‘MaXXXine’ Review: Ti West Sticks the Trilogy’s Landing

MaXXXine Star Mia Goth

First, we got director Ti West’s love letter to seventies slashers X. Next, he and leading lady Mia Goth teamed up again for the classic Hollywood tribute bloodbath Pearl. Now, the two complete their trilogy with MaXXXine.

MaXXXine sees X final girl Maxine Minx (Goth) making her splash in the Los Angeles adult film industry. However, never wanting to “accept a life that (she) doesn’t deserve,” Maxine goes after and lands a role in a legitimate film, albeit a B-grade horror sequel. When the people around her start turning up dead, Maxine fears that the life and tragedy she left behind in Texas may have caught up with her in Hollywood.

Ti West has created the perfect conclusion to the Maxine Minx story with MaXXXine. Like the way in which the movie Pearl defined the character of Pearl in X, X defines the character of Maxine in MaXXXine. Maxine is both driven and haunted by the events of her past, and her ambition is admirable. She’s also a very strong character, not the typical horror Final Girl, but a take-no-prisoners type.

This character strength feeds the narrative structure of MaXXXine. The story is part Giallo slasher, part vigilante thriller, part crime drama, and part occult mystery. Although that may sound schizophrenic, it really isn’t. Despite this subgenre mashup, MaXXXine is a very coherent and singular movie. Maxine is at the center of it all, and while she does find herself vulnerable at times, she’s also more than capable of dealing with whatever comes her way. Sometimes in a very brutal and unflinching fashion.

Like X and Pearl before it, MaXXXine is an homage to its time period. It’s set in 1985 amidst the Satanic Panic scare that had parents worried about music, movies, and games. The Night Stalker/Richard Ramirez serial killer case also hangs over every minute of the movie’s plot, seemingly running in tandem with the events of the film. Between West’s snapshot of the social turmoil and the note-perfect soundtrack (which includes bangers by Frankie Goes to Hollywood, ZZ Top, Animotion, and Kim Carnes), MaXXXine is a cool time capsule of the mid-eighties that still manages to feel modern.

Visually, West captures the flamboyant suspense of Italian horror and the neon-soaked style of the Hollywood action thriller, all wrapped up in a slick nod to filmmaking itself. Much of the movie takes place on the Universal movie lot, with Goth being chased down fake streets and through false buildings. She even winds up at the Psycho house up the hill from the Bates Motel at one point. West also throws little winks to everything from Chinatown to The Brain that Wouldn’t Die into the mix, showing that he is, above all, both a fan and a student of classic film.

While Mia Goth is undoubtedly and deservedly the lead, the supporting cast in MaXXXine is one for the ages. Kevin Bacon is a private detective. Giancarlo Esposito is Maxine’s agent. Michelle Monaghan and Bobby Cannavale are police detectives. Elizabeth Debicki is a big-time Hollywood director. Halsey and Lily Collins are fellow actresses. Sophie Thatcher is a makeup FX artist. Everywhere you look in MaXXXine there’s a familiar face.

Just as one might expect from a Ti West movie, MaXXXine is full of brutal, gruesome violence. There’s one scene in particular that will have the entire male audience cringing (and, quite possibly, the entire female audience applauding loudly). The violence is spirited and amusing, almost joyful in its presentation, a fact that is especially poignant with the subtext of censorship in the eighties flowing underneath the surface of the entire movie. MaXXXine is one of the video nasties that would have been banned if it had existed when it was set.

Horror sequels get a bad rap, and honestly, most of them deserve it. But the X/Pearl/MaXXXine trilogy is all quality. And Ti West really sticks the landing with MaXXXine.

Evil Season 4 Episode 7
Katja Herbers as Kristen Bouchard and Aasif Mandvi as Ben Shakir in ‘Evil’ season 4 episode 7 (Photo Credit: Alyssa Longchamp/Paramount+)

Paramount+’s Evil season four episode seven is going to “delves into the show’s epistemology,” so says the show’s co-creator Robert King. Episode seven, “How to Bandage a Wound,” will stream on Thursday, July 4, 2024. And, no, there still isn’t any word on a streamer or network swooping in to save the series.

Season four stars Katja Herbers as Kristen Bouchard, Mike Colter as David Acosta, Aasif Mandvi as Ben Shakir, Michael Emerson as Leland Townsend, and Christine Lahti as Sheryl. Andrea Martin stars as Sister Andrea, Kurt Fuller is Dr. Boggs, Brooklyn Shuck is Lynn Bouchard, Skylar Gray is Lila Bouchard, Maddy Crocco is Lexis Bouchard, Patrick Brammall is Andy Bouchard, and Dalya Knapp plays Laura Bouchard.

“How to Bandage a Wound” Plot: Ben and David ride along with a train engineer convinced he’s being haunted on the tracks, while Kristen cares for her mother. Ben begins to question his sanity as gaps in his memory create turmoil in his relationship with Renee.

In the new season of Evil, Kristen, David and Ben continue to assess cases that involve wayward technology, possessed pigs, demonic oppression and infestation, a dance muse conjured by alleged witches and an evil relic. Throughout, Leland attempts to lure Kristen into raising a baby antichrist who was conceived with her ovum. David is recruited by the Vatican’s secret service to “remote view” a paranormal ability to see the unseen in order to detect evil. Ben is hit by an ion beam, causing him to see visions of a taunting jinn until he discovers an unusual solution to banish it.

Finally, all three realize they only have a few weeks left to assess cases because the parish has decided to disband the team due to a lack of funds. This culminates in one last confrontation with Leland and the 60 families that make up Evil in the modern world.

‘Jackpot!’ Trailer Starring Awkwafina and John Cena

Awkwafina decides it’s okay to trust John Cena since he looks like a bulldog a witch put a spell on and turned into a human in Amazon MGM Studios’ trailer for Jackpot! (formerly known as Grand Death Lotto). Apparently in 2030, California will allow anyone who kills a lottery winner the right to claim their money. And guess who turns out to be an unlucky winner? It’s not the bewitched bulldog.

The cast also includes Simu Liu, Ayden Mayeri, Donald Elise Watkins, Sam Asghari, and Murray Hill. Bridesmaids‘ Paul Feig directs from a screenplay by Rob Yescombe.

“In the near future, a ‘Grand Lottery’ has been newly established in California – the catch: kill the winner before sundown to legally claim their multi-billion dollar jackpot. When Katie Kim (Awkwafina) moves to Los Angeles, she mistakenly finds herself with the winning ticket,” reads Amazon MGM Studios’ synopsis. “Desperate to survive the hordes of jackpot hunters, she reluctantly joins forces with amateur lottery protection agent Noel Cassidy (Cena) who will do everything in his power to get her to sundown in exchange for a piece of her prize. However, Noel must face off with his slick rival Louis Lewis (Liu), who also seeks to collect Katie’s commission at all costs.”

Paul Feig, Joe Roth, Jeff Kirschenbaum, and Laura Fischer produce, with John Cena, Michelle Morrissey, Rob Yescombe, and Zack Roth executive producing.

Jackpot! premieres on Prime Video on August 15, 2024.

The trailer launch was accompanied by details on a Jackpot!-inspired sweepstakes running July 2, 2024 through August 15th at 11:59pm ET. Head over to TheJackpotJackpot.com for more details on how to enter for a chance to wing a 10-ounce gold bar, cash, and Buffalo Wild Wings for a decade.

‘Sirens’ Attracts Kevin Bacon and Glenn Howerton

Kevin Bacon (City on a Hill) and Glenn Howerton (It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia) are the newest additions to Netflix’s Sirens, based on series creator Molly Smith Metzler’s play Elemeno Pea. The casting announcement comes just one day after it was announced Julianne Moore (Mary & George), Meghann Fahy (The White Lotus), and Milly Alcock (https://www.showbizjunkies.com/tv/house-of-the-dragon-season-1-episode-1-recap-review/) had joined the cast of Metzler’s limited series.

Metzler is writing, executive producing, and will serve as showrunner. Additional executive producers on the female-driven dark comedy include Dani Gorin, Tom Ackerley, and Margot Robbie for LuckyChap. Emmy winner Nicole Kassell (Watchmen) is on board to direct episodes one and two and will executive produce.

“Devon thinks her sister Simone has a really creepy relationship with her new boss, the enigmatic socialite Michaela Kell. Michaela’s cult-ish life of luxury is like a drug to Simone, and Devon has decided it’s time for an intervention,” reads Netflix’s synopsis. “When Devon tracks her sister down to say WTF, she has no idea what a formidable opponent Michaela will be. Told over the course of one explosive weekend at The Kells’ lavish beach estate, Sirens is an incisive, sexy, and darkly funny exploration of women, power, and class.”

Netflix offered this description of the limited series’ characters:

  • Julianne Moore as Michaela Kell: Michaela is a philanthropist and animal activist who runs island high society and is the wife to billionaire Peter Kell. Her relationship with her assistant, Simone, seems too close for comfort.
  • Meghann Fahy as Devon DeWitt: Devon is on a downward spiral back in her hometown. She is funny, resilient, and fiercely protective — especially of her younger sister Simone.
  • Milly Alcock as Simone DeWitt: Simone is Devon’s sharp, charming younger sister who has hit the jackpot working as a personal assistant to a billionaire.
  • Kevin Bacon as Peter Kell: Peter Kell comes from an old money family and is the highest-status person in every room he enters. He’s an avid outdoorsman who enjoys the occasional joint.
  • Glenn Howerton as Ethan Corbin: Ethan Corbin II is a dear friend of the Kells and lifelong bachelor who lives next door. He’s a regular at the yacht club and he’s rapidly burning through his trust fund.

‘Despicable Me 4’ Review: A Disappointing Entry in the Usually Entertaining Franchise

Despicable Me 4

The ex-criminal mastermind Gru, his daughters, and those wacky minions are back for another wild adventure in Illumination Entertainment’s Despicable Me 4. And this time, the gang is taking on suburban life.

Gru (Steve Carell) is still working for AVI (Anti-Villain League) and loving life with his family. He’s also busy trying to connect with the newest addition to their clan, baby Gru Jr. However, Gru’s life gets turned upside down when he learns that master criminal Maxime Le Mal (Will Ferrel), who Gru helped capture, has escaped and is determined to exact revenge on Gru and his family.

So, Gru uproots his family and settles down in a quiet suburban town called Mayflower, assuming new names and occupations. Gru’s now a solar salesman, and his wife, Lucy (Kristen Wiig), is a hairstylist. Margo (Miranda Cosgrove), Edith (Dana Gaier), and Agnes (Madison Skyy Polan) are not happy about the move or about taking on new identities.

“Think of it as an adventure,” suggests #GirlDad Gru, attempting to put a fun spin on their impossible situation. The big move also affects the minions, and just three stay with Gru and his family. The others return to AVL headquarters to get back to work.

While trying to blend in and make friends with their new neighbors, Gru meets Poppy (Joey King), who turns out to be an aspiring villain. And Poppy knows exactly who Gru really is. Poppy knows she’s got the upper hand and threatens to expose Gru and his loved one unless he teams up with her to execute a big heist.

Meanwhile, Maxime and his wife (Sofia Vergara) hunt down Gru and get their revenge by kidnapping Gru Jr.

Loud, chaotic, and soulless, Despicable Me 4 is a messy, even irritating, addition to the animated film series. It lacks all the charm and heart of the first film, replacing those key ingredients with too many silly, underdeveloped subplots, and zany antics.

The voice talent is still top-notch, led once again by Steve Carell as Gru, the once sinister master villain who is now a loving husband and father. His only desire at this point is to keep his family safe and happy. Carell helped create and bring to life this hilarious animated character and still portrays him flawlessly.

Joey King is a pleasant new addition as Poppy, the rising teenage villain who really idolizes the old Gru and yearns to be just like him. The heist she plans with Gru is one of the few high points in the film. But, unfortunately, it’s over way too soon and turns out to be nothing more than a minor subplot.

Another silly and unnecessary subplot involves the creation of the “Mega Minions” — regular minions who undergo a Captain America-like experiment to create a new super crime-fighting team. Their storyline feels forced and out of place within the film.

The greatest crime of the film might be the lack of attention (and screen time) given to Gru’s daughters. Once central to the Despicable Me films, Margo, Edith, and Agnes are barely involved in the antics in this fourth installment. They’re basically reduced to just being background players. None of the girls receive a meaningful storyline that allows for character growth.

Overloaded with subplots that go nowhere and missing the appeal and spirit of the earlier films, Despicable Me 4 is a disappointing and forgettable entry in Illumination’s animated film series.

  • Jack Gleeson (he/him) is PUCK, a malevolent hobgoblin who serves as the royal jester to King Auberon of Faerie. Puck is fascinated by mortals and enjoys nothing more than making sport of them for his own amusement. He’s also the inspiration for Shakespeare’s Puck in A Midsummer Night’s Dream.
  • Indya Moore (she/her) is WANDA, a professional driver and security agent for an exclusive travel firm. Wanda proves herself to be an indispensable guide on an Endless road trip to the waking world.
  • Steve Coogan (he/him) is the voice of BARNABAS, the canine companion of the Endless’s prodigal brother. Barnabas is loyal and loving, but an outspoken cynic. He’s man’s best friend and man’s sharpest critic.

“When the Sandman, aka Dream (Tom Sturridge) — the powerful cosmic being who controls all our dreams — is unexpectedly captured and held prisoner for over a century, he must journey across different worlds and timelines to fix the chaos his absence has caused,” reads Netflix’s season one synopsis. Season two plot details haven’t been released.

Allan Heinberg serves as writer, executive producer, and showrunner, with Neil Gaiman and David S. Goyer also executive producing. Heinberg, Gaiman, and Goyer developed the series. Jamie Childs is the director.

She is lured back to the open plains by her friend, Javi (Ramos) to test a groundbreaking new tracking system.
