Beasts of the Southern Wild is one of five nominees just announced for the 3rd Annual Gotham Independent Film Audience Award hosted by the Independent Filmmaker Project (IFP). The Audience Award recognizes outstanding independent films and is the only award at the Gotham Independent Film Awards that is decided upon by the public.

Says Joana Vicente, Executive Director of the IFP. “For the IFP, it is the perfect opportunity to offer five publicly lauded films, which have been spotlighted on the festival circuit by the viewing public, yet another platform to garner audience support. We are very proud to be able to offer an award that reflects the voice of collective film-goers as part of the Gotham Independent Film Awards.”

31 “audience award-winning films from the top 50 US and Canadian film festivals” were available to nominate in the initial round of open voting. That field was narrowed to the following five films that received the most number of votes. Voting to determine the winner is open now through November 18, 2012 at 11:59pm ET at gotham.ifp.org/audience_award.

The winner will be announced during the Gotham Awards ceremony on November 26th.

Are You Ready for ‘Deals from the Darkside?’

Syfy Logo

There’s absolutely no way I would bring any of these items into my home, but for people who like to collect unusual artifacts Syfy’s got a new series right up your alley. The relic-hunting reality series Deals from the Darkside premieres on November 7, 2012 at 10pm ET/PT.

Season one consists of 13 half-hour episodes featuring, according to Syfy, some of the “creepiest and most notorious antiques and relics in existence.” Items that collector Steve Santini comes in contact with during the series include a knife claimed to have been used by Jack the Ripper, a deck chair off the Titanic, and a real executioner’s sword.

The Plot:

Follow along as Santini, his sidekick Robert “Biker Rob” Duguay and researcher Stef Proctor travel far and wide to call on experts to prove that the artifacts are (or aren’t) what they’re claimed to be. When Santini isn’t driving a hard bargain for the real deal relics, he engages in his other passion – escapology. Santini, who’s been dubbed the world’s most extreme escape artist by Ripley’s Believe It or Not, works with dangerous materials such as machete blades, power drills and water chambers as he perfects his craft in this most unique of hobbies.

Upcoming Episodes:

“Titanic Deck Chair” – Wednesday, November 7 at 10 PM ET/PT
A seller approaches Steve Santini claiming to be in possession of an authentic deck chair salvaged from the Titanic. Santini’s quest to determine whether or not the chair is the real deal leads him to the world famous Titanic Museum in Branson, Missouri.

“Houdini Handcuffs” – Wednesday, November 7 at 10:30 PM ET/PT
Steve Santini gets the rare chance to purchase Victorian handcuffs said to have been used by his idol, Harry Houdini. Santini’s efforts to authenticate the cuffs include a visit to Scranton, PA to hook up with some quirky Houdini experts and a pit stop at Houdini’s grave in Queens, New York.

Upcoming episodes this season involve a Mohawk axe and a shrunken head (November 14 at 10 PM), a “dark relics” auction where an executioner’s hood and an antique coffin are on the block (November 14 at 10:30 PM) and a replica Inquisition cloak that may turn out to be a bona fide original (November 21 at 10 PM).

The NBC special Hurricane Sandy: Coming Together attracted big name performers and big donations from viewers. Together with the American Red Cross, NBC Universal hosted the live one-hour special across the network on Friday, November 2, 2012 and raised almost $23 million to help out victims of Hurricane Sandy.

According to NBC, a new record was set for “individual donations by phone, text and online” coming into the Red Cross during the 8pm to 12am time period on November 2nd. More donations were tallied during that timeframe than during any previous benefit telethon of the past five years.

“We are incredibly grateful and humbled by this outpouring of support for those who are suffering as a result of Superstorm Sandy,” stated American Red Cross Chief Marketing Officer Peggy Dyer. “Our preliminary results of nearly $23 million raised are an extraordinary example of how the American people pull together in times of disaster. Their generous donations will go directly to those in need, and we urge the public to continue to give. We also thank the dedicated and talented team at NBCUniversal for the millions of people they have helped through this telethon.”

Matt Lauer hosted the special fundraiser which included performances by Christina Aguilera, Mary J. Blige, Jon Bon Jovi, Billy Joel, Joe Perry, Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, Sting and Steven Tyler. Other celebs that took part included Kevin Bacon, Jimmy Fallon, Tina Fey, Whoopi Goldberg, Jon Stewart and Brian Williams.

More on American Red Cross:

“The American Red Cross response to Sandy is very large and will be very costly, affecting a massive area spanning much of the eastern half of the country. Financial donations help the American Red Cross provide shelter, food, emotional support and other assistance to those affected by disasters like Hurricane Sandy. To donate, people can visit redcross.org, call 1-800-HELPNOW or text the word REDCROSS to 90999 to make a $10 donation.”
