Kelly Rowland and Paulina Rubio Discuss ‘The X Factor’

The women will be ruling the judging panel on this upcoming season of Fox’s The X Factor, and Simon Cowell’s actually fine with that. During the summer 2013 Television Critics Association press event, Cowell said that the idea of being placed on a panel alongside three female judges is working exactly how he anticipated it would.

“We said at the time it’s a girls’ world at the moment in the music business,” explained Cowell. “So many girls doing so well in the charts, we thought the panel should reflect it…but be careful what you wish for.”

Joining Cowell at the TCA event was returning judge Demi Lovato and The X Factor newbies Kelly Rowland and Paulina Rubio, who talked about being a part of the popular singing competition.

On the final votes and why 3rd or 4th place winners often have a better career than the actual winner:

Kelly Rowland: “It’s actually happened a long time. I remember it even a long time ago, when the ladies and I went up for Star Search years ago, we lost against a Country rock band. You know, it’s just the way, I think, America kind of votes. I think that that’s just sometimes what those voters might be wanting at that time, and [there’s] nothing wrong with that. But, I mean, we were completely R&B, got up there, hip-hop, ‘Yeah, one, two, one, two,’ and lost – and then went on to have great careers. So, it happened. I think that, no matter how it happens, I still think that we gain respect because we have great artists that have come to perform on the show and shown America their best and they’re proud of it. And then we get something special out of it later.”

On approaching the role of a judge:

Kelly Rowland: “Definitely constructive when it comes to criticism, you know, because you know what that ‘no’ feels like, especially when it’s just the no flat-out and no one gives you a reason why. I think that watching Demi even last year, every time she told someone why she wasn’t a fan of what they did, she would give them a reason why and tell them what they should work on.

I’m thinking that’s really constructive because then you leave someone with a hope that they can go away and have something to work on, and it makes them better. And I think that’s what I really love about the panel this year is, you know, Simon may tell someone no five times, but they come back because they believe it’s okay, that sometimes we’ll get a no. But we believe in a lot of people that come up as well.”

On the return to the original X Factor categories of Boys, Girls, Over 25s, and Groups:

Kelly Rowland: “I know, for me, it didn’t matter which category I got. I was just going to be happy because there’s a winner in each one. Do you know what I mean? So I just felt like, ‘Oh, well, we’ll just take this. It will be easy. This will be great.'”

On her background and why she wanted to be an The X Factor judge:

Paulina Rubio: “Well, first of all, I started with a recording deal when I was seven years old. That along the way gave me a little perspective, and I wanted to transmit that to the new talent. When Simon first called my people, I was really, really excited. I was coming from doing The Voice kids, which we broke all of the ratings in NBC Telemundo. And then when he invited me to come to this new journey, I was really, really excited.

We have a lot of fun right now. The three girls and I bonded immediately. We agree sometimes with Simon. We don’t sometimes. That’s part of the chemistry and the yin and yang that we want in the panel table. And then when I met Andrew [Llinares[ and Robert [Wade] and the rest of the producers, we thought that we were going to be friends and we were going to be partners, and that’s what we are doing now.”

On her Telemundo experience:

Paulina Rubio: “I’m always really positive about everything that I do, and most of the things that I have [done] being with The Voice kids, it’s unpredictable. The kids are between 10 and 17. So one of my two passions in life is kids, as I’m a mom of a two year old, and music, which I’ve been doing it all my life. So it was instantly a yes for me when Simon invited me to this project.”

New Artist Spotlight: Sundy Best

Nick Jamerson and Kris Bentley of Sundy Best Music Profile

They come from Appalachia. Their friendship dates back to elementary school. Their voices blend like bourbon and soda. Listening to their debut album on eOne Music, Door Without a Screen, produced by Coleman Saunders and released Aug. 2, you get the feeling that Kris Bentley and Nick Jamerson were born to make music together.

Apparently, they were also destined to represent their beloved home state to the world through their songs. Co-writing every track, they visit the theme of Kentucky’s wonders repeatedly, always with a twinge of nostalgia but also from a variety of perspectives. “Home” captures the ache of a country boy stuck in the city, with only memories of running “barefoot up a holler, in the shadows of the pines.” “Mountain Parkway” is a panorama of images seen through the windows during a cruise through their backwoods paradise. Then, on “Prestonsburg,” the very first lyrics declare, “I just got off the parkway,” and this time the singer is back home, where he — and maybe all of us — belong.

What else do Bentley and Jamerson share? Each began singing in church as kids; aside from a short-lived Christian rock band, that was their only musical outlet for years. Both were active in sports through high school and college — Bentley played basketball, Jamerson excelled at football. They enjoy shifting tempos to underscore different parts of songs. And they love acoustic textures. From scratchy banjos to sad or stompin’ fiddles, their music sounds the way a weather-worn barn looks — rough, sweet and tactile, all at the same time.

IN THEIR OWN WORDS

MUSICAL HERO

BOTH: “Tom Petty or Bob Seger. Chris Stapleton – fellow East Kentuckian – is a beast too!”

DREAM DUET PARTNER

BOTH: “Female – Sheryl Crow. Male – Chris Stapleton.”

PHRASE YOU SAY OVER AND OVER

BOTH: “Do what?”

FAVORITE MODE OF TRANSPORTATION

BOTH: “Roller blades.”

PET PEEVE

BOTH: “Bad grammar.”

FIRST GIG

BOTH: “Pikeville, Ken., at a bar called Champs. We drank beer for three hours before it started. They told us it went great.”

Two new series are set to premiere in the next two months, alongside returning shows and new original movies. The network’s also planning its 6th annual “31 Days of Halloween” spook-a-thon featuring 600 hours of theatrical and original films.

The investigators and miners delve further into the mine’s mysterious history revealing new information about the recurring Masonic symbols, Native American presence and the spirit of “Joe,” all while battling the elements in hopes of striking it rich.

This season, they’ve revamped the popular Remote Investigator of Paranormal Activity (RIPA) and brought in a surprise new addition to the team. The Season 2 premiere will be preceded by the 9PM one-hour special, Ghost Mine: Back on the Mountain, hosted by Adam Copeland (Haven), in which the miners and investigators gather ‘round the campfire to reminisce about the highs and lows of last season.

RAGIN CAJUN REDNECK GATORS (ORIGINAL MOVIE PREMIERE)

Premieres Thursday, September 5 at 9PM – Contaminated moonshine dumped in a Louisiana swamp turns the bayou’s gators (and the people who eat them) into deadly mutants. The movie stars Victor Webster (Continuum) and Jordan Hinson (Eureka).

HAVEN (SEASON 4 PREMIERE)

This season, Colin Ferguson returns to Syfy playing William, a handsome mysterious stranger, whose secret agenda leads him to Audrey.

Haven, based on the novella The Colorado Kid from renowned author Stephen King, follows former FBI agent Audrey Parker, who becomes a cop in the small town of Haven, Maine, and soon discovers the town’s many secrets – which also hold the key to unlocking the mysteries of her lost past.

Located 80 miles off the coast of Florida, the four will conduct their own first-person investigation into an abandoned military fort that’s rumored to harbor the ghost of a possible Lincoln assassination conspirator.

Fueled by eyewitness interviews and evidence collected with state-of-the-art equipment, this new season will push our two teams further off the beaten path and self-document harrowing face-to-face encounters with the paranormal in some of America’s darkest and most remote regions. Co-written, directed by and starring George Clooney, The Monuments Men could be one of Sony Pictures’ big Oscar pushes this year. Check out the cast in addition to Clooney: Matt Damon, Jean Dujardin, Bill Murray, John Goodman, Cate Blanchett, Hugh Bonneville, and Bob Balaban. See what I mean? And it’s heading to theaters during the awards season on December 18, 2013.

The Plot:

Based on the true story of the greatest treasure hunt in history, The Monuments Men is a dramatic thriller focusing on an unlikely World War II platoon, tasked by FDR with going into Germany to rescue artistic masterpieces from Nazi thieves and returning them to their rightful owners. It would be an impossible mission: with the art trapped behind enemy lines, and with the German army under orders to destroy everything as the Reich fell, how could these guys – seven museum directors, curators, and art historians, all more familiar with Michelangelo than the M-1 – possibly hope to succeed?

But as the Monuments Men, as they were called, found themselves in a race against time to avoid the destruction of 1000 years of culture, they would risk their lives to protect and defend mankind’s greatest achievements.

‘Brooklyn Nine-Nine’ Preview: Plot, Cast, and Trailer

Andy Samberg and Andre Braugher lead the cast of Fox’s workplace/cop comedy Brooklyn Nine-Nine. The half-hour comedy will premiere on September 17, 2013.

Andy Samberg stars as Jake Peralta, Andre Braugher plays Ray Holt, Melissa Fumero is Amy Santiago, and Terry Crews is Terry Jeffords. Joe Lo Truglio plays Charles Boyle, Stephanie Beatriz is Rosa Diaz, and Chelsea Peretti stars as Gina Linetti.

The Plot: Brooklyn Nine-Nine is a new single-camera ensemble comedy about what happens when a talented, but carefree, detective gets a new captain with a lot to prove. Detective Jake Peralta is a good enough cop that he’s never had to work that hard or follow the rules too closely. Perhaps because he has the best arrest record among his colleagues, he’s been enabled – if not indulged – throughout his entire career. That is, until the precinct gets a new commanding officer, Captain Ray Holt, who reminds this hotshot cop to respect the badge.

Jake may have collared more criminals, but Detective Amy Santiago is close behind, and she’s keenly aware of how many arrests she needs to close the gap. Amy grew up with seven brothers who were all cops. She’s the first girl in the family to put on a police uniform, and suffice it to say: she’s extremely competitive…about everything.

Also working cases in Brooklyn’s 99th precinct is Sergeant Terry Jeffords, a linebacker of a man who’s lost his nerve, not because he’s a wimp, but because a year ago, his wife had twin baby girls – Cagney and Lacey – and he can’t imagine not seeing them grow up. Detective Charles Boyle, who idolizes Jake, is the precinct’s workhorse; he’s not that brilliant, he’s not physically gifted, but he tries harder than anyone else. Charles pines for Detective Rosa Diaz, with whom he stands no chance at all. Rosa is simultaneously tough, sexy and scary as hell. She’s vocally opinionated about everything.

Cleaning up everyone’s mess is Gina Linetti, the eccentric, civilian office manager who somehow gets involved in everyone’s business. Together, these tightly knit – or is it tightly wound? – cops interrogate suspects, arrest perps and solve murders. But, ultimately, Brooklyn Nine-Nine is a workplace comedy that’s not really about the job. It’s about the men and women behind the badge – singing karaoke, grabbing a beer and hitting on each other – all while protecting the fine people of Brooklyn.
