Film Review: ‘The Croods’ is Fine Family Fun

Parents with small children likely to be emotionally scarred by the vicious flying monkeys of Oz the Great and Powerful now have a much more appropriate film to share with the family: The Croods. Also, unlike director Sam Raimi’s lackluster prequel, this movie’s actually fun.

The premise is sort of a twist on Ice Age: The Meltdown versus Ice Age: Continental Drift, though I’m not mad at the simple concept of a family of Cavemen being led to safety by a mysterious stranger. Just like comparing with the mediocre Oz, the nice difference between The Croods and any of the Ice Age sequels is that this is actually fun.

So let’s see, I’ve badmouthed a few films in order to prop up this one. Yeah, that sounds a lot like me. But what makes this movie any good? It starts with a funny script, continues with entertaining character designs, and finishes strong with good voice work.

Directors Kirk De Micco and Chris Sanders also took on the writing duties (Sanders previously had a hand in the story for such notable films as The Lion King, Aladdin and Beauty & the Beast, also directing Lilo & Stitch and How to Train Your Dragon). De Micco’s credits are far less impressive, but he’s making up for it here. Such lofty comparisons are dangerous to make and just to temper expectations, I’d place The Croods‘ effectiveness somewhere between the two previous directing efforts of Sanders. That’s still good company but I’ve got no delusions that this will pick up a Best Picture nomination (of the non-animated variety) for next year’s Oscars; though if there are five better-animated films this year it will be the strongest year for the genre in quite some time as recent years have been a hodgepodge of mediocrity.

The animation is a good mix of exaggerated and traditional, working well with the 3D design. I kept forgetting which animation studio did the movie but always found myself remembering it was Dreamworks because the 3D actually works. They’re the only animation studio that’s figured out how to use the technology effectively. All of the others have yet to figure out how to create truly immersive environments and instead only manage to make a few objects poke out at the audience. That’s a crucial distinction, and it’s the tipping point for whether you should spend any extra money to see it in the third dimension. It’s not absolutely necessary here (it’s always more important that the movie is just plain good) but I preferred that extra depth when flipping my glasses on and off to see what differences there actually were.

Finally, touching on the voice cast, it’s a good mix of actors to bring these characters to life. Emma Stone and Ryan Reynolds have such unique and young voices that it makes relating to their characters very easy. Nic Cage’s ultra-recognizable vocal patterns make a lot of sense as the over-protective patriarch of the family, and he’s nicely balanced out by the calm nature of Catherine Keener playing his wife and the spot-on comedic timing of Cloris Leachman as his mother-in-law. Clark Duke’s take on the son doesn’t stand out, but it’s done well and in no way detracts from the others’ efforts.

Like I alluded to in the opening, The Croods is a good, family friendly film. It appeals to the intended demographic of kids (keeping those in the screening audience engaged and interested throughout) and has plenty of appeal for the adults in the audience also. It’s correctly rated at PG (unlike Oz) and is worth a trip to the theaters if one is looking for something pleasant to enjoy in theaters, with or without wee children begging for gummi treats.

GRADE: B+

The Croods opens in theaters on March 22, 2013 and is rated PG for some scary action.

Turbo-Charged ‘Turbo’ Trailer #2

I don’t like snails, but I’m going to put my aversion to the slimy creatures aside just for Turbo. DreamWorks Animation’s snail-centric animated film is like Fast and Furious, albeit an F&F with shells in place of cars and slugs in place of hunky drivers.

Coming to theaters on July 19, 2013, Turbo features the voices of Ryan Reynolds, Paul Giamatti, Ken Jeong, Maya Rudolph, Ben Schwartz, Snoop Dogg, and Samuel L. Jackson.

The Plot:

From the makers of Madagascar and Kung Fu Panda, Turbo is a high-velocity 3D comedy about an underdog snail who kicks into overdrive when he miraculously attains the power of super-speed. But after making fast friends with a crew of streetwise, tricked-out es-car-goes, Turbo learns that no one succeeds on their own. So he puts his heart and shell on the line to help his pals achieve their dreams, before Turbo-charging his own impossible dream: winning the Indy 500.

‘The Croods’ Movie Review

The Croods
Guy (Ryan Reynolds) and Eep (Emma Stone) get to know one another, as Guy´s friend and pet Belt (Chris Sanders) looks on in ‘The Croods’ (Photo © 2013 DreamWorks Animation LLC)

“I’m Guy, this is Belt. We need to leave immediately, the world is ending. Everything we’re standing on right here will be gone…I’m calling it the End,” says Guy (voiced by Ryan Reynolds) to Eep Crood (voiced by Emma Stone) in the prehistoric animated/adventure film The Croods.

Her whole life, cave girl Eep has lived by her father Grug’s (voiced by Nicolas Cage) rules which include ‘new is bad, never not be afraid, and get back into the cave.’ Yearning for adventure and always curious, Eep ventures out of the cave one night and meets a nomad named Guy who tells her about the end of the world and gives her a horn to blow if she survives and wants to join him in his journey.

At first, Eep doesn’t really believe Guy. But later that morning when there’s an earthquake and her family’s cave is destroyed with her family barely surviving, Eep realizes that Guy was right. With their shelter gone, Eep, Grug, and the rest of the family begin the very first family road trip. Things get even more complicated when Eep calls Guy with her horn and asks him to lead them to the high mountains to safety.

Grug instantly dislikes Guy for two reasons. One, he’s new and remember ‘new is bad.’ And two, Eep is smitten with Guy. But if the Croods and Guy are going to have any chance to survive the journey across the spectacular landscape and all its scary and dangerous animals, they will have to find a way to work together and trust each other.

The Croods is a very funny animated adventure that is sure to have families smiling and laughing as the credits roll. This is a bright, colorful film with wonderful use of 3D animation that truly enhances the movie-going experience. The falling rocks, stones, and dust seem to just be missing the Crood family as well as the audience.

The film has a strong cast of voices bringing the characters to life. Nicolas Cage is perfect as the burly, overprotective, but loving father and leader of the family who’s truly terrified of the outside world but is determined to find a new safe home for his family. Ryan Reynolds is solid as the young outdoors adventurer who at first only wants to get away from Eep and her loud and annoying family but starts to find himself falling for her and caring for her family’s survival.

Emma Stone brings just the right amount of spunk and brashness to Eep, the rogue member of the Crood family who yearns for excitement and a little danger.

The Croods also has a perfect blend of slapstick antics and smart humor in the writing and action to entertain both the children and adults. It’s reminiscent of the Ice Age films as well as the television cartoon The Flintstones.

The only drawback to the movie is its lack of heart and emotional soul in the script. This becomes very clear when two of the characters are supposed to have a heartfelt and touching moment late in the film, and it comes off feeling forced and fake.

Full of color and fun The Croods is so far the best animated film of the year and is sure to be a delight for kids of all ages.

GRADE: B

The Croods opens in theaters on March 22, 2013 and is rated PG for some scary action.

‘The Croods’ Heads to Stonehenge

20th Century Fox is going all-out in marketing the family-friendly animated movie The Croods. And in one of the most unique promotional pushes of the year, the studio created the “first-ever modern monument” at the historical landmark, Stonehenge.

A gigantic rock monument spelling out “The Croods” was placed in front of Stonehenge in celebration of Spring Solstice.

Opening in theaters on March 22, 2013, The Croods features the voices of Nicolas Cage, Emma Stone, Ryan Reynolds, Catherine Keener, Cloris Leachman, and Clark Duke.

The Plot: The Croods follows the world’s first modern family through the journey of a lifetime. When the cave that has always been their home is destroyed – with the rest of their world not far behind it – the Croods are forced to set off on the first family road (or path) trip. Rocked by generational clashes and seismic shifts, the Croods discover an incredible new world filled with fantastic creatures, and a future beyond any they imagined.

It’s been six months since Andy McNally and Nick Collins left for their undercover operation. We return to 15 Division with them – and quickly realize that everything seems to have changed. But that’s what being a cop is: adjusting to new situations, rolling with the punches. Change is constant, and if you don’t adapt, you’re left behind. So when Andy returns to find that Sam Swarek is now a Detective and that he’s moved on, both professionally and personally, she’s going to have to figure out how to deal with it.

Meanwhile, Dov’s life gets awkward when a one-night stand with Frank’s goddaughter becomes more complicated; Chris is torn between staying at 15 Division and moving his new family back to his smaller, safer hometown; Traci is learning to work with new detective Swarek, while trying to move on from the loss of her fiancŽ, Jerry Barber; And although Nick and Gail have cemented their relationship, Nick can’t seem to shed the feeling that all is not right between them.
