New Artist Spotlight: Lucky Ned Pepper

Josh Graham and Rick Russell of Lucky Ned Pepper

If Westerns are your type of film, then the name Lucky Ned Pepper might ring a bell: It’s the bad guy in True Grit, a nasty, cantankerous character typical of those that prowled the plains and prairies. It’s also the name Josh Graham and Rick Russell chose for their new duo.

While there’s nothing particularly villainous about these two Bakersfield-based singers, they do infuse their music with some wide-open, big-sky flavor. The songs on their debut album, Get Lucky, are contemporary, each written by some of the best songwriters along Music Row. But they look at home in scuffed boots, jeans and farmland fashion. Their singing complements these images by evoking the courtliness, swagger and easy-going humor of cowboy life.

Graham and Russell have been around long enough to season their sound with experience. For 13 years they were members of the Smokin’ Armadillos. When the group split, they went their separate ways until 2005, when Russell invited Graham to join in on a solo project. They formalized their partnership as Lucky Ned Pepper in 2009 and began laying the tracks that led to Get Lucky.

The opener and first single, “I Remember the Music,” sets the stage. Written by Ashley Gorley and Wade Kirby, it’s a nostalgic but spirited recollection of good times and the music that accompanied them. From the celebratory “I Oughta Own This Bar” (Max T. Barnes and Kendell Marvel) to the lost-love requiem “Santa Fe” (Larry Bastian and Bo Allen), often with sweet additional harmonies from Joy Sampson, they paint a picture that’s rooted in memory yet as immediate as today.

IN THEIR OWN WORDS

CD IN YOUR STEREO
RUSSELL: “Chris Young … Neon.” GRAHAM: “I don’t know. It’s broke!”

SONG YOU SING IN THE SHOWER
RUSSELL: “Lucky Ned Pepper songs!”

BOOK ON YOUR NIGHTSTAND
GRAHAM: “The Bible and Keith Richards’ autobiography, Life. Now, there are two extremes!”

MUSICAL HERO
GRAHAM: “Well, it sounds pretty cliché right now, but my first concert ever was George Strait, and I was hooked every since. It made me sick hearing that he’ll be done touring in 2014 … such an inspiration.” RUSSELL: “Garth Brooks.”

PET PEEVE
GRAHAM: “Anything anyone does before 7 AM.” RUSSELL: “Lying.”

ACTOR TO PORTRAY YOU IN A BIOPIC
GRAHAM: “Johnny Depp. OK, he doesn’t look anything like me, but how frickin’ cool would that be?!” RUSSELL: “Kurt Russell, because I’m related to him … not really!”

FAVORITE MODE OF TRANSPORTATION
GRAHAM: “I love to fly.” RUSSELL: “My pickup truck.”

LUCKY CHARM
RUSSELL: “My Oklahoma Sooners money clip.” GRAHAM: “I don’t believe in luck. God seems to have everything good taken care of already.”

SOMETHING WE’D NEVER GUESS ABOUT YOU
RUSSELL: “I can break dance.” GRAHAM: “Guess.”

First Look: ‘Olympus Has Fallen; Trailer and Poster Starring Gerard Butler

The first trailer for Olympus Has Fallen has been released by FilmDistrict showing Gerard Butler as a disgraced Secret Service Agent protecting the US President (Aaron Eckhart) from an attack on the White House. It’s an action-heavy first trailer – and I worry that it gives away a little too much…

Directed by Antoine Fuqua, the cast also includes Morgan Freeman, Angela Bassett, Melissa Leo, Ashley Judd, and Rick Yune.

Olympus Has Fallen is coming to theaters on March 22, 2013.

The Plot:

When the White House (Secret Service Code: “Olympus”) is captured by a terrorist mastermind and the President is kidnapped, disgraced former Presidential guard Mike Banning finds himself trapped within the building. As our national security team scrambles to respond, they are forced to rely on Banning¹s inside knowledge to help retake the White House, save the President and avert an even bigger disaster.

That’s One Very Upset Baby…

Warning: this video clip from Conan is disgusting and if you’re a Kanye West or Kardashian family fan, you may find it totally inappropriate.

Disclaimer done, warning posted … Conan O’Brien pokes fun at the Kanye West/Kim Kardashian pregnancy with a video in which the baby is not at all happy to learn who its parents are. Discovering the news during a routine sonogram, the baby makes a break for it through the halls of the hospital, into a stolen police car, and down an LA freeway. Finally, the baby winds up on a motorcycle in Conan’s studio.

Details on the 9th Annual Puppy Bowl

Puppy Bowl IX Puppies

The best part of this year’s big bowl games won’t be the fact neither Manning made it or that the Super Bowl will be Tom Brady-less. No, the best part is that Puppy Bowl IX has added hedgehog cheerleaders to the overwhelmingly cute madness.

According to Animal Planet, viewers can expect to see hedgehogs on the sidelines, and, as an added bonus, Meep the Bird will be back live tweeting the game at @MeepTheBird. And new puppy cam angles will allow viewers to get up-close views of the puppies in action. Viewers will also be treated to the return of the water bowl cam, kiss cam, and an aerial view of all the action on the gridiron.

Plus, a special camera will “slow down every lovable frame of adorable action on the field while substitute players submerge their paws and rest their rumps in a special puppy hot tub, providing never-before-seen views of underwater puppy aquatics.”

All of the 63 puppy players, each from a shelter or rescue organization, will be competing for the BISSELL®MVP (Most Valuable Puppy) title, and they’ll have to play nice in order to be eligible to win the coveted award.

Commenting on this year’s big game, referee Dan Schachner said, “The puppy players viewed me more as fresh meat than a ref last year. It took a few hard-hitting plays for them to realize their overwhelming cuteness and basset hound eyes wouldn’t affect my judgment to fairly officiate this game.”

Puppies in this year’s starting lineup represent the Wayside Waifs Animal Rescue (Missouri), spcaLA (California), Tails of Love Animal Rescue (New York), Pitter Patter Animal Rescue (Wisconsin) and Big Fluffy Dog Rescue (Massachusetts).

The 2013 Puppy Bowl will also feature the BISSELL® KITTY HALF-TIME SHOW. Puppy Bowl IX will air on Sunday, February 3, from 3-5 PM (ET/PT) on Animal Planet.

A look back at Puppy Bowl VIII:

Film Starring – But Not Directed By – Robert Rodriguez Picked Up at Sundance

Breaking Glass Pictures came to Sundance ready to make deals, and make deals they did. Breaking Glass CEO Rich Wolff snatched up Amelia’s 25th for US release as well as Silver Case. Amelia‘s described as a dark comedy starring Robert Rodriguez, Jennifer Tilly, Danny Trejo (a favorite collaborator of Rodriguez’s), and Electra Avellan (Rodriguez’s niece-in-law). Silver Case was directed by Christian Filippella and stars Eric Roberts and Vincent DePaul.

Per the official announcement, here are the plots of both films:

Amelia’s 25th:

With a disconnected father, her live-in boyfriend struggling financially, and surviving in a complex of noisy neighbors who call themselves artists, her life could not seem bleaker. Spanning the course of one day, Amelia finds guidance and wisdom in the most curious places: a movie star, a photographer, casting directors, unemployed actors, plus-size sex shop owners, psychics, and a cross-dressing neighbor, all who lead her down the winding road of acceptance.

The cast also includes Margaret Cho, singer Ashley Parker Angel, Jon Abrahams, Karin Kelts, and Michael Biehn.

Silver Case:

The world of Hollywood scheming reaches a nasty low when a powerful producer (Roberts) hatches a plan to undermine the future success of his shady archrival. His plot begins with the delivery of a silver briefcase, which soon goes missing, setting off a chain of events. The Senator engages his best team to locate the package but doesn’t count on the tenacity of two thugs who have the mysterious prize in their possession.

Deadline’s reporting the sixth season of True Blood has added two pretty women to the show’s already huge cast. Jurnee Smollett will be playing Nicole Wright, a character who – according to Deadline – is “not concerned with money and more concerned with the common good and doing what’s right.”

Also joining the cast is Amelia Rose Blaire. Blaire will be playing the daughter of Louisiana Governor Truman Burrell (played by Arliss Howard). For now, Blaire’s role is in the recurring category.

HBO’s sexy vampire and shapeshifter series will return in June.

Blaire’s credits include 90210, Grimm, and Royal Pains. Smollett’s TV credits include Friday Night Lights and The Defenders. Her feature film credits include Eve’s Bayou, Gridiron Gang, The Great Debaters, and the 2013 film Tyler Perry’s Temptation.
