‘The Day of the Jackal’ Preview: Cast, Plot, Photos, and Premiere Date

Are you looking for the next engrossing drama to binge? Peacock’s new 10-episode thriller The Day of the Jackal, premiering on November 14, 2024, stars Eddie Redmayne as a master assassin with ice water in his veins and the skill to take out what should be untouchable targets.

The first five episodes will stream on November 14th, with new episodes arriving on Thursdays leading up to its epic finale on December 12th.

The riveting drama is based on Frederick Forsyth’s acclaimed novel, previously adapted into an Oscar-nominated film starring Edward Fox in 1973. Redmayne stars as The Jackal, Lashana Lynch is Bianca, and Úrsula Corberó is Nuria. The supporting cast includes Charles Dance, Richard Dormer, Chukwudi Iwuji, Lia Williams, Khalid Abdalla, Eleanor Matsuura, Jonjo O’Neill, and Sule Rimi.

“An unrivaled and highly elusive lone assassin, the Jackal (Eddie Redmayne), makes his living carrying out hits for the highest fee,” reads Peacock’s synopsis. “But following his latest kill, he meets his match in a tenacious British intelligence officer (Lashana Lynch) who starts to track down the Jackal in a thrilling cat-and-mouse chase across Europe, leaving destruction in its wake.”

Executive producers include Gareth Neame, Nigel Marchant, Sam Hoyle, Sue Neagle, and series star Eddie Redmayne. Ronan Bennett writes and executive produces, and Brian Kirk is a director and executive producer. Additional directors include Anthony Philipson, Paul Wilmshurst, and Anu Menon.

“The Jackal is a meticulous planner with extraordinary talent for what he does, as is Eddie Redmayne. And he is relentlessly pursued across Europe by resolute law enforcement agent Bianca, stunningly realized by Lashana Lynch. The Jackal in the novel is something of a ghost but the appeal of a ten-part series would be to have a fully rounded character and our show introduces a dual life featuring the peerless Úrsula Corberó,” stated executive producers Neame and Marchant.

Neame and Marchant continued: “What we have created embodies the same winning original elements from the novel and film, but is very much a modern, elegant and distinctive take on a globe-trotting dramatic thriller. With its myriad of stunning locations, propulsive action set pieces, and distinctly complex characters, we are thrilled to bring this truly global drama to audiences.”

‘Outer Banks’ Will Wrap Up with Season 5

Outer Banks Season 5 Announcement
The cast of Netflix’s ‘Outer Banks’

There’s good news and bad news for Outer Banks fans. First, the good news. Outer Banks has officially been renewed for season five. The bad news? The fifth season will be the show’s final season.

Series co-creators Jonas Pate, Josh Pate, and Shannon Burke penned a note to fans, explaining the decision:

“Dispatch to all Pogues:

Seven years ago, in the summer of 2017, we came across a photo of teenagers on a beach at dusk during a power outage. That photo sparked an idea for a story of four best friends who only want to have a good time all the time. From this beginning, we imagined a mystery that would lead to a five-season journey of adventure, treasure hunting, and friendship.

At the time, seven years ago, it seemed impossible that we would really get to tell the whole five season story, but here we are, at the end of our fourth season, still chopping away.

The fourth season was our longest and hardest – but most rewarding – to produce. The season ends with a feature length episode, which we think is our best, most powerful episode. We hope you feel the same way.

Now, with a little sadness, but also excitement, we’re putting Season Four behind us, and are turning to Season Five, in which we hope to bring our beloved Pogues home in the way we imagined and planned years ago. Season Five will be our last season, and we think it will be our best yet. We hope you’ll join us for one more paddle out to the surf break.

P4L,
Josh, Jonas, and Shannon”

Netflix didn’t release any details on the upcoming fifth and final season. The streamer did confirm writing is underway.

Season four part one premiered on October 10, 2024. Part two is scheduled to arrive on November 7th. The popular series stars Chase Stokes as John B., Madelyn Cline as Sarah Cameron, Madison Bailey as Kiara, Jonathan Daviss as Pope, Rudy Pankow as JJ, and Carlacia Grant as Cleo. Drew Starkey plays Rafe, Austin North is Topper, Fiona Palomo is Sofia, J. Anthony Crane is Chandler Groff, Pollyanna McIntosh is Dalia, and Brianna Brown is Hollis Robinson.

The ensemble also includes Rigo Sanchez as Lightner, Mia Challis as Ruthie, and Cullen Moss as Shoupe.

Outer Banks Season 4 Synopsis, Courtesy of Netflix:

Following last season’s 18-month flash-forward showing Wes Genrette’s proposal for the Pogues to find Blackbeard’s treasure, Season 4 takes us back in time to the lead-up of that moment. After finding the gold at El Dorado, the Pogues return to the OBX and commit to having a “normal” life. They’ve built themselves a new safe haven, officially dubbed “Poguelandia 2.0”, where they live together and run a fairly successful bait, tackle, and charter tour shop.

But after some financial setbacks, John B, Sarah, Kiara, JJ, Pope, and Cleo take Wes up on his offer, drawn back into the “G” game for a whole new adventure. But before they know it, they’re well in over their heads, with dangerous new enemies hot on their heels racing them to the treasure. Meanwhile, their problems are only growing, and they’re forced to question their past, present, and future – who they really are, has it all been worth it, and how much are they willing to risk?

‘Heretic’ Review: A Psychological Horror Movie That Seeps Into Your Mind

Heretic Movie Review
Hugh Grant, Sophie Thatcher, and Chloe East in ‘Heretic’ (Credit: Kimberley French / A24)

Some religions request/require their followers to go door-to-door spreading the word of…their religion. Sounds kind of scary on both ends, doesn’t it? Well, that’s the crux of A24’s horror movie Heretic.

Heretic is about two Latter-day Saints missionaries, Sister Barnes (Sophie Thatcher from Yellowjackets) and Sister Paxton (Chloe East from The Fablemans), who happen to knock upon the door of a man named Mr. Reed (Hugh Grant from, well, just about everything, but most recently Wonka). At first, it seems like a normal “can we tell you about Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior” kind of experience, but when Mr. Reed invites the two girls inside for some blueberry pie, things get a little awkward. Mr. Reed puts the girls through their paces with his philosophical questions about their religion, but his testing doesn’t stop with mere conversation.

In a year full of religious horror (see Immaculate, The First Omen, The Exorcism, etc.), Heretic is not at all what one would expect it to be. It would seem as though the movie, written and directed by Scott Beck and Bryan Woods (the pair that wrote A Quiet Place), would be about a psycho tormenting a pair of good-girl missionaries. And it is. But it’s not the kind of torment that one would think.

Heretic is a very wordy movie, with Mr. Reed deciding to use philosophy and power to try to get the girls to question their own faith. And he’s done his homework – as a “religious scholar,” he’s familiar with most (if not all) of the world’s major religions, and he is able to poke holes in the girl’s beliefs easier than he’d be able to poke holes in their skin with a knife.

Mr. Reed’s argument is very convincing. He compares the world’s religions to board games and pop music, basically drawing comparisons and pointing out that they all come from the same place. He also believes that he has found “the one true religion,” which both fascinates and terrifies the girls. For religious folks, that may be the scariest part of Heretic: that it forces one to confront their own beliefs critically.

Now, there is actual scary, horror-movie stuff that happens in Heretic. It’s not all Hugh Grant picking apart his Mormon prey’s belief systems. But, by the time the movie gets to the gore, it’s almost too late. The audience is already intrigued by Mr. Reed’s thesis, and kind of wants to hear more. Make no mistake, Mr. Reed is absolutely the villain in Heretic, but he has a few good points, and he’s articulate enough to force an audience to listen.

Speaking of Hugh Grant, the acting in Heretic is commendable. It’s essentially a three-person show, sort of unfolding a bit like a stage play, and each character plays off of the other very well. The Sisters have each been brought to their church through different means, Sister Paxton was born into it while Sister Barnes was converted, and one can feel the difference in their commitment. Sophie Thatcher and Chloe East are both note-perfect in their respective portrayals, Thatcher’s Barnes more streetwise and worldly than the naïve Paxton.

Which brings us to Hugh Grant. As relatable as one or the other of the Sisters are to the viewer, it is Grant who steals the show. Mr. Reed is one of those creepily intelligent antagonists, one who wounds with his words and not with his hands. Grant is supremely up for the task, breathing terrifying life into the words with which he is challenging the minds of his victims. He doesn’t just say his lines, he oozes them with sarcasm, charm, wit, and confidence. This is right up there with his villainous performance in Paddington 2.

Thankfully, Heretic is not a possession movie. That already sets it above the pack as far as religious horror goes, as possessions are almost as passé as zombies and vampires at this point. This is more of a psychological horror movie, one that seeps into the mind more than it churns the stomach or hastens the heartbeat. Some horror purists might argue that it’s not scary enough, or that it’s not gory enough, or that it talks too much. And they wouldn’t necessarily be wrong. But Heretic doesn’t need all that. It makes its point nicely without it.

‘Who Killed JonBenét Ramsey’ Docuseries Trailer and Premiere Date

The unsolved murder of six-year-old JonBenét Ramsey continues to fascinate true crime fans. The Netflix documentary series Cold Case: Who Killed JonBenét Ramsey dives into the case, with Oscar-nominated director Joe Berlinger exploring the mishandling of the murder investigation by both the police and the media.

The three-part docuseries premieres on November 25, 2024.

“On December 26, 1996, John and Patsy Ramsey woke up the morning after a loving family Christmas to discover their youngest child, six-year-old JonBenét, was missing, a chilling ransom note left downstairs. Later that day, John Ramsey discovered his daughter’s body in the basement, revealing the shocking truth that JonBenét had not been kidnapped, but was instead sexually assaulted and brutally murdered in their own home,” reads Netflix’s synopsis. “The Boulder, Colorado police, who had little practical experience in homicide investigations, quickly cast suspicion on JonBenét’s family as the most likely suspects, fanning the flames of media scrutiny and largely one-sided reporting, turning the case into a national obsession.

Twenty-eight years later, that obsession — and finger-pointing — hasn’t gone away, and the murder of JonBenét Ramsey remains unsolved.”

Berlinger executive produces along with Craig D’Entrone, Jon Kamen, and Jen Isaacson.

‘The End’ Trailer: Tilda Swinton and George MacKay Star in a Post-Apocalyptic Musical

It’s difficult to imagine that following apocalyptic events, the remaining humans will arbitrarily feel like busting out singing. But that’s what writer-director Joshua Oppenheimer envisions in The End. Described as a cautionary tale, The End opens in theaters on December 6, 2024.

The cast includes Academy Award winner Tilda Swinton (Michael Clayton), Academy Award nominee Michael Shannon (Nocturnal Animals, Revolutionary Road), George MacKay (1917), and Moses Ingram (The Queen’s Gambit). Bronagh Gallagher (Brassic), Tim McInnerny (Gladiator II), and Lennie James (Fear the Walking Dead) also star.

“From Academy Award-nominated director Joshua Oppenheimer (The Act of Killing) comes a poignant and deeply human musical about a family that survived the end of the world. Twenty-five years after environmental collapse left the Earth uninhabitable, Mother, Father and Son are confined to their palatial bunker, where they struggle to maintain hope and a sense of normalcy by clinging to the rituals of daily life—until the arrival of a stranger, Girl, upends their happy routine,” reads Neon’s official synopsis.

“Son, a naïve twenty-something who has never seen the outside world, is fascinated by the newcomer, and suddenly the delicate bonds of blind optimism that have held this wealthy clan together begin to fray. As tensions rise, their seemingly idyllic existence starts to crumble, with long-repressed feelings of remorse and resentment threatening to destroy the family’s delicate balance. But their reckoning with difficult truths also points to a different way forward, one based on acceptance, love, and a capacity for change.”

Oppenheimer directed, co-wrote the screenplay with Rasmus Heisterberg (A Royal Affair), and wrote the lyrics to the film’s songs with music by Joshua Schmidt.

“I want my films to be mirrors,” stated Oppenheimer. “I try to invite, cajole, sometimes even force viewers to acknowledge their most urgent truths. This inevitably requires confronting our self-deceptions, exploring their sometimes terrible consequences. Our ability to lie to ourselves is probably the tragic flaw that makes us human. And it will surely be the one that destroys our species—unless we stop and find the courage to recognize our lies for what they are.”
