‘Snow White’ Review: An Unnecessary Live-Action Take on a Classic Tale

Snow White Live-Action Film

In 2015, Disney released its live-action remake of their beloved 1950 animated classic Cinderella. The remake charmed audiences and many critics, becoming the 12th top-grossing film of the year. Since its success, Disney has remade more of its animated films as live-action, including Beauty and the Beast and The Lion King.

In 2025, Disney dares to make a live-action remake of the animated classic that started it all, the 1937 film Snow White. Rachel Zegler from West Side Story portrays the fair princess, while Gal Gadot from Wonder Woman slides into the role of her evil stepmother.

The movie begins with two little animals opening the fairy tale book Snow White, and a voiceover recites the classic opening line, “Once upon a time.” The narrator then reveals that Snow White was born during a significant snowstorm, leading her parents, the King and Queen, to name her Snow White. As she grew older, her parents emphasized to her the importance of being brave, kind, and truthful as a ruler; cue the first new, forgettable musical number.

The unnecessary remake moves along, largely staying true to the original, with Snow White’s mother dying and her father remarrying a beautiful and mysterious woman (Gadot). When the father doesn’t return from a crusade, the Evil Queen takes power and makes poor Snow White her servant.

Every day, the Evil Queen asks her magic mirror, “Who is the fairest of them all?” For years, the mirror replies that she’s the fairest. That is until Snow White comes of age and the mirror changes its mind, declaring Snow White the fairest in the land.

Consumed with jealousy and hate, the queen commands her huntsman to take Snow White out to a secluded place and kill her. The huntsman obeys the queen and takes the princess out to collect apples, but just as he’s about to end her life with his sword, she turns and asks why. He falls to his knees, apologizing, and tells her to run away and never come back because the queen wants her dead.

So, Snow White runs into the haunted forest, seeing scary images at every turn. Come morning, she befriends the animals that live in the forest, including rabbits, birds, and deer. Seeing she needs help, the woodland creatures lead her to a small cottage to rest. The small cottage turns out to be the home of the seven dwarfs.

Colorful but terribly unoriginal and marred by awful CGI effects, Disney’s live-action Snow White remake is a perfect example of why filmmakers should leave an animated classic alone. There is so much wrong with this dreadful remake, but let’s begin with the horrible CGI look of the dwarfs. The faces of the dwarfs have a ghostly, disturbing look, similar to the characters in The Polar Express. (It’s the uncanny valley phenomenon.) The CGI work is incredibly off-putting and distracting.

The new songs are forgettable and add nothing to the film.  Worse yet, the filmmakers alter and modify the lyrics to two classic songs from the original: “Whistle While You Work” and “Hi Ho, Hi Ho, It’s Off to Work We Go.” To any moviegoer who loves the original film or watched the “Disney sing-along” videos of the 1990s as a kid, this is sure to be upsetting and insulting.

Rachel Zegler and Gal Gadot deliver weak, cartoonish performances that come across as play-acting. None of the emotions portrayed in the film—fear, jealousy, love, happiness, or excitement—seem sincere. Additionally, Gadot’s attempt to sing in the film leaves much to be desired. In fact, it’s truly terrible and difficult to endure. The production and sets, ranging from the courtyard to the castle to the dwarf’s cottage, unfortunately, come across as another failure, appearing fake.

Here’s hoping that movie audiences will steer clear of this dreadful remake and instead seek out and enjoy the timeless animated classic from 1937.

The eighth and final season of Netflix’s critically acclaimed, very adult animated series Big Mouth will premiere on May 23, 2025. The streamer confirmed the date and released the list of big-name guest stars set to help send off the Emmy Award-winning comedy.

Cynthia Erivo, Holly Hunter, Steve Buscemi, Kristen Wiig, Quinta Brunson, Nathan Fillion, and Ali Wong lend their voices to the show’s final season. Richard Kind, Maria Bamford, Keke Palmer, David Thewlis, Thandiwe Newton, Natasha Lyonne, Aidy Bryant, and Rosie Perez also guest star.

The guest star list also includes Lena Waithe, Billy Porter, Stephanie Beatriz, Whitmer Thomas, Chelsea Peretti, Chloe Fineman, June Diane Raphael, Zach Woods, Craig Robinson, and Jack McBrayer.

“In the eighth and final season of Big Mouth, our beloved Bridgeton teens tackle new challenges as high schoolers such as driving, drugs, sexual inexperience, enthusiastic consent, porn and the teenage mind, cancel culture, their changing bodies, and (in the end) fear of the looming future. Through it all, friendship is the cornerstone for surviving this time of life—whether one’s puberty is just beginning, like for Nick who gets his first growth spurt, or near its conclusion, like for a maturing (and prematurely balding) Andrew,” reads Netflix’s synopsis. “At the height of the season, when many of our characters are in crisis, Compassion (personified as a new creature voiced by Holly Hunter), emerges as a crucial way forward.

Ultimately, though, this season is about the importance of sticking by and supporting your friends, especially when life gets overwhelming and messy. In the end, our kids step into the harrowing unknown of the future, made less afraid of what’s to come because they have each other.”

The 10-episode season features returning voice cast stars Nick Kroll, John Mulaney, Jessi Klein, Jason Mantzoukas, Ayo Edebiri, Maya Rudolph, Fred Armisen, Andrew Rannells, and Jordan Peele. Kroll, Andrew Goldberg, and screenwriter-directors Mark Levin & Jennifer Flackett created the series and serve as executive producers.

Wonka Inspired ‘The Golden Ticket’ Announces Casting Details

Netflix’s The Golden Ticket teaser welcomes viewers to a competition beyond imagination. The Willy Wonka-inspired competition series is seeking applicants 18+ and living in the United States. The streamer hasn’t released filming details or a targeted premiere date.

“We are thrilled to bring the magic of The Chocolate Factory to life like never before,” stated Jeff Gaspin, Vice President of Unscripted at Netflix. “This one-of-a-kind reality competition blends adventure, strategy, and social dynamics, creating an experience that is as captivating as it is unpredictable. For the first time, a lucky few won’t just have to imagine the experience—they’ll get to step inside the factory and live it.”

Netflix picked up the Roald Dahl Story Company rights back in 2021, and The Golden Ticket is the streamer’s first dive into the Charlie and the Chocolate Factory world. Eureka Productions is producing the series.

Netflix released the following casting info:

“Lucky contestants will have the chance to enter Wonka’s Chocolate Factory, but there’s a catch—only players who find a coveted golden ticket will gain entry to the factory. But a golden ticket doesn’t guarantee a sweet ride once the gates open; only those who can adapt, strategize, and withstand the unknown will make it through. Set inside a retro-futuristic dreamscape, this high-stakes social experiment will challenge players not just physically but mentally as they navigate games, tests, and temptations designed to probe their instincts, resilience, and ability to thrive in chaos.”

The Cleaning Lady Description, Courtesy of Fox:

The Cleaning Lady returns for an action-packed season four, with the series’ beloved characters in ever-changing and increasingly dangerous situations. After three seasons of being a pawn caught between the FBI and the world of organized crime, THONY (Yung) makes the bold decision to take charge of her own destiny — by exchanging her cleaning lady uniform for the scrubs of a surgical intern at a small community hospital.

Thony’s return to the medical career she sacrificed for her son, LUCA (Sanchez), opens a new path to citizenship for them both. But to make this happen, she must continue her service to the Sin Cara cartel — not as a cleaning lady, but as the new mob doctor — bringing her ever closer to JORGE (Cabrera), the cartel’s brooding new leader. Under the watchful eye of the hospital’s brusque yet handsome chief resident, DR. SEAN DUPONT (Bonjour), Thony straddles the line between two worlds until they inevitably come crashing into each other.

Newly enthroned as the head of Sin Cara, Jorge has ambitious plans to take the cartel in a surprising, yet lucrative, direction. He’s invested Sin Cara’s assets into a rare earth mine worth billions. It’s easy, legitimate money that will result in generational wealth for them all. But the old dogs of the cartel are unwilling to learn new tricks from their upstart leader, which results in a fracture within the organization. Flanked by his lieutenants, the veteran EL DON (Pardo) and quirky newcomer FENG (Uy), Jorge must fend off a mutiny within Sin Cara, which threatens the lives of everyone he loves.

Even from within the walls of a maximum-security prison, former head of Sin Cara, RAMONA (Del Castillo) remains a threat. She continues to exert influence through her unpredictable proxy on the outside, the loner only known as COWBOY HAT (Norris). But she’s vulnerable on the inside. When a tough prison gang puts Ramona in their crosshairs, she must dig deep into her devious bag of tricks to find a way to survive.

Meanwhile, FIONA (Millan) struggles to keep her cleaning business afloat, leading her into the world of identity theft. CHRIS (Lew) learns the painful truth about first love and channels his raw emotions into an unexplored passion — dance. And JAZ (Bryant) deals with the difficulties of being the perfect child in a decidedly imperfect family.

The Cleaning Lady continues its exploration of the experience of undocumented immigrants and the hurdles they face in this country. The series tells their stories of resourcefulness in the face of institutional adversity and the sacrifices they must make to achieve their American dream.

Their highly skilled team includes Nikki’s new husband, Mike Sherman, whose bantering bromance with Jason never gets in the way of results; Kemi Adebayo, a spiritually savvy detective with an astonishing knowledge base; and Helen Gale, MPU’s effervescent young forensic scientist. Jason also relies on his relationship with master hacker Wayne Pascal, both on and off the clock.

As the third season begins, MPU is tasked with cases ranging from a missing female collegiate rowing team who disappeared while on the water, a missing street artist due to donate his rare bone marrow to save his dying brother, and Nikki’s ongoing and dangerous association with Irish mob boss Charlie McGannon. But the most harrowing case to date is when MPU must band together in a race to find one of their own. Now more than ever, together, the team must work to find the missing or abducted and help reunite them with their loved ones before it’s too late.
