‘The Sapphires’ New Trailer Arrives

I actually thought The Sapphires was released sometime last year, but apparently it’s not heading to theaters until March 22, 2013. And in support of its upcoming theatrical release, The Weinstein Company has put out this new trailer for the music-driven comedy.

Directed by Wayne Blair, The Sapphires stars Chris O’Dowd, Deborah Mailman, 2006 Australian Idol runner-up Jessica Mauboy, Shari Sebbens, and Miranda Tapsell.

The Plot:

Inspired by a true story, The Sapphires follows four vivacious, young and talented Australian Aboriginal girls from a remote mission as they learn about love, friendship, and war when their all-girl group The Sapphires entertains the U.S. troops in Vietnam in 1968. Cynthia, Gail, Julie and Kay are discovered by Dave, a good-humored talent scout with a kind heart, very little rhythm but a great knowledge of soul music. As their manager, Dave books the sisters their first true gig giving them their first taste of stardom, and travels them to Vietnam to sing for the American troops.

‘Side Effects’ Film Review

Side Effects
Rooney Mara and Channing Tatum in ‘Side Effects’ (Photo © Open Road Films)

“Em, Em turn the music down. It’s the middle of the night. Em, are you awake?” asks Martin Taylor (Channing Tatum) to his wife, Emma (Rooney Mara). But it turns out she’s sleepwalking which is one of the possible side effects of the new prescription drug she is taking for her depression and anxiety in the mystery/thriller, Side Effects.

Since Martin was released from prison after serving his sentence for insider trading, Emma has been getting more and more anxious and depressed. And after crashing her car into a wall on purpose, she begins getting treatment by psychiatrist Dr. Jonathan Banks (Jude Law). After trying different medications which seem to have little to no effect on Emma’s condition, Dr. Banks puts her on a new experimental drug he was recently introduced to by a drug representative.

At first, both Emma and Martin are thrilled with the results of the drug. Emma tells Dr. Banks in one of her sessions she’s finally able to get some sleep, she’s feeling better, and she and her husband were able to have sex. However, after a sleepwalking incident in which Emma was unaware of what she was doing and was setting the table and playing loud music in the middle of the night, Martin begins to get concerned and thinks maybe she should try something else. But, Emma wants to stay on the drug, convinced no other medication is going to help her with her condition.

One morning Emma wakes to discover she had another of her sleepwalking episodes and finds herself covered in blood and a body with a knife in its back on her floor. Calling 911 in a panic, Emma tells them there has been a murder in her apartment but refuses to admit she did it. It’s not long before Dr. Banks is brought to where Emma is being questioned by the police and Banks begins to worry about his patient and his medical career.

Side Effects is a sluggishly paced mystery/thriller with a strong cast but unfortunately an extremely predictable and familiar plot. Rooney Mara gives the best performance in the film as Emma, the seemingly soft, weak, and sad young woman who just can’t cope anymore with her charming but truly corrupt husband who’s looking to get back on top in the same exact business that got him put away in prison in the first place. The scene with her waiting for a subway train and getting closer and closer to the edge as the train comes pulling into the station is wonderfully disturbing.

Jude Law gives a solid performance as Dr. Jonathan Banks, her ambitious psychiatrist who wants to help Emma but slowly begins to suspect after the tragedy that there might be much more going on with Emma and the people in her life than he ever suspected. It’s an average almost every man role that doesn’t allow much for Law to do until near the third act of the film when he suddenly becomes a brilliant detective. (He’d give Sherlock Holmes a run for his money.)

The biggest problem with the film though is with its heavy-handedness of the secrets about the characters – which won’t be revealed here – which are hinted at and eluded to by both the actors and the director Steven Soderbergh. It’s soooo painfully obvious what’s really going on with the characters that the audience would have to be on drugs themselves not to catch on to the ‘Shhhh, don’t tell’ not-so-shocking truth.

Reminiscent of far superior mystery/thrillers such as Fracture and Jagged Edge, Side Effects is a feeble, unengaging film with twists and turns the audience will see coming a mile away and will forget about not long after they leave the theater.

GRADE: C-

Side Effects hits theaters on February 8, 2013 and is rated R for sexuality, nudity, violence, and language.

NBC Cancels ‘Do No Harm’

Steven Pasquale in Do No Harm

Well, that didn’t take long at all. After just two episodes, NBC has given up on Do No Harm starring Steven Pasquale, Alana de la Garza, and Samm Levine. The Hollywood Reporter broke the news, although everyone could see the writing on the wall. The early decision to pull the series is actually a no-brainer for the network.

Despite an interesting premise – a doctor has a Jekyll and Hyde personality – the show earned the dubious distinction of being the drama series with the lowest premiere viewership in NBC’s history. And episode two didn’t do anything to turn things around, pretty much guaranteeing the show was not going to be around for long.

Do No Harm will be replaced by repeat episodes of Law & Order: SVU.

The Plot: Dr. Jason Cole (Pasquale, Rescue Me) is a highly respected neurosurgeon who has it all – a lucrative career, confident charm, the gift of compassion. But he also has a deep, dark secret. One morning when he wakes up disoriented in a wrecked hotel room amidst several near-naked women he’s never seen before, he knows one thing: it’s happening again. Every night at the same hour, something inside Jason changes, leaving him almost unrecognizable – seductive, devious, borderline sociopathic.

This new man is his dangerous alternate personality who goes by the name of ‘Ian Price.’ For years he’s battled Ian, keeping him in check with a powerful experimental sedative. But now his – their – body has developed a resistance to the serum, setting Ian free once again. And to make matters worse, after being suppressed for so long, Ian is hell-bent on taking revenge on his oppressor. With everyone Jason cares about at risk – patients, friends, coworkers, and even the woman he loves – he’s got to stop Ian once and for all. Will they find some common ground, or will they bring each other down? Hell hath no fury like an alter ego scorned.

Reluctantly drawn into the epic problems facing the Land of Oz and its inhabitants, Oscar must find out who is good and who is evil before it is too late. Details on Natalie Maines’ Solo Album ‘Mother’

The Dixie Chicks’s Natalie Maines is branching out with her first solo album, Mother. Dropping on May 7, 2013, the Columbia Records release features the Grammy-winning singer going in a new direction.

According to Columbia Records, Mother is edgier and more intense than Maines’ previous work.

Maines partnered with fellow Grammy winner Ben Harper to co-produce the album. And Maines recorded her first solo release in Harper’s studio.

Commenting on Mother, Maines said, “I wanted this music to be very different from the Dixie Chicks. Lots of albums by lead singers might just as well have been made by the band, but I think this is very different from anything the Chicks could make. That separation and distinction was important.”

Maines’ version of Pink Floyd’s mother was included in the soundtrack to the documentary West of Memphis, which followed the case of the three wrongly accused Arkansas men (teenagers at the time of their arrests) who were ultimately released from jail following their appeals. Maines was a steadfast supporter of the men’s innocence, and the track “Free Life” (written by Dan Wilson) on Mother was performed at a rally to help free the men.

Maines explains that her Dixie Chicks partners are writers on “Come Cryin’ to Me.” “That was a song we decided was too rock for Taking the Long Way,” said Maines, “but it really felt right to have a piece of them on here.”

MOTHER Track Listing:

1. Without You
2. Mother
3. Free Life
4. Silver Bell
5. Lover You Should’ve Come Over
6. Vein in Vain
7. Trained
8. Come Cryin’ To Me
9. I’d Run Away
10. Take It On Faith
