‘The Bad Guys 2’ Unleashes Its First Trailer

Catch up with Bad Guys – and meet the Bad Girls – in DreamWorks Animation’s The Bad Guys 2 trailer. The trailer confirms the Bad Guys are trying to be good, but that won’t be easy when they’re introduced to a trio of female villains: Kitty Kat, Pigtail, and Doom.

In an interview with The Wrap, director Pierre Perifel hinted at what’s happening with Wolf and the gang. “They’re struggling a little bit, going from job interviews to try and pay bills that they can’t afford, until they get captured by this trio of super villains and forced to do one last job,” said Perifel. “The movie is about testing Wolf’s determination to be a good guy. Did he make the right choice? That really is the big philosophical argument for him.”

The original film’s voice cast returns, with Oscar winner Sam Rockwell back as Mr. Wolf, SAG award nominee Marc Maron as safecracker Mr. Snake, SAG award nominee Craig Robinson as Mr. Shark, Grammy winner Anthony Ramos as Mr. Piranha, and Emmy winner Awkwafina as Ms. Tarantula. Emmy nominee Zazie Beetz voices Governor Diane Foxington, BAFTA winner Richard Ayoade is Professor Marmalade, Emmy winner Alex Borstein is Police Chief (now Commissioner) Misty Luggins, and Lilly Singh is sensationalist reporter Tiffany Fluffit.

Newbies to the animated sequel include Oscar nominee Danielle Brooks as Kitty Kat, Oscar nominee Maria Bakalova as Pigtail, and Emmy nominee Natasha Lyonne as Doom.

“In the new action-packed chapter from DreamWorks Animation’s acclaimed comedy smash about a crackerjack crew of animal outlaws, our now-reformed Bad Guys are trying (very, very hard) to be good, but instead find themselves hijacked into a high-stakes, globe-trotting heist, masterminded by a new team of criminals they never saw coming: The Bad Girls,” reads Universal Pictures’ synopsis.

Based on Aaron Blabey’s bestselling book series, The Bad Guys 2 is co-directed by JP Sans and produced by Damon Ross. The Bad Guys opened in theaters on April 22, 2022. The sequel will debut on August 1, 2025.

‘Gladiator II” Review: An Unnecessary and Hollow Sequel

Gladiator II
Paul Mescal as Lucius and Pedro Pascal as Marcus Acacius in ‘Gladiator II’ (Photo Credit: Aidan Monaghan © 2024 PARAMOUNT PICTURES)

Back in 2000, audiences got swept up in Ridley Scott’s epic historical film Gladiator, cheering for Russell Crowe’s Maximus to defeat the psychotic emperor Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix) in the arena. Now, Scott continues the story in the sequel Gladiator II.

Set 16 years after the original, the sequel follows a grown-up Lucius (Oscar nominee Paul Mescal, Aftersun) living in Numidia, preparing to battle the Romans with his archer wife. Under the command of General Marcus Acacius, played by Pedro Pascal (The Last of Us), the Roman navy overwhelms Lucius’ city. Acacius triumphs, seizing the city, killing Lucius’ wife, and taking Lucius captive as a slave.

Once in Rome, Lucius and other slaves are thrown into the arena to fight against deadly giant monkeys. Lucius survives and in doing so, snags the attention of Macrinus (two-time Oscar winner Denzel Washington), a “master of gladiators” and weapons dealer who buys him to be his prize champion gladiator. Macrinus sees a rage in Lucius and asks if he can offer someone up to him to satisfy it. Lucius tells his owner he wants the head of General Acacius. Macrinus promises Lucius that Acacius will be his if he wins enough battles in the arena.

After returning victorious to Rome, General Acacius is met with a celebration planned by twin Emperors Geta (Joseph Quinn, A Quiet Place: Day One) and Caracalla (Fred Hechinger, Thelma), who intend to honor his triumph with arena games before dispatching him to conquer yet another city for Rome. Once alone with his wife, Lucilla (Gladiator‘s Connie Nielson), Acacius confesses he’s done killing men and losing soldiers in battle. He believes Geta and Caracalla are evil and vile. When his army arrives in a few days, he plans to take Rome by force.

The collision course of Lucius, Acacius, Lucilla, Macrinus, and the two emperors involves a tangled web of intrigue, betrayal, and fate.

Overly dramatic with outdated CGI and unimpressive characters, Gladiator II comes across as a retread of the original film. It’s a lackluster sequel missing the riveting battle and fighting scenes of the first film.

Paul Mescal gives a strong performance as Lucius, Lucilla’s son who, as a young boy, saw Commodus murder Maximus in the arena. Now, he must carry on his father’s legacy and fight not only Acacius but the unfairness of Rome and those who misuse their authority. However, Mescal’s portrayal of Lucius falls short of the bravado and charisma that Russell embodied as Maximus. He’s a second-rate hero, at best.

Denzel Washington gives a larger-than-life performance as Macrinus, the gladiator owner and ex-slave who has plans to seize as much power as he can, no matter what it takes. On the downside, Washington’s performance borders on camp.

The costumes and set design are well done, but, again, nowhere near as impressive as in the original film.

All too familiar and relying heavily on CGI, Gladiator II is an unnecessary sequel missing stirring action and captivating characters. It’s an empty and hollow follow-up to Ridley Scott’s Oscar-winning epic.

Blue Bloods is a drama about a multi-generational family of cops dedicated to New York City law enforcement. Frank Reagan is the New York Police Commissioner, and heads both the police force and the Reagan brood. He runs his department as diplomatically as he runs his family, even when dealing with the politics that plagued his unapologetically bold father, Henry, during his stint as chief. A source of pride and concern for Frank is his eldest son, Danny, a seasoned detective, family man, and Iraq War vet who, on occasion, uses dubious tactics to solve cases with his partner and new mother, Detective Maria Baez.

Erin, the middle daughter, is a New York assistant D.A. who serves as the legal compass for her siblings and father, while also pursuing a run for district attorney. Jamie is the youngest Reagan, a Harvard Law graduate and the family’s golden boy. Unable to deny the family tradition, Jamie decided to give up a lucrative future in law and follow in the family footsteps as a cop. He’s found a friend and ally in his wife, Eddie, who keeps him on his toes, and has very different reasons than the Reagans for joining the police force.

Accused Description, Courtesy of Fox

Accused is a collection of intense, topical and human stories of crime and punishment. Each episode is a fast-paced provocative thriller, exploring a different crime, in a different city, with an entirely original cast. Based on the BBC’s BAFTA-winning crime anthology, each episode opens in a courtroom on the defendant, with viewers knowing nothing about their crime or how they ended up on trial.

Told from the defendant’s point of view through flashbacks, the show holds a mirror up to current times with evocative and emotional stories. In the end, audiences will discover how an ordinary person gets caught up in extraordinary circumstances, and how one impulsive decision can impact the course of that life – and the lives of others — forever.
