NBC Logo

NBC’s making history with Working the Engels, a new comedy series from Katie Ford and Jane Ford. According to the network, Working the Engels will be the first half-hour network comedy to be co-produced by a U.S. and a Canadian broadcaster.

Katie and Jane Ford created and will write the show, which has a 12-episode order from NBC. Andrea Martin (SCTV), Kacey Rohl (Hannibal), Azura Skye (American Horror Story), and Benjamin Arthur (Less Than Kind) star in the comedy with Katie and Jane Ford, Howard Busgang, Tom Nursall, and Noreen Halpern executive producing.

“We’re over the moon thrilled to work with NBC and Shaw Media on this series,” stated Noreen Halpern, President, Halfire-CORE Entertainment. “Katie and Jane Ford have created a laugh-out-loud show, and we’re delighted to have a comedic legend in Andrea Martin, complemented by a trio of rising stars.”

The Plot: The series centers on a family who must band together to keep their heads above water when their father and breadwinner passes away, leaving them a mountain of debt. The Engels must all go to work running Dad’s storefront law firm, with one minor problem — daughter Jenna is the only one who is qualified to practice law.

You Need to Watch This ‘Need for Speed’ Trailer

Aaron Paul stars in Need for Speed Trailer

Breaking Bad fans and/or fans of action films will want to check out this new trailer for DreamWorks Pictures’ Need for Speed based on the video game franchise. In addition to Breaking Bad‘s Aaron Paul, Need for Speed stars Dominic Cooper, Imogen Poots, Ramon Rodriguez, Rami Malek, Scott Mescudi, Dakota Johnson, Harrison Gilbertson, and Michael Keaton.

Directed by Scott Waugh, Need for Speed will open in theaters on March 14, 2014.

The Plot: DreamWorks Pictures’ Need for Speed marks an exciting return to the great car culture films of the 1960s and ’70s, when the authenticity of the world brought a new level of intensity to the action on-screen. Tapping into what makes the American myth of the open road so appealing, the story chronicles a near-impossible cross-country journey for our heroes — one that begins as a mission for revenge, but proves to be one of redemption. Based on the most successful racing video game franchise ever with over 140 million copies sold, Need for Speed captures the freedom and excitement of the game in a real-world setting, while bringing to life the passion for the road that has made our love of cars so timeless.

The film centers around Tobey Marshall (Aaron Paul), a blue-collar mechanic who races muscle cars on the side in an unsanctioned street-racing circuit. Struggling to keep his family-owned garage afloat, he reluctantly partners with the wealthy and arrogant ex-NASCAR driver Dino Brewster (Dominic Cooper). But just as a major sale to car broker Julia Bonet (Imogen Poots) looks like it will save Tobey’s shop, a disastrous race allows Dino to frame Tobey for a crime he didn’t commit, and sending Tobey to prison while Dino expands his business out west.

Two years later, Tobey is released and set on revenge — but he knows his only chance to take down his rival Dino is to defeat him in the high-stakes race known as De Leon — the Super Bowl of underground racing. However, to get there in time, Tobey will have to run a high-octane, action-packed gauntlet that includes dodging pursuing cops coast-to-coast as well as contending with a dangerous bounty Dino has put out on his car. With the help of his loyal crew and the surprisingly resourceful Julia, Tobey defies odds at every turn and proves that even in the flashy world of exotic supercars, the underdog can still finish first.

Anna Gunn and Jacki Weaver Will Star in ‘Gracepoint’

Jacki Weaver

David Tennant now has some company in the new Fox event series Gracepoint based on the U.K.’s popular series Broadchurch. The network’s just announced Anna Gunn (Breaking Bad) and Jacki Weaver (Silver Linings Playbook) have signed on to roles in the drama series that will air during the 2014-2015 season.

The event series is set to start shooting in January with the original series’ creator Chris Chibnall on board as executive producer. Chibnall’s also writing the first episode and James Strong is set to direct. Carolyn Bernstein, Jane Featherstone, Dan Futterman, and Anya Epstein are also executive producing with Futterman and Epstein serving as showrunners.

The Plot:

The gripping crime series follows the tragic and mysterious death of a young boy found dead on an idyllic beach surrounded by rocks and a jutting cliff-face, from where he may have fallen. Although the cause of his death remains unsolved, the picturesque seaside town where the tragedy occurred is at the heart of a major police investigation and a nationwide media frenzy.

Gunn, who won an Emmy Award this year for her role as “Skyler White” on Breaking Bad, will play Detective ELLIE MILLER, a happily married wife and mother who is looking forward to a promised promotion. When the job goes to outsider Detective EMMETT CARVER (Tennant), Ellie is disgruntled – but her disappointment quickly fades in light of tragedy, and she must work her very first murder case with her prickly new partner. As the case progresses, she’ll have to look at her hometown, and those she cares about, through a different prism.

Weaver has been cast as SUSAN WRIGHT, a glowering, mysterious woman who is new to town and lives in the RV park, alone with her dog. She works various cleaning and odd jobs and prefers to remain anonymous, but has a dark history kept fiercely hidden.

Downton Abbey‘s Elizabeth McGovern Narrates Civil War: The Untold Story

Civil War - The Untold Story
Civil War: The Untold Story will air on public television stations in February 2014 with Downton Abbey‘s Elizabeth McGovern narrating the five hour documentary series. According to Great Divide Pictures, the new documentary covers the war through a new perspective, looking at battles that took place in the Western Theater (the lands between the Appalachians and the Mississippi River). Civil War: The Untold Story sets out to uncover the importance of the often ignored battles fought in Shiloh, Vicksburg, Chickamauga, and Atlanta.

“The film is not just about who we were then. It’s about who we are now,” said producer Chris Wheeler. “In a nation arguably as divided today as we were 150 years ago, Civil War: The Untold Story is a compelling, relevant program that we believe will strike a powerful chord with Americans today.”

Civil War: The Untold Story – The Episodes

Episode One – “Bloody Shiloh”
With the 1860 election of anti-slavery candidate Abraham Lincoln, thirteen states from the South secede and form the Confederate States of America. Union military leaders, along with Lincoln himself, realize that ending the rebellion rests on controlling the Mississippi River. In February 1862, Union forces, led by an obscure general named Ulysses S. Grant, establish a foothold in southern Tennessee near a simple log structure known as “Shiloh Church.” On April 6, 1862, a Confederate force of over 40-thousand, led by General Albert Sidney Johnston, launch a surprise attack on Grant. The fighting in the hellish terrain surrounding Shiloh is some of the most brutal of the entire war. By day’s end, victory is in sight for the attacking Confederates. But Johnston has been struck in the leg by a bullet, and bleeds to death in 20 minutes. The death of Johnston is a harbinger of a great change that will soon sweep over “Bloody Shiloh.”

Episode Two – “A Beacon of Hope”
In the disaster at Shiloh, Union General Ulysses S. Grant sees victory. On the night of April 6, 1862, Grant’s beleaguered army along the Tennessee River is reinforced. The next morning, Grant’s counterattack leads to victory. The defeated Confederate force of 40-thousand retreats south to Corinth, Mississippi. At Shiloh, the Confederates lose arguably their best opportunity to change the outcome of the war. The shocking combined casualties of 24-thousand men is more than in all the wars fought to that date in the United States. Many of the nearly 4 million slaves across the South see the war as an opportunity to seize their own destiny. Thousands of escaping slaves, dubbed ‘contrabands’, seek refuge with Union forces advancing into the South. At Corinth, Mississippi, the Union army sets up a ‘contraband camp.’ The former slaves begin building a community that includes a school, hospital, and church. As thousands of slaves flee northward, the question asked all over America is this: are they still slaves or are they now free? In a cottage overlooking Washington DC, Abraham Lincoln begins drafting a “proclamation” whose message will boldly answer that question.

Episode Three – “River of Death”
Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation not only frees slaves in the rebelling states. It changes the war from one of reunification, to one of ending slavery. The Emancipation Proclamation also gives African Americans freedom to fight. By war’s end, some 200,000 will enlist. In truth, Lincoln’s proclamation is an empty promise without the power of the United States Army to enforce it. In 1863, Ulysses S. Grant begins a campaign to take Vicksburg, Mississippi, a Confederate citadel overlooking a strategic section of the lower Mississippi River. In May, Grant begins laying siege to the city of 4500. Mary Loughborough is one of the many terrified civilians who have dug caves into the hillsides for protection. Clutching her 2-year old daughter, Mary “endeavored by constant prayer to prepare myself for the sudden death I was almost certain awaited me.” On July 4, 1863 – the day after Pickett’s disastrous charge at Gettysburg – the Confederates surrender Vicksburg to Grant. With the Mississippi River now under Union control, the campaign moves eastward to Chattanooga, Tennessee, a rail center that Lincoln considers to be as important as the Confederate capital of Richmond. Eight miles south, along the Chickamauga – a creek the Cherokee call “the river of death” – Union and Confederate forces clash in what will become the biggest battle of the Western Theater.

Episode Four – “Death Knell of the Confederacy”
September 19, 1863. The first day of the Battle of Chickamauga ends in a bloody draw. On the next day, the battle is determined by one of the biggest blunders of the Civil War. Miscommunication, confusion, and fatigue with Union General William Rosecrans and his generals have left a gap in the Union line more than a quarter mile wide. James Longstreet’s force of 11,000 from the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia, pour through the gap and split the Union army in two. Rosecrans and his beaten army escape to Chattanooga. Chickamauga’s combined casualties of 34,000 are only topped by the carnage at Gettysburg. In October, Rosecrans is replaced by U.S. Grant, who immediately plans an offensive. In November 1863, Grant routes the Confederate stronghold just outside Chattanooga. As they escape southward into Georgia, a Confederate officer calls the devastating defeat: “the death knell of the Confederacy.”

Episode Five – “With Malice Towards None”
In the spring of 1864, General William Tecumseh Sherman’s force of 100-thousand men marches from Chattanooga toward Atlanta, Georgia, the industrial hub of the Deep South. Twenty miles north of Atlanta, Sherman’s army is soundly defeated at Kennesaw Mountain. Sherman’s defeat combined with Grant’s stalemate in Virginia, enrages a Northern electorate already weary of war. The presidential election is in November, and Abraham Lincoln’s chances for a second term are dwindling by the day. The Democrats nominate George McClellan. The party’s platform calls for a negotiated peace with the Confederacy in which slaveholders will be allowed to keep their property. If McClellan is elected, Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation will almost certainly be struck down. Though victorious at Kennesaw Mountain, the outnumbered Confederate Army falls back to a defensive position at Atlanta. After 6 weeks of bloody conflicts around Atlanta, Sherman wires Washington: “Atlanta is ours and fairly won.” For the first time in the war, many in the North now believe victory can be achieved. Eight weeks later, the president defeats McClellan in a landslide. After the election, Sherman begins his March to the Sea. The largely unopposed march across Georgia to Savannah is a psychological blow to the Confederacy, and a stunning conclusion to the Western Theater.

Dr. Jenn Berman will help out couples in high-profile, rocky relationships during season four of VH1 Couples Therapy premiering in January 2014. Season four will feature Taylor Armstrong (RHoBH) & John Bluher, Farrah Abraham (Teen Mom), Ghostface Killah (Rapper) & Kelsey Nykole, Whitney Mixter (The Real L Word) & Sada Bettencourt (The Real L Word) and Jon Gosselin (Jon & Kate + Eight) & Liz Janetta who will, according to VH1, be talking about issues never discussed over the previous three seasons of the show.

The Details:

Relationships are hard enough, but imagine the pressure of having your hook ups, “bumps” on the relationship road and breakups as fodder for the tabloids. More and more, it seems couples whose matters of the heart play out in the public eye are calling it quits and throwing in the towel on their relationships. Why is it so tough for these couples to stay together? Looking to shed light on the issue, VH1 will examine the complicated and often misunderstood world of high-profile relationships with VH1 Couples Therapy.

VH1 Couples Therapy is the first reality show to examine firsthand the real life experiences of a group of buzzed-about couples. For some of these couples, living under constant scrutiny from the media and fans makes it increasingly hard for them to stay together and VH1 wants to see why they can’t seem to go the distance. These four-and-a-half couples, at a crossroads in their relationships, will join together for over 2 weeks as they undergo intensive relationship therapy. Under the guidance of Dr. Jenn Berman, a nationally renowned relationship therapist, the couples will participate in group and individual therapy along with relationship exercises out in the “real world” to see if they can rekindle the love they used to have for one another — or if it’s simply time for them to move on.
