New Artist Spotlight: Eric Paslay

Eric Paslay Profile
Eric Paslay (Photo Credit: Eric Adkins)

Eric Paslay’s story is familiar, from his upbringing in Waco and Temple through his gigs on the Lone Star circuit and inevitable move to Nashville.

Eventually hired by Cal IV Publishing, the tall Texas redhead penned several hits. He won CMA’s coveted Triple Play Award for writing or co-writing three songs that hit No. 1 in 2012: “Angel Eyes,” “Even If It Breaks Your Heart” and “Barefoot Blue Jean Night,” which also was honored as ASCAP’s Country Song of the Year. Impressive, but not unique … yet.

The epiphany comes with his self-titled inaugural album, released Feb. 4 on EMI Records Nashville. Produced by Marshall Altman and Daniel Hill/Billy Lynn, its 11 tracks reflect the strength of this young artist’s work. Compositionally, he cultivates simplicity. Many of his verses cycle just three or even two chords. “Country Side of Heaven” (Paslay, Dylan Altman and Shane McAnally) hangs entirely on the I and V. But on that track, Paslay’s organic dynamics, his inspiring vocals and especially his ability to conjure compelling images enrich both his sound and his story.

Though all his songs are beautifully crafted, one may qualify as a masterpiece. Caressed by a sensitive arrangement, Paslay’s aching vocal and evocative lyrics on “She Don’t Love You” (Paslay and Jennifer Wayne) build on the title (“… she’s just lonely”) to cast a spell that doesn’t resolve until literally the last word. This is supreme writing and execution, by any measure.

Oscar producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron have announced the first performer for the upcoming Academy Awards, tapping Pharrell Williams to perform his nominated song “Happy.” Singer/songwriter/producer Pharrell’s song is featured in the animated family-friendly, minion-friendly Despicable Me 2.

“Happy” is competing in the Original Song category with “Ordinary Love” from “Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom,” “Let It Go” from “Frozen” and “The Moon Song” from “Her.” The fifth song, “Alone Yet Not Alone,” was disqualified after it was determined that Bruce Broughton (he wrote the music) sent an email to his fellow Academy Music Branch members identifying his song and asking voting members to listen to it.

The 2014 Oscars will take place on Sunday, March 2nd at Dolby Theatre at Hollywood & Highland in Hollywood, CA. Ellen DeGeneres will be hosting Hollywood’s biggest night.

Vikings Season 2 Photos

Vikings star Travis Fimmel provides some insight into season two in this new video from History Channel. Fimmel discusses what motivates Ragnar Lothbrok, how much he’s into his family and community, and what audiences can expect to see in this upcoming season.

Season two kicks off on February 27, 2014 at 10pm ET/PT.

Details on Vikings Season Two:

The hit drama series centers on Ragnar, a restless young warrior and family man who longs to find and conquer new lands across the sea and claim the spoils as his own. Now he is an Earl, allied with King Horrik (Donal Logue). With more power than ever before, his desire to sail west and explore new kingdoms remains unquenchable.

Yet there’s a heavy price to pay for Ragnar’s ascent to greatness. Season two brings crises of faith, of power, of relationships. Brothers rise up against one another. Loyalties shift from friend to foe, and unlikely alliances are formed in the name of supremacy. Plots are hatched, scores are settled, blood is spilled…all under the watchful eyes of the gods.

New to the cast of Vikings are Alexander Ludwig as Bjorn, the intelligent and bold warrior son of Ragnar Lothbrok, and Linus Roache as Ecbert, King of Wessex, a man of strength, knowledge and undisguised ambition. They join Travis Fimmel as Ragnar Lothbrok; Katheryn Winnick as Lagertha, a fierce shield maiden and Ragnar’s wife; Clive Standen as Rollo, Ragnar’s impulsive, wild, care-free brother; George Blagden as Athelstan, a young and not-so-innocent Monk; Jessalyn Gilsig as Siggy, beautiful wife of the late Earl Haraldson; Donal Logue as King Horrik, who desires to make the increasingly famous Earl Ragnar an ally and supporter; Gustaf Skarsgard, a ship builder who designs the new generation of Vikings ships; and Alyssa Sutherland as Princess Aslaug, Ragnar’s new love interest.

The Exes Plot:

The Exes revolves around the unlikely trio of Phil (Faison), Haskell (Knight) and Stuart (Basche), three roommates and divorcés who have finally found bromance after initially being forced to live together by their divorce attorney and landlord, Holly (Johnston). Most recently, Leah Remini joined the sitcom in a recurring role, appearing in seven of the 10 episodes this season as Nicki, a tough talking, no-nonsense woman from Staten Island. Devil’s Mile Debuts a Poster and Gets a Distribution Deal

Writer/director Joseph O’Brien’s horror/crime/thriller Devil’s Mile has a new poster to show off as well as news on a distributor. Phase 4 has picked up the film’s North American distribution rights and plans to roll it to audiences this summer. As for the new poster, it was illustrated by artist Justin Erickson who’s also responsible for Godzilla‘s engaging poster.

“I was so thrilled to have Justin on board – I’ve been a fan of his art for ages – and I knew he’d do a great job. But when I saw what he had come up with, I was blown away,” says director O’Brien. “He captured the atmosphere and starkness of the film in a way that was very striking, original and – and I mean this in the best possible terms – not at all what I had expected. It was fresh and surprising and I can’t wait to show it to people … and have it up on my office wall!”

Devil’s Mile really stands out as a successful mix of great characters, supernatural atmosphere, and crazy effects scares,” says WTF’s Greg Chamblet who’ll be representing the film at the Berlin Film Market. “It gels incredibly well together and it always surprises.”

“It’s a film we’re all extremely proud of, and it’s incredibly satisfying to be able to present it to the world,” says Devil’s Mile executive producer Mark Opausky. “ We couldn’t ask for better partners in Phase 4 and WTF to bring Devil’s Mile to audiences, or for a more evocative and eye-catching poster to lead the charge.”

The Plot of Devil’s Mile:

A relentlessly-paced hybrid of gritty crime thriller and supernatural horror, Devil’s Mile follows a trio of kidnappers who take an ill-advised detour en route to deliver their hostages — two teenage girls — to their mysterious and powerful employer. When they accidentally kill one of the girls during a botched escape attempt, their simmering mistrust explodes into shocking violence. But what they thought was their worst case scenario is only the beginning, as they are engulfed by the hellish forces that haunt the road — a road they realize they may never escape. Now captors and captive must fight together to escape the monstrous forces pursuing them and somehow survive Devil’s Mile.

In their quest for power, they will scheme, manipulate and seduce their way onto the English throne.

The year is 1464, before the Tudor dynasty ruled the country, and war has been ravaging throughout England over who is the rightful King. It is a bitter dispute between two sides of the same family, The House of York and The House of Lancaster.

The House of York’s young and handsome Edward IV is crowned King of England with the help of the master manipulator, Lord Warwick “The Kingmaker.” But when Edward falls in love with a beautiful Lancastrian commoner, Elizabeth Woodville, Warwick’s plan to control the throne comes crashing down. A violent, high-stakes struggle ensues between Elizabeth, her most fierce adversary, Lancastrian Margaret Beaufort, and Anne Neville, the pawn in her father’s power game – each woman vying for the crown.
