‘Gotham’ Season 2 Episode 9 Recap and Review: A Bitter Pill to Swallow

“You know what I like about those glasses?” asks Jim Gordon (Ben McKenzie) right before he shoots a hired killer in the eye. “They look like bulls-eyes,” says Gordon, answering his own question in season two episode nine of FOX’s gritty comic-book inspired crime series, Gotham.

The episode begins with Tabitha (Jessica Lucas) downtown walking into a bar – I know it sounds like a bad joke – ordering a high smith with no ice which is really code to gain access to a secret doorway that leads to a parlor room complete with gambling tables. Tabitha meets a mystery woman who seems to be in charge and tells her she’s there to order a hit. The mystery woman asks if it is business or personal to which Tabitha asks, “What does it matter?” “Personal costs more, unforeseen complications,” replies the mystery woman, and Tabitha hands over a photo of Jim Gordon.

Gordon returns to the GCPD, after checking in at Gotham General to see if Barbara’s condition had changed. He visits with Lee (Morena Baccarin) who gets a bit upset when he lets her know he was at the hospital checking on Barbara. It’s not so much that she’s jealous of her…well, maybe just a little…but that Jim keeps going towards his dark side and she’s concerned he might cross over into it and she’ll lose him. Jim promises to talk to Lee about what happened with Barbara and his darker thoughts after hours.

Penguin (Robin Lord Taylor) wakes up in bed not sure where he is to find Ed Nygma (Cory Michael Smith) standing over him, smiling. Ed then sedates Oswald, telling him to rest up and that they have a big night ahead. When Penguin wakes again he gets reintroduced to Ed who lets him that even though he might want to leave, he’s a hunted man and with the condition he is in he wouldn’t get more than three blocks.

Ed explains to Penguin that he’s recently gone through some changes and killed three people. Nygma becomes elated after saying it out loud about killing people. Ed is convinced their meeting again is fate and looks to the Penguin to be a guide down this new dark road Ed is going to travel into a world of murder and crime. Oswald, however, is not in the mood for any of this still, grieving over the death of his mother. He sees himself as a failure and tries to leave but passes out on the floor due to his physical state.

At Wayne Manor, Bruce (David Mazouz) has Silver St. Cloud (Natalie Alyn Lind) over to comfort her following her uncle’s arrest and to try to get her to help him find out who killed his parents. (Theo, her uncle, threw a folder that supposedly held the identity of the assassin of Bruce’s parents into the fire as he was being arrested.) Alfred (Sean Pertwee) enters and is surprised to see Silver there, telling her she should leave. She does but not before giving Bruce a hug and a key to the room where she’s staying at a hotel. (Wait…these kids are like 12 or 13 right? What the…?)

Bruce is angry at Alfred for sending Silver away, telling him he had no right but Alfred counters saying he must do what he thinks is best for young master Wayne. He also tells Bruce if he is going to act like a kid in a jail, then Alfred will be his jailer. He forbids Bruce from pursuing anything more on Theo Galavan (James Frain).

Gordon goes to Theo’s apartment to try to find evidence linking him to the mayor’s kidnapping. In the elevator, he’s attacked by a piano repairman using a piano wire as a weapon. This is obviously the hitman sent to kill Jim. They fight and Jim, using his military training, is able to get the upper hand on the assassin and knock him out. He drags the unconscious body into the apartment where Captain Barnes (Michael Chiklis) is waiting for him. Barnes asks, surprised, “Who the hell is this?” “He just tried to kill me,” replies Jim, and then the fake piano repairman’s phone rings. Jim answers it but doesn’t say anything.

On the other end is the mystery woman checking to see if the job is done. By hearing nothing on the other end she knows her man has failed, so she goes out into the parlor to find another killer.

Gordon wakes up the hitman and tries to get him to talk, even half pushing him out the window before Barnes stops the interrogation and pulls Jim aside to talk. Before they can even get a conversation started three more assassins show up, shooting up the place trying to kill Jim. Barnes and Gordon take out the killers but not before they lose another officer in the firefight. Barnes ends up with a serious stab wound in his leg that’s flowing blood.

Gordon ties a tourniquet around Barnes’ leg while telling his Captain that he believes that both Barbara and Lee are right about his dark side and that the “monster” inside him is getting harder to control. Barnes tells Jim all men have a darkness inside them and reveals that during his time in the military he shot a young prisoner in the mouth even though he had already captured the boy. “At the right moment, any man could give into anything. All that separates us from the animals is the law,” says Barnes who’s pretty talkative considering he has been shot and is bleeding out possibly to death.

Back at Ed’s, Penguin wakes to see a man tied up with a bag over his head, crying. Nygma tells Penguin it’s a gift for him and says it’s one of the men who betrayed Penguin and helped murder his mother. He gives Oswald a knife but Penguin drops the knife saying, “I’m done. I need rest and then I’m leaving Gotham forever.” Penguin goes back to bed, humming a song.

A new assassin has now been hired to kill Jim named Eduardo Flamingo and he calls Jim to let him know that he’s already taken care of the police guarding the front of the building and that he’s headed up to take care of Jim, too. (Seriously, one guy against multiple trained policemen? No wonder Gotham needs Batman so badly). Not wanting to get cornered and with Barnes desperately needing medical attention, Jim decides to go down and take on Flamingo outside. After an over-the-top, almost silly fight, Gordon once again gets the upper hand and puts his handgun into Flamingo’s mouth wanting to pull the trigger but he doesn’t. Instead, he reads him his rights and arrests him. Flamingo responds, saying, “Oh man, what a disappointment you are.”

Gotham Cory Michael Smith Season 2 Episode 9

Meanwhile, at Nygma’s place Ed is playing and singing the same song Penguin was humming. Oswald wakes up and wants to know why he’s playing that song. Ed tells him he was humming it. Penguin tells Ed that was the song his mother used to sing to comfort him. Ed offers up a little riddle, saying, “I can bring tears to your eyes and resurrect the dead. I form in an instant and last a lifetime. What am I?” To which Penguin responds, “A memory.”

Ed tells Penguin that though his memories of his mother might bring him pain now, it won’t always be so. He says when he looks at Miss Kringle’s glasses, he now feels gratitude. Ed tells Penguin that even though his mother loved him and he loved her, SHE was HIS weakness and now that she’s gone Penguin is free. “A man with nothing that he loves is a man that cannot be bargained. A man who cannot be betrayed. A man who answers to no one but himself. I see before me a free man,” says Ed. These words ring true to Penguin who accepts Ed’s gift of killing Theo’s stooge who is still tied to the chair and stashed away in Ed’s closet.

Back at Wayne Manor, Bruce tries to sneak out to go see Silver but is blocked by Alfred at every turn, with Alfred even discovering the key Silver gave Bruce as she left a day earlier. Bruce makes one more try to sneak out the window of his father’s study but instead of being able to go out the window, he’s met by Selina (Camren Bicondova) who was hiding behind the curtains. “Going to see your girlfriend?” asks Selina with a hint of jealousy in her voice. (Hiss!) Surprised, Bruce asks Selina why she’s there and she tells him that she’s there to help him and that she has proof that Silver is a snake. Selina then asks Bruce to let her show him, which he looks like he’s about to do.

Gordon is getting patched up by Lee at their place while telling her about what happened and about his dark side. She comforts him and tells him to always tell her the truth no matter what line he may or may not cross. As they embrace, Jim’s phone rings. Lee picks it up and answers, becoming visibly upset. She relays the message that Flamingo just killed the rookie cop Parks while waiting to be processed at GCPD.

The episode ends with Tabitha visiting her brother Theo in jail and with him being furious with her for the first time. It seems he didn’t want a hit squad going after Gordon and tells her she could have jeopardized all their plans. He says that everything is ready for the arrival of the Brothers and that if she does anything to endanger their plan again he will cut her throat, which seems to shake her to her core. The last scene is at the docks with Father Creel meeting the Brothers who kill a security guard who has the bad misfortune of discovering them.

Review of Gotham Season 2 Episode 9:

Overly dramatic and with some of the worst action scenes in the show’s history, season two episode nine titled “A Bitter Pill to Swallow” is the most forgettable episode of this season. The silly plotline with the laughably bad hit squad that makes The Gang That Couldn’t Shoot Straight look like professional killers provides some of the most ludicrous shoot-outs in television history. The fight between Jim and the killer/cannibal Flamingo is poorly choreographed and lacks any real excitement. The episode does feature a terrific fight scene in the elevator between Jim and the first assassin, however, the action in this episode goes downhill from there.

Another weakness in this episode is the absence of Jim’s loyal partner, Bullock (Donal Logue). Unless he was physically in another state there is no way he would sit on the sidelines when word of a hitman trying to kill Jim reached the precinct.

The stand-out performances in this episode were delivered by two of the show’s major villains. Robin Lord Taylor and Cory Michael Smith as Penguin and Riddler, respectively, steal the episode as the two classic, eventual crime kings of Gotham become partners in crime – or rather mentor and student. Smith delivers yet another wonderful performance as Nygma who has embraced his need for killing and bloodshed. Taylor captures real sorrow and sadness as Penguin mourns his dead mother as well as the loss of his crime empire. Hopefully, the pair will join forces to make life extremely busy and difficult for Gordon and the rest of the GCPD.

With only one more episode before the winter break, here’s hoping Selina can open Bruce’s eyes to what snakes Silver and her uncle are and that Gordon and Bullock can put Theo and his crazy sister away.

‘Ash vs Evil Dead’ Season 1 Episode 3 Recap: Books From Beyond

Ash vs Evil Dead Season 1 Episode 3
Bruce Campbell (as Ash), Ray Santiago (as Pablo), and Dana DeLorenzo (as Kelly) in ‘Ash vs Evil Dead’

The third episode of Ash vs. Evil Dead begins with Ruby Knoby, played by Lucy Lawless, finding her way to Kelly’s dad’s grave. When he returns as a deadite, she grabs him and tries to get information from him by using a knife that seems to have special powers over deadites.

After the cut scene to the title page we find ourselves with Ash (Bruce Campbell), Pablo (Ray Santiago), and Kelly (Dana DeLorenzo) outside the book shop, Books From Beyond. Ash brings the Necronomicon inside to get information about it, when Amanda Fisher (Jill Marie Jones) sees him and tries to arrest him. Pablo comes up behind her and knocks her out, saving Ash. After the owner of the shop gives them a brief history of the book, Ash decides to summon a minor demon who should be able to tell him how to close the portal. Ash’s twisted reasoning behind the decision: Summoning another demon would be like throwing paint on a painting. There is already paint on it, so it’s fine.

So, they summon the demon and it turns out to be stronger than they thought it would be. Meanwhile, Kelly has been charged with guarding Amanda in a backroom in the book store but Amanda fairly easily convinces Kelly to set her free. When she does, Amanda accidentally disturbs the pattern on the ground that’s the only thing containing the demon. It escapes and immediately goes after Ash, killing the book dealer in the process. As it’s killing Ash, Pablo attempts to help out but instead is also caught in the demon’s grasp. Then Kelly picks up the Necronomicon and smashes it into the demon which immediately disintegrates.

The battle with the minor demon is over, the shop’s in shambles, and Ash isn’t really any closer to solving the deadite problem. The trio slips away from Amanda, but the only information they seemed to have gathered from the demon is that the key to stopping the deadites lies within Ash himself.

‘Once Upon a Time’ Season 5 Episode 9 Recap: The Bear King

Once Upon a Time‘s season five episode nine filled the second hour of a two-hour Once block on Sunday, November 15, 2015. While episode eight dealt with Emma and Hook’s relationship and what went on in Camelot, episode nine centered around Merida’s quest to find her father’s killer and to retrieve a magical item. The folks from Storybrooke are absent from this episode and instead Merida, Arthur, and Zelena play key roles along with two familiar faces from previous seasons: Mulan and Red. And although it’s not the usual Once Upon a Time tale, episode nine titled “The Bear King” was welcome break after the heartbreak of episode eight.

Recap of Once Upon a Time Season 5 Episode 9:

Zelena (Rebecca Mader) and Arthur (Liam Galligan) are back in Camelot after their fight with Emma (Jennifer Morrison) in the forest, and Arthur’s upset he still has to work with Zelena to defeat Emma and Merlin (Elliot Knight). He thinks there’s something in DunBroch that can help them do just that.

Merida (Amy Manson) visits her dad’s grave to tell him she saved her brothers and proved her worthiness to rule, but she wishes he was there to tell her how to do it. Her mom, Elinor (Caroline Morahan), tells her her father will always be there for her.

DunBroch, several years earlier… Merida’s dad, King Fergus (Glenn Keogh), visits the witch (Lily Knight) who turned his wife and sons into bears. He needs magic to fight off invaders and insure the future of his kingdom. The witch takes his IOU in exchange for the magic, telling him she’ll need something in the future. She creates a helmet that if worn in battle will give him exactly what he wants.

Two years later in DunBroch, the clans offer a crown to Merida at her coronation. The witch breaks up the ceremony and shows Merida and her mother the IOU. She demands 10,000 in gold or the helmet, or else she’ll curse the entire kingdom. Everyone will turn into bears in one day if they don’t give the witch what she’s owed.

Elinor frantically searches for the helmet without any luck, and Merida reveals her dad was wearing it in battle when he was killed. Merida knows the knight who killed her dad took the helmet, but her mom says she’s not allowed to go after him. However, Merida’s determined and claims her arrow won’t miss this time.

Two years earlier, Fergus gets upset when the clanspeople make fun of Merida. Fergus is teaching her about war, and Merida sees men writing their wills in case they die. He shows her his first war bow and gives it to her for her first battle. Fergus hired a soldier to tutor her in the art of war, but Merida doesn’t think she needs a tutor. It’s obvious she does after being easily knocked to the ground by her tutor who it turns out is Mulan (Jamie Chung)! Merida is fine with a female tutor who promises she’ll teach her to fight better than any man.

Flash-forward two years and Mulan is collecting debts. The men she visits to collect from are much larger but she’s more skilled. As she’s facing the last man standing, Merida shoots an arrow through his sleeve. Mulan knocks him out and Merida says she needs her help. Mulan’s not into honor anymore – she needs money now. Merida tosses her a bag of money and Mulan agrees to help her if she doesn’t ask any questions.

Zelena and Arthur visit the witch and are met by a wolf. Zelena knocks it out and the witch makes herself known. They want the helmet but the witch says she sent someone out to find it for her. She doesn’t know where it is and Zelena threatens her until she gives up Merida’s name.

Merida and Mulan go to where her father was killed and Merida finds an arrow she made. The arrow still has a piece of her father’s killer’s cloak attached to it and they’ll use that to track him down. Merida wants to know why Mulan closed off her heart and Mulan says, “A true warrior doesn’t let anything hurt them.”

Zelena and Arthur show up and Merida and Mulan demand to know why they want the helmet. Arthur says it’s the only way he’ll save Camelot and reveals the helmet has the power to make other men fight your battles no matter how dangerous they are. Merida is shocked and doesn’t believe it. Arthur says that’s how he’ll get his knights to fight Merlin. Zelena takes Merida’s bow, which was her father’s, and is going to use it plus a locator spell to find the helmet.

Merida is ready to go home but Mulan says they can use the cloak material to find the killer. It’s over for Merida because if her dad couldn’t lead without magic, there’s no way she can do it. She’ll tell the clan she’s not their leader and let them come up with a way to pay the witch back. Mulan tells her she can’t give up, but Merida points out Mulan did.

Flashback two years, Fergus clutches the helmet and stands alone on a river’s bank. Merida joins him, wanting to know how to inspire the clans and her father looks down at his helmet. He doesn’t answer at first but then says it’s by showing them you’re the first one willing to die. He thinks he can handle whatever the invaders throw at them.

Back with Mulan, she’s now at the witch’s wanting to find out who the cloak belongs to. The wolf approaches Mulan and although it looks like it’s about to attack, Mulan quickly figures out it’s not a real wolf. She knocks over a cauldron onto the wolf and it transforms into Ruby (Meghan Ory), who tells Mulan her friends call her Red. They go off together and Red says wolfing out is her thing but the witch put her under her thrall. Red says she’s heard of Mulan through Mary Margaret (Ginnifer Goodwin) and Emma, and Mulan wants to know how she ended up back in time.

Flashback to the day David (Josh Dallas) and Mary Margaret introduced the town to their baby. Red was watching from the back of the room and Mary Margaret came to her to find out what’s going on. Red doesn’t think she fits in because she’s the only one of her kind in Storybrooke. She wants to find more people like her and she has a bean that will allow her to go back to the Enchanted Forest. Mary Margaret says she needs to do whatever will make her happy, but she’ll miss her desperately.

Red tells Mulan she never found anyone like her. Mulan explains why she was at the witch’s and Red takes the cloak and says she’ll find the killer. (Having a werewolf’s sense of smell comes in handy sometimes.)

Merida tells her mom what’s going on and Mulan and Red barge in, telling her not to give up. They think they can find the knight who killed her father because Red can sniff him out.

Two years earlier, Mulan keeps Merida busy while the invaders show up (it was Fergus’ plan). Fergus leads his men into battle against unknown invaders and it’s a fierce (but not bloody because this is a family show) battle. Merida doesn’t want to miss the fight and she sees her father about to be killed. She shoots but misses, piercing only the knight’s cloak. He strips the helmet off of Fergus’ head and lifts his visor, revealing his face. It’s Arthur, but he’s not facing Merida so she didn’t see his identity.

Back to the forest with Arthur and Zelena… The bow has led them to the river bank where Fergus watched for the invaders to arrive. Zelena uses magic to lift it out of the lake. As it’s about to be Arthur’s, Merida knocks it away with an arrow. Red says Arthur’s scent is all over the cloak and that he killed Fergus. Merida confronts Arthur and he acknowledges the battle took place during his quest to find the missing piece of Excalibur. Arthur explains the helmet Fergus was wearing when he died wasn’t enchanted. It didn’t do anything magical during the battle. Merida figures out the troops followed her dad because they believed in him, not because of the helmet. However, she and Arthur both still need the helmet and Arthur says, “I’ve already killed DunBroch’s king. Now it looks like I’ll have to kill its queen.”

They attack each other while Mulan squares off with Zelena. Red throws sleeping powder on Zelena and knocks her out. Arthur tells Zelena to reach for the helmet and he’ll cut her down like he did her father, and just then three clansmen show up and have Merida’s back. Zelena awakens enough to magically transport Arthur back to Camelot. Merida thanks her clansmen who say they couldn’t let their queen fall. They will follow her because she’s just like her father.

Merida’s coronation finishes up as the witch barges in again. Merida has the helmet but she’s going to destroy it instead of handing it over. She will not be bullied into giving it back. The witch was hoping that was what she’d say. It was a test because Fergus had come to her to do a spell to insure the future of his kingdom. Lesson learned. The witch brought a gift: magical ale. One cup of it can summon the spirit of anyone who’s passed away. Merida will be able to talk to her dad.

At her father’s grave, Merida thanks Mulan and Red for their help. Mulan was trying to get over a broken heart and that’s why she changed so much. Red confesses she ate the only boyfriend she ever had, but she thinks Mulan might heal if she helps her search for werewolves. They hug and Mulan and Red take off on a quest to track down werewolves. Merida uses the ale and Fergus appears. Merida apologizes for losing faith in him and he says she made him realize he couldn’t use magic and be a true leader. All Merida wants to do is make him proud. They hug, cry, and hold each other until the ale’s magic wears off. Merida turns away from her father’s grave stone, looks fierce, and says, “Arthur, you have no idea what’s coming for you.”

‘Memento’ Remake Announcement Met with a Resounding No!

Memento

Fill this one under ‘completely unnecessary remake’ news: In a bizarre move, AMBI Pictures announced they’re planning a remake of Christopher Nolan’s Memento without Christopher Nolan. No, it’s not an early April Fool’s Day joke. If I hadn’t received the press release from a legitimate source I would question whether this is just an elaborate prank. Why would anyone other than Nolan ever revisit the world of Memento let alone attempt to remake that critically acclaimed film? Aren’t there any decent original ideas left to be explored?

Andrea Iervolino and Monika Bacardi are behind AMBI Pictures and will finance and produce the remake which it’s likely no one who’s ever seen the original film will watch. Apparently the rights to remake Memento were picked up by AMBI when it acquired the Exclusive Media Group library. Other titles include Cruel Intentions, Donnie Darko, Ides of March, and Snitch.

Jonathan Nolan wrote the original short story that spawned the feature film. Memento starring Guy Pearce stands as one of Christopher Nolan’s best films, earning two Oscar nominations and the Best Screenwriter of the Year award from AFI. The film also earned five Spirit Awards nominations, winning four including Best Feature and Best Director.

Announcing the remake Iervolino stated: “Memento has been consistently ranked as one of the best films of its decade. People who’ve seen Memento 10 times still feel they need to see it one more time. This is a quality we feel really supports and justifies a remake. The bar is set high thanks to the brilliance or Christopher Nolan, but we wouldn’t want it any other way.”

Iervolino’s statement actually supports the case for why a remake should not be attempted, as does AMBI’s Monika Bacardi’s. “Memento is a masterpiece that leaves audiences guessing not just throughout the film, but long after as well, which is a testament to its daring approach. We intend to stay true to Christopher Nolan’s vision and deliver a memorable movie that is every bit as edgy, iconic and award-worthy as the original. It’s a big responsibility to deliver something that lives up to the mastery of the original, but we are extremely excited and motivated to bring this puzzle back to life and back into the minds of moviegoers,” stated Bacardi.

Reaction to the remake news was swift across Twitter:
