HBO Cancels Enlightened

Laura Dern in Enlightened

It appears HBO won’t be bringing back Enlightened for season three, according to TVLine. The series recently wrapped up season two with an episode which could play as either a season or series finale, and apparently HBO’s ready to leave it at that.

Enlightened debuted a 10 episode season one on October 10, 2011 with Laura Dern writing, executive producing, and starring in the half-hour comedy/drama. The series was co-created by Dern and Mike White who also wrote, directed, and starred in the show.

The Plot:

Season one of Enlightened told the story of self-destructive corporate executive Amy Jellicoe (Dern), who had a spiritual awakening after a career-destroying meltdown. Though determined to live a more enlightened existence, her new outlook only wreaked more havoc, both at home and at work.

In season two, Amy redoubles her efforts to gather evidence against Abaddonn with the support of Tyler (White), her meek IT ally, and enlists journalist Jeff Flender in her cause. Meanwhile, Amy’s ex, Levi, continues to struggle with rehab, and it remains to be seen if he will embrace recovery and return as the man she always wanted him to be.

Movie Review: ‘Olympus Has Fallen’

Olympus Has Fallen Gerard Butler
Gerard Butler stars as Mike Banning in ‘Olympus Has Fallen’ (Photo credit: Phillip V. Caruso)

Earlier this year, John McClane took a giant dump on audiences, traveling to Russia to rescue the son no one ever cared about and setting a tragically low bar for the Die Hard franchise. What does that have to do with director Antoine Fuqua’s movie about a terrorist attack on the White House, Olympus Has Fallen? Well, let’s do a little game of This versus That.

Olympus Has Fallen: Terrorists take over a building the day after July 4th, hold people hostage, and attempt to hack into a secure government system.
Die Hard: Terrorists take over a building during a Christmas party, hold people hostage, and attempt to crack a giant vault.

Olympus Has Fallen: A Secret Service agent (Gerard Butler), previously kicked off Presidential detail, finds himself alone in the White House attempting to defeat the bad guys and save the President (Aaron Eckhart).
Die Hard: A New York City Cop (Bruce Willis) finds himself alone in Nakatomi Plaza attempting to defeat the bad guys and save his wife (Bonnie Bedelia).

Olympus Has Fallen: Butler uses a Bluetooth headpiece and satellite phone to stay in contact with the only black characters in the movie, the Speaker of the House (Morgan Freeman) and the Director of the Secret Service (Angela Bassett).
Die Hard: Willis uses a radio and a car phone to stay in contact with the only black characters in the movie, a LAPD cop (Reginald VelJohnson) and a limo driver (De’voreaux White).

Olympus Has Fallen: Butler and the President’s son use the inner tunnels and secret passageways of the White House to avoid detection (to varying degrees of success).
Die Hard: Willis uses the ventilation ducts of Nakatomi Plaza to avoid detection (to varying degrees of success).

What does all of this boil down to? Why in the hell wasn’t this the script for Die Hard 5?!? All you need to do is replace Butler with Willis and you’ve got a pretty kick-ass Die Hard. As it stands, A Good Day to Die Hard was A Bad Day to be in a Movie Theater and Olympus Has Fallen is a fairly decent action flick. It benefits greatly from being rated-R, allowing for high collateral damage when the terrorists make their first move and a continuing body count once Butler gets to work clearing 1600 Pennsylvania Ave of its uninvited guests.

There are plenty of instances that I’m sure would have Secret Service agents either fuming or doubling over in laughter about; as certain protocols and actions made by officials seem counter-intuitive to actually protecting the assets in jeopardy. However, if one simply allows the brain to ignore occasional lapses of logic, this is the kind of popcorn muncher more typically associated with the summer movie season. (I would imagine releasing a movie about terrorism committed on American soil just after the 4th of July closer to the actual holiday might be a harder sell.)

The entire cast does what they’re asked to do, posturing and spitting rhetoric at all the expected times. Fuqua does a decent job of staying out of the way for the most part, actually allowing fights to take place outside of the ultra-close-up technique too often employed these days. He does succumb to certain attempts at iconic moments (most of which involve the US Flag) that come off as more than a little hokey and my biggest problem with this aspect was that so much of the Rah Rah America stuff came off as a bit staged, rather than an organic development of the events as they unfolded. About the only thing missing for an overload of cheese factor was having Eckhart go full Harrison and tell the terrorists to ‘Get Out of My House!’.

There’s a subplot concerning Butler’s wife that just needed to be excised completely from the script as it adds less than nothing to the overall effort. Likewise, there’s an attempt to play up the less than cuddly relationship between Butler and Freeman via a few lines of dialogue here and there that aren’t reinforced well enough to make it matter and they end up being mostly empty sentences.

That’s a whole lot of words from me. You’re probably still wondering if this movie is for you. It’s actually quite simple. Do you like the premise of Die Hard? Do you like action movies where the R-rating allows people to suffer actual deaths, rather than the PG-13 treatment of off-camera murders and a string of baddies knocked unconscious rather than into their graves? If you said yes, then Olympus Has Fallen is probably up your alley. It’s one of the better action movies to come out in years, which isn’t saying much as I can’t seem to remember any great ones in recent memory, but if you’re a fan of the genre, this one’s actually worth the price of admission.

I still wish it had been the fifth Die Hard though. If anyone’s invented time travel yet and wants to be a part of rectifying this situation, feel free to let me know. I’ve also got a history report I could have used a little help on.

GRADE: B

Olympus Has Fallen opens in theaters on March 22, 2013 and is rated R for strong violence and language throughout.

‘Iron Man 3’ Has a New Colorful Poster

Iron Man 3 Movie Poster

Here it is…the new Iron Man 3 poster! What do you think? I like the look of Robert Downey Jr all tattered and beat up in his Iron Man costume clutching Gwyneth Paltrow who’s either scared or pissed off (it’s hard to tell). Guy Pearce, Ben Kingsley, and Don Cheadle can also be seen – although they’re pictured much smaller than Downey Jr and Paltrow.

The Plot:

Marvel’s Iron Man 3 pits brash-but-brilliant industrialist Tony Stark/Iron Man against an enemy whose reach knows no bounds. When Stark finds his personal world destroyed at his enemy’s hands, he embarks on a harrowing quest to find those responsible. This journey, at every turn, will test his mettle. With his back against the wall, Stark is left to survive by his own devices, relying on his ingenuity and instincts to protect those closest to him.

As he fights his way back, Stark discovers the answer to the question that has secretly haunted him: does the man make the suit or does the suit make the man?

Iron Man 3 opens in theaters on May 3, 2013.

Magnolia Pictures Likes Drinking Buddies

Olivia Wilde in Drinking BuddiesWriter/director Joe Swanberg’s Drinking Buddies has been picked up by Magnolia Pictures for release in North America later this year. Olivia Wilde, Jake Johnson, Anna Kendrick and Ron Livingston star in the comedy which premiered at this year’s SXSW Film Festival.

“Joe Swanberg has been evolving steadily as a filmmaker, and with Drinking Buddies, he’s delivered his best work yet—a truly funny, smart and insightful film about real adult relationships,” said Magnolia President Eamonn Bowles. “Olivia Wilde, Jake Johnson and the rest of the cast also deliver some of the best work of their careers. We’re raising an imperial pint in celebration.”

“I feel tremendously privileged to work with such a smart, energetic and exciting company,” said Swanberg. “I had an amazing time working with the Magnolia family on V/H/S and I can’t wait to be their drinking buddy again. I just know they will do great things with the film.”

The Plot:

Drinking Buddies follows the lives of Kate (Olivia Wilde) and Luke (Jake Johnson) who work together at a craft brewery. They have one of those friendships that feels like it could be something more. But Kate is with Chris (Ron Livingston), and Luke is with Jill (Anna Kendrick). And Jill wants to know if Luke is ready to talk about marriage. The answer to that question becomes crystal clear when Luke and Kate unexpectedly find themselves alone for a weekend.

Call Me Crazy: A Five Film featuring an all-star ensemble cast telling five interconnected stories will air on Lifetime on Saturday, April 20, 2013 at 8pm ET/PT. Among the many stars involved in this original film are Jennifer Hudson, Melissa Leo, Octavia Spencer, Brittany Snow, Sarah Hyland, Sofia Vassilieva, Ernie Hudson, Jason Ritter, Jean Smart, Lea Thompson, Melanie Griffith and Chelsea Handler. Jennifer Aniston is involved as an executive producer.

Laura Dern, Bryce Dallas Howard, Bonnie Hunt, Ashley Judd and Sharon Maguire directed the film’s five stories.

“When we started researching this topic, we were all surprised to learn that one in four adults lives with some sort of mental illness. With so many people dealing with this in their private lives, there is still so much stigma and shame. It’s time we bring it out of the closet and into the light of day,” stated Aniston.

Executive producer Marta Kauffman added, “We are so proud to be a part of this powerful television event. To work with such amazingly talented directors, writers, and actors, and for Lifetime to give us the opportunity to tackle such an important issue is nothing less than miraculous. We are extremely grateful to be able to shed even a little light on this topic, and we fervently hope that this is just the beginning of the mental health discussion in our country.”

The Call Me Crazy: A Five Film Plot: Written by Deirdre O’Connor (Five) and directed by Howard, “Lucy” follows the film’s title character (Snow), a law student who finds herself amidst the horror of schizophrenia, landing her in an institution where, through the support of a new friend (Ritter), meds and her psychotherapist (Spencer), she begins her path to not only healing, but a promising future.

“Grace,” directed by Maguire and written by Howard J. Morris (Five), explores bipolar disorder through the experience of a teenage daughter (Hyland) whose mother (Leo) grapples with the condition.

“Allison” weaves together comedy and family drama in a story about healing when its eldest daughter Lucy (Snow) returns home from inpatient treatment and spoils her sister Allison’s (Vassilieva) unveiling of her new boyfriend to their parents (real-life wife and husband Smart and Richard Gilliland).

“Eddie,” directed by Hunt and written by Stephan Godchaux (Five), delves into the world of depression as seen through the eyes of a comedian’s wife (Thompson) as she grapples with understanding how her husband Eddie (Mitch Rouse), whom is so loved, can be so withdrawn and overcome with sadness. The short also stars Handler and features appearances by Dave Foley (The Kids in the Hall), Jay Chandrasekhar (Super Troopers), James Avery (The Closer) and Ross Mathews (Chelsea Lately).

In “Maggie,” penned by Erin Cressida Wilson and directed by Judd, a female veteran (Hudson) returns home from war to her son and father (Ernie Hudson), only to have her life shattered by the onset of posttraumatic stress disorder, through which her lawyer, Lucy, helps her.
