom says. Agent Santiago tells her that he believes her, but that the US will do nothing because of the two trillion dollars in no-interest loans China has extended to E Corp.

At home a tired Dom is having difficulty sleeping and asks Alexa a series of questions. A lonely Dom tearfully asks if Alexa is happy, or alone, or if Alexa loves her. Alexa, in another computerized voice of the episode, responds that she is not capable of that.

In another subplot, Phillip Price (Michael Cristofer) is told by a US government official that it is unconstitutional to make his own currency (i.e., E coin). In response, Price says that hard cash is fading rapidly and that unlike bitcoin, E coin wouldn’t be controlled by the Chinese, and in fact, E coin could be used against China. Furthermore, he would provide visibility in loans and every wallet to the government and rebuild the banking sector without federal funds.

Evidently Price was persuasive because on the TV at Angela’s lawyer’s home, the newscaster is discussing the E coin loan program designed to provide the economy with a much-needed jump start. Angela knocks on the lawyer’s door, which happens to be red. Angela tells the lawyer not to call her anymore. During the conversation, there is a brief rewind in the TV broadcast.

In the final scene, Elliot gets in the cab as directed by the earlier phone call to find Tyrell there. Elliot doesn’t believe that he is really seeing him. In fact, Tyrell doesn’t quite feel real; his voice and looks seem off. This Tyrell (perhaps imaginary) tells him that the Dark Army said that stage 2 is ready and that Elliot will be pleased. As they walk off, he says, reminiscent of the last line of the film Casa Blanca, “This is the beginning of a beautiful relationship.”

As in past episodes there were recurring elements in this episode: the color red; the red phone; the red wheelbarrow; and the computerized voices. In the finale next week, perhaps we will see Dom interview Darlene (Carly Chiakin), learn the fate of Cisco, Mobley, and Trenton, learn more about Joanna’s role, or perhaps it will end with another cliffhanger.

‘Nocturnal Animals’ Teaser Trailer with Amy Adams and Jake Gyllenhaal

Writer/director Tom Ford’s Nocturnal Animals won the Grand Jury Prize at this year’s Venice International Film Festival and will open in limited release on November 18, 2016 followed by a wide release on December 9th. Focus Features just released a teaser trailer for the film which is currently sitting at 77% fresh on RottenTomatoes.

Although it snagged the Grand Jury Prize, it didn’t win over every critic, with Time Magazine’s Stephanie Zacharek saying, “You could just dub it a ‘stylish exercise’ and call it a day.” On the other hand, Variety’s Owen Gleiberman called it a winner, describing it as an “ambitious high-wire noir thriller with Amy Adams and Jake Gyllenhaal in an explosive tale of love, violence, and revenge.” Even with mixed reviews, there’s buzz surrounding both Adams’ and Gyllenhaal’s performances and both are likely to be frequently mentioned during awards season.

Nocturnal Animals is based on the book Tony and Susan by Austin Wright. Ford (A Single Man) adapted it for the screen.

The Plot: From writer/director Tom Ford comes a haunting romantic thriller of shocking intimacy and gripping tension that explores the thin lines between love and cruelty and revenge and redemption. Academy Award nominees Amy Adams and Jake Gyllenhaal star as a divorced couple discovering dark truths about each other and themselves in Nocturnal Animals.

‘American Horror Story’ Season 6 Episode 1 Recap: My Roanoke Nightmare

American Horror Story Season 6 Teaser Logo

Wait…what? If you feel frustrated and/or confused after watching FX’s American Horror Story season six’s first episode, you are not alone. Series creator Ryan Murphy and FX spent the last couple of months mercilessly teasing AHS fans with two dozen short trailers, none of which gave away any real clues as to what AHS season six is about. And after watching the first episode, many fans are still unsure what to expect from this new season. Is the theme really “My Roanoke Nightmare” or is that just what episode one and two will be about? The title card read American Horror Story: My Roanoke Nightmare but are we going to be getting new reenactments over the course of the season featuring different characters reliving different ghostly encounters? Why did the episode end five minutes early? What the heck has Murphy and his creative team got planned and why wasn’t Evan Peters or Lady Gaga in this first episode? So many questions, so very few concrete answers.

Reading through Twitter it appears the reviews are mixed, with some fans calling it the creepiest season premiere to date while others claim to have been bored by season six’s first episode. After all the teasing and the vaguest of hints as to the season’s theme, I’m not sure that even those who think they’ve got it figured out really know what’s going on.

”Chapter One” Recap:

Ryan Murphy kicks off the show promising to answer the question that’s been haunting everybody. Nice try, Mr. Murphy. Questions still linger.

A woman in voice-over tells us she’s has always felt danger “there.” Then we see flashes of a creepy house, a dead pig, the promise this story “may contain disturbing images,” and a warning viewer discretion is advised. Doors open by themselves, a woman is held under the water, and the “My Roanoke Nightmare” title card makes its first appearance.

Shelby (Lily Rabe) speaks to the camera documentary-style, telling the audience her friends thought she and her husband were too perfect. Matt (Andre Holland) also speaks to the camera, explaining he won a work raffle for a free yoga class and that’s where he met Shelby. They fell in love, settled in Los Angeles, and Shelby discovered she was pregnant. They celebrated Matt’s promotion and Shelby’s pregnancy with a night on the town. Unfortunately, a gang attacked Matt and knocked him out as part of an initiation. It was a horrible attack and Matt was hospitalized.

In a reenactment of the events, we see Sarah Paulson playing the part of Shelby. At the hospital she learns Matt hasn’t regained consciousness. Shelby visits Matt’s bedside and now Matt is being played by Paulson’s The People v O.J. Simpson co-star Cuba Gooding Jr. He grabs her hand, waking up as soon as they touch.

Current Shelby (for the remainder of the recap I’ll use Flashback Name and Current Name to tell the timelines apart) tells us she knew Matt was going to be okay, but Matt reveals Shelby lost the baby. They both, still recalling the incident in separate statements to the camera, become emotional. In a voice-over, Matt says they had to leave LA and opted to move to North Carolina. It’s where he grew up and where his family is still living.

Flashback Matt and Shelby walk through the woods with a picnic basket while Current Shelby describes the day. They see an old farmhouse, wander in, and discover it has three bedrooms, two stories, and a basement. Matt loves the house which was built in 1792, and the couple bid on it the next day even though locals warn them not to. They win the mini-bidding war with a final offer of $40,000 and Shelby can’t believe they now own this house.

Current Shelby loves the house and Matt, but says she immediately felt danger there. The camera pans up again to the exterior, focusing on two large windows that form a heart. Minutes earlier, an interior shot showed those same windows forming an upside heart. Bizarre! Even more bizarre is there’s something lurking in the trees outside, spying on the happy couple.

Current Matt tells us he loved the house but sensed a “reluctance” from Shelby, but he thought she missed the city and was still dealing with the miscarriage.

Flashback Matt and Shelby are making love in their new home when they hear crazy sounds and banging. Matt explores outside and finds things are a mess. He asks whoever did it to reveal themselves, and suddenly out of the dark a large bucket comes flying at his head.

Current Matt says he was thinking that it was a racially motivated attack because now they’re in the South. He always worries people will hate them because they’re an interracial couple. He thought the hillbillies who lost the auction might be behind the attacks.

Flashback Shelby is making a meal when she hears things falling on the glass roof above her head. It’s raining teeth! Yes, teeth. Shelby goes outside and steps on them, not realizing what they are. Matt arrives a while later and Shelby tells him about the dental rain. The teeth are all gone, and Matt tells her it was just a hailstorm that he drove through on his way home.

Flashback Matt packs for a business trip and Shelby assures him she’s okay with being alone. Matt’s concerned, but she tells him to go because they have bills to pay.

Current Shelby confesses that she actually wanted some alone time because Matt was being too protective. She wanted him to go away. She also says it felt normal because he went away on business a lot and they always had great welcome home sex.

Flashback Shelby spends the time doing yoga and trying to relax. A banging window shutter causes her to jump while cooking dinner, but she quickly recovers from the fright. Later, glass of wine in hand, she walks down the hallway and sees two women crossing from one side of the hall to the other. She doesn’t know what to make of it and calls out, “Is anyone there?” No one answers and she cautiously walks forward. She flips the light on in what looks like a study, doesn’t see anything, and leaves the room. She then walks outside to spend some time in the outdoor spa. Her few moments of relaxation are over as the brief clip from the episode’s opening of a woman held underwater now play out. She’s attacked and there’s no one around to help her. Fortunately, we know both she and Matt will survive whatever they encounter at this house as they’re alive and narrating the story.

Current Matt explains Shelby called him and he was two hours away when she was assaulted. He drove home as quickly as possible and there was a police officer on the scene when he pulled up to the house. In the reenactment we learn the officer found no evidence to back up Shelby’s claim that her attackers were dressed in old costumes, holding pitchforks and torches. (Remember, this house is located in Roanoke.) He thinks Shelby was drunk but Matt thinks it’s the hillbillies. The cop knows who he’s talking about and heads off to talk to them, telling Matt to get a gun.

Current Matt says he just knew the cop wasn’t going to do anything about the assault. He also thought he had a condescending attitude.

Flashback Matt asks Shelby if it was the guys from the auction because her description makes no sense. Shelby sticks with her story. She was choking on the water and when she surfaced, they were gone. Shelby swears she wasn’t imagining things, and Matt swears he believes her.

Current Shelby says she felt guilty. She couldn’t tell him she didn’t want to live there.

Flashback Matt is awake in bed, hearing all sorts of strange noises coming from outside – guttural sounds, growling, and other weird noises. The pig from the opening sequence is dead on his doorstep when he opens the front door. He buries it without telling Shelby and then sets up security cameras around the property, all synced to his cellphone. He has to return to Raleigh and he’s worried about Shelby, so he asks his sister, Lee (played by Angela Bassett in the re-enactment), to stay with her.

Current Lee (Adina Porter) admits she and Shelby never liked each other. Lee always thought Shelby’s yoga was silly and definitely not a real job. Lee was on track to be a detective when she was busted for taking drugs, an addiction she says she developed after getting hurt on the job.

Flashback Lee is part of a drug bust in a crack house. Going through the building, she hears a baby crying and goes to help it. She’s shot from behind while looking at the baby. The drugs helped with the pain but she had to take more and more. After taking who knows how many pills, she’s involved in a high-speed chase in pursuit of a serial rapist. He crashes his car, she tries to arrest him, but he puts a gun to his head and kills himself. An officer on the scene finds her pills in the squad car.

Lee’s fired from her job and her husband wants a divorce. She keeps forgetting to pick up their daughter because of the drugs.

Current Lee says her ex-husband has full custody of their child and she only sees her three days out of every 14.

Flashback Shelby cooks dinner for herself and Lee, with a wine glass close at hand. As she’s chopping carrots, she hears a noise and goes to investigate. It’s a banging/scraping type of sound but Shelby can’t find its source. When she returns to the kitchen, the knife she was using is now sticking straight up from the meat. Lee walks in, scares Shelby, and Shelby thinks it was Lee who moved the knife. The fact there’s no love lost between the in-laws is evident. Lee asks her not to drink inside the house because she’s barely hanging onto her sobriety. Lee also reveals she’s still packing a gun and knows she’s there to protect Shelby.

Current Lee says she didn’t believe the stories Shelby told her brother and thought it was all because of the fact Shelby wanted to move back to LA. She soon learned the truth.

Flashback Lee wakes to the noises her brother’s been hearing. She gets out of bed and a wine bottle rolls toward her in the dark. She thinks Shelby did it, but Shelby swears it wasn’t her.

Current Matt says his phone buzzed around that time and it was an automated alert from the security system. Flashback Matt looks at his phone and sees men with torches walking around the property. He calls home but doesn’t reach Shelby.

Current Matt knows this mob isn’t there to welcome his family to the neighborhood.

Inside the house, Flashback Shelby and Lee continue to argue. Neither hear their phones ringing, but Lee hears someone in the house. They creep into the hall and go downstairs toward the noise. Of course Lee’s gun is locked in a drawer upstairs as they head toward danger. Lee grabs a hammer and then they see an old TV is turned on, playing a weird home movie. It’s Blair Witch-ey found footage, but with a bizarre walking on two legs pig-like thing. Shelby and Lee don’t understand why someone would break in and play a tape. Just then all the lights in the house go out.

Flashback Matt watches as the men with torches enter his home.

Current Matt says the cops brushed him off, so he knew he could get there quicker than they would even from 100 miles away. He kept begging God to get him home in time to save his wife and sister.

Flashback Shelby and Lee hear “a lot of someones” outside. They stay as quiet as possible, hoping the people will leave. Then Lee decides they have to get out of the basement. They head upstairs and find creepy Blair Witch-ey wood figures are strung up all over the house. Cut to a commercial break advertising the new Blair Witch sequel.

Current Matt says he made it home and the cops had been by the house, chalking the figures up to vandalism. Matt thinks it was terrorism not vandalism.

Flashback Shelby says these people broke into the house and locked her and Lee in the basement. She’s freaked out they were in her home and that they were lured into the basement to watch a video. They show Matt the video and he thinks it’s a fake, something the rednecks created to get them to leave. Shelby wants to leave immediately, but Matt doesn’t want to because this is their home. Shelby’s had enough and storms out of the basement. Lee hears Shelby pulling out of the driveway.

Current Shelby explains humans respond to danger with either fight or flight reactions, and she chose flight.

Flashback Shelby drives off, answering her cell phone and not paying attention to the road. She hits a woman who’s standing in the center of the street and gets out to help her. She’s no longer in the road and as the fog creeps in, Shelby sees the lady dressed in colonial attire walk into the woods. She chases after her into the forest but she’s gone. Shelby runs around and is quickly lost in the woods. She tries to settle herself down, heading toward noises in the woods. More creepy doll figures are strung up in the trees surrounding her. She runs away, trips on a branch, and the earth starts moving under her fingers like it’s breathing. She gets to her feet and runs into the middle of a group of people holding torches (one of the men is played by Wes Bentley). A man missing part of his head stumbles toward her and she screams. The episode ends five minutes early.

The credits include Evan Peters and Cheyenne Jackson who weren’t in the episode (unless I somehow missed them), but not Lady Gaga. After the episode ended, the preview for the next episode was made available online after 11pm PT. It looks like the people who are terrorizing Shelby, Matt, and Lee are, according to Shelby, devil worshippers.

Show of hands of those who think Matt is in on the bizarre happenings at the Roanoke house. He’s conveniently absent whenever anything unusual takes place.

American Horror Story Season 6 Recaps:

‘Star Trek: Discovery’ and ‘Good Wife’ Spin-Off Switch Premiere Dates

Star Trek Teaser Logo

CBS will be debuting Star Trek: Discovery a little later than originally planned. The series, which will air on CBS All Access, will now arrive in May 2017 rather than January 2017. The new Star Trek is executive produced by Alex Kurtzman, Bryan Fuller, Heather Kadin, Gretchen J. Berg, Aaron Harberts, Rod Roddenberry, and Trevor Roth, with the 2017 series marking the first new Star Trek show in more than 10 years. The series is being pushed back a few months in order to give the creative team more time to deliver a high quality series, according to CBS.

“Bringing Star Trek back to television carries a responsibility and mission: to connect fans and newcomers alike to the series that has fed our imaginations since childhood,” stated executive producers Alex Kurtzman and Bryan Fuller. “We aim to dream big and deliver, and that means making sure the demands of physical and post-production for a show that takes place entirely in space, and the need to meet an air date, don’t result in compromised quality. Before heading into production, we evaluated these realities with our partners at CBS and they agreed: Star Trek deserves the very best, and these extra few months will help us achieve a vision we can all be proud of.”

“The series template and episodic scripts that Alex and Bryan have delivered are incredibly vivid and compelling,” added David Stapf, President, CBS Television Studios. “They are building a new, very ambitious Star Trek world for television, and everyone involved supports their vision for the best timing to bring to life what we all love on the page.”

The Star Trek: Discovery move left a spot in the schedule that will now be filled by The Good Wife follow-up series. The first season of The Good Wife spin-off will now premiere in February 2017, with the first episode airing on CBS before moving to CBS All Access. Christine Baranski returns as Diane Lockhart in the sequel which picks up one year after The Good Wife‘s final episode. Cush Jumbo is also back as Lucca Quinn.

The Good Wife‘s creators Robert and Michelle King are back as showrunners and executive producers. Ridley Scott, David Zucker, Liz Glotzer, and Brooke Kennedy are also on board as executive producers.

Samantha Smith Interview: ‘Supernatural’ Season 12 and Mary Winchester

When The CW’s Supernatural returns for season 12 it will be with Samantha Smith rejoining the cast as Sam (Jensen Ackles) and Dean’s (Jared Padalecki) mom, Mary Winchester. Smith was part of the Supernatural gang that made it to this year’s San Diego Comic Con and during our roundtable interview, she said that Mary won’t have an easy time accepting this new world she finds herself in right away. Smith also confirmed Mary will be returning to her life as a hunter, a life she never wanted for her sons. “She is going back to where she felt grounded and using her knowledge. They may have different hunting styles…we’ll see,” said Smith.

Supernatural season 12 will premiere on October 10, 2016.

Samantha Smith Interview:

How is it going to be to play the mother returning from the dead dynamic?

Samantha Smith: “Well, just as an actress it’s been incredibly interesting and completely overwhelming going from having been Mary who was one thing to Mary who is now a fully developed human, not just the really sweet mom or the evil Eve or whatever but everything – anger, fear, sadness, happiness, everything. Coming into a world that is a completely different reality than when she left, including the fact that she has two grown children who were tiny when she left them and now they have been raised completely without her influence in a way that she may not really want. And Mary will find her footing by going back to what she knew which is hunting.”

Will it be difficult for her to accept the world as it is now?

Samantha Smith: “I think so. I think it will be challenging. I keep saying it’s like drinking from a firehose. You’re like, ‘Oh my god!’ Everything is changing and she’s in it and she doesn’t have time to sort of sit and learn about it. It’s just, ‘Go!’ and just deal, and that’s really hard.”

What will this new relationship look like between Sam, Dean, and Mary?

Samantha Smith: “Well, I think as weird and difficult and challenging as it will be for Mary to suddenly be a parent to grown up children, their mother didn’t leave them when they were little. She died. She was gone for good and now she’s back. And so having to not only accept that and be happy about, but who is she? Is she who they thought she was? Does she have to be a certain kind of person? Is it disappointing in any way? There’s all that conflict and guilt and any resentment they have. It wasn’t my choice but I still left. So, there’s a lot to explore.

It’s going to take a minute, I think. (Laughing) I don’t think they’re going to wrap it up in the first episode.”

Did you think you’d be back on Supernatural?

Samantha Smith: “I did. I thought I would be back in the series finale. I thought they would call me and Mary and John (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) would be brought back to life. My expectation was that they wouldn’t know who the boys were, just to make it tragic. So when they called me for the season finale I thought the show was over. I was like, ‘Oh, it’s over,’ and then they’re like, ‘Oh, no. No, not over.’ ‘Good! Let’s go – keep going!’ So I really had no idea how they’d bring me back. We’ve run out of options. I’ve been a ghost, I’ve been a hallucination. I’ve been Eve. I’ve been in Heaven and I’ve been in fake Heaven. All these things! I’ve been a fake older mom. There’s not really much else to do there.”

Have you kept up with the series over the years?

Samantha Smith: “Yes. I’ve kept apprised of everything that’s going on. I’ve watched it quite a bit. I feel part of it, even though I haven’t been there in several years. I just feel present, and I liked the feeling. I get it. I get why the fans like it so much.”

What do you think is going through her mind in the first meeting with Dean?

Samantha Smith: “Well, I don’t think she knows where she is or what’s happening. ‘Why am I here? I was on fire a minute ago. What is going on?’ And in much the same way I don’t think Dean is positive she is who she looks like she is, she may not know who he is at all or if he’s really who he says he is. I think as a hunter your first instinct is doubt, always.”

Does she remember her time in Heaven or is it that she’s picking up immediately after she died?

Samantha Smith: (Laughing) “I think it’s both, but I can’t explain that exactly.”
