AMC Wants Even More Zombies to Invade the Small Screen

It’s all still in the early stages but it appears AMC is developing a The Walking Dead companion series. The new series will be executive produced by Robert Kirkman, Gale Anne Hurd, and David Alpert and AMC’s aiming for a 2015 premiere of the new zombie show.

“Building on the success of the most popular show on television for adults 18-49 is literally a no-brainer,” stated Charlie Collier, AMC’s president and general manager. “We look forward to working with Robert, Gale and Dave again as we develop an entirely new story and cast of characters. It’s a big world and we can’t wait to give fans another unforgettable view of the zombie apocalypse.”

“After 10 years of writing the comic book series and being so close to the debut of our fourth, and in my opinion, best season of the TV series, I couldn’t be more thrilled about getting the chance to create a new corner of The Walking Dead universe,” added Kirkman. “The opportunity to make a show that isn’t tethered by the events of the comic book, and is truly a blank page, has set my creativity racing.”

The Walking Dead will kick off season four on October 13, 2013.

‘The Blacklist’ Season 3 Preview: Cast Interviews and Plot Details

The Blacklist TV Series Info

NBC’s one-hour drama The Blacklist starring James Spader as Raymond “Red” Reddington and Megan Boone as Elizabeth “Liz” Keen returns for season three on September 24, 2015. Ahead of its debut, here’s a look at what’s in store for Red and Liz.

The cast also includes Diego Klattenhoff as Donald Ressler, Ryan Eggold as Tom Keen, Harry Lennix as Harold Cooper, Amir Arison as Aram Mojtabai, Mozhan Marnò as Samar Navabi, and Hisham Tawfiq as Dembe Zuma.

The Synopsis: For decades, ex-government agent Raymond “Red” Reddington (James Spader) has been one of the FBI’s Most Wanted fugitives. Brokering shadowy deals for criminals across the globe, Red was known by many as “The Concierge of Crime.” Now, he’s mysteriously surrendered to the FBI with an explosive offer: He will help catch a long-thought-dead terrorist, Ranko Zamani, under the condition that he speaks only to Elizabeth “Liz” Keen (Megan Boone), an FBI profiler fresh out of Quantico.

For Liz, it’s going to be one hell of a first day on the job. What follows is a twisting series of events as the race to stop a terrorist begins. What are Red’s true intentions? Why has he chosen Liz, a woman with whom he seemingly has no connection? Does Liz have secrets of her own? Zamani is only the first of many on a list that Red has compiled over the years: a “blacklist” of politicians, mobsters, spies and international terrorists. He will help catch them all… with the caveat that Liz continues to work as his partner. Red will teach Liz to think like a criminal and “see the bigger picture”… whether she wants to or not.

In season three, FBI Agent Elizabeth “Liz” Keen is now a fugitive and on the run with criminal mastermind Raymond “Red” Reddington. With Assistant FBI Director Harold Cooper under investigation, a conflicted Agent Donald Ressler leads the FBI Task Force on a massive manhunt for Liz and Red. As they struggle to stay one step ahead of their former colleagues, Liz immerses herself into Red’s underworld of disreputable contacts and covert operations.

Liz is on an unpredictable journey of self-discovery and all the pieces of her life, including her indefinable relationship with Tom, will be drastically challenged as she continues to believe Red holds all the answers.

Lorne Michaels told the New York Times that Cecily Strong will co-host the Saturday Night Live Weekend Update segment with Seth Meyers until he leaves the show in February to begin hosting the Late Show on NBC. Strong will initially share the Weekend Update desk with Meyers and then eventually take over as the solo host.

Whether or not she’ll solo host this season is still up in the air as Michaels hopes Meyer will be able to return to SNL for just the Weekend Update segments since his late night show doesn’t air on Fridays.

“Cecily, from the first show, was right there,” stated Michaels in his NYT interview. “She exploded.”

NBC also confirmed the addition of six cast members as featured players. With Bill Hader, Jason Sudeikis, and Fred Armisen now gone from the late night series, Beck Bennett, John Milhiser, Kyle Mooney, Mike O’Brien, Noël Wells, and Brooks Wheelan are filling in empty spots as featured players.

Season 39 of SNL kicks off on September 28, 2013 with Tina Fey hosting and Arcade Fire as musical guest.

First Look: Need for Speed Photos

Breaking Bad‘s Aaron Paul stars in DreamWorks Pictures’ Need for Speed based on the popular Electronic Arts video game and directed by Scott Waugh. George Gatins and John Gatins came up with the story and wrote the script, and DreamWorks is aiming to get the video game-inspired movie into theaters on March 14, 2014.

And although we’re still six months away from its opening date, DreamWorks is showing off the first official photos from the film.

The Plot: Based on the most successful racing video game franchise ever with over 140 million copies sold, DreamWorks Pictures’ Need for Speed captures the thrills of the game in a real-world setting. An exciting return to the great car-culture films of the 1960s and ’70s, when authenticity brought a new level of intensity to the action, Need for Speed taps into what makes the American myth of the open road so enticing.

The story chronicles a near-impossible cross-country race against time—one that begins as a mission for revenge, but proves to be one of redemption. In a last attempt to save his struggling garage, blue-collar mechanic Tobey Marshall (Aaron Paul)—who with his team skillfully builds and races muscle cars on the side—reluctantly partners with wealthy, arrogant ex-NASCAR driver Dino Brewster (Dominic Cooper). Just as a major sale to car broker Julia Bonet (Imogen Poots) looks like it will save the business, a disastrous, unsanctioned race results in Dino framing Tobey for manslaughter.

Two years later and fresh out of prison, Tobey is set on revenge with plans to take down Dino in the high-stakes De Leon race—the Super Bowl of underground racing. To get there in time, Tobey must run a high-octane, action-packed gauntlet, dodging cops coast-to-coast and dealing with fallout from a dangerous bounty Dino put on his car. With his loyal crew and the surprisingly resourceful Julia as allies, Tobey defies odds at every turn and proves that even in the flashy world of exotic supercars, the underdog can still finish first.

PBS Celebrates the ‘War of the Worlds’ Radio Broadcast’s 75th Anniversary

It’s been 75 years since Orson Welles caused panic among radio listeners who somehow didn’t know that his reading of H.G. Wells’ War of the Worlds was not an actual Martian attack. The CBS Radio broadcast on October 30, 1938 caused 1+ million to freak out, all under the mistaken belief that the world was being attacked by creatures from outer space.

In honor of the 75th anniversary of that broadcast, PBS will air a one hour special featuring interviews and “dramatizations of some of the thousands of letters sent to Welles by an alternately admiring and furious public.” Mercury Theater member Richard Wilson saved those letters, and according to PBS, most haven’t been read since 1938.

“The ‘panic’ caused by the broadcast has become legendary,” stated producer Cathleen O’Connell. “Using these newly discovered letters was a wonderful way to personalize the story. These rarely heard first-hand accounts, juxtaposed with the print media coverage of the day, help demonstrate the true impact of Welles’s radio drama.”

The War of the Worlds special from producer/director O’Connell will be broadcast on October 29, 2013 at 9pm ET. The one-hour program will include interviews with director/film historian Peter Bogdanovich as well as Welles’ daughter Chris Welles Feder.

Details on the War of the Worlds Special [Courtesy of PBS]:

It took place on the night before Halloween, long known as Mischief Night. It began like any other ordinary Sunday evening, with millions of Americans tuned to their radios. But beneath the outward calm was a nation tense with worry and fear; the Great Depression refused to let up, and the threat of war in Europe loomed larger every day. Then, at 8:15 p.m., the voice of a panicked announcer broke into the dance music with a news bulletin reporting that strange explosions were taking place on the planet Mars, followed minutes later by a report that Martians had landed in the tiny town of Grover’s Mill, New Jersey.

Almost instantly, frantic listeners responded to the shocking news. Chicago newspapers were flooded with calls; in St. Louis, people gathered outside to discuss what to do about the ‘invaders’; in San Francisco, many feared that New Jersey had been laid to waste and that the Martians were heading west. Callers pleaded with the power company in Providence to shut off the lights so that the city would not be seen by the invaders. Similar reports of panicked reactions came from Baltimore, Atlanta, Indianapolis, Memphis, Minneapolis, and Salt Lake.

At the epicenter of the event, New Jersey national guardsmen flooded armories with calls asking where to report. And in cities and towns across the country, people stopped a moment to pray — then grabbed their loved ones and fled into the night.

Seventy-five years later, War of the Worlds explores this legendary but misunderstood event. With the CBS radio broadcast serving as its narrative spine, the film examines the elements that came together to create one of the most notorious media events in U.S. history: our longtime fascination with life on Mars; the emergence of radio as a powerful, pervasive medium; the eagerness of newspapers to disparage their radio rivals; the shocking Hindenburg explosion of 1937, the first disaster to broadcast live; and the brilliant enfant terrible Orson Welles, the director of the drama and mischief maker supreme.
