Finn Wolfhard of Stranger Things fame stars in and co-directs the horror-comedy Hell of a Summer, set in a familiar location.…summer camp. Hopefully this outing can carve out its own unique niche in the well-trodden slasher film subgenre. The trailer’s heavy on comedy and light on horror, but it does offer a sampling of gore, so there’s that.
Wolfhard and Billy Bryk co-wrote, co-direct, and are part of the ensemble cast that includes Fred Hechinger, Abby Quinn, D’Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai, Pardis Saremi, Rosebud Baker, and Adam Pally.
“Hell of a Summer follows 24-year-old camp counselor Jason Hochberg (Hechinger), who arrives at Camp Pineway thinking his biggest problem is that he feels out of touch with his teenage co-workers,” reads Neon’s synopsis. “What he doesn’t know is that a masked killer is lurking on the campgrounds, brutally picking counselors off one by one.”
The slasher film had its world premiere at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival. Neon’s set an April 18, 2025 theatrical release.

Fox’s 9-1-1: Lone Star season five episode 11 reflects the state of the world right now, with an impending asteroid crash just one of the many emergencies The 126 is juggling. Episode 11, “Impact,” will air on Monday, January 27, 2025 at 8pm ET/PT.
Rob Lowe leads the cast as Captain Owen Strand, Ronen Rubinstein stars as T.K., Gina Torres plays Paramedic Captain Tommy Vega, and Jim Parrack is Judd Ryder. Natacha Karam plays Marjan Marwani, Brian Michael Smith is Paul Strickland, Julian Works is Mateo Chavez, Rafael Silva plays Carlos Reyes, and Brianna Baker is Nancy Gillian. Sierra McClain did not return for the fifth season.
“Impact” Plot: Owen makes a decision about his future. Tommy receives devastating news, and T.K. and Carlos worry about adopting Jonah. 9-1-1: Lone Star follows members of Austin’s 126 Fire Department led by Captain Owen Strand who, along with his adult son, T.K., moved to Texas to help rebuild the firehouse which had experienced a tragedy of its own. His team of diverse and qualified first responders include widowed Paramedic Captain Tommy Vega, Judd Ryder, who was the sole survivor of Austin’s original 126 house after a rescue call ended in tragedy; Marjan Marwani, an adrenaline junkie and badass firefighter who also is a devout Muslim; Paul Strickland, a transgender male firefighter, who bravely decided to transition on the job in Chicago and has a gift for observation worthy of Sherlock Holmes; and rookie firefighter Mateo Chavez.
Settling into his new home, T.K. caught the eye of police officer Carlos Reyes and the two began a romantic relationship eventually marrying in the season four finale. T.K hung up his firefighter helmet to become a full-time paramedic under Tommy’s guidance and works closely with fellow paramedic Nancy Gillian.
In the upcoming fifth season, Captains Strand and Vega, along with the 126 team, race into action when in a multi-episodic opening storyline, a catastrophic train derailment endangers several lives including some of their own. With Judd resigning from the 126 to take care of his recently handicapped son Wyatt (Jackson Pace), Owen must find a new lieutenant to replace Judd and has a difficult decision ahead of him when both Marjan and Paul apply for the promotion. Tommy is ready to take the next step in her relationship, but she finds the road to happiness is filled with obstacles.
On his 30th birthday, T.K. gets a surprise visit from someone from his past that could change his and Carlos’ lives forever. Now officially husband and husband, T.K. and Carlos’ marriage is put to the test when Carlos becomes obsessed with solving his father’s murder.
The promo materials for Companion state that the movie is “from the studio that brought you The Notebook and the creators of Barbarian.” That’s all you should know before going in.
For those who need a bit more, Companion is about a young woman named Iris (Sophie Thatcher from Heretic and Yellowjackets) who goes to a scenic cabin for a romantic getaway with her boyfriend, Josh (Scream’s Jack Quaid). A group of Josh’s friends, all paired up into couples, is there, too, and madness ensues.
And that is REALLY all you should know about the plot going in. Trust me. There are surprises at every turn of Companion, and they are best discovered organically through seeing the movie instead of hearing or reading about them beforehand.
What writer/director Drew Hancock, creator of television series My Dead Ex and Suburbatory, does with his feature film debut is not just genre-defying, it’s genre-bending. Companion goes from romantic comedy to sci-fi horror effortlessly, then sneaks back again before the viewer even knows where it’s been. Okay, so maybe it never goes back to FULL romantic comedy once it gets rolling, but rest assured – you’ve never seen anything like it. The concept itself may be a tad recycled, but the approach taken by Hancock is anything but.
So, what you’ve got with Companion is a sci-fi horror romantic dark comedy mystery teen movie. Or something like that. The broadly painted, stereotypical characters created by Hancock open up a world that’s unpredictable in its predictability. Every one of the archetypes acts out just as expected, but the results that are achieved are completely unexpected due to the fact that the movie’s plot is always one step ahead of the audience. Just when you think you’ve got Companion all figured out, it throws a wrench at you.
For her part, Sophie Thatcher gives an amazing performance as Iris. There are things she does that, if detailed here, will give away key plot points, so again, you’ll just have to trust me. Thatcher is able to capture and portray every single subtlety of her character, of which there are many. Every facial tick and vocal inflection, every uncomfortable bit of laughter or dramatic teardrop, it all means something and makes perfect sense in the context of the character.
Across from Thatcher is Jack Quaid, who is equally competent, even if his role isn’t quite as challenging. His Josh (because of course the character’s name is Josh) is the boyfriend who has one hand in Iris’ hand and the other in…well, other places. Quaid plays Josh with just the right amount of affection and suspicion to make the audience kind of trust him, at least until they’re given a reason not to. And since everyone at the cabin is more Josh’s friend than Iris’ friend, the whole setup is a recipe for chaos.
And there is chaos. And blood. This is where the “from the creators of Barbarian” part of the tagline comes in. There’s a darkness to Companion that, eventually, overshadows the starry-eyed infatuation of love that oozes over its prelude. The sense of impending doom is always there, it’s just a matter of who’s blood is going to be shed and who’s going to be causing that bloodshed.
Companion is an extremely difficult movie to review, simply because anything said about it probably says too much. Just know that it’s not what you think it is. There are twists and turns every minute, so just sit back, hold on, and enjoy the ride. And remember Drew Hancock’s name. This first feature will not be his last.

There’s a lot to unpack in Paramount+ with Showtime’s official Yellowjackets season three trailer. There’s (literal) backstabbing, lies empathically delivered, terrifying memories revealed, and promises of more bloodshed in the intense two-minute trailer.
The trailer was accompanied by new photos from the much-anticipated third season.
Critics Choice Awards winner Melanie Lynskey stars as Shauna, Emmy nominee Christina Ricci is Misty, Tawny Cypress plays Taissa, and Emmy nominee Lauren Ambrose is Van. Sophie Nélisse is Teen Shauna, Jasmin Savoy Brown is Teen Taissa, Sophie Thatcher is Teen Natalie, Samantha Hanratty is Teen Misty, and Courtney Eaton is Teen Lottie.
The cast also includes Liv Hewson as Teen Van, Steven Krueger as Ben Scott, Warren Kole as Jeff, Kevin Alves as Teen Travis, Sarah Desjardins as Callie, and Simone Kessell as Lottie. Elijah Wood returns in his recurring role as Walter. Two-time Oscar winner Hilary Swank and Joel McHale guest star.

Season three premieres on February 14, 2025 on Paramount+ with Showtime with the release of the first two episodes. The season debuts on-air on February 16th.

The murder-of-the-week at the center of ABC’s High Potential episode 10, “Chutes and Murders,” is introduced when two little girls literally collide with a dead body. A playground slide turns into a murder scene when the girls find their passage blocked by a corpse.
Nannies reveal the dead woman is Tara Foley, also a nanny who frequents the park. The medical examiner tells the detectives a heavy blow to the head killed her. Her attacker hit Tara nearby, and then she crawled into the slide to escape. She died around 10pm, and unfortunately, there aren’t any CCTV cameras nearby.
The nannies reveal a weird guy had been hanging around the park, and he seemed interested in Tara.
Morgan (Kaitlin Olson) has been quiet during all this, but Tara’s dinging phone is driving her crazy. She puts on a glove before retrieving it and discovers eight recent messages from Brett Lewis. The angry tone of a voice memo indicates Brent’s her employer, and he’s pissed she didn’t show up for work.
Lt. Selena Soto (Judy Reyes) orders Daphne (Javicia Leslie) and Oz (Deniz Akdeniz) to investigate the strange guy. Also, they need to speak with her next of kin or anyone who can provide clues about her life.
Meanwhile, Morgan and Adam (Daniel Sunjata) interview Brett and his husband, Jeff (Jai Rodriguez), and learn Tara had been their son Ward’s nanny for four months. Brett claims he liked Tara and wouldn’t have left an angry message if he’d known something was wrong. They describe Tara as sweet, loving, and a fan of TikTok dance videos. Jeff remembers her complaining about a guy who would follow her everywhere. Tara said he had a limp and was always reading a French paper.

Of course, Morgan knows where to find this stranger because only one place in LA sells French newspapers. While staking out the newspaper stand from a nearby diner, Morgan and Adam have a flirty exchange about orgasms. They spot their man, and Adam follows him into a building. It turns out the stranger is Charles Lavoie (Ken Marino), a private investigator. Adam knows Charles (aka Chuck the Canuck). He used to be a detective in the LAPD traffic department.
Charles explains that he and Adam came up in the LAPD together. But Charles retired early after accidentally shooting himself in the foot.
Charles was hired by Tara’s employers to see if she did anything “out of the ordinary.” She didn’t, and the Lewis’ fired him after not getting the desired results. (They thought she was abusing Ward.) Fortunately, he took lots of photos of Tara that he’ll bring them to the station.
Adam and Morgan question the Lewis’ and Brett comes clean about hiring the investigator without telling his husband. They discovered their former nanny, Rosa, let their son wander into the street after seeing a post in their Facebook group. She admitted it, and they fired her. Brett hired Charles after posts popped up saying Tara was endangering Ward. However, Ward loved her (he didn’t love Rosa), and Tara said the accusations were false. But Brett hired a PI anyway, to be safe.
Brett shows Morgan screengrabs of the posts about both Rosa and Tara written by Carina, and Morgan excuses herself to snoop around. She spots multiple nanny cams, which Jeff knew nothing about. Adam wants their footage … and their alibis from the time of Tara’s death.
Charles shows up with 1,500 photos of Tara and plops down next to Oz to go through them. (Lucky Oz!) Daphne’s happy that going through Tara’s phone will make her unavailable to join them.
Adam and Morgan question Carina (Eliza Coupe), and she admits she wrote the post about Rosa but not about Tara. Carina’s husband, Mark, usually watches their daughter, but she was with her when she witnessed Wade running out of the library unattended. After she wrote the post, group members slammed her for ruining Rosa’s career. She ultimately deactivated her account.
Daphne discovers Tara’s got someone in her phone labeled “Little Sketchy.” Tara may have had a stalker (besides Charles). She forwards the texts to Morgan, and they are super creepy. One even says he doesn’t know what he’ll do if he doesn’t see her soon.
Adam and Morgan comb through Tara’s apartment (Morgan much less methodically than Adam) and it appears Tara might have had money trouble. They find printouts of Carina’s posts and Morgan locates pepper spray. They’re puzzled that a lawyer’s number on a stickie turns out to be an immigration attorney. Her calendar shows she was planning to go to church the night she was murdered.
A flyer for a poetry slam in the trash leads them to “Little Sketchy.” Little Sketchy (real name Bryan Schlotzky) recites a horrible poem about Tara’s death on stage, he tells Adam and Morgan he knows who killed her.
Back at the station, Daphne continues to research the Facebook group while Oz suffers through 1,500 photos with Chuck the Canuck. Daphne’s not having any luck, but Oz thinks Carina’s husband, Mark, seems cozy with Tara in Chuck’s photos. There’s even one photo with him holding a bat that could be the murder weapon.
Morgan sees a photo of Tara wearing an old Seattle Supersonics sweatshirt, and she’d deduced from photos in Carina’s home that Mark’s from Seattle. Daphne’s sent out to interview Mark while Bryan arrives at the station for questioning.
Bryan reveals Tara was his babysitter, and on the night that she died, he was outside her apartment pulling off a John Cusack in Say Anything move. Other tenants can vouch for him since they weren’t happy he was disturbing the peace. Bryan believes Mark killed Tara and that Mark made Tara kick him out of her life.
Bryan’s sure Tara would never sleep with a married man.

Daphne questions Mark (Amir Talai), who claims he’s devoted to his wife and Tara was only a friend. On the night Tara died, he was hosting a book club at home. Also, he grabs the bat in the photo and proves it’s a plastic wiffle ball bat.
Adam confirms Brett’s alibi checked out, so their potential suspects list is shrinking. Tara’s toxicology results proved negative; defensive wounds were absent. She probably knew her attacker.
Photos suggest the other nannies knew her better than they admitted, so they need to be questioned again. Morgan and Adam handle it and learn Tara was working for $10 less an hour than the other nannies. They felt sorry for her and didn’t think she knew her worth. However, she wasn’t a joiner and didn’t take them up on their offers to help.
The nannies were all together the night Tara died. If she’d accepted their invitation, she’d still be alive. They claim Mark was the only person Tara was close to, and they know Mark’s wife, Carina, didn’t like that. Carina even showed up at the park and screamed at Tara and Mark.
Carina moves up on the suspect list, but the office security log confirms her alibi. Oz, Morgan, and Adam are leaving the nannies when Daphne calls with big news. The other people who posted negatively about Tara in the Facebook group are fake!
Morgan and Adam speak with Carina again and learn the argument wasn’t about Tara and Mark; Carina was mad about the wood Mark chose for their deck. She scoffs at the possibility she’d ever be jealous of a nanny. Also, she reminds them she deactivated her Facebook account after her one post about the Rosa incident during story time.

Morgan suddenly figures out the nannies are the ones posting negatively about Tara because all the texts come in during the story time hour when they have time off from watching the kids. They made up fake accounts, infiltrated the group, and then bullied Carina after she reported Rosa. They posed as Carina after she quit and dragged Tara. Morgan believes the nannies were lying to them and didn’t like that Tara replaced their friend and worked for less.
Rosa was super close with the other nannies, and each of the children’s lunch boxes had Spice Girl stickers. Rosa was Sporty Spice, and Tara refused to use that lunch box when she took the job. Morgan concludes that the nanny, Oksana, murdered Tara. Oksana’s Russian and the posts in the Facebook group follow Russian capitalization conventions. (Days of the week aren’t capitalized.)
A whole lot of exposition later and it turns out Oksana is Eastern Orthodox and Tara was classic Catholic. Tara had Exaltation of The Cross at 7pm marked on her calendar for September 27th. But Catholics recognize that on the 14th, so that means Tara was going to Oksana’s church – not her own. Tara must have realized it was Oksana bullying her. The immigration lawyer’s number on her board was to report Oksana for making a fake identity, which could get her visa revoked.
Oksana’s church is near the park, and Tara must have confronted her there. Oksana reacted by killing her.
The nannies lie and say they were together the night of Tara’s murder. However, when Adam brings up hidden nanny cams and the possibility of checking footage, they change their tune and admit Oksana wasn’t there. They claim Oksana is scary and forced them to lie.
Oksana’s arrested and confesses she killed Tara after Tara threatened her. The Russian government persecuted her family, and she won’t go back. She’d rather go to prison in America than be sent back to Russia.
The episode ends with Morgan meeting up with Jeff as he watches Ward play at the park. Morgan hands him a photo showing Tara and Ward together. It’s obvious Tara loved Ward, and Jeff gets emotional just looking at them together.
Morgan smiles as she watches her own kids, who’ve grown apart as Ava grows up, play on the spinner, laughing like they did when they were little.

Oscar nominee Uma Thurman (Pulp Fiction) is entering the world of serial killer Dexter Morgan with a series regular role in Dexter: Resurrection. Thurman’s the first Dexter newbie announced and will be joining returning Dexter alum Michael C. Hall in the titular role, James Remar as Harry Morgan, and David Zayas as Detective Angel Batista.
Dexter: New Blood‘s Jack Alcott will reprise his role as Dexter’s son, Harrison Morgan.
Paramount+ with Showtime hasn’t released a synopsis for this new addition to the Dexter franchise. However, they did offer the following description of Uma Thurman’s character:
“Thurman will play the series regular role of Charley, the ‘Head of Security’ for mysterious billionaire Leon Prater. A former Special Ops officer, Charley worked various high-level private security jobs before taking on her position as the resourceful and meticulous right-hand woman for Prater.”
Filming got underway this month in New York, with Paramount+ with Showtime aiming for a summer 2025 debut. Clyde Phillips (Dexter, Dexter: Original Sin) is serving as showrunner and executive producer. Additional executive producers include franchise star Michael C. Hall, Scott Reynolds (Jessica Jones), Tony Hernandez (Emily in Paris), and Lilly Burns (Russian Doll). Marcos Siega is directing six episodes and Monica Raymund will direct four.
Dexter: Resurrection is produced by SHOWTIME Studios and Counterpart Studios.
Uma Thurman’s credits include Kill Bill Vol. 1 and Vol. 2, Hysterical Blindness, Smash, Red, White and Royal Blue, and The Kill Room. Thurman recently completed work on Ballerina Overdrive with Iris Apatow and The Old Guard 2 starring Charlize Theron.
XYZ Films and Variance Films have set a March 7, 2025 theatrical release for Seven Veils starring Oscar nominee Amanda Seyfried (Mank). The drama reunites Seyfried with writer/director Atom Egoyan. The pair previously worked together on 2009’s Chloe with Julianne Moore, Liam Neeson, and Max Thieriot.
In addition to Seyfried, the film stars Rebecca Liddiard, Douglas Smith, Mark O’Brien, Vinessa Antoine, Ambur Braid, and Michael Kupfer-Radecky. Seven Veils debuted at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival and screened at the 2024 Berlin International Film Festival.
“After years away, theater director Jeanine (Seyfried) re-enters the opera world to stage her former mentor’s most famous work. Haunted by dark and disturbing memories from her past, Jeanine allows her repressed trauma to color the present as her personal and professional lives begin to unravel,” reads the official synopsis.
In 1996, Atom Egoyan directed the opera, Salome and has wanted to blend the world of opera and film for years. Egoyan was interested in finding out what the production of Salome would mean in our current culture. Discussing Seven Veils‘ origin, Egoyan explained, “Salome is a production I’ve done a number of times so when I knew that the Canadian Opera Company was remounting it, I thought this would be an ideal time to fuse the opera singers I knew they had booked with the script I had written.”
Egoyan added, “I wanted to explore how the themes of Salome could weave with the story of remounting this particular production. It’s not really an opera movie, it’s just using the world of the opera as a workplace like any workplace. We see the characters as they float in and out of scenes dealing with the preparation of the opera.”
Atom Egoyan, Niv Fichman, Simone Urdl, Kevin Krikst, and Fraser Ash serve as producers. Nate Bolotin, Maxime Cottray, Adrian Love, Noah Segal, John Sloss, Nick Spicer, and Aram Tertzakian executive produce.
Fans of The Lincoln Lawyer won’t be kept in suspense about what will happen after the shocking season three finale. Netflix finally officially confirmed the popular drama has been renewed for a fourth season. Even better news, the new season starts filming in February.
Netflix didn’t provide a synopsis of season four but did reveal it will be based on Michael Connelly’s sixth book of The Lincoln Lawyer series, The Law of Innocence. The streamer also revealed season four will consist of 10 episodes.
Before Netflix confirmed season four, co-executive producer and co-showrunner Ted Humphrey spoke with Tudum about the season three cliffhanger. “As far as what it all means, hopefully we will be able to show you in season four,” said Humphrey. “But clearly, the only thing Mickey could be thinking is, ‘WTF?’.”
The confirmed season four cast includes Manuel Garcia-Rulfo as Mickey Haller, Becki Newton as Lorna, Jazz Raycole as Izzy, Angus Sampson as Cisco, and Neve Campbell as Maggie McPherson. Humphrey and Dailyn Rodriguez are co-showrunners and executive produce along with author Michael Connelly, series creator David E. Kelley, Ross Fineman, Barry Jossen, Tana Jamieson, Matthew J. Lieberman, and Gladys Rodriguez.
The series premiered in May 2022 and spent 12 weeks on Netflix’s Global Top 10 list. Season two debuted in July 2023, and season three arrived in October 2024. The third season earned a 100% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes and earned a spot on the streamer’s Global Top 10 list for six straight weeks.
The first season of Paramount+’s School Spirits ended with Maddie finally uncovering the secret to her death…and it turns out she’s not really dead after all. Janet, a ghost, took over Maddie’s body so she’s stuck in the afterlife, hanging out with others who’ve died at the high school. The official trailer for season two shows Maddie’s friends, both the living and dead, teaming up to figure out how to get Maddie’s body back.
Season two will premiere on January 30, 2025 with the release of the first three episodes. New episodes stream on Thursdays.
Peyton List returns to lead the cast as Maddie Near. Kristian Ventura stars as Simon Elroy, Spencer MacPherson is Xavier Baxter, Kiara Pichardo is Nicole Herrera, Sarah Yarkin is Rhonda, and Nick Pugliese stars as Charley. Rainbow Wedell plays Claire Zomer, Josh Zuckerman is Mr. Martin, and Milo Manheim is Wally Clark.
Returning recurring guest stars include Maria Dizzia as Sandra Nears, Patrick Gilmore as Mr. Anderson, and Ian Tracey as Sheriff Baxter. Newcomers to the young adult drama include Jess Gabor (Shameless) as Janet Hamilton, Zack Calderon (The Wilds) as Diego Herrera, Miles Elliot (The Amazing Spider-Man) as Yuri, and Ci Hang Ma (Departure) as Quinn.
“Picking up from the shocking season one finale, the premiere episode ‘Whatever Happened to Maddie Nears?’ follows Maddie Nears (List) as she works to bring a doubting Simon (Ventura), her only connection to the living world, back on board to help her track down and collect her missing body,” reads Paramount+’s synopsis. “Throughout the season, Maddie Nears is still stuck in the afterlife with the knowledge of what happened to her, and must unite her friends in the spectral and living worlds in order to reclaim her stolen life.”
Nate Trinrud and Megan Trinrud created the series and serve as executive producers. Oliver Goldstick is the showrunner and executive produces along with Thomas Higgins. Series star Peyton List is a producer.

Trevor Noah will once again handle hosting duties at the Grammy Awards, committing to host the star-studded music awards for the fifth straight year. Despite wildfires decimating thousands of acres and destroying 12,000+ structures, the 2025 Grammy Awards will go on as planned. This year’s ceremony takes place in Los Angeles at the Crypto.com Arena and will air live on Sunday, February 2nd at 5pm PT/8pm ET on CBS.
Per the Recording Academy: “The 67th Annual Grammy Awards will carry a renewed sense of purpose: raising additional funds to support wildfire relief efforts and honoring the bravery and dedication of first responders who risk their lives to protect ours.”
In addition to hosting, Trevor Noah will serve as a producer with Ben Winston, Raj Kapoor, and Jesse Collins executive producing.
Beyoncé tops the list of 67th Annual Grammy Awards nominees, scoring 11 nominations including Record of the Year, Album of the Year, and Best Country Album. Charli xcx, Billie Eilish, Kendrick Lamar, and Post Malone earned seven nominations, with Taylor Swift, Chappell Roan, and Sabrina Carpenter picking up six.
