Details on Whose Line Is It Anyway?:

Hosted by comedian Aisha Tyler, Whose Line Is It Anyway? will also feature the return of cast members Ryan Stiles, Wayne Brady and Colin Mochrie, who along with a special guest each episode, must put their comedic skills to the test through a series of spontaneous improv games, prompted only by random ideas supplied by the studio audience. Based on the wildly successful U.K. format, which also spawned a previous incarnation in the US that ran for eight seasons on ABC, Whose Line Is It Anyway? is executive produced by Dan Patterson, Mark Leveson, Jimmy Mulville, Ryan Stiles and Wayne Brady.

Details on Perfect Score:

Perfect Score, hosted by fan-favorite actress Arielle Kebbel, puts a unique twist on dating game shows by not only giving players a chance to win a date, but also the opportunity to win cold hard cash — IF they can successfully identify their perfect match. In each half-hour episode, two friends compete to see who can pick their ideal mate from a group of 12 prospective singles, after both the players and the contestants have taken compatibility tests. These tests are used to assign cash values to each possible match, and the player who selects the most compatible single – with the highest cash value – wins the cash prize and the date!

Details on Breaking Pointe:

This critically-acclaimed docuseries rips back the curtain on the inner workings of the elite Salt Lake City ballet company, Ballet West. Breaking Pointe obliterates the notion that ballet is a dated art form and shatters pre-conceived stereotypes about the men and women who give their lives to the world of ballet. Underneath the tights and tutus lie warriors who battle in a gritty world of extreme athleticism, focus and dedication while hunting for the unattainable…perfection. In this close-knit community, the dancers’ lives intertwine both inside and outside of the studio, often putting intense pressure on friendships and romance.

Details on The Hunt:

The Hunt will premiere on Wednesday, July 31 (9:00-10:00p.m. ET). In this intense new wilderness competition, 12 teams of 2 will enter “The Arena,” a fenced-in enclosure in the middle of the wild, where they must live for one month and compete against each other for scarce resources. With $250,000 on the line, it’s a winner-take-all battle in which the teams must hunt each other down to survive.

‘The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones’ Serves Up a New Trailer

The Mortal Instruments City of Bones 2nd Poster

Films based on young adult novels have been hit and miss, but as a fan of Cassandra Clare’s The Mortal Instruments book series I’m hoping this is one of the better adaptations. Directed by Harald Zwart, this fantasy adventure about supernatural creatures stars Lily Collins, Jamie Campbell Bower, Robert Sheehan, Kevin Zegers, Lena Headey, Kevin Durand, Aidan Turner, Jemima West, and Godfrey Gao.

The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones opens in theaters on August 23, 2013.

The Plot:

Set in contemporary New York City, a seemingly ordinary teenager, Clary Fray (Collins), discovers she is the descendant of a line of Shadowhunters, a secret cadre of young half-angel warriors locked in an ancient battle to protect our world from demons. After the disappearance of her mother (Headey), Clary must join forces with a group of Shadowhunters, who introduce her to a dangerous alternate New York called Downworld, filled with demons, warlocks, vampires, werewolves and other deadly creatures. Based on the worldwide best-selling book series.

First Look – ‘Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters’ Trailer

The effects are on a grander scale, the cast has matured into their roles, and there’s an impressive group of supporting players in this sequel. What sequel? Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters, coming to theaters on August 16, 2013. Based on the Rick Riordan book series and directed by Thor Freudenthal, the sequel’s cast includes Logan Lerman, Alexandra Daddario, Brandon T Jackson, Jake Abel, Douglas Smith, Leven Rambin, Nathan Fillion, and Stanley Tucci.

The Plot:

Percy Jackson has had an unnervingly quiet school year. But then he discovers that the magical borders protecting Half Blood Hill are failing. Unless something is done, the camp will be attacked by demons and monsters. The only way to restore power to the camp’s borders is to find the mythical Golden Fleece. And the only person who can undertake this dangerous quest is Percy.

Comparing ‘Bates Motel’ to Hitchcock’s ‘Psycho’

There has been a renewed interest in Hitchcock lately, witness the theatrical film Hitchcock with Sir Anthony Hopkins & Helen Mirren, the 2012 TV movie, The Girl, and now the A&E TV show, Bates Motel. Bates Motel stars Vera Farmiga as Norma Bates and Freddie Highmore as her son, Norman Bates

It’s a prequel to the 1960 film Psycho except that it’s set in the present. And there have been other interpretations of the original film or characters: a sequel directed by the star of the 1960 film, Anthony Perkins; a 1987 TV series also titled Bates Motel; and Gus Van Sant’s 1998 color remake of Hitchcock’s original black and white film, also titled Psycho.

The casting of Vera Farmiga is inspired not only because she’s an outstanding actress (a reason in itself to watch the show), but she also has the look of a classic Hitchcock lead. Tippi Hedren (The Birds and Marnie), Grace Kelly (Rear Window), Kim Novak (Vertigo), and Janet Leigh in the original Psycho, were cool, lovely blondes as is Vera Farmiga. It’s also quite believable that Freddie Highmore’s Norman could become the Norman of Anthony Perkins’ portrayal. In fact, Nestor Carbonell, who plays Sheriff Alex Romero, bears an uncanny resemblance to a young Anthony Perkins – even if it is coincidental.

The connections, of course, don’t end with casting. While the setting has been changed to a seaside village, much of the action takes place in a creepy-looking old house as in the original, complete with old-style furniture and refrigerator, and even a rotary dial phone on the wall (even though the characters use iPhones). There are similar plot points: as in the film, a knife is used in the murder in the first episode of Bates Motel, a bathtub in a motel room plays a role, and the victim is disposed of in a body of water as was Norman’s first victim in Psycho.

However, it’s not at all surprising that the depiction of violence in a 2013 TV show and a film released in 1960 is markedly different. There is graphic on-screen violence in the very first episode of Bates Motel, while in the film, the violence in the famous shower scene is not actually shown. Hitchcock’s studio, Paramount, tried to discourage him from making the film because the material might be gruesome or seem like exploitation, according to David Thomsen’s 2012 book, Big Screen, a Story of the Movies. Thomsen indicates that Hitchcock worked his way around the censors using camera angles and careful editing. It was also shot in black and black, by nature less realistic.

Hitchcock’s Psycho is an iconic film that definitely has staying power as this latest effort, Bates Motel, shows.

‘Pineapple Express 2’ Movie Trailer Arrives

“We should make more sequels to our movies.”

Seth Rogen, James Franco, Danny McBride, and Craig Robinson team up to deliver a Pineapple Express 2 trailer that actually makes us want to see a Pineapple Express sequel. Alas, it’s all a big April Fool’s Day joke from the guys who are actually delivering the apocalyptic comedy This Is The End to theaters this summer.

‘Game of Thrones’ Season 3 – Daenerys Meets the Unsullied

Finally after what seemed like an impossible amount of time to wait but was in truth only a year, Game of Thrones returned to HBO on March 31, 2013. One of the key scenes in season three’s first episode involved Daenerys inspecting Unsullied troops while deciding if she wants to purchase them to fight on her side. The Unsullied are ruthless and do not display any reactions to pain, and will do anything their owner commands of them.

In this behind-the-scenes video, Emilia Clarke and fellow Game of Thrones cast members talk about filming the scene and its importance in Daenerys’ overall scheme to win back the kingdom.

‘The Hangover’ as a Horror Movie

Tweak the sound effects, change the lighting a bit, and add ominous music to the original The Hangover and what have you got? A film of a completely different genre. Richard W. Scott created this video as “an experimental investigation into the power of post-production techniques on a movie’s genre (university undergraduate dissertation),” and it’s quite creepy and effective.

The Hangover, as an R-rated comedy, hit theaters on June 5, 2009 and stars Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms, Zach Galifianakis, and Justin Bartha.

Interview with ‘Teen Wolf’ Creator/Executive Producer Jeff Davis

MTV’s Teen Wolf creator/executive producer Jeff Davis joined the show’s stars Tyler Posey (‘Scott’) and Dylan O’Brien (‘Stiles’) at the 2013 WonderCon in Anaheim, CA. The March 31st event marked the first time Teen Wolf presented a panel at the annual event, and the audience absolutely ate up the presentation, hanging on every little detail released about the upcoming third season of the super popular series.

Davis also took part in interviews in addition to the WonderCon panel with fans, providing us with the scoop on what the audience can expect from the new villains introduced in season three. He also chatted about the direction they’re taking with individual characters, which character changed the most based on the actor hired to handle the role, Derek’s ‘hero’ trajectory, and specific character arcs. And all of this is done without giving away any spoilers (well done, Mr. Davis!).

21 year old reality TV star Shain Gandee has been found dead in West Virginia after he had been reported missing this weekend. Gandee, a member of the cast of MTV’s Buckwild which had recently been renewed for a second season, was last seen alive at a bar in Sissonville, West Virginia around 3am on March 31st. He and his uncle, David (48), had told patrons of the bar that they were going four-wheeling in Shain’s Bronco. The family attempted to find Shain and David on Sunday, March 31st before calling 911 and reporting them missing.

Kanawha County sheriffs ultimately discovered Shain’s body along with this uncle and an unidentified person in a vehicle in a difficult area to access this morning. The cause of death has not been revealed, with the police not releasing many details on the circumstance of the discovery other than to say the area was very remote.

MTV issued a statement following the confirmation of Gandee’s death: “We are shocked and saddened by the terrible news about Shain Gandee, and those involved in this tragic incident. We are waiting for more information but at this time, our main concern is for the Gandee family and their friends. Our thoughts and prayers are with them. Shain had a magnetic personality, with a passion for life that touched everyone he met and we will miss him dearly.”
