The Great Gatsby Soundtrack List Featuring Beyonce and Gotye

Baz Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby will never be confused with the 1974 version of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel which had Robert Redford and Mia Farrow in starring roles. No, Luhrmann is guaranteeing this version will stand on its own by A) delivering it in 3D, and B) including tunes from Jay Z, Beyonce, Gotye, and Florence+ The Machine.

Warner Bros and Interscope Records just revealed the track list for the upcoming The Great Gatsby soundtrack CD which was executive produced by Jay Z. The soundtrack features new original music from artists including Lana Del Rey, will.i.am The xx, and Fergie + Q Tip + GoonRock, and The Bryan Ferry Orchestra.

Jay Z’s been working on the film’s soundtrack for the past two years, “translating the Jazz Age sensibility of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel into the musical equivalents of our own times, through the blending of hip-hop, traditional jazz and other contemporary musical textures.” Explaining his approach to the film’s music, Jay Z said, “The Great Gatsby is that classic American story of one’s introduction to extravagance, decadence and illusion. It’s ripe for experimentation and ready to be interpreted with a modern twist. The imagination Baz brought to Moulin Rouge! made it a masterpiece, and Romeo + Juliet’s score wasn’t just in the background; the music became a character. This film’s vision and direction has all the makings of an epic experience.”

The Plot: The Great Gatsby follows would-be writer Nick Carraway (Tobey Maguire) as he leaves the Midwest and comes to New York City in the spring of 1922, an era of loosening morals, glittering jazz, bootleg kings, and sky-rocketing stocks. Chasing his own American Dream, Nick lands next door to a mysterious, party-giving millionaire, Jay Gatsby (Leonardo DiCaprio), and across the bay from his cousin, Daisy (Carey Mulligan), and her philandering, blue-blooded husband, Tom Buchanan (Joel Edgerton). It is thus that Nick is drawn into the captivating world of the super rich, their illusions, loves and deceits.

As Nick bears witness, within and without of the world he inhabits, he pens a tale of impossible love, incorruptible dreams and high-octane tragedy, and holds a mirror to our own modern times and struggles.

Lucasfilm and Dark Horse Offer Up a ‘Star Wars’ Comic Series

Star Wars Comics from Lucasfilm and Dark Horse

The original draft screenplay to The Star Wars by George Lucas is going to serve as the source material for an eight issue comic series from Dark Horse. The new comic will be released in September, with J.W. Rinzler and Mike Mayhew adapting Lucas’ The Star Wars screenplay.

The rough-draft original screenplay was created by Lucas three years before the first Star Wars movie was launched in theaters. The screenplay – titled The Star Wars – was set in a galaxy far, far away and featured “lazer swords” and monsters. It told the story of Jedi Annikin Starkiller, General Luke Skywalker, an alien named Han Solo, and evil Sith Knights.

“I’m not sure where I first read about The Star Wars—it was years and years ago—but the idea of Luke Skywalker being an older Jedi General, and Han Solo being a six-foot-tall lizard, turned my Star Wars fan brain on its side,” stated longtime Star Wars editor Randy Stradley. “I always assumed this would be one of those stories that would be ‘lost to history,’ so getting to work on bringing it to life is kinda like a dream come true.”

Writer J.W. Rinzler added, “While researching in the Lucasfilm Archives I’ve found many treasures—but one which truly astounded me was George’s rough draft for The Star Wars. His first complete imaginings were hallucinating to read—mind blowing. While working with George on another book project, I once asked if we could adapt his rough draft. He was hesitant. Years later, with Dark Horse’s invaluable help, we showed him a few drawn and colored pages of what it might look like. He gave us the okay.”

The Walking Dead Has New Non-Zombie Regulars

And by that I mean a batch of actors have been promoted to ‘series regulars’. According to The Hollywood Reporter, AMC has upped Chad Coleman, Sonequa Martin-Green, and Emily Kinney to full-time series regulars on The Walking Dead.

Coleman and Martin-Green play Tyreese and Sasha, survivors who were with our favorite ragtag group of zombie killers and then left to live in the Governor’s compound. Of course, once it was revealed just how crazy the Governor actually is, Tyreese and Sasha returned to the slightly more sane group housed in the prison.

Kinney has been on the series for 24 episodes, playing Hershel’s (Scott Wilson) daughter, Beth. Which brings up the question: why wasn’t she considered a regular cast member before this?

In addition, David Morrissey (‘The Governor’) has been moved into ‘series regular’ status and will be back for season four.

Magnolia Picks Up I Give It a Year with Rose Byrne

I Give It a Year PosterThe comedy movie I Give It a Year has been acquired by Magnolia Pictures for US distribution. Written and directed by Dan Mazer (screenwriter of Bruno and Borat), the British comedy stars Rose Byrne, Anna Faris, Rafe Spall, Minnie Driver, Simon Baker, and Stephen Merchant.

I Give It a Year was screened at the SXSW Film Festival, with Magnolia planning a theatrical release later this year.

“Dan Mazer is a terrific writer who has managed to both skewer and celebrate the romantic comedy genre and also deliver a gut-bustingly funny picture,” stated Magnolia President Eamonn Bowles announcing the acquisition.

The Plot:

Both a romantic comedy and a send-up of the genre, I Give It a Year picks up where other rom-coms end, after the glamour of a fairy tale romance and wedding has worn off, and the realities of marriage start to sink in. I Give It a Year plays nagging fights, judgmental families, and extramarital hijinks to great comic effect.

Follow me on this one… This new clip from the dramatic film Greetings from Tim Buckley features Penn Badgley singing as Jeff Buckley covering a song of Tim Buckley’s. Got it?
