‘Lucifer’ Season 2: Ildy Modrovich Interview on Lucifer’s Mom, the Band, and Brotherly Love

Lucifer writer/executive producer Ildy Modrovich was wearing a Lou Cypher’s Disciples band T-shirt during our interview at the 2016 San Diego Comic-Con, which caused our small table of journalists to immediately all turn green with envy. Modrovich was a back-up singer in the #TeamLucifer band which took first place against stiff competition from the casts and crews of iZombie and Arrow.

“We won and they were the losers,” said Modrovich, laughing. (Seriously, how do we get one of those shirts?!)

But talking about the singing talents of the Lucifer gang wasn’t all Modrovich enthusiastically discussed in our interview. She also provided a sneak peek into what fans of the series, which will return for its second season on September 19, 2016, can expect and how the introduction of Lucifer’s mom will change things up.

Ildy Modrovich Interview:

Was it the plan all along that if you were renewed for a second season that you’d be introducing the mom?

Ildy Modrovich: “I wish that I could say, ‘Yes, that was the plan,’ but no, it was not. You know what we realized is that the thing that when I think about religion, you think about kind of squishing all religions together – the yin the yang of Buddhism and Christianity – there’s a feminine energy. There’s a female and a masculine energy and it was important to us to really explore the feminine energy and how that affects Lucifer (played by Tom Ellis), not on a romantic level but as a maternal figure for him. Since you can’t really bring God down – maybe we will, never say never – that’s why we’re like, ‘You know what? Let’s have mom come to town and see how he reacts to that.'”

How does he react to that?

Ildy Modrovich: “They just play Monopoly, just hang out. Have movie night. No, it’s really the arc of our season. There’s going to be many, many, many levels. The thing is, we get to see Lucifer now have parental acceptance and love in person. He’s never experienced that. You’ve never seen him, except for Chloe, be truly kind of accepted and loved. And how he reacts to that is interesting because it will make him uncomfortable, for one. But also Tom plays this great vulnerability and you just want to love him. He’s this rogue, this bad boy, but you want to hug him. So it’s very cathartic and satisfying to watch somebody love him unconditionally, which is what mothers do.”

When you dropped the bombshell at the end of season one that mother was coming, did you already have an actress in mind?

Ildy Modrovich: “You know what’s funny? Yes. Yes, we did. When Joe (Henderson) and I first started talking about it, she was our archetype. Tricia (Helfer) was our archetype. ‘Well, if we could get Tricia Helfer, that would be great,’ and then we kind of went off and went on 900 different tangents. We came back to who we kind of designed the character around. We are just so lucky because Tricia…I can’t even. She nails it.

The very first day she was on set I called Joe. You have to technically only have two episodes before you pick somebody up for the season and after the first scene she dropped the fricking mic. She killed it. She has such complexity. She’s funny. She’s compassionate. She’s formidable. She can scare the heck out of you. She’s just, unfortunately, not good looking. (Laughing) She’s phenomenal.”

And the dynamic between Lucifer and Amenadiel (played by D.B. Woodside) is going to be more of a friendship maybe? What’s it going to be like?

Ildy Modrovich: “Well, that’s the other thing. Speaking kind of segueing from mom into the whole family dynamic, mom – again – it was important to us not to make her this arch kind of character because she’s our feminine representative. We wanted her to have complex, real motives that moved her. And the same with the relationship, her needs are going to conflict with Lucifer’s at some point and Amenadiel will sort of more side with mom’s needs and goals and desires. So we’ll have Lucifer and Amenadiel kind of start off the season side-by-side and then possibly come together, go apart, come together, go apart, as families do.”

Are Lucifer and Amenadiel going to need more therapy?

Ildy Modrovich: “I hope so. I hope they do. Don’t we all need therapy? I know I do.”

And circling back to music, Tom Ellis will be singing again this coming season?

Ildy Modrovich: “Yes! He’s singing in the first episode. I think I can say that.”

How many episodes is season two?

Ildy Modrovich: “Right now it’s 13. We’re definitely getting a back order, we just don’t know how many. It’s five or nine so it’s either going to be 18 or 22 episodes this season.”

Does that change how you approach it if you’re not sure how many episodes you’ll have in season two?

Ildy Modrovich: “Oh, it’s a bear. It’s full bananas, if you will. Yeah. We really want to know how many episodes there are! Right now we’re building to episode 10 because that’s the holiday break. And then we’re sort of a little vague after that. We think it’s going to be 18 so we have that arc, so we’ll just have to plop on a bigger, better four episodes if we get that. But it’s not pleasant to not know.”

Marvel and Hulu Team Up on ‘Runaways’

Runaways Comic Book Series

Brian K. Vaughan and Adrian Alphona’s Runaways comic book series will be adapted into a television series. Marvel Television and Hulu are working on the series which will be executive produced by Marvel’s Head of Television Jeph Loeb, Jim Chory (Marvel’s Daredevil), and co-showrunners/writers Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage (The O.C.). Lis Rowinski (Fun Size) is on board to produce.

Marvel’s official announcement didn’t include any details on when we can expect Runaways to premiere on Hulu, nor did it include any casting news.

“We’ve known the Runaways‘ story would make great television,” stated Jeph Loeb, Executive Producer and Head of Marvel Television, “and being lucky enough to have Josh and Stephanie–who have time and again created shows that speak so genuinely to this exact audience–write and produce the series is nothing short of remarkable.”

“I’m a long-time fan of Runaways and couldn’t be more excited to bring Brian and Adrian’s characters to life,” added Schwartz. Co-showrunner Savage added, “Josh and I can’t wait to get to work for Marvel and Hulu.”

The Plot: Every teenager thinks their parents are evil. What if you found out they actually were? Marvel’s Runaways is the story of six diverse teenagers who can barely stand each other but who must unite against a common foe–their parents.

‘American Honey’ New Trailer with Shia LaBeouf

American Honey Poster

Nearly 40 seconds of the new trailer for A24’s American Honey features a gentle, sincere-sounding female voice-over reading quotes from one review of the film written by a male critic. For some reason it struck me as a weird approach and apparently I’m not alone. Commenters on YouTube also voiced their dislike of the bizarre voice-over. Not as bizarre is the use of Bruce Springsteen’s “Dream Baby Dream” in the promotional video.

Written and directed by Andrea Arnold, the cast of American Honey includes Shia LaBeouf, Riley Keough, and Sasha Lane.

The Plot: “Overflowing with electric, primal energy, American Honey is an immersive, exhilarating odyssey of heartbreaking beauty—a generation-defining movie that celebrates the defiant resilience of young people looking for a place they belong, chasing their own version of the American Dream.”

Max Thieriot Interview on ‘Bates Motel’ Season 5, Rihanna, and Norma’s Death

Bates Motel Season 5 Cast

Unfortunately for fans of A&E’s critically acclaimed dramatic series Bates Motel, season five will be the show’s finale season. Season four left off with the death of Norma Bates (played by Vera Farmiga) and the continuing downward slide of Norman (played by Freddie Highmore), but the audience hasn’t yet learned how Norman’s brother, Dylan (played by Max Thieriot), will react to the devastating news that Norman killed their mother.

At the 2016 San Diego Comic Con, Thieriot discussed this upcoming last season, stepping behind the camera to direct, and what it will be like to say goodbye to his Bates Motel family.

Max Thieriot Interview:

What can you tease about the final season?

Max Thieriot: “To be honest, I don’t have any scripts yet so I don’t even know that much. But the exciting things I think for me are I get to direct episode four and obviously the news that Rihanna is going to be coming and playing Marion Crane. I did know (before it broke at Comic Con), but we’d been sworn to secrecy for a while. So it’s going to be super interesting and exciting to see what she brings to the character, what she brings to the show. Obviously she has such a big fan base but it’s not really about that. I think it’s about the energy that I feel like she’s going to bring, because she just naturally has, to the character.”

Dylan recently moved away from the town. Will his relationship with Norman going to be different?

Max Thieriot: “I mean, I assume and I don’t know, but I assume at some point Dylan has to find out so I think the big question for me is what…and I think that they’ll probably dive into it this season…but I think the big question for me is what that does to Dylan in general, what that does to his relationship with Emma and how that affects their relationship. When he finds out – if he finds out – that Norman killed his mom, how does that affect them? Can he ever forgive him for doing that? I think that Norman and Dylan’s relationship has played on a lot of give and take and this kind of bond is what brings them closer than anything. Even though they have complications and stuff happens to their relationship as brothers, they sort of seem to overcome them a lot of the time. But I think that this is something that is such a massive thing, can Dylan ever forgive Norman for what he’s done to their mom? So I’m super excited and curious to see what the writers do this season and how they decide to sort of play this all out.”

Are you looking forward to directing or are you nervous?

Max Thieriot: “I’m really looking forward to it. I’ve wanted to be a director since I started acting and have always kind of been so inquisitive and just curious about how things worked at a young age. You know, why the director chose to do certain things, why they put the camera in certain places. I’m super excited. I’m really grateful that they’re giving me the opportunity to do it. But it’s also a really great place for me to sort of start because I’m so familiar with the characters and the writing and the show and how the show looks. I already feel at home. I’m just excited at this point.”

Did you ask to direct an episode?

Max Thieriot: “No. Carlton (Cuse) and Kerry (Ehrin) actually asked me in the off season. They said, ‘Hey, would you be interested in directing an episode?’ I was like, ‘I’ve always wanted to direct an episode. That would be amazing.’ They said, ‘All right, we’ll make it work. We’ll make a spot for you for one of the episodes.’ That’s pretty much it.”

When will you see the script for that episode?

Max Thieriot: “I don’t know. I’m dying to get it though because we start in September sometime and I’m ready to get to work now. I want to start breaking it down and figuring out what we’re going to do in the episode.”

How does it feel to say goodbye to this cast?

Max Thieriot: “It’s weird. Honestly, it’s really sad. It’s been such a fun journey. You know, I kind of judge different parts of my life like, ‘Oh, I was filming that movie when I was doing that.’ It’s kind of funny. When you’re an actor for like 14, 15 years now, you sort of categorize things that happened in your life based on what you’re doing at that point in time. But now that this show has become such a huge part of my life and so many things have happened during it, it’s going to feel really weird. It’s going to feel like the end of an era. I think I was already engaged but I got married; I had a kid. There’s so many things that have happened in my own personal life over the course of shooting. And also you just make such great friends with these people because you’re with them for so long. It’s really weird…not to say goodbye forever but it’s like when you’re in high school and you’re going to see the same people when you come back after summer vacation. But then it’s kind of like graduating and leaving and you’re like, ‘Well, we’ll still talk.’ But who knows what will happen down the road. You know, I’m not going to see you guys next season so it’s kind of weird. It’s sad.”

‘Survivor’ Cast Announced for Season 33: Millennials vs Gen X

Survivor is heading into its 33 season and today CBS announced the 20 castaways who will be taking part in the ‘Millennials vs. Gen X’ themed season. Season 33 will once again be hosted by Jeff Probst and will premiere on September 21, 2016 with a 90 minute episode airing from 8-9:30pm ET/PT. Among the castaways who will be competing to outwit, outplay, and outlast each other are a television writer, a professional gamer, a homeless shelter manager, and the show’s youngest player to date.

Per CBS: “Each group of 10 castaways possesses similar characteristics that represent their generation and help unify their tribe. Millennials, the largest living generational group and most diverse in U.S. history (source: PewResearch.org and U.S. Census Bureau), grew up in a time of rapid change and are often described as having priorities that are vastly different from previous generations. How will this group fare without technology on the island? Will they opt for shortcuts in challenges or go the distance? Generation X forms the bridge between the Baby Boomers and the Millennials and has been collectively labeled as hard-working and independent people. Will they be able to find some commonalities with the younger castaways or stick to their own group? Will their differences and preconceived beliefs be too much to overcome?”

Michael Malarkey Interview: ‘The Vampire Diaries’ Season 8

Vampire Diaries star Michael Malarkey

The CW’s The Vampire Diaries is definitely coming to an end with season eight and the 2016 San Diego Comic Con was the cast’s farewell to the fan convention where the show’s panel and Q&A with fans has always been a popular draw. Among The Vampire Diaries cast members who took part in this year’s Comic Con was Michael Malarkey who is going into his fourth season of playing Enzo. During our roundtable interview, Malarkey talked about what we can expect from Enzo this season, the Enzo/Bonnie relationship, and how he’d like to see Enzo’s storyline wrap up.

Michael Malarkey Interview:

This is going to be a very different Enzo that we see this season, isn’t it?

Michael Malarkey: “Yes. How we left off last season was Damon and Enzo going on this killing rampage. We will find out why and what they’re driven by and it’s something to do with this new supreme evil that has been lurking in the vault, that has escaped the vault. Enzo, however, is kind of grappling with this a bit more, he’s fighting it a bit more than Damon and how we start the season is seeing the whole relationship with Damon and Enzo and this creature, you can call it.”

This creature, are we going to actually see it?

Michael Malarkey: “Yes. I’m not sure what I’m allowed to say on that matter or not. But it is a ‘being’ of some sort. Yeah. I think I’m allowed to say it.”

Does this feel like a good place for the story to wrap up in your mind or are you disappointed it’s not going to keep going for many more seasons?

Michael Malarkey: “I think it feels like a good place. Where do you stop otherwise? It can become just another cop show where you have an episodic kind of thing, like a Scooby-Doo type of thing. I feel like the great thing about this, about doing a somewhat shorter season and having an end point in sight, is that they can really own the focus, drive it towards the end, as opposed to, ‘What can we throw in now to keep everything occupied?’

22 episodes is a long ass time to be able to fill. I’m super excited about that. I feel like it is a good place. All the characters are kind of finding their footing in a way. Well, in a way I suppose, and we’ll find out how that all kind of happens at the end, whatever Julie (Plec’s) vision is for closure which I’m super excited to find out about myself.”

Damon and Enzo won’t be completely out on their own, will they? You will get to act with the rest of the cast sometimes, won’t you?

Michael Malarkey: “Oh, we’ll have to. The beauty of this season is everything’s focused on the group. The group is looking for Damon and Enzo so everybody is together, whereas I think in seasons past there’s been a lot of different things going on, missions with just Enzo and Sarah Salvatore and then Damon and Elena, Stefan and his thing, and Klaus and all that. So this is everybody is together. All the storylines are kind of working in the same direction in a way.”

What’s happening with the Enzo and Bonnie storyline?

Michael Malarkey: “Well, you’re going to get a whole lot more of that. There’s some more Enzo/Bonnie stuff coming up as well which, by the way, was a joy to shoot. Kat (Graham) and I had a blast doing that. That was a really great part of last season. But obviously it’s kind of on a bit of a hiatus based upon the situation at hand with Enzo being locked up by this force and then being away.”

How do you think playing Enzo has changed you, if it has?

Michael Malarkey: “I think living on the edge, living in the moment, really pursuing what I want to pursue relentlessly. Kind of doing it a bit more fearlessly than I did before. I feel like he’s made me a bit more like that. I feel like all the characters I’ve played I’m influenced by and I still carry with me to this day. I played Elvis for a year; there’s a part of me that’s always retained that kind of thing. You can’t help it. You become somebody. It’s like living a second life legally.”

What ending do you want for Enzo?

Michael Malarkey: “A happy ending. A nice, happy ending. I mean, since I’ve been living with him and experiencing his wants as well, I want for him to be happy. I want for him to end up with Bonnie and be content and not have any of this other crap to have to deal with, because that’s what he wants. I want what my character wants.”

Will that be possible given the dark turn he’s taking this season? Can he redeem himself and have a happy ending?

Michael Malarkey: “Well, that will be whole season for you to enjoy that whole trajectory. I think that will be a lot of what this season’s about for Enzo, each episode finding that out. I don’t know yet but I’m assuming so. But that storyline is definitely still strong – Bonnie and Enzo. We’re going to be exploring that.”

Is there anything you hope Enzo gets to do this season that he hasn’t been able to do in past seasons?

Michael Malarkey: “I want him to ride a horse. That would be another ending! Maybe something happens and Bonnie and him don’t end up together. He can ride a horse off into the sunset.”

Is it going to be sad saying goodbye to the rest of this cast?

Michael Malarkey: “Hell yes. I love all of these people. It’s become my family for the past few of years. I was saying earlier that it’s rare for some shows to even go as long as three seasons, and I’ve been doing this going into my fourth season on the show which is nice. However, when you have those close bonds you’ll still keep in touch. I reckon from this point on when I’m in LA I’ll hit up Paul or Matt or Ian or Zach. ‘What are you guys doing? Let’s grab some lunch.’ It’s that close. It’s like family. It’s corny but it’s true.”

‘True Blood’s Anna Paquin Joins ‘Alias Grace’

True Blood star Anna Paquin is set to star in the Netflix series Alias Grace, based on Margaret Atwood’s novel. Paquin will join Zachary Levi and Sarah Gadon in the miniseries written and executive produced by Sarah Polley. American Psycho‘s Mary Harron is directing the six-hour miniseries which began shooting on August 15, 2016.

“Anna is an incredibly versatile performer who always makes complex, unpredictable, and fascinating choices in her work,” stated Sarah Polley. “It’s always a marvel to watch her and we’re thrilled to have her join the cast.”

Alias Grace is a Netflix, CBC, and Halfire Entertainment production. Director Harron and Noreen Halpern are executive producing, with D.J. Carson producing.

The Plot: Alias Grace follows Grace Marks (Sarah Gadon) a poor, young Irish immigrant and domestic servant in Upper Canada who, along with stable hand James McDermott, was convicted of the brutal murders of their employer, Thomas Kinnear and Nancy Montgomery (Anna Paquin) in 1843. Nancy is Kinnear’s housekeeper and lover, and while she initially befriends Grace, she begins to resent Grace and becomes increasingly jealous of Kinnear’s affection for her. Nancy eventually fires Grace in a fit of rage and is later found brutally murdered.

Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper Set for ‘A Star is Born’

Warner Bros Pictures confirmed Lady Gaga will star in the remake of A Star is Born opposite Bradley Cooper. Lady Gaga recently earned a Golden Globe award for her performance in the FX horror anthology series American Horror Story, adding that honor to a trophy case that includes six Grammy Awards. In addition, she also was nominated for an Academy Award for her song “Til It Happens to You” from the documentary The Hunting Ground.

Cooper has earned three Academy Award acting nominations for his work in American Sniper, American Hustle, and Silver Linings Playbook.

The A Star is Born remake has been in the works for years and is finally moving forward with the confirmation of the two leads, Lady Gaga and Cooper. Cooper will also be stepping behind the camera to make his directorial debut with the project. Lady Gaga, of course, will sing in the film and is writing new songs for romantic drama. Cooper, Todd Phillips, Jon Peters, and Billy Gerber are producing, with Basil Iwanyk on board as an executive producer.

“For those of us lucky enough to watch him work as an actor and producer, it has been clear that Bradley would make this transition to director,” said Greg Silverman, President, Creative Development and Worldwide Production, Warner Bros. Pictures. “We are honored that he is doing it, here, at his home—Warner Bros.—and with Lady Gaga as a collaborator and co-star. The world is in for a treat as these great artists craft an all-new vision of A Star is Born.”

The original A Star is Born was released in 1937 and starred Janet Gaynor and Fredric March. In 1954 Judy Garland and James Mason took on starring roles in a version that was nominated for six Academy Awards. A Star is Born was remade yet again in 1976 starring Barbra Streisand and Kris Kristofferson. That remake earned four Oscar nominations, winning in the Original Song category for “Evergreen.”

Seth Gabel and Brannon Braga Interview: ‘Salem’ Season 3

Salem star Seth Gabel

WGN America’s Salem will premiere its third season during Halloween week, kicking off a season in which the witches will be battling their biggest foe to date – the Devil himself. During the 2016 San Diego Comic-Con, Seth Gabel (‘Cotton Mather’) joined Salem co-creator Brannon Braga to discuss the upcoming season and what viewers of the addictive series can expect when it returns this fall. While taking part in roundtable interviews, Braga and Gabel provided a few details on season three without giving away any spoilers. But what they did have to say about this new season should make fans of the series anxious for Halloween week to arrive.

Seth Gabel and Brannon Braga Interview:

What’s in store for season three?

Brannon Braga: “It’s a new chapter in Salem. The Devil has broken all of his promises to the witches. It will not be a world of freedom and freedom from hypocrisy and oppression. It will be a world where he will take revenge upon God by destroying humanity. So he lied and they’ve made a terrible mistake. The only person who can stop the Devil is the person who gave birth to him and that’s Mary Sibley, and she’s dead. That’s how the season begins.”

Are there going to be any unusual alliances between your character and another character that we aren’t expecting?

Seth Gabel: “Well right now I’m under the control of my wife, Anne Hale, who’s a witch and taking advantage of me. So you’ll see Cotton, in order to figure out how to get out that situation of being under someone else’s control, he has to do and become a lot of things that he wouldn’t ordinarily do. He tries to do honest things ever since he decided not to be such a jerk like he was in the pilot. But, he starts to realize that sometimes to do good you have to do a little bad. I think a lot of the characters on the show realize that. But then where does the line end? As you say (indicating Brannon Braga), the road to hell is paved with good intentions. I know you coined that phrase. I think a lot of the characters experience that this year.”

Is it a more physically demanding season for you?

Seth Gabel: (Laughing) “It’s always physically demanding. Having a rat stuffed inside of you, yeah, it’s intense. Physically intense.”

Brannon Braga: “And vomiting out the rat.”

Seth Gabel: “Well, if that happens…”

Emotionally more intense too, at the same time?

Seth Gabel: “Yeah, because Cotton and Anne, despite their conflict they do love each other. There is some kind of semblance of innocence that exists between them, and they’re trying to rescue that and salvage that but the world is so distorted around them, it’s difficult for them to get on the same page.”

Cotton seems to cry a lot. Can you cry on cue?

Seth Gabel: (Laughing) “I can’t give up my secrets. I use a lot of menthol.”

Brannon Braga: “The weird part is he cries when he’s not on camera too.”

Seth Gabel: “Yeah, I’m just crying all the time. They’re just like, ‘Get the camera on him!'”

Did you know from season one that season three would be set in hell? Was that the arc you had in mind the whole time?

Brannon Braga: “We always knew we wanted to go to hell, literally. We wanted to go to hell and we wanted to see what it’s like down there. We get there this year, so yeah from very early in the show we had a sense of where it was going to build up to this point.”

Are there any characters we can expect to be entering into the mix that we should be looking out for as major players?

Brannon Braga: “Well, there’s a new character that’s called The Sentinel and The Sentinel is one of the Devil’s brothers, his right-hand man. He’s summoned to help him in his plans. That character is a new kind of villainous scary character. I can just hint that the Countess Marburg (played by Lucy Lawless) will play an unexpected role – a central part this season – but in a most unusual way. And, there are others. Marilyn Manson plays a character. He plays the barber-surgeon in town. Back in those days the guy who cut your hair and gave you a shave took out your spleen. And so he’s a comic relief character but there’s also a little Sweeney Todd in there. He plays a pretty big role.”

Seth Gabel: “He does a really great job.”

But no singing.

Seth Gabel: “Just the theme song.”

This next season sounds like it’ll be darker than the previous two. How do you determine when you’ve taken it too far and might have pushed the limit with the audience?

Brannon Braga: “I’m not sure it’s going to be darker. I’m not sure how much darker this show can get. In fact with Cotton’s central storyline it’s actually in some ways lighter. There’s actually more humor this year. We actually put a little more humor into the show this year. But, you know, we just try to be honest with the story. We try not to do anything gratuitous just to do it. As long as it’s authentic to the stories and characters. But there are times when we don’t know if we’re going to cross the line. ‘Can we show this?’ That’s when the show works best. Like in the pilot episode there was a nipple showing but it’s on her thigh. ‘Is that allowed?’ ‘Not sure.’ ‘Let’s do it!’ That was the one moment in the pilot that freaked people out.”

Do you ever get the creeps while shooting? Does it ever scare you just being on the set?

Seth Gabel: “Actually, it doesn’t. It’s interesting. When you’re on set and you know that the blood is corn syrup and food coloring, I really try to between takes just remind myself of that. ‘This is all pretend.’ When you’re working it’s kind of funny because you’re stabbing and then it’s like, ‘Cut!’ and it’s, ‘Hey, how’s it going?’ It’s kind of easy to get over it.”

Brannon Braga: “There have been times filming when I got freaked out. One of those times was when Elise Eberle was in that cage dog walking thing and screaming. Everyone was freaked out because nobody knew that’s what she was going to do. And there was a goat who was really freaked out.”

Seth Gabel: “That was a scene that did affect me. The goat was a little startled after that because I would have to protect Elise from the goat because it thought she was some kind of monster. It was fight or flight for the goat and it chose fight. And unfortunately her mark was within the realm of where the goat could reach. So she’s screaming and pointing her finger, and the goat is wanting to butt her. So I’m having to hold her down and try to lightly press the goat with my foot away from her.”

Teamed up at Comic Con to talk about season two of The CW’s Legends of Tomorrow, Arthur Darvill (Rip Hunter) and Maisie Richardson-Sellers (Amaya Jiwe/Vixen) said we can expect a bigger show with an expanded universe. Season two of the comic book-inspired series will find members of the Justice Society of America and the Legion of Doom showing up to shake things up on DC’s Legends of Tomorrow season two. Legion of Doom members showing up to wreak havoc are the Reverse-Flash played by Matt Letscher, Wentworth Miller as Captain Cold, John Barrowman as Malcolm Merlyn, and Neal McDonough as Damien Darkh. And among the JSA who will be part of season two are Hourman, Stargirl, Obsidian and Dr. Mid-Nite.

The season two plot: “After the defeat of the immortal villain Vandal Savage and the corrupt Time Masters who colluded with him, a new threat emerges. Dr. Nate Heywood (Nick Zano), an unconventional and charming historian, is thrust into the action upon making a shocking discovery – the Legends are scattered throughout time. Nate must find a way to rescue season one’s beloved team of heroes and rogues, including billionaire inventor Ray Palmer (Brandon Routh), who has created an exo-suit with the power to shrink him to miniscule size, as the Atom; Sara Lance (Caity Lotz), the White Canary, a trained assassin; Professor Martin Stein (Victor Garber) and Jefferson “Jax” Jackson (Franz Drameh), who together form the meta-human Firestorm; and Mick Rory (Dominic Purcell), aka Heat Wave, a career criminal. When the Legends encounter the J.S.A (the Justice Society of America, the precursor to DC’s Justice League) in the 1940s, Amaya Jiwe (Maisie Richardson-Sellers), aka Vixen, joins the team. While the team reunites, a mystery looms – the fate of former captain Rip Hunter (Arthur Darvill).

Once reunited, the Legends continue their new mission to protect the timeline from temporal aberrations – unusual changes to history that spawn potentially catastrophic consequences. When Nate, the grandson of J.S.A. member Commander Steel, unexpectedly finds himself with powers, he must overcome his own insecurities and find the hero within himself. Ultimately, the Legends will clash with foes both past and present, to save the world from a mysterious new threat.”

Legends of Tomorrow will kick off season two on The CW on Thursday, October 13th at 8pm ET/PT.

Arthur Darvill and Maisie Richardson-Sellers Interview:

Will Rip find out about Barry Allen’s time travel and have a conversation with him about that?

Arthur Darvill: “I hope so. I’m desperate to work with Grant (Gustin). We’ve been hanging out a bit and he’s so good. I think it would be great to explore that. I have no idea if that’s happening. Yeah, it’s happening. I’m lying.”

Have you started your Vancouver band yet?

Arthur Darvill: “No, we haven’t. It’s just me solo at the moment. There’s so many people who play music up there. We always have these grand ideas of spending our weekends writing a hit album. We end up just sleeping.”

Last season Rip wasn’t the best of captains…

Arthur Darvill: “What do you mean?”

He lied, he deceived, and led them into a couple of time messes. How is he going to improve this season?

Arthur Darvill: “He’s such a funny character. He thinks he’s so great at what he does. He thinks that his intentions are the best intentions. I think he’s had a bit of time to reflect when we meet him, but I think what he went through last season has definitely damaged him. He’s got a real internal sadness, no matter what’s happening. He’s lost so much and failed so hard. It’s something that he’ll never be able to get back. He’s lost part of himself. But, also, I’ve been promised that we get to see more of his lighter side as well. I’m excited to see that. When we meet him he’s like a kind of exasperated parent whose kids won’t stop coloring on the walls. But then early on there’s a big twist, quite super early on in the (season) which changes absolutely everything for him. It’s exciting – and a secret.”

Now that Rip has come to terms with not saving his family, what is his driving force?

Arthur Darvill: “They’ve also destroyed the Time Masters, so he feels a responsibility to keep time ticking as it were. Very soon we find that there is someone who is trying to stop him from doing that. We meet quite a big foe quite early on and very quickly takes their attention.”

How will the Justice Society of America interact with the Legends of Tomorrow gang?

Maisie Richardson-Sellers: “I think when we first meet her and the Justice Society of America there’s a lot of clashing because it’s two massive superhero groups and a lot of egos. But it’s a whole journey and I hope that we can figure it out.”

Arthur Darvill: “We’ll eventually be able to stop fighting.”

Maisie Richardson-Sellers: “Yeah, there’s a lot of awesome fight stuff coming up and a lot of great time travel locations and periods. The show is getting bigger.”

Will Patrick J. Adams’ character Rex Tyler/Hourman challenge Rip’s authority or leadership?

Arthur Darvill: “I haven’t read it yet, so I don’t know. I think so. What’s so great about introducing all of these new characters is that there are so many egos flying around. They’ve all got a similar aim – to keep everyone safe and happy…”

Maisie Richardson-Sellers: “A lot of cooks stirring the pot.”

Arthur Darvill: “A lot of cooks stirring the pot and I think that very quickly makes some quite tense situations with people. It’s great because in my life I’m so afraid of confrontation that I can just live it out at work by having arguments with everyone – pretend arguments.”

How do you think Rip would take to having Rory run the ship?

Arthur Darvill: “I don’t think he’d be ready for that. He’d be like, ‘Jesus Christ! This guy’s not very good at being brave, is he?’ I don’t think Rory would deal very well with it. I don’t know… He steps up occasionally.”
