Max is transforming part of the San Diego Gaslamp District into Gotham for the 2024 San Diego Comic-Con. The streamer’s The Penguin will make its SDCC debut with a panel, a Gotham Ice truck with free Slush Puppies, and the interactive, immersive Iceberg Lounge experience.

“We are incredibly excited to tap into the rich and passionate fanbase in San Diego this year by introducing them to our new series, The Penguin,” said Pia Barlow, Executive Vice President, Originals Marketing, HBO and Max. “With our in-world activations, fans will have the chance to engross themselves in the underground world of Oz Cobbs’s Gotham, picking up where we left off in Matt Reeves’ The Batman, as we look to generate excitement for the series premiering this September.”

Series stars Cristin Milioti (Sofia Falcone) and Rhenzy Feliz (Victor Aguilar) will make the trek to San Diego for The Penguin panel on Saturday, July 27 in Hall H. Colin Farrell, the titular character and executive producer, will join the panel virtually. Executive producer Matt Reeves, showrunner and executive producer Lauren LeFranc, and executive producer Dylan Clark are scheduled to attend in person and discuss the series as well as launch the release of the series’ official trailer.

The Penguin premieres on Max this September and stars Farrell, Milioti, Feliz, Michael Kelly (Johnny Viti), Shohreh Aghdashloo (Nadia Maroni), Deirdre O’Connell (Francis Cobb), and Clancy Brown (Salvatore Maroni). The cast also includes James Madio (Milos Grapa), Scott Cohen (Luca Falcone), Michael Zegen (Alberto Falcone), Carmen Ejogo (Eve Karlo) and Theo Rossi (Dr. Julian Rush).

MAX’s 2024 SAN DIEGO COMIC-CON THE PENGUIN PLANS:

On Friday, July 26 and Saturday, July 27, Max, in partnership with Giant Spoon, will transform the Bloom Nightclub into Gotham’s famed Iceberg Lounge. Upon arrival at “The Iceberg Lounge” Experience, guests will enter the “Iceberg Descent,” created in partnership with BUCK and VT Pro Design, an immersive experience filled with special effects, haptic technology, interactivity and exclusive content displayed on Samsung big screen TVs. This multi-sensorial, subterranean descent drops users into Gotham’s notorious Iceberg Lounge lobby to navigate through the wreckage left by The Riddler at the end of The Batman (2022) film to reach the party deeper within.

Fans will party with Oz’s crew by venturing through the dark corners of the club for a chance to be inducted into the Penguin’s inner circle… if they dare. This multi-room experience offers complimentary drinks, live DJ sets, exclusive giveaways including a Jefferson’s Bourbon tasting, and photo opportunities including Oz’s iconic purple Maserati — giving partygoers an unprecedented glimpse into Gotham’s criminal underworld. By exploring the main club, guests can discover a password that will give them access to the inner sanctum, 44 Below, the club within the club, diving deeper into the world of The Penguin.

Max is providing 21+ adult fans with three ways to get a chance to receive an invitation to “The Iceberg Lounge” from today through Saturday, July 27:

‘We Live in Time’ Trailer: Florence Pugh and Andrew Garfield in a Collision of Hearts

Oscar nominee Florence Pugh and two-time Oscar nominee Andrew Garfield’s meet-cute is a little more violent than most in A24’s We Live in Time trailer. Pugh literally runs over Garfield, which ultimately leads to love.

“Almut (Florence Pugh, Little Women) and Tobias (Andrew Garfield, tick, tick…BOOM, Hacksaw Ridge) are brought together in a surprise encounter that changes their lives,” reads A24’s synopsis. “As they embark on a path challenged by the limits of time, they learn to cherish each moment of the unconventional route their love story has taken, in filmmaker John Crowley’s decade-spanning, deeply moving romance.”

Crowley directs from a screenplay by Olivier Award-winner Nick Payne. Adam Ackland, Leah Clarke, and Guy Heeley serve as producers. Executive producers include Benedict Cumberbatch, Anna Marsh, Ron Halpern, and Joe Naftalin. StudioCanal developed the film and is distributing it internationally.

We Live in Time will have its world premiere at the 49th Toronto International Film Festival on September 6, 2024. A24 will release the romantic comedy-drama domestically in theaters on October 11, 2024.

‘Fly Me to the Moon’ Review

Fly Me to the Moon
Scarlett Johansson and Channing Tatum in ‘Fly Me to the Moon’ (Photo Credit: Apple Original Films)

On September 12th, 1962, President John F. Kennedy delivered a speech at Rice University stressing the necessity of the U.S. going to the Moon. “We choose to go to the Moon in this decade and do the other things not because they are easy but because they are hard,” stated President Kennedy. The speech rallied the nation behind the mission and put NASA on alert that they now had a deadline to put a man on the moon before the decade was over.

That now iconic speech is the inspiration for Sony Pictures and Apple Original Films’ romantic comedy Fly Me to the Moon. Scarlett Johansson plays Kelly Jones, a marketing whiz who gets hired by Moe Berkus (Woody Harrelson) after a fallout with FORD Motor Company. Moe is a shady government operative who wants Kelly to boost NASA’s public image in 1969, years after public interest in putting a man on the Moon has faded.

Kelly believes she’s up to the task and heads down to Cape Canaveral, Florida. While having a drink at a restaurant, she notices a handsome stranger staring at her. He tosses out the pickup line, “You’re on fire,” instantly turning her off. Kelly’s ready to shoot him down when he explains, “No, miss, your book is on fire.” The stranger proves he’s a gentleman by putting out the fire using his own jacket. Kelly tries to buy him a drink as a thanks, but he takes off saying he’s got no time.

The following day, Kelly reports to Cape Kennedy and who does it turn out is the launch control director for Apollo 11? The handsome – and helpful – stranger, Cole Davis (Channing Tatum).

”What are you doing here?” he asks. “I thought we had a connection, so I tracked you down,” replies Kelly with a smile. She adds, “I’m kidding. I work here.” And so, after a fiery meet-cute, sparks fly between the Marketing Queen, who will do whatever she has to do to sell going to the moon to the American public, and the serious, no-nonsense launch director, who she drives up the wall.

It’s not long before the Apollo 11 crew and Cole’s staff warm up to Kelly and enjoy working with her on ad campaigns to promote NASA”s image. Kelly’s work on selling the magic and wonder of going to the moon, and her embrace by NASA personnel, makes it impossible for Cole to ignore the attraction he feels for her, and a romance begins.

However, as NASA moves closer to the launch date, Moe Berkus reappears on the scene. It seems Kelly’s marketing campaigns have worked and now Moe doesn’t want to take a chance on disappointing the public. Moe acknowledges the mission’s importance and proposes filming a fake landing and Moon walk as a backup plan. That backup film will be broadcast, if necessary, but NASA and Cole will need to be kept in the dark.

Charming, slick, and lighthearted, Fly Me to the Moon is a romantic comedy in the style of the rom-coms of the 1960s. Scarlett Johansson sparkles as Kelly Jones, a lovely marketing maven who knows how to manipulate and sweet-talk her clients and the public. It’s another wonderful performance by Johansson, one of the best actresses of her generation.

Channing Tatum delivers a solid performance as Cole Davis, the launch director who is determined to get his astronauts on the Moon and remains haunted by the loss of the astronauts in the Apollo 1 fire. Tatum and Johansson have terrific chemistry in the first half of the film, as she’s getting under his skin with her intrusive marketing ideas. Sadly, that spark disappears in the second half when the two finally engage in a romance. They’ve got more of a friendship vibe, and there isn’t any real sizzle once they move into a romantic relationship.

Woody Harrelson is perfectly cast as Moe Berkus, the shady government operative determined America will put a man on the Moon before Russia does. Even if they have to fake it. Harrelson and Johansson scenes together are some of the best in the movie.

Fly Me to the Moon suffers from an uneven tone, fluctuating between being a sly and engaging comedy to a serious and heartfelt romance. The movie is at its strongest as a light rom-com. That said, with another wonderful performance by Scarlet Johansson and plenty of laughs, Fly Me to the Moon is an enjoyable comedy that takes audiences back to the early years of the space race.

FX Fall Lineup Series Descriptions

The New York Times Presents: Lie To Fly – Terror took hold of an Alaska Airlines flight last year after a man was accused of trying to crash the plane mid-flight and kill 83 people onboard. However, the accused was not just any passenger—he was a professional pilot, Joseph Emerson, who was under the influence of psychedelic mushrooms after fearing mental health treatment would derail his career.

The New York Times explores Joseph Emerson’s story and follows a growing movement calling for reform of the FAA’s strict rules around pilot mental health, which they claim leaves the public at risk.

English Teacher – FX’s English Teacher is a comedy series created by Brian Jordan Alvarez, in which he stars as Evan Marquez, a high school teacher in Austin, Texas who often finds himself at the intersection of the personal, professional and political aspects of working at a high school.

Evan wants to be a principled person but often runs into trouble because of it. By Evan’s side at Morrison-Hensley High is his friend group of other teachers. Chief among them is his best friend Gwen Sanders (Stephanie Koenig), the eager and optimistic history teacher who tends to see the best in people, even when she probably shouldn’t. Then there’s PE teacher Markie Hillridge (Sean Patton). Though he can seem gruff and abrasive, beneath the surface, he possesses a knowledge of human nature that often proves valuable to Evan. When they aren’t disagreeing, Markie and Evan share a genuine bond… but they’re usually disagreeing.

Principal Grant Moretti (Enrico Colantoni) wants nothing more than peace and the path of least resistance—a path Evan is rarely willing to take. While Grant keeps his own opinions close to the vest, he respects Evan’s passion, even if it makes his own job more difficult. Guidance Counselor Rick (Carmen Christopher) barely wants to be at this school—he sees himself as an entrepreneur—but still loves hanging out with the other teachers. Evan’s ex-boyfriend Malcolm (Jordan Firstman) is a former teacher at Morrison. Wild and free-thinking, Malcolm often draws Evan back into a pseudo-relationship.

When Grant informs Evan that he is being placed under investigation for a long-dormant incident where he and Malcolm kissed in front of students, Evan suddenly feels that he’s under a microscope and is being targeted for his sexuality. Evan is left with one rule to abide by: no relationships with faculty… only to meet Harry (Langston Kerman), a charming new teacher who seems to be interested in him.

Over the eight-episode season, we follow Evan as he navigates his relationships, his students and his fellow faculty and tries to answer the question: can you really be your full self at your job?

The Old Man – In season two of FX’s The Old Man, former CIA agent Dan Chase (Jeff Bridges) and former FBI Assistant Director Harold Harper (John Lithgow) set off on their most important mission to date — to recover Emily Chase (Alia Shawkat) after she is kidnapped by Faraz Hamzad (Navid Negahban), a powerful Afghan tribal leader. With all three men claiming her as their daughter, Emily finds herself in an identity crisis that has dire implications.

As Chase and Harper fight their way to get to Emily, Hamzad is forced to make decisions that could endanger his family and the village he has led faithfully for a lifetime. Khadija (Jacqueline Antaramian), Hamzad’s sister and trusted advisor, is concerned about the path her brother has taken and what it will cost them. As the stakes get higher and more secrets are uncovered, Zoe McDonald (Amy Brenneman) makes surprising moves after having been drawn into a new world by Chase. Meanwhile, Julian Carson (Gbenga Akinnagbe) is disillusioned by his former role and finds himself at a crossroads with a path he hadn’t imagined for himself.

‘Longlegs’ Review: Starring Maika Monroe and Nicolas Cage

Maika Monroe in Longlegs

It’s been almost ten years since Osgood Perkins, son of the late Anthony Perkins, made his awesomely haunting debut film The Blackcoat’s Daughter. Since then, he’s played around with television and a couple of average movies, but now, he’s back with the much-hyped Longlegs.

Longlegs is about a young FBI agent named Lee Harker (Maika Monroe from It Follows) who, through either intuition or psychic abilities, seems to have an uncanny knack for knowing things. She is assigned to a case involving a serial killer who calls himself Longlegs (Renfield’s Nicolas Cage), and as she gets deeper into the investigation, the killer starts to take a personal interest in her as well. She soon learns that the case is about much more than simply a maniac who murders families.

Oz Perkins lets the viewer know exactly what they’re in for with the pre-credits scene in Longlegs. A young girl wanders outside into the snow and looks around her yard. After showing a couple of shots of empty parts of the landscape, the camera cuts to Longlegs as the musical score shouts a loud, dissonant chord. It’s more startling than scary, but it does pack a punch and sets the tone for the entire movie.

Most of the scares in the movie are constructed this way. They come suddenly with a jump cut and a sting of volume, so they’re more surprising and uncomfortable than actually scary. That’s not to say that they aren’t effective, but they’re a bit cheap in their execution. And that seems to be the point. It’s almost as if Perkins is showing off – you know the jump is coming, and he still gets you.

Longlegs is basically The Silence of the Lambs if Clarice Starling was psychic and Buffalo Bill was into cryptography and the occult. There’s a system and a method to what Longlegs is doing, and he taunts Lee effortlessly and endlessly while he’s doing it, seemingly daring her to catch him. The lo-fi, nineties aesthetic and the overall coldness of the film also help with the Lambs comparison. Longlegs is the B-movie version of the Jonathan Demme classic.

There’s a strange stiffness to Maika Monroe’s performance that, at first, seems like she’s phoning it in with a sterile line reading. But as the movie moves on and more of her background is established, it becomes clearer that her performance is actually brilliant in its subtlety. It’s sort of like Shelley Duvall’s portrayal of Wendy Torrance in The Shining; once you realize the character’s arc and what they’re going through (and what they’ve been through), it changes the whole dynamic of the performance. Monroe’s clinical stoicism has a purpose.

And then, there’s Nic Cage. He makes for a creepy maniac. Even when covered in borderline ridiculous prosthetics and bleach-white makeup, he is able to make the audience’s skin crawl with just his sing-song screamy vocalizations. His awkwardness makes the viewer uncomfortable. It’s a truly unsettling performance that, really, only Nicolas Cage could deliver.

Longlegs is one of those conveyor-belt movies where the audience just hops on and holds on for the entirety of the tension-filled trip, just waiting for Perkins to reveal his next trick. And his next trick is most likely something that even the movie’s psychic main character won’t see coming. While it can’t really be called a “fun” movie, the Longlegs ride sure is entertaining.

“The Hargreeves siblings have scattered after the climactic showdown at the Hotel Oblivion led to a complete reset of their timeline. Stripped of their powers, each is left to fend for themselves and find a new normal — with wildly varying degrees of success. Yet the trappings of their uncanny new world prove too hard to ignore for very long,” reads Netflix’s synopsis. “Their father Reginald, alive and well, has stepped out of the shadows and into the public eye, overseeing a powerful and nefarious business empire. A mysterious association known as The Keepers holds clandestine meetings believing the reality they’re living in is a lie and a great reckoning is coming. As these strange new forces conspire around them, the Umbrella Academy must come together one last time — and risk upsetting the shaky peace they’ve all endured so much to secure — to finally set things right.”

Based on Gerard Way and Gabriel Bá’s Dark Horse comic book series, The Umbrella Academy series was created by Steve Blackman. Blackman serves as showrunner and executive producer. Additional executive producers include Jennifer Cecil, Mike Richardson, Keith Goldberg, Scott Stuber, Beau Bauman, Pascal Verschooris, Jesse McKeown, Abbey Morris, and Jeremy Webb.
