‘Intramural’ New Trailer and Poster Arrives

Set to premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival, Intramural takes place in the world of intramural sports and features a cast that includes Twilight‘s Nikki Reed, Kate McKinnon, Jay Pharaoh, Jake Lacy, Beck Bennett, Brian McElhaney, Nick Kocher and Gabriel Luna.

Searching for Sonny helmer Andrew Disney directed the comedy from a script by Bradley Jackson, and the trailer that’s just been revealed showing off their collaborative effort is not safe for work (due to language).

The Plot:

There comes a time in every fifth-year senior’s life where they must either accept the impending ‘real world’ of jobs, marriage, and payment plans or shirk that responsibility in favor of playing the most glorious intramural football game your school probably doesn’t really care to see. This full throttle and hilarious send-up of inspirational sports movies harnesses every cliché and overused trope to tell the greatest (and only) intramural sports story of all time.

‘Lizzie Borden Took an Ax’ DVD Review

Lizzie Borden Took an Ax Review
Clea DuVall, Sara Botsford, Christina Ricci and Stephen McHattie in 'Lizzie Borden Took An Ax' (Photo by Chris Reardon/Lifetime)

Christina Ricci makes for a wickedly perfect Lizzie Borden in the Lifetime movie Lizzie Borden Took an Ax now available on DVD from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment. Playing the title role, Ricci never allows the audience one moment of doubt as to what side the filmmakers come down on when it comes to whether Lizzie was in fact guilty of the brutal murders of her father and step-mother.

Without overplaying her hand or overstepping that line that would have turned her portrayal of Lizzie from put-upon daughter/angry young woman into psychopathic crazy-eyed killer, Ricci lets the audience behind-the-curtain and into the life of Lizzie as retold by screenwriter Stephen Kay (The Mod Squad) and director Nick Gomez (The Sopranos). And while you certainly won’t walk away from Lizzie Borden Took an Ax believing Lizzie was in any way justified for the vicious murders of her parents, at least the audience is given a bit of an explanation into why Lizzie was so frustrated and felt so trapped in her life that the only way out was to get rid of her parents. The extremely wealthy Andrew Borden was a miser, a skinflint who didn’t even provide his family with indoor plumbing. Lizzie and her sister Emma (played by Clea DuVall) were spinsters living unhappy lives as part of a dysfunctional family, resentful over the intrusion of their father’s new wife after the death of their mother. Lizzie stole from her parents and local stores, lied about her activities, and allowed her anger to build to the point where it took over and resulted in the delivery of 19 blows from a hatchet to Abby and 10 or 11 blows to Andrew.

The Lifetime movie also shows off a Lizzie who is mentally unstable and who would have, if the crimes were committed in contemporary times, likely have been diagnosed and sent to live out her life in an institution. Instead, the jury – thanks in large part in this version of events to the testimony of her sister – acquits Lizzie of the murders and sets her free. And in this version of the story, that makes Emma so nervous and frightened that she leaves her family’s home for good.

Both the wardrobe and production design help bring the 1890s to life, and if you’re a fan of Baz Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby then the use of modern music during key scenes in the film will elevate the mood and not distract you from the production. Particularly of note is the playing of the Black Keys’ “Psychotic Girl” while Lizzie’s walking home from church with her family.

Overall, this retelling of the still unsolved (according to the Fall River, Massachusetts jury’s verdict) murders of Abby and Andrew Borden is a solid offering that doesn’t disclose any new facts but does stick fairly close to the actual murder case. There’s a too-quick and convenient wrap-up to the film, but that’s the only real sour note Lizzie Borden Took an Ax hits.

GRADE: B

Lizzie Borden Took an Ax is available on DVD and Digital as of April 8, 2014. The DVD version runs 88 minutes and is unrated.

Season four’s premiere on April 6, 2014 at 9pm ET/PT averaged 6.6 million viewers, a new record for Game of Thrones. It was also an improvement of more than 52% over season three’s premiere and it was up 23% over season three’s finale. Adding in all the replays at 11pm and 1am, the number went up to 8.2 million viewers on opening night.

HBO Programming President Michael Lombardo made the official announcement, saying, “Game of Thrones is a phenomenon like no other. David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, along with their talented collaborators, continue to surpass themselves, and we look forward to more of their dazzling storytelling.”

Game of Thrones is based on George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire book series and stars Peter Dinklage, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Lena Headey, Emilia Clarke, Charles Dance, Aidan Gillen, Jack Gleeson, Kit Harington, Diana Rigg, Sophie Turner, Maisie Williams, Isaac Hempstead Wright, Alfie Allen, Jerome Flynn, Conleth Hill, John Bradley, Gwendoline Christie, Liam Cunningham, Stephen Dillane, Natalie Dormer, Iain Glen, Kristofer Hivju, Sibel Kekilli, Rose Leslie, Rory McCann, Michael McElhatton, Iwan Rheon and Carice van Houten.

April 2014 Episode Guide

The Basic Details of the Season Four Plot:

Encouraged by the Red Wedding slaughter in the Riverlands that wiped out many of their Stark nemeses, the Lannisters’ hold on the Iron Throne remains intact…but can they survive their own egos, as well as new and ongoing threats from the south, north and east? While an unbowed Stannis Baratheon continues to rebuild his army in Dragonstone, a more immediate danger comes from the south, as Oberyn Martell, the Lannister-loathing “Red Viper of Dorne,” arrives at King’s Landing to attend Joffrey’s wedding to Margaery Tyrell, and perhaps act on an ulterior agenda. In the north, a depleted Night’s Watch seems overmatched against the inexorable Wall advances of Mance Rayder’s army of wildlings, which in turn is being trailed by an even more formidable foe: the undead White Walkers. As if that weren’t enough, Daenerys Targaryen, accompanied by her menacing trio of dragons and army of Unsullied, is poised to liberate Meereen, the largest city in Slaver’s Bay, which could ultimately provide her with enough ships to sail to Westeros and reclaim the Iron Throne.

New Artist Spotlight: Dan + Shay

Early in 2013, Dan Smyers threw a party at his place. Among the folks who showed up was Shay Mooney. They’d never met, though both had been drawn to Nashville to take their chances in Country Music. (Smyers grew up in Pittsburgh, while Mooney came from Natural Dam, Ark.) After playing a few tunes together, they decided to try a little co-writing.

Flash forward to 2014. In those few months, they formalized their musical relationship as Dan + Shay; recorded a debut album (produced by Smyers, with Scott Hendricks and Danny Orton co-producing, released by Warner Bros. Records on April 1); surpassed a quarter of a million sales by March for their first single, “19 You + Me”; cut a video for the song, which quickly reached No. 1 on MTV, VH1, and CMT; and, on March 20, hit the road on Hunter Hayes’ “We’re Not Invisible Tour.”

How did they achieve full speed so fast? The secret is their sound. That debut album, Where It All Began, crackles with upbeat young energy. Their vocals suggest a Rascal Flatts influence: emotional, expressive twists on the melody and powerful harmonies over hard rockin’ riffs.

“19 You + Me” reflects their aesthetic perfectly. Written by the duo with Danny Orton, the lyrics outline nostalgic images of a summer romance. Yes, it is commercial, but it’s also impeccably done, with the passion and flair for drama that Country stardom demands. Undoubtedly, they’ll cover even more ground in the year to come.

IN THEIR OWN WORDS

DAN: “Dave Grohl. I can’t wait to hear the music he makes with Zac Brown Band.”

Baltasar Kormakur Will Direct and Produce ‘Trapped’

Baltasar Kormakur to Direct and Produce Trapped

Baltasar Kormakur will be following up the action film Everest starring Jason Clarke, Jake Gyllenhaal, and Josh Brolin with the crime series Trapped set up with his RVK Studios. Trapped will shoot this fall in Iceland, with Kormakur directing and producing the series based on his original idea. Klaus Zimmerman and Daniel March from Dynamic Television will executive produce the 10-episode series.

“I developed Trapped because I was fascinated with the idea of a terrible crime in a small town cut off from the rest of the world,” said Kormakur. “I am looking forward to putting a new spin on the Scandinavian crime genre for audiences around the world and I’m equally excited to be partnering with Dan and Klaus at Dynamic.”

Sigurjon Kjartansson and Clive Bradley wrote the series which “follows the investigation of a grisly murder of an unidentifiable man found in the water shortly after an International ferry arrives in a small town at the bottom of a fjord. Shortly after, a powerful blizzard hits the town with deadly force, making the only road in or out impassable.”

“Our excitement about the originality and brilliance of the material is only surpassed by our thrill to work with Baltasar and a great team of talented creators,” said March. “We are going to be very proud to deliver this series to our clients around the world.”

Trapped has all of the ingredients to be a very successful crime drama,” added Zimmermann, “The show will not only transport audiences to a stunning and exotic location, but will follow characters on an emotional journey filled with breathtaking tension.”

Jake Barker and Brittnee Camelle Battle it Out on ‘The Voice’

Adam Levine stole singers Brittnee Camelle and Jake Barker from Team Usher and during the Battle Rounds on The Voice he opted to pit the two pop singers against each other to see what each really had to offer. The singers chose to perform their former coach’s single, “Climax,” and mentor Chris Martin told both Brittnee and Jake to get more comfortable with the song before taking the stage and just to sing as naturally as possible.

Chris Martin’s advice worked as the singers earned high praise from all the coaches following their performance, although Usher didn’t want to pick a winner and instead said he sang it better.
