Talk about a match made in heaven. Filmmaker Guillermo del Toro (Pacific Rim) is directing this season’s opening couch gag for The Simpsons‘ Treehouse of Horror episode. The Treehouse of Horror is a much-anticipated annual event, and del Toro’s couch gag opener will feature monsters and classic horror movie characters from throughout history.

The Treehouse of Horror XXIV airs on Sunday, October 6, 2013 at 8pm on Fox.

Details on The Treehouse of Horror:

The first of three spine-tingling tales in the annual “Treehouse of Horror” episode, Homer travels around Springfield wreaking havoc in a rhyming take on a popular children’s tale. In “Dead and Shoulders” Bart is beheaded during a kite accident, his head is attached to Lisa’s body and they must live together as one.

The final frightening tale, “Freaks no Geeks,” features Mr. Burns’ traveling circus, The Burnsum and Bailey Circus, which has stopped in Springfieldland in the 1930s. Trapeze artist Marge and Strong Man Homer are performers, and things go awry when circus freak Moe starts to make advances towards Marge.

First Look: ‘Need for Speed’ Trailer with Aaron Paul

Need for Speed Teaser Trailer

Aaron Paul is all over the news right now as Breaking Bad draws to a close, and DreamWorks Pictures is capitalizing on his popularity with the release of the first teaser trailer for Need for Speed. Directed by Scott Waugh and based on the EA video game, Need for Speed will be racing into theaters on March 14, 2014.

The Plot:

DreamWorks Pictures’ Need for Speed marks an exciting return to the great car culture films of the 1960s and 70s, when the authenticity of the world brought a new level of intensity to the action on-screen. Tapping into what makes the American myth of the open road so appealing, the story chronicles a near-impossible cross-country journey for our heroes — one which begins as a mission for revenge but proves to be one of redemption. Based on the most successful racing video game franchise ever with over 140 million copies sold, Need for Speed captures the freedom and excitement of the game in a real-world setting, while bringing to life the passion for the road that has made our love of cars so timeless.

The film centers around Tobey Marshall (Aaron Paul), a blue-collar mechanic who races muscle-cars on the side in an unsanctioned street-racing circuit. Struggling to keep his family-owned garage afloat, he reluctantly partners with the wealthy and arrogant ex-NASCAR driver Dino Brewster (Dominic Cooper). But just as a major sale to car broker Julia Bonet (Imogen Poots) looks like it will save Tobey’s shop, a disastrous race allows Dino to frame Tobey for a crime he didn’t commit, sending Tobey to prison while Dino expands his business out west.

Two years later, Tobey is released and set on revenge — but he knows his only chance to take down his rival Dino is to defeat him in the high-stakes race known as De Leon—the Super Bowl of underground racing. However to get there in time, Tobey will have to run a high-octane, action-packed gauntlet that includes dodging pursuing cops coast-to-coast as well as contending with a dangerous bounty Dino has put out on his car. With the help of his loyal crew and the surprisingly resourceful Julia, Tobey defies odds at every turn and proves that even in the flashy world of exotic supercars, the underdog can still finish first.

‘Person of Interest’ Season 3 Premiere Recap and Review

Person of Interest Season 3 Review
Michael Emerson, Kevin Chapman, Taraji P Henson, and Jim Caviezel star in 'Person of Interest' (Photo © 2013 CBS Broadcasting Inc.)

“I’m sorry, are you guys closed?” asks John Reese (Jim Caviezel) who’s just deliberately walked into a diamond transaction gone bad between the Russian mob, corrupt commandos, and a sailor who’s trapped in the middle in the season three opener of the crime drama, Person of Interest.

The Machine’s whereabouts still remain unknown, but it continues to generate the numbers of people who are in danger and are either victim or perpetrator of an upcoming crime. Reese and Mr. Finch (Michael Emerson) are still working together to save as many people as they can, aided by their new ally, Shaw (Sarah Shahi), an ex-assassin who’s still having trouble only shooting to wound instead of killing. This time the number is of a sailor on shore leave in New York City whose best friend seems to have a knack of getting the both of them in trouble. When he goes missing, the sailor is nearly taken by commandos who are involved in smuggling diamonds. It’s up to Reese, Finch, Shaw, and Detective Fusco (Kevin Chapman) to save both sailors from angry killer commandos and a few greedy Russian mobsters.

Meanwhile, Detective Carter (Taraji P. Henson) has been demoted to a beat cop by HR which still has control of the NYPD and is doing business with the Russian mob. Down but by no means out, Carter on her own time helps Reese and Finch whenever she can and continues her own private investigation into those who may be part of HR and who could be at the head of it.

Suspenseful and engaging, Person of Interest season three picks up right where season two left off. The series still has a strong cloak & dagger feel and style to it, with two great leads. Jim Caviezel is perfect as John Reese, the “Man in the Black Suit” who works with Finch to save those in life-threatening trouble. Caviezel’s cold, icy, and at times half-smirk delivery of his lines to the villains in the series is reminiscent of another famous secret agent who has a license to kill and whose operative number is 007.

Michael Emerson is the moral and emotional center of the show as Mr. Harold Finch, the rich, computer mastermind who sacrificed so much of his personal happiness to protect those he cares about and to help those who would be lost to violent crime if not for him and Reese. The strong chemistry between the two men who have become trusted partners is another strength of the show, but in this episode it’s thrown off a bit with the addition of their new ally, Samantha Shaw (Sarah Shahi), who’s become a series regular. Shahi is well cast as Shaw, the ex-CIA assassin who’s teamed up with the guys since she’s fresh out of friends and a job, considering her last employer tried to kill her several times last season. However, with Shaw backing up Reese in the field, the scenes between Harold and John have been cut back to considerably less in this episode. Here’s hoping the addition of Shaw doesn’t permanently throw off the wonderful balance of the series’ tone and Reese/Finch scene time.

Still, with great action scenes, suspenseful shoot-outs, sharp dialogue, and more dangerous enemies coming out of the shadows, Person of Interest season three is sizing up to be one of the must-not-miss shows this television season.

Don’t even bother looking for a lip sync contest that beats what Jimmy Fallon, Joseph Gordon Levitt, and Stephen Merchant laid down on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. Who won? Who cares when the battle was so completely epic.

In case you’re keeping track: Stephen Merchant performed “Boom! Shake The Room” by DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince and “Single Ladies” by Beyonce. Jimmy Fallon chose “Don’t You Want Me” by The Human League and “Take On Me” by A-ha. And Joseph Gordon Levitt performed “Tiny Dancer” by Elton John and “Superbass” by Nicki Minaj.

We also want to thank Army Wives’ passionate legion of fans and everyone involved with the series: ABC Studios, Mark Gordon and Jeff Melvoin, Tanya Biank, every single cast member, as well as the crew and community of Charleston, South Carolina. Without their dedication, effort and loyalty, Army Wives’ seven wonderful seasons would not have been possible; and for that we are very grateful.”

Stephen Colbert Brags About Beating Jon Stewart and ‘The Daily Show’

“I won! I won, Jon! In your face!!!”

Stephen Colbert broke Jon Stewart’s 10-year reign by taking home the Emmy in the Outstanding Variety Series category on Sunday, September 22, 2013, and on September 24th, the two were face-to-face on The Colbert Report to discuss Colbert’s victory. Colbert kicked off his show by apologizing for thanking anyone but himself and then called up Stewart to brag about his win. But the call was short-lived as Stewart showed up on stage and congratulated Colbert on taking home the Emmy this year.

Colbert kept trying to convince Stewart that he was not, in fact, fine with losing this year, but Stewart showered Colbert with compliments – something Stephen wasn’t ready to accept. However, Stewart had a very good reason (in addition to their friendship) for being happy about The Colbert Report‘s win…

The field of more than 100 has been narrowed to just three finalists in NBC’s “Chicago Fire Top Dog” contest and voting is now open at Today.com/TopDog to select the winner. The three finalists were revealed on September 24, 2013’s Today show, with the three heroic dogs joining their firehouse companions and Chicago Fire stars Taylor Kinney and Jesse Spencer to greet the crowd.

The winner of the contest will be announced on October 1st, earning the title “Chicago Fire Top Dog” as well as a cameo role on primetime series. Here’s the scoop on the three dogs who made the final cut:

From Station 111 in Indianapolis is Dempsey, a 2½-year-old Boxer/Mastiff mix who was intentionally set on fire by a juvenile in 2011.

The fire burned all four paws, legs, his underbelly and part of his tail. In seeing his story on the news, Dempsey was adopted by a public educator thinking his battle scars could be used to show kids and adults the damage fire can do if played with or used inappropriately. He has gone through nine surgeries to improve his mobility and ease his pain.

At Station 2 in Jacksonville, Illinois, Smokey — a Labrador Retriever mix — was inside a home that was engulfed in flames. Eventually, her lifeless body was brought out and, with the aid of a veterinarian, was kept on oxygen 24/7 for three days, hand fed and nurtured to what a six-week old healthy puppy should be. Now she is a training tool for the community as the firefighters have taught her to stop, drop and roll.

A Dalmatian named after the iconic Los Angeles street where his firehouse is based, Wilshire became part of the Station 10 family when his original family could no longer keep him. Wilshire can stop, drop and roll, as well as crawl and dial 911.

He performs fire and life safety demonstrations for kids and families. Not only does he engage in other safety behaviors as well, Wilshire also teaches kids about the importance of healthy eating and exercise by lifting a 100 lb. dumbbell and running on a treadmill.
