Aaron Paul Learns All About Stunt Driving for ‘Need for Speed’

Need for Speed Theatrical Poster

In this first behind-the-scenes featurette from the action thriller Need for Speed, the movie’s star Aaron Paul (Breaking Bad) learns all about stunt driving and how to avoid hitting the camera person shooting the film. Directed by Scott Waugh, the cast of Need for Speed also includes Dominic Cooper, Imogen Poots, Ramon Rodriguez, Rami Malek, Scott Mescudi, Dakota Johnson, Harrison Gilbertson, and Michael Keaton.

DreamWorks Pictures is releasing Need for Speed in theaters on March 14, 2014.

The Plot:

DreamWorks Pictures’ Need for Speed marks an exciting return to the great car culture films of the 1960s and ’70s, when the authenticity of the world brought a new level of intensity to the action on-screen. Tapping into what makes the American myth of the open road so appealing, the story chronicles a near-impossible cross-country journey for our heroes — one that begins as a mission for revenge but proves to be one of redemption.

Based on the most successful racing video game franchise ever with over 140 million copies sold, Need for Speed captures the freedom and excitement of the game in a real-world setting while bringing to life the passion for the road that has made our love of cars so timeless.

The film centers around Tobey Marshall (Paul), a blue-collar mechanic who races muscle cars on the side in an unsanctioned street-racing circuit. Struggling to keep his family-owned garage afloat, he reluctantly partners with the wealthy and arrogant ex-NASCAR driver Dino Brewster (Cooper). But just as a major sale to car broker Julia Maddon (Poots) looks like it will save Tobey’s shop, a disastrous race allows Dino to frame Tobey for a crime he didn’t commit, and sending Tobey to prison while Dino expands his business out West.

Two years later, Tobey is released and set on revenge — but he knows his only chance to take down his rival Dino is to defeat him in the high-stakes race known as De Leon — the Super Bowl of underground racing. However, to get there in time, Tobey will have to run a high-octane, action-packed gauntlet that includes dodging pursuing cops coast-to-coast as well as contending with a dangerous bounty Dino has put out on his car.

With the help of his loyal crew and the surprisingly resourceful Julia, Tobey defies odds at every turn and proves that even in the flashy world of exotic supercars, the underdog can still finish first.

Disney Jr Renews Doc McStuffins, Sofia, and Jake and the Never Land Pirates

Sofia the First

Sofia the First and Doc McStuffins have both been picked up for third seasons by Disney Junior while Jake and the Never Land Pirates has received a fourth season order. The three renewed series rank in the top 10 in cable shows for kids two through five years old.

Sofia the First, Doc McStuffins and Jake and the Never Land Pirates do what Disney does best — tell great stories with humor and heart,” said Nancy Kanter, Disney Junior Worldwide Executive Vice President, Original Programming and General Manager. “We’ve seen these series connect with our audience around the world and across platforms in meaningful ways, and we have many more stories to tell. We look forward to developing new narratives that will put our charismatic princess Sofia, aspiring doctor Doc, and inspiring hero Jake into exciting new situations and locales.”

Doc McStuffins Plot:

Disney Junior’s animated series Doc McStuffins tells the story of a nurturing six-year-old girl who can talk to the stuffed animals and toys that she cares for in her playhouse clinic. When Doc puts on her stethoscope, something magical happens; toys, dolls and stuffed animals come to life and she can communicate with all of them, including the toys belonging to her friends and other neighborhood kids.

Jake and the Never Land Pirates Plot:

Jake and the Never Land Pirates is a music-filled interactive treasure hunt that introduces a crew of kid pirates — leader Jake and pals Izzy and Cubby — and follows their Never Land adventures as they work to outwit two infamous characters, the one and only Captain Hook and Mr. Smee, from Disney’s classic Peter Pan.

Each episode features two 11-minute adventures as Jake and team and their lookout parrot, Skully, sail on the good ship Bucky, miles from their Pirate Island hideout on a lost treasure hunt. Along the way, they model teamwork, problem-solving and physical activity as they learn to maneuver around Hook and Smee, earning gold doubloons as they conquer tasks including crossing a muddy swamp, swinging on vines and sliding down waterfalls.

Sofia the First Plot:

Disney Junior’s animated television series Sofia the First is set in the storybook world of Enchancia and tells the story of Princess Sofia, an adventurous little girl who is learning how to adjust to royal life after her mom marries the king and she becomes a princess overnight.

The Top 10 Movies of 2013

Captain Phillips Review
Tom Hanks stars in 'Captain Phillips' (Photo © 2013 Columbia Pictures)

As the holidays come to an end and a new year begins it’s time to look back at a year that had con artists winning critics’ and audiences’ praises, astronauts lost in space, pirates going after a hard-working captain, and a terrifying haunting scaring the movie-going public right out of their seats. So here it is, my choices for the Top Ten Best Films of 2013 that had both audiences and critics cheering and applauding as the credits rolled.

10. THIS IS THE END – Starring James Franco, Seth Rogen, and Jay Baruchel
Spending the End of Days trapped in James Franco’s new house in L.A. with earthquakes, hellfire, and a very upset Emma Watson wielding an ax demanding food and water, This Is The End had the most laugh-out-loud moments in a comedy this year (as well as quite a few surprise cameos).

9. 12 YEARS A SLAVE – Starring Chiwetel Ejiofor, Michael Fassbender and Benedict Cumberbatch
Based on a shocking true story of a free black man who’s kidnapped from New York and sold into slavery down in the South, 12 Years a Slave captures the horrors of slavery and has two stand-out performances by Chiwetel Ejiofor as Solomon, the enslaved free man who struggles not just to survive but to hold onto his dignity, and Michael Fassbender as the malicious plantation and slave owner. Both are worthy of Oscar consideration.

Jared Leto Wins Virtuosos Award

8. DALLAS BUYERS CLUB – Starring Matthew McConaughey, Jared Leto and Jennifer Garner
One of the most impressive things about Dallas Buyers Club is how both Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto disappear into their roles and are almost unrecognizable. They are sure to be recognized with Oscar nominations in 2014 for their performances in this dramatic film which tells the true story of cowboy Ron Woodroof, a heterosexual man who in 1985 contracted the HIV virus and found a way to get around the established medical experts to get dying AIDS patients the drugs they needed to help fight the disease. Dallas Buyers Club also wonderfully captures the fear and prejudice that most of the public had about the disease at a time when many were dying from it, and no one was sure how to treat it.

7. THE HOBBIT: THE DESOLATION OF SMAUG – Starring Martin Freeman, Ian McKellen and Orlando Bloom
The second installment of The Hobbit trilogy is filled with fast action, solid performances, and hands-down the best CGI dragon to ever grace the big screen. Still not in the same league as the Lord of the Rings films, this Hobbit movie is every bit the adventure Mr. Bilbo Baggins was told to expect if he joined the Dwarves quest.

6. THE HUNGER GAMES: CATCHING FIRE – Starring Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson
A sequel that outshines and outdoes the original film in every way with its strong performances, wonderful set designs, and bigger, faster, more suspenseful action scenes.

5. AMERICAN HUSTLE – Starring Christian Bale and Amy Adams
A quirky, original comedy/drama with two stand-out performances by Christian Bale and Amy Adams, playing con artists who end up working for the FBI while trying to stay out of prison. This is the film to beat at the Oscars this year.

Ron Livingston, John Brotherton, Lily Taylor and Patrick Wilson in 'The Conjuring'

4. THE CONJURING – Starring Vera Farmiga, Patrick Wilson and Lili Taylor
Finally, a horror film with first-rate scares! The Conjuring‘s a chilling, nerve-racking, terrifying movie that is destined to rank near the top of the list of scariest films of all time, right up there with such horror greats as The Shining and The Exorcist.

3. GRAVITY – Starring Sandra Bullock and George Clooney
Flawlessly directed by Alfonso Cuaron and featuring Sandra Bullock’s best performance since The Blind Side, this roller-coaster, science fiction thriller about two astronauts stranded in space with no communication to Earth and a limited amount of oxygen is one of the best films of the year and is also groundbreaking movie-making with its stunning use of 3D. It’s a visually breathtaking piece of movie magic.

2. SHORT TERM 12 – Starring Brie Larson, John Gallagher Jr. and Frantz Turner
Short Term 12 is a powerful, touching film that never feels false. Brie Larson delivers a fantastic breakthrough performance as Grace, a 20-something counselor at a foster care facility dealing with some of the toughest cases of her career. This small independent film had both critics and audiences mesmerized.

1. CAPTAIN PHILLIPS – Starring Tom Hanks and Barkhad Abdi
Riveting and masterfully directed by Paul Greengrass, Captain Phillips is a compelling film with the best performance by Tom Hanks since Saving Private Ryan. The last scene in the movie is incredibly moving, and perhaps the finest piece of acting Hanks has ever delivered on screen. It’s without a doubt the Best Picture of the year.

What do you think of the official poster for the 2014 Oscars? This year’s host Ellen DeGeneres is featured front and center, along with a coveted golden statuette.

DeGeneres will be handling hosting duties for the second time when the 86th Academy Awards take place on March 2, 2014. Nominees will be revealed on Thursday, January 16th.

Jason Bateman’s a Real Jerk in the New ‘Bad Words’ Trailer

Jason Bateman directs and stars in Bad Words, an R-rated comedy about a 40-year-old who uses a loophole in the rules in order to enter a spelling bee. Focus Features is offering up a Green Band trailer (okay for most audiences) featuring mostly Bateman and a little Kathryn Hahn.

The cast also includes Alison Janney and Phillip Baker Hall.

The Plot: Jason Bateman makes his directorial debut with the subversive comedy, Bad Words. Bateman stars as Guy Trilby, a 40-year-old who finds a loophole in the rules of the National Quill Spelling Bee and decides to cause trouble by hijacking the competition. Contest officials, outraged parents, and overly ambitious 8th graders are no match for Guy, as he ruthlessly crushes their dreams of victory and fame.

As a reporter attempts to discover his true motivation, Guy finds himself forging an unlikely alliance with a competitor: awkward 10-year-old Chaitanya (Rohan Chand of Homeland), who is completely unfazed by Guy’s take-no-prisoners approach to life.

Intelligence Premieres to Huge Numbers

Intelligence Series Premiere Date

CBS’s new sci-fi/dramatic series Intelligence proved to be a big ratings earner for the network. According to CBS, 16.59 million viewers tuned in to check out the new series, earning it the title of most watched new drama series premiere of the season. CBS says Intelligence attracted more adults between 25 and 54 than any drama in that time period (9-10pm on Tuesdays) since September 24, 2013. Ratings for the series premiere were helped by a new episode of NCIS which aired immediately prior to the debut of Intelligence and which nabbed 20.65 million viewers (its largest audience since March 5, 2013). Following Intelligence at the 10pm time slot was Person of Interest which also earned the #1 spot in its slot by attracting 12.11 million viewers.

Next week Intelligence moves to its regular time slot of Mondays at 10pm.

The Plot:

Intelligence is a dramatic thriller starring Josh Holloway as a high-tech intelligence operative enhanced with a super-computer microchip in his brain. With this implant, Gabriel is the first human ever to be connected directly into the global information grid and have complete access to Internet, WiFi, telephone and satellite data. He can hack into any data center and access key intel in the fight to protect the United States from its enemies. Leading the elite government cyber-security agency created to support him is Director Lillian Strand (Marg Helgenberger), a straightforward and efficient boss who oversees the unit’s missions. Strand assigns Riley Neal (Meghan Ory), a Secret Service agent, to protect Gabriel from outside threats, as well as from his appetite for reckless, unpredictable behavior and disregard for protocol. Also on the team is Chris Jameson (Michael Rady), a resourceful federal investigator. The brains behind the design of the chip is Dr. Shenandoah Cassidy (John Billingsley), whose son, Nelson (PJ Byrne), is jealous of Gabriel’s prominent place in his father’s life. As the first supercomputer with a beating heart, Gabriel is the most valuable piece of technology the country has ever created and is the U.S.’s secret weapon.
