Exclusive Interview: Anthony Hemingway on ‘The People v. O.J. Simpson’ and ‘Underground’

Anthony Hemingway was on two panels for the Television Critics Association on two different days. He directed the pilot to the WGN America series Underground, about the Underground Railroad, and episodes of the FX drama The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story.

The pilot to Underground opens musically, with a rhythmic score and even the Kanye West song “Black Skinhead.” As you’ve seen, The People v. O.J. Simpson captures the media circus surrounding the trial. I got to speak with Hemingway about his two new shows at a reception for the Television Critics Association. Underground premieres March 9, 2016 on WGN America. The People v. O.J. Simpson airs Tuesdays at 10pm ET/PT on FX.

Anthony Hemingway Interview:

You’ve directed two historical series. Could they be any more different?

Anthony Hemingway: “Apples and oranges, but I think there’s a common denominator between the two of them which really kind of speaks to the common feeling is definitely what I believe is really examining how far we’ve come as a whole in this country, and how much farther we have to go. They’re totally two different things but I think somewhere in the ether connect. I think they’re both a part of the same family.”

Does Underground have any fictional characters in it?

Anthony Hemingway: “Yes, it does.”

And even the historical figures in Underground, we don’t have video of them so do you have a little more license to portray them?

Anthony Hemingway: “Yeah, it’s all definitely pulled from history. They’re characters that I did not know about, that I learned about. So that was very interesting. I love learning. I love just discovery but they both were, I think, two pieces of material that wanted to be approached from the left and not literally, or as anyone expected. I love unexpected things. I love thinking out of the box and I think both of them have done well in that arena.”

How did you create the atmosphere of the circus that the O.J. trial was?

Anthony Hemingway: “It was challenging but I think a lot of it came from just the research that we saw. So many of these guys, just because of the nature of what happened, it was like reality TV before reality TV. They became celebrities and it became this whole circus. Just realizing and understanding also more that I know in terms of the media from working on The Newsroom and The Wire, just really understanding things and realizing the angles and agendas and manipulation that can come in it is fascinating to me.”


Does Underground have a musical quality, in some part because of John Legend and because of the Kanye West song you use?

Anthony Hemingway: “Yes, it does have a musical quality. That was inseminated from the conception of the creation, from Misha [Green] and Joe [Pokaski], and it was such an energetic pulse that defined the old antebellum, antiquated thinking that we’ve seen over and over and over again. […] Because it was really kind of a lens into a slice of life that we really haven’t seen, we haven’t seen the celebration or have given them humanity before, in doing that we wanted to create our own language and music was definitely a device that was used. One also to connect with a younger audience who really don’t have any idea what the Underground Railroad history is. Also too it’s just a way to give it a veneer and a palette that is entertaining and inviting, to come in and be immersed into this world that you have no idea about.”

Directing the courtroom episodes of People v. O.J. Simpson, did you study the broadcasts and footage of the trial?

Anthony Hemingway: “Yes, a lot. Just even in framing, just in terms of there are moments that were so memorable. Just even homaging that, there was so much detail into it and the attention to detail just in terms of where the cameras were placed and all that kind of stuff. Thankfully we had even Jeff Toobin to really affirm those things for us.”

Did you direct the glove episode?

Anthony Hemingway: “I did.”

So did you have to be very exact with how we all saw O.J. fidgeting with that glove?

Anthony Hemingway: “There were moments, everything from him putting on the latex before it to even Chris Darden, who was played by Sterling Brown, how when he even picked it up to go take it to him, from even when Shapiro went to look at it and touching it with or without latex, from picking it up with the pen, there was so much stuff. We looked at a lot of footage to really make sure we were as accurate as we could [be]. There were so many layers to it.”

Does your career as a director spiral from once you do one show, they hire you for another one and people hear about you? Does work beget work?

Anthony Hemingway: “Yeah, at a certain point you really craft your brand. I think it’s important for me, my directing career started off on The Wire. From there, the bar was high. So it was like. ‘Where do I go from here?’ I just wanted to make sure the quality of the material I was doing was on par with that and aligned with that. It’s definitely challenging because there are things that even you enjoy to watch and you want to do, they may not necessarily be the right decision for your career. But you give and take.”

Do you still have to pitch for work?

Anthony Hemingway: “Yes, yes. Many people who you wouldn’t think have to, do. It’s funny, it’s incredible when you think about it and you look at someone’s history and the steps that they still have to go through. It’s pretty fascinating.”

Did you have to pitch for O.J. or Underground?

Anthony Hemingway: “No, for Underground I had to go meet on it. I had to go and show them why I was the best person for the job. With any of it, you have to meet on it and interview. Some are easier than others. For instance, I did the pilot to Power. The creator of that show wanted me so when I finally got around to meeting, it was an easy go.”

Bryan Fuller’s Excited to Return to ‘Star Trek’

Bryan Fuller (Hannibal) began his career writing for Star Trek: Voyager and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, and CBS just announced he’s returning to the Star Trek world with the new sci-fi series coming in 2017. Fuller is the new series’ showrunner and co-creator, and will executive produce along with Alex Kurtzman and Heather Kadin.


Per the network, the new Star Trek will launch with a “special preview broadcast” in 2017. The series is the first developed for CBS All Access and all subsequent episodes will be available exclusively on the digital subscription video on demand and live streaming service.

“My very first experience of Star Trek is my oldest brother turning off all the lights in the house and flying his model of a D7 Class Klingon Battle Cruiser through the darkened halls. Before seeing a frame of the television series, the Star Trek universe lit my imagination on fire,” said Fuller. “It is without exaggeration a dream come true to be crafting a brand new iteration of Star Trek with fellow franchise alum Alex Kurtzman and boldly going where no Star Trek series has gone before.”

“Bringing Star Trek back to television means returning it to its roots, and for years those roots flourished under Bryan’s devoted care,” said executive producer Alex Kurtzman. “His encyclopedic knowledge of Trek canon is surpassed only by his love for Gene Roddenberry’s optimistic future, a vision that continues to guide us as we explore strange new worlds.”

Taylor Swift leads the pack of 2016 iHeartRadio Music Awards with eight nominations including Female Artist of the Year. Swift’s followed by The Weeknd with seven nominations, and Adele, Drake, Justin Bieber, Ed Sheeran, Luke Bryan and Sam Smith all picked up multiple 2016 iHeartRadio Music Awards nominations. This year’s awards show will air live on TBS, TNT, and truTV on Sunday, April 3 at 8pm ET/5pm PT.

The 2016 awards includes nominees in 31 categories, with Best Tour, Best Duo/Group of the Year, and Latin Song of the Year among the new categories added to the list this year. “Because the iHeartRadio Music Awards are a celebration of all things music, it’s extremely fitting that we expand the categories this year to recognize even more of today’s biggest artists across every genre,” said Tom Poleman, President of iHeartMedia’s National Programming Group. “It’s going to be an unforgettable night and a true representation of the country’s favorite artists and music.”

‘And Then There Were None’ with Douglas Booth Premiere Date Announced

Lifetime’s set to air the two-part miniseries And Then There Were None on Sunday, March 13, 2016 and Monday, March 14. The miniseries based on Agatha Christie’s bestselling novel aired on BBC One in December 2015, pulling in 9.5 million on its first night. Craig Viveiros (Ghosted) directed and Sarah Phelps (The Casual Vacancy, Great Expectations) adapted Christie’s book for the miniseries. Phelps, Mathew Prichard, Hilary Strong, Karen Thrussell, Damien Timmer, and Matthew Read executive produce.

The cast includes Douglas Booth (Great Expectations), Charles Dance (Game of Thrones), Maeve Dermody, Burn Gorman, Anna Maxwell Martin, Sam Neill, Miranda Richardson, Black SailsToby Stephens, Noah Taylor, and Aidan Turner.

The Plot:

Set in 1939 while Europe teeters on the brink of war, And Then There Were None follows ten strangers with dubious pasts who are lured to Soldier Island, an isolated rock near the Devon coast in southern England. Cut off from the mainland, with their hosts mysteriously absent, they are each accused of a terrible crime, and when members of the party start to mysteriously die, they all realize they may be harboring a murderer among their number. Who will survive? And who is the killer?

‘Mozart in the Jungle’ Earns a Third Season Renewal

Mozart in the Jungle will be returning for a third season as just announced by Amazon. The series, which recently picked up two Golden Globes, will start shooting season three later this year. Mozart in the Jungle stars Golden Globe winner Gael Garcia Bernal, Lola Kirke, Saffron Burrows, Malcolm McDowell, Bernadette Peters, Hannah Dunne, and Jason Schwartzman. Schwartzman, Roman Coppola, and Paul Weitz executive produce.


Mozart in the Jungle bursts with creativity and passion, and offers audiences something truly unique,” stated Joe Lewis, Head of Half Hour Series, Amazon Studios. “Amazon is proud to have two of the most risky and enthralling comedy series on television today.”

The half hour comedy/drama is based on Blair Tindall’s memoir, Mozart in the Jungle: Sex, Drugs & Classical Music.

In response to the show’s renewal, Schwartzman said, “We’re grateful to Amazon for endowing our orchestra with another season. We can’t wait to follow our characters through the vast world of music, whether performing on a subway platform or in the grand concert halls of Europe.”

What happens behind the curtains at the symphony is just as captivating as what happens on stage. Created by Paul Weitz (About a Boy), Roman Coppola (The Darjeeling Limited), and Jason Schwartzman (Rushmore). Man Seeking Woman really spoke to me in the first season. We’ve all felt like our ex was dating Hitler and we were being set up with trolls, but Simon Rich’s TV comedy literally depicted those feelings. Now in season two he goes even further with Liz (Britt Lower) having an affair with Santa Claus and Josh (Jay Baruchel) negotiating bro time with Mike (Eric Andre).

I had a one on one with Man Seeking Woman creator Simon Rich before his show’s panel for the Television Critics Association. He updated me on the new additions to season two’s staff and what that means for the surreal, absurd antics of Josh and his friends. Man Seeking Woman airs Wednesdays at 10:30pm ET/PT on FXX.

Simon Rich Interview:

Are you still dealing with material from your books?

Simon Rich: “No, we’re all out. We are 100% out so everything this season is completely original.”


Had you thought about writing more books or is it all in the show now?

Simon Rich: “I have written another book. It’s called Spoiled Brats which came out about a year ago, similar in tone, more magical realist/absurdist stories but they’re not about dating. They’re more about growing up and turning 30.”

Simon Rich: “Maybe. I think in terms of dating stories, all of my love-based writing is now squarely focused on the show.”

Do writers come to you with stuff that blows your mind?

Simon Rich: “All the time. It’s an incredible writing staff. It’s the same writing staff as last year. Ian Maxtone-Graham from The Simpsons. Robert Padnick from The Office. Sofia Alvarez, a great New York City playwright. Dan Mirk from The Onion but we also added a huge crucial ingredient which is Merika Sawyer who is one of our producers and writers this year. She is my old writing partner at Saturday Night Live and we have her this season. It’s just a huge jolt of talent into the staff.”

Does hearing their stories make you glad you’re not dating anymore?

Simon Rich: “Yeah, there are some horror stories in the writers room. It’s a very autobiographical show, not just for me and the writers but for the cast itself. They’re part of the creative process. Jay was in the writers room this year for a good stretch and really helped us generate stories and flesh out the characters.”

Not-Joshero-sexual hit really close to home for me.

Simon Rich: “Yeah, that’s an episode about how sometimes when somebody’s not attracted to you, you literally cannot do anything. You can’t change it. Sometimes you just have to move past it and face the music.”

Your voice-over of the Blade trilogy killed me.

Simon Rich: “Thank you so much. That was Ian and I writing on a legal pad on set, voiced by our script supervisor. This amazing guy named R. Emerson John. So a non-professional actor nailed that part.”

Was there never any talk of having the actual Blade movies?

Simon Rich: “We always like to have a little bit of fun with fake movie dialogue. It’s one of our favorite things to do. We have some fake Carnivale dialogue in season one. There’s more fake movie dialogue to come this season.”

Which movies?

Simon Rich:Must Love Dogs.”

Can we assume they’re talking about how someone has to like dogs?

Simon Rich: “It’s pretty on the nose, yeah, exactly.”

Is this season somehow even more surreal than the first?

Simon Rich: “I would say it’s equally surreal. The first season, we were really focused on just establishing the rules of the show, establishing the world and its surreal point of view. This year, now that we’ve built the world, introduced it, we’re mainly focused on character development and trying to flesh out our protagonists and their relationships with one another, and also to put those relationships to the test. So I think it’s more dramatically propulsive, more narratively driven but equally nuts.”

Are we far past texting and settling for trolls? Falling for a coworker is a lot more complicated.

Simon Rich: “It’s a lot more complicated and it only gets more complicated as Josh and Mike enter into this love triangle which dominates the second half of this season. It becomes this highly serialized show with cliffhangers. So the show has, I would say, a little bit more narrative energy. The other thing is thematically, season one was very much about getting over heartbreak for Josh, and then ultimately for Liz as well. This season is really about unrequited love. It’s more active. It’s future tense instead of past tense. All of our protagonists are going after a love object they probably shouldn’t be. It has more narrative tension.”

Do the guest stars get the tone easily, that they have to play it for real?

Simon Rich: “You know, 90% of them do. They really get it. Robin Givens in particular, when she showed up to play Mrs. Claus, instantaneously understood exactly what was required. She played it completely straight, completely naturalistically and was amazing. I’ve been really excited by the commitment that actors have brought to this show, especially our protagonists.”

Not even celebrity guest stars, but the day players who played the couple at the Not-Joshero-sexual parade.

Simon Rich: “They were great. They were excellent. They got it. Callum Keith Rennie plays a ton of hard-boiled detective types and he plays one on our show. It’s the cold open scene where Josh is going to drunk text a girl in the middle of the night. We play it as if he’s a maniac with a bomb about to detonate it. We shoot it anamorphically and it’s a full cop drama. We hired the best cop playing actors we could find and they played it completely straight. It looks like a completely different show. It’s shot like a cop drama. We’ve got the sirens and the anamorphic lens. The only thing that’s weird about it is instead of it being a bomb, it’s a cell phone.”

Was Fred Armisen your first choice for Jesus?

Simon Rich: “Yeah, we’ve been trying to get him on the show forever. We were so lucky to have Bill Hader last year playing Hitler. We always wanted to get Fred in there too and he nailed it. I love him in that episode. It was so fun to watch him out there.”

So Maggie’s not still clinging to Josh?

Simon Rich: “No, Maggie definitely moved on from Josh for sure. I think in season one, Josh moved on from her eventually. It took him a whole year but Josh didn’t learn a whole lot in his first season but he did learn that that relationship was wrong and that he shouldn’t cling to it anymore. This year he’ll learn even harsher lessons.”

Was it always the plan for Maya Erskine to leave after one seasons?

Simon Rich: “We always knew it would be for one season and that would be Josh’s arc that he would get over her and she would move past her as well. It was hard losing Maya because she was so talented and excellent on our show. She’s phenomenal and really a hugely important part of the first season, just extremely funny and talented. Sometimes story-wise you need to write a character out even when the actress is fantastic, which is a drag. Who knows? Josh’s life is long and weird. Who knows what kind of women will reappear into his life.”

Was it fun to make Josh the villain of the season premiere?

Simon Rich: “So fun. Really, really fun. It’s great to see him from another perspective. Ultimately we’ll see Eric from a different perspective too, not to give too much away. I think people will be surprised by how much range Eric Andre has as a dramatic actor. We learn this season that a lot of his bro-y facade is just for show and that when it comes to love, he has just as much vulnerability as anybody else.”

There are so many different genres in that episode. Was that very ambitious?

Simon Rich: “The axe murderer one? Yeah, because we go from a war movie trope to an underdog union story to a slasher movie to a Lifetime original movie all in 20 minutes. It is a weird show that we combine science-fiction, horror, Greco-Roman mythology sometimes all within 10 minutes. Writing an episode is sort of like building a tower out of differently shaped blocks.”

Sarah Gadon also got the tonal shifts.

Simon Rich: “Nailed it. Her monologue explaining the mythology of her and her friends, she just nailed it, just completely straight and deadpan. Really, really gifted actress. I’m telling you, most of the people we bring on, they get it 100%. I think if they didn’t understand the conceit, they probably wouldn’t take the gig. Everyone really gets it and has been really bold.”

Aren’t we also in a world with a lot more surrealism and absurdity, it’s not as hard a sell as it might’ve been even 10 years ago?

Simon Rich: “I think that’s definitely true, absolutely. I think that people have watched 150 episodes of The Simpsons.”

There’s actually over 550 episodes of The Simpsons.

Simon Rich: “I know but everyone’s watched at least 150, and they’ve watched South Park. They’ve seen surrealism on television for years. I feel really lucky that I get to work on this show, and I’m not convinced it would’ve been possible to make something like this even 10 years ago.”

Or without FX?

Simon Rich: “Or without FX absolutely, and the amount of creative freedom they’ve given us is completely insane.”

Exclusive Interview: Sterling K. Brown on ‘The People v. O.J. Simpson’ and Christopher Darden

Christopher Darden was a lawyer on the prosecution team in the case of The People v. O.J. Simpson. Now that FX is airing an American Crime Story miniseries on the trial, Sterling K. Brown portrays Darden. I got to meet Brown at a reception for the Television Critics Association where he showed me a text message he sent to Darden, to which Darden did not respond.

Brown joins a cast that includes Sarah Paulson as prosecutor Marcia Clark, with John Travolta and Courtney B. Vance as defense attorneys Robert Shapiro and Johnnie Cochran respectively. Cuba Gooding, Jr. plays O.J. Simpson. The People v. O.J. Simpson airs Tuesdays at 10pm ET/PT on FX.

Sterling K. Brown Interview:

Does Christopher Darden begin this trial very idealistic?

Sterling K. Brown: “I believe so. He’s told by his family to be wary. ‘You want to stay away from this. O.J. Simpson is a powerful image, a powerful icon of someone who’s made it to the top in the African-American community. How could that be perceived trying to put him in jail, trying to prosecute him?’ But he believes, from reading his book In Contempt and listening to him interviewed, that if people are able to see the evidence presented to them in a logical way, the way in which it was presented to him, that they would be led to the only logical conclusion as he saw it, was that O.J. Simpson was the perpetrator of a double homicide.”

That’s not necessarily the way his bosses pursued it either, is it?

Sterling K. Brown: “No, I believe they recognized once they had a ‘downtown jury’ that the necessity for a black presence on the prosecution team would be something that was definitely necessary.”

Was there a specific point where he realized this is not due process, this is not a real trial?

Sterling K. Brown: “Sure, and he’ll say himself, the day that he argued the usage of the N-word was very clear to him that this case was no longer going to be about a double homicide, about two people having their lives brutally taken away from them. This was going to be a case about race. I wonder, if he was able to be successful on that front, if the case may have gone in a different direction.”

That’s with Mark Fuhrman?

Sterling K. Brown: “Yes.”

How did you portray that inner frustration of having to do his job anyway?

Sterling K. Brown: “Right, Chris will talk openly that he believes Mark Fuhrman to be a racist, but that does not mean that he believes that he planted evidence. So while he had very little that he wanted to actually do with Mark Fuhrman, he didn’t enjoy being in his presence, there was something about him that he found off-putting from the beginning, but he had to interview him because he was asked to do so by Marcia. Ultimately, he asked Marcia to take that witness on herself. It was so complicated because you can consult with other murderers or rapists and use them as witnesses in your murder trial, so in his mind he’s had to consult with the testimony of this racist in order to get his testimony to convict O.J. Simpson.”

The show really captures what a circus this trial was from the beginning. When did it dawn on Christopher Darden?

Sterling K. Brown: “Oh, man. I think after he argued the N-word and then I believe it was the L.A. Times or a local newspaper had an on-the-beat interview about ‘how do you people respond to Christopher Darden?’ An overwhelming majority of African-America thought that he was a sellout and an Uncle Tom. I believe it broke his heart. For someone who saw himself as trying to be an excellent representative of his community, who loved his people, who worked in the special investigations division so that he could prosecute crooked cops who tried to prey upon his community. To be ostracized and maligned in that way was something that I didn’t think he saw as being conceivable. When you don’t see something coming, that’s the knockout punch.”

Darden doesn’t have quite as many well-known soundbites as a Johnnie Cochran does. Does that give you a little more leeway to deliver his dialogue your way?

Sterling K. Brown: “Maybe. I watched a lot of trial footage and I tried to work on the cadence and the timber of his voice as much as possible. The idea is if people do remember the trial and they can believe me within those scenes, then when I take them behind the scenes, they can go along with that journey much more easily, much more readily. So it wasn’t a matter of soundbites per se. My primary concern was if and when Christopher Darden sees it, can he see himself in the portrayal? That was what I was working with in the back of my mind and I hope the answer is yes.”

Did you reach out to contact Darden?

Sterling K. Brown: “I reached out a couple times. I tried to Facebook friend him once. That was ignored. The second time, I thought he was teaching at Southwestern University as a professor but he wasn’t. He’s in private practice now in Culver City. So I did a Yelp search and I found his number. I was going to just see if it was still active or if he had moved on to other pastures. I called the number at 10:30 at night and it was clear to me when I got the voicemail that it wasn’t a landline. I had reached his cell phone. I had reached Christopher Darden’s cell phone. So I hung up, because it was 10:30 at night, didn’t want to leave a message.

I woke up the next morning and saw 20 minutes later that he had left a text, ‘What’s up? Who’s this?’ Then I wrote him this long text saying who I was and I’ll show it to you. He never responded back. So twice, he’s decided to just not respond but I’m not upset by that because I would not be necessarily very eager to revisit this particular epoch of my life.”

[Brown’s text read: “Mr. Darden, please forgive the late night call. I thought I was contacting a landline in an office to see if the number was still active. My name is Sterling Brown and I’ve been tasked with portraying you in a miniseries on the FX network. Would you be open to having a cup of coffee with me? Any input you’d be willing to share will be greatly appreciated. If you’d rather not, no worries. Thanks.”]

I understand you read Chris’s book. Did you become concerned he had any of the events wrong based on the research you became aware of on the show?

Sterling K. Brown: “If anything, it was absolutely the opposite. I feel like when you’re portraying someone, you are their primary advocate. So it was most important that I was able to get Christopher Darden’s voice out and heard in a way in which he sees himself. So if other people had things that conflicted with how Darden saw things, they’re allowed or entitled to that perspective. I need to speak to Christopher and make sure that his perspective is the one that’s illuminated by me.”

Good news for fans of Frozen: Tony winner Idina Menzel will sing ‘Let It Go’ on ABC’s The Wonderful World of Disney: Disneyland 60. The two-hour celebration is set to air on February 21, 2016 at 8pm ET/PT with Derek Hough as Master of Ceremonies. Menzel, who provided the voice of Elsa in Frozen, will perform ‘Let It Go’ in front of the World of Color backdrop in Disney California Adventure Park.

‘The Magicians’ Earns a Second Season Renewal

Syfy has given The Magicians a second season order after airing just three episodes of season one. The dramatic series based on Lev Grossman’s books has been averaging 1.7 million viewers on Monday nights at 9pm ET/PT, according to the network. Season two will air in 2017 and consist of 13 new episodes.


“Thanks to an extraordinarily gifted creative team of executive producers and our partners at Universal Cable Productions, The Magicians has become a buzzed-about hit, enchanting fans of the novels as well as attracting new and younger audiences to Syfy,” said Dave Howe, President, Syfy & Chiller.

’10 Cloverfield Lane’ Trailer: More Questions Left Unanswered

10 Cloverfield Lane released a new, longer trailer during Super Bowl 50, immediately reigniting the debate over whether this J.J. Abrams Bad Robot production is a Cloverfield sequel. It’s possible…but it’s also possible it exists in the same universe as Cloverfield but isn’t a direct sequel. Directed by Dan Trachtenberg from a script by Josh Campbell, Matt Stuecken & Damien Chazelle, 10 Cloverfield Lane stars Mary Elizabeth Winstead, John Goodman, and John Gallagher Jr.

Paramount Pictures is releasing 10 Cloverfield Lane in theaters and IMAX on March 11, 2016.
