Steven Soderbergh and Starz Team Up on ‘The Girlfriend Experience’

Starz Greenlights The Girlfriend Experience

Starz is moving forward on a 13 episode run of The Girlfriend Experience based on the 2009 movie directed by Steven Soderbergh. Soderbergh and Philip Fleishman will serve as executive producers on the half-hour scripted anthology series. Amy Seimetz and Lodge Kerrigan are attached to write and direct the series.

“We are all such fans of the movie that the idea of exploring this world through many different characters, voices and points of view was especially intriguing,” said Chris Albrecht, CEO of Starz. “Steven and Philip’s approach to the format is unique and not something seen on the entertainment landscape today. Working with Steven is always a thrill, and we are excited to break the mold with this project yet again.”

“We’re in an exciting period of auteur-driven television right now,” added Soderbergh. “When Philip floated the idea of a Girlfriend Experience-inspired television show, I thought: ‘let’s make it a different woman in a different city, let’s pair two independent writer/directors, one male and one female, and let them do the whole thing.’ I’ve known Lodge for 20 years and I became a fan of Amy’s when I saw her first feature last summer. We went to Chris Albrecht because he and I have been trying to find something to do together since we did K Street 11 years ago. He responded without hesitation to both the idea of the show and the approach.”

“We’re excited to work with Steven and Philip to develop this anthology series that takes viewers into a world where intimacy has a price. We were captivated by Steven’s exploration of a story where emotional consequences arise, surprising and complicating the lives of both the clients and the professional ‘lovers’,” stated Carmi Zlotnik, Managing Director of Starz. “This series gives Starz an opportunity to work with some of the most talented independent filmmakers of today, and craft a cinematic exploration into the hearts of relationships – in line with the original film.”

The Plot:

The Girlfriend Experience explores the relationships of the most exclusive courtesans who provide their clients with far more than just sex. These purveyors – or GFEs (Girlfriend Experience) – share intimacies more common to romantic partners or husbands and wives, becoming quasi-lovers and confidants who are richly paid for their time.

Screenwriter Aline Brosh McKenna and writer/actress/comedian Rachel Bloom have been given a pilot order on their half-hour comedy Crazy Ex-Girlfriend. The project is moving forward at Showtime with co-creators Brosh McKenna and Bloom writing and executive producing. 500 Days of Summer and Amazing Spider-Man director Marc Webb is directing the pilot.

“This pilot is an exciting change of pace for us,” said David Nevins, President, Showtime Networks Inc. “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend is built on the inspired comedy and songwriting of Rachel Bloom – who we believe is ready to break out. And, we were lucky to attract director Marc Webb who is eager to flex different creative muscles after his blockbuster successes.”

“I am so happy to be working with Rachel Bloom, who is not just a powerhouse musical comedy talent, but also a fabulous writer and creator – I feel very lucky to have found her videos online,” said Brosh McKenna. “We are thrilled that Marc Webb, whom I’ve wanted to work with for such a long time, has come aboard as we move forward with the pilot. David Nevins has been a great champion of the show from the second we stepped into his office, and Showtime and CBS have been ideal creative partners. They’ve given us both freedom and support, which is all writers can really ask for.”

Pearl Jam Gets Into ‘Let It Go’

No, it’s not April 1st. This isn’t an April Fool’s Day joke. Pearl Jam frontman Eddie Vedder did perform “Let It Go” from Frozen while on stage in Milan, Italy. The surreal moment was caught on video (hopefully it won’t be taken down anytime soon) and shows 40+ seconds of Pearl Jam tackling the Frozen hit.

I guess we can safely assume Vedder (who has two young daughters) has been subjected to repeated viewings of the animated Disney film at home.

Doug Jones on ‘Falling Skies’ and Playing an Alien

Doug Jones Falling Skies Interview

Doug Jones was a bit surprised to read a Falling Skies season four script and discover that not only would be playing ‘Cochise’, an alien ally of the surviving humans on Earth, but that he’d also be playing Cochise’s father. However, Jones shouldn’t have been surprised to find out that he was going to be asked to handle more Falling Skies creatures.

Jones is a master at making fantastical creatures appear alive on screen as he fully disappears into every creature he’s ever been asked to play.

Jones, whose credits include Abe Sapien in the Hellboy films, Silver Surfer in Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, and Fauno/The Pale Man in Pan’s Labyrinth, joined Moon Bloodgood, Sarah Carter, and Seychelle Gabriel at WonderCon to discuss the fourth season of the sci-fi action series and what’s it like to be a part of Falling Skies‘ strange post-apocalyptic world.

Falling Skies season four premieres on TNT on June 22, 2014 at 10pm ET/PT.
