Hoffman was executive producing and starring in the Showtime series Happyish at the time of his death, and the network also released a statement following his passing:
Philip Seymour Hoffman was one of our generation’s finest and most brilliant actors. He was also a gifted comedic talent. It was a great privilege and pleasure to work with him and we are all absolutely devastated by this sudden loss. Our thoughts go out to his family at this very difficult time.
There’s no word yet on what will ultimately happen to Happyish.

Marvel Studios’ Captain America: The Winter Soldier offered up not one but two new trailers on Super Bowl Sunday. The trailer that actually debuted during the big game was a 30 second teaser featuring the National Anthem, and that was followed by the premiere of a 2 1/2 minute trailer online. Both versions show off the action coming in the Captain America sequel set to open in theaters on April 4, 2014.
The Plot:
After the cataclysmic events in New York with The Avengers, Marvel’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier finds Steve Rogers, aka Captain America, living quietly in Washington, D.C. and trying to adjust to the modern world. But when a S.H.I.E.L.D. colleague comes under attack, Steve becomes embroiled in a web of intrigue that threatens to put the world at risk. Joining forces with the Black Widow, Captain America struggles to expose the ever-widening conspiracy while fighting off professional assassins sent to silence him at every turn. When the full scope of the villainous plot is revealed, Captain America and the Black Widow enlist the help of a new ally, the Falcon. However, they soon find themselves up against an unexpected and formidable enemy—the Winter Soldier.
We now know what that secret project Jerry Seinfeld was shooting with Jason Alexander in front of Tom’s Restaurant (aka Monk’s Cafe) was all about. The Seinfeld reunion was shot for a special edition of Seinfeld’s “Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee” series, with just a snippet of the episode spotlighted during the Super Bowl XLVIII halftime.
The special edition of “Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee” marks the first time in 16 years that Seinfeld cast members have gotten back together in NYC at Tom’s Restaurant. And the “Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee” episode, as well as the halftime commercial, included a quick appearance by Wayne Knight as Newman.
The Plot:
In a brand new episode of “Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee,” Jerry Seinfeld picks up his “best friend for almost every single day of the 1990s,” George Costanza in a 1976 American Motors Pacer–a car Jerry describes as perfect for Costanza since it “doesn’t work, looks ridiculous and falls apart.” The duo ride together to the legendary Tom’s Restaurant (aka Monk’s Cafe) for a cup of coffee and some famous Seinfeld banter, when they’re interrupted by a crazed Newman.
The 30 second Need for Speed trailer DreamWorks Pictures aired during the 2014 Super Bowl was all about the action. Characters – unless they had four tires and a souped-up engine – weren’t important in the preview piece screened during the Big Game. In fact, the only dialogue heard was Aaron Paul’s “Got anything faster?” line. But for those who want more from their Need for Speed film than just fast cars, the studio also released an extended trailer with less action and more talking.
Need for Speed opens in theaters on March 14, 2014.
The Plot:
DreamWorks Pictures’ Need for Speed marks an exciting return to the great car culture films of the 1960s and ’70s, when the authenticity of the world brought a new level of intensity to the action on-screen. Tapping into what makes the American myth of the open road so appealing, the story chronicles a near-impossible cross-country journey for our heroes — one that begins as a mission for revenge, but proves to be one of redemption. Based on the most successful racing video game franchise ever with over 140 million copies sold, Need for Speed captures the freedom and excitement of the game in a real-world setting while bringing to life the passion for the road that has made our love of cars so timeless.
The film centers around Tobey Marshall (Paul), a blue-collar mechanic who races muscle cars on the side in an unsanctioned street-racing circuit. Struggling to keep his family-owned garage afloat, he reluctantly partners with the wealthy and arrogant ex-NASCAR driver Dino Brewster (Dominic Cooper). But just as a major sale to car broker Julia Maddon (Imogen Poots) looks like it will save Tobey’s shop, a disastrous race allows Dino to frame Tobey for a crime he didn’t commit, and sending Tobey to prison while Dino expands his business out West.
Two years later, Tobey is released and set on revenge — but he knows his only chance to take down his rival Dino is to defeat him in the high-stakes race known as De Leon — the Super Bowl of underground racing. However, to get there in time, Tobey will have to run a high-octane, action-packed gauntlet that includes dodging pursuing cops coast-to-coast as well as contending with a dangerous bounty Dino has put out on his car. With the help of his loyal crew and the surprisingly resourceful Julia, Tobey defies odds at every turn and proves that even in the flashy world of exotic supercars, the underdog can still finish first.
President Snow (Donald Sutherland, left) and Plutarch Heavensbee (Philip Seymour Hoffman, right) in 'The Hunger Games: Catching Fire' (Photo Credit: Murray Close/Lionsgate)One of the projects Oscar-winner Philip Seymour Hoffman was involved with prior to his death from a drug overdose on Sunday, February 2, 2014 was the final film of The Hunger Games franchise. The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 was finished, however Hoffman was not finished filming his scenes from Mockingjay Part 2 when he was found dead in his New York apartment. Hoffman played a supporting role in the series as Head Gamemaker Plutarch Heavensbee, a small but pivotal role, and following the news of his passing Lionsgate issued a statement expressing their condolences:
Philip Seymour Hoffman was a singular talent and one of the most gifted actors of our generation. We’re very fortunate that he graced our Hunger Games family. Losing him in his prime is a tragedy, and we send our deepest condolences to Philip’s family.”
And Hoffman’s Hunger Games director Francis Lawrence joined with Hunger Games author Suzanne Collins, producers Nina Jacobson and Jon Kilik, and actress Jennifer Lawrence to issue this statement:
Words cannot convey the devastating loss we are all feeling right now. Philip was a wonderful person and an exceptional talent, and our hearts are breaking. Our deepest thoughts and condolences go out to his family.”
It doesn’t appear the role will be recast or that the next film will be delayed because of Hoffman’s death. Mockingjay Part 1 is still aiming for a November 2, 2014 theatrical release.
Kiefer Sutherland stars in '24: Live Another Day' (Photo Credit: FOX)
Fox teased Super Bowl viewers with tiny 10-second snippets during the first three quarters of the game before finally showed off the real trailer for 24: Live Another Day. The new Fox event series brings back Kiefer Sutherland as Jack Bauer but this time takes the action to London.
The series is set to premiere on May 5, 2014.
In addition to Kiefer Sutherland, the cast includes Benjamin Bratt, William Devane, Kim Raver, Mary Lynn Rajskub, Yvonne Strahovski, Giles Matthey, and Gbenga Akinnagbe.
The Plot: Set and shot in London, the suspenseful event series once again will follow the exploits of heroic agent Jack Bauer (Sutherland). Four years ago, Jack was a fugitive from justice. Now an exile, he nevertheless is willing to risk his life and freedom to avert yet another global disaster.
If you’re a Denver Broncos fan, the 2014 Super Bowl isn’t going to go down in history as one of your favorite games. Fortunately, between the Bruno Mars/Red Hot Chili Peppers halftime show, the commercials, and the movie trailers, there were distractions to turn Broncos’ fans attention away from Peyton Manning’s interceptions and the Seattle Seahawks’ complete domination of the Broncos’ offense.
Among the studios hoping to build up hype for their films was Sony Pictures with a new trailer for The Amazing Spider-Man 2 starring Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, and Jamie Foxx.
The Amazing Spider-Man 2 opens in theaters on May 2, 2014.
The Plot:
We’ve always known that Spider-Man’s most important battle has been within himself: the struggle between the ordinary obligations of Peter Parker and the extraordinary responsibilities of Spider-Man. But in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Peter Parker finds that a greater conflict lies ahead.
It’s great to be Spider-Man (Garfield). For Peter Parker, there’s no feeling quite like swinging between skyscrapers, embracing being the hero, and spending time with Gwen (Stone). But being Spider-Man comes at a price: only Spider-Man can protect his fellow New Yorkers from the formidable villains that threaten the city. With the emergence of Electro, Peter must confront a foe far more powerful than he. And as his old friend, Harry Osborn (Dane DeHaan), returns, Peter comes to realize that all of his enemies have one thing in common: OsCorp.
Shia LaBeouf is out, Mark Wahlberg is in. Megan Fox is nowhere to be seen and instead there’s Sophia Myles. Plus the trailer shows Optimus Prime riding on Grimlock, the leader of the Dinobots. Paramount Pictures debuted the Transformers: Age of Extinction trailer during the Super Bowl’s first half at the two minute warning and immediately followed it up with a premiere online. The studio also released this new photo which seems to have Transformers fans all worked up.
Transformers: Age of Extinction opens in theaters on June 27, 2014. In addition to Wahlberg and Myles, TJ Miller, Titus Welliver, Jack Reynor, Nicola Peltz, Stanley Tucci, Han Geng, and Kelsey Grammer.
