Not All Superheroes Star in Their Own Movies

American Human AssociationNot all superheroes wear capes but some of them wear collars, and on September 12, 2012 a handful of unsung heroes took the stage in Gothall Hall in New York City to accept awards for doing what they do best, helping those in need. The annual American Humane Association Hero Dog Awards(TM) spotlight heroic canines who have saved lives, comforted those in need, and even served their country.

Eight dogs were singled out for honors, and humans were also recognized for their contributions to helping animals. Among those honored at the event was Masaaki Tanaka, Deputy President, Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group, who was given the American Humane Association’s highest honor, the National Humanitarian Medal. “Without his vital help, there would have been much more despair – and much less hope – for thousands of frightened, hungry, and homeless animals,” stated American Humane Association President and CEO Dr. Robin Ganzert. “Because of his intervention, critically needed support of the animals displaced and left behind when that cataclysm occurred, will, with our help, go on for the foreseeable future.”

SAG-AFTRA was also recognized for protecting animals who work in the entertainment industry and underwriting the AHA’s “No Animals Were Harmed®” certification program. “We have a 99.98 percent safety rate for animals on our sets and have protected so many of America’s most beloved non-human stars of the small and silver screen,” said Dr. Ganzert. “But we couldn’t have done it alone. We are so fortunate to have a partner in SAG-AFTRA that values all the actors who add so much joy, drama, and pathos to our culture and to our lives.”

Keith Urban Leaves ‘The Voice’

Is he clearing the way for a role as a judge on American Idol? Only time will tell, but it is clear Keith Urban is leaving Australia’s The Voice.

Country singer Urban announced he will not be returning as a mentor next season, saying in a statement to Australia’s Nine Network: “I’ve been so fortunate to have been a part of The Voice. And as much as I’d love to do it again, it’s clear that the recording and promoting of a new album, a tour, and other commitments will keep me from being a part of the second season.”

“Other commitments?” Is that a hint he’ll be signing on to Fox’s American Idol?

Announcing his departure, Urban thanked everyone who sang on the show and thanked his The Voice family – Darren [Percival], Delta [Goodrem], Joel [Madden] and Seal – for making his time on the singing competition series “fun.”

Fox is going to have to tie down the judges for the upcoming season of American Idol soon. Only Mariah Carey and Randy Jackson (who was relegated to a mentor role at one point but is now back on the judges panel) are officially signed on. Nicki Minaj is reportedly still in contract negotiations, and rumors are swirling Urban will take a fourth chair.

Not so fast… Of course we don’t want to spoil the surprise for any America’s Got Talent fan who hasn’t seen the seventh season finale yet. Now’s your chance to escape from reading this article, if you don’t want to know who actually emerged the winner in a tough race to the finish.

And now, on to the news of the winner:

First-time judge Howard Stern joined Howie Mandel and Sharon Osbourne (who made her final appearance as a judge with the September 13, 2012 episode) in enjoying/enduring performances by wannabe singers, actors, squirrels, circus acts, and others in search of the AGT 7th season winner. And after the dust had settled it all came down to a battle between sand story artist Joe Castillo from Richmond, KY, comedian Tom Cotter from New York, Earth Harp inventor William Close from Los Angeles, artist David Garibaldi and his CMYK’s from Sacramento, dancing group The Untouchables from Miami, and the traveling dog act Olate Dogs. And following performances by OneRepublic, Justin Bieber, Green Day, and Flo Rida, the winner was crowned: the Olate Dogs took home the $1 million grand prize and will be headlining a show at the The Palazzo Las Vegas Resort and Hotel.

In case you haven’t been following this season, here’s the scoop on the Olate Dogs:

“Olate Dogs is a high-energy, fast-paced dog act filled with impressive pet tricks led by Richard Olate, 55, and his son Nicholas Olate, 19. Richard grew up in South America in a poor family. A third generation circus performer, Richard has performed since he was 12, and through hard work and constant struggle, he made it to the United States at the age of 33. His dream is to have his own dog variety show, and he currently has four completely different dog acts.”

After being crowned the winner, the Olates said, “This has been the end and beginning to our journey. America’s Got Talent has been the most exceptional experience that either of us has ever been on; this is a dream come true after many years of hard work.”

The Olate Dogs, Tom Cotter, Earth Harpist William Close, Joe Castillo and his Sand Art, Lightwire Theatre, and illusionist Spencer Horseman are confirmed to perform at The Palazzo during the Las Vegas show’s eight week run which kicks off on September 26, 2012.

Movie Review: Finding Nemo in 3D

Finding Nemo

Reviewed by Kevin Finnerty

“Just keep swimming, just keep swimming,” says Dory (voiced by Ellen DeGeneres), a Pacific regal blue tang trying to cheer up Marlin (Albert Brooks), a clown fish who is desperately searching the sea for his little son Nemo (captured in the Great Barrier Reef by a scuba diver), in the Disney/Pixar animated classic Finding Nemo returning to the big screen in 3D.

The story is the same: overprotective dad Marlin sets out against all odds to search the ocean for clues to find his son who’s actually no longer in the ocean at all but in a fish tank in the dentist’s office who captured him in the open sea. Scared but not alone, Nemo quickly makes friends with the other fish in the tank including Gill (Willem Dafoe) who’s determined to get Nemo, himself, and the rest of the fish out of the tank and into the big blue ocean.

Meanwhile, back at sea Marlin continues his journey with only one companion, a friendly, well-meaning but very forgetful Dory. Together they dodge sharks, swim through a mine field of jellyfish, and stop at nothing to find little Nemo.

Funny, sweet, and heartfelt, Finding Nemo is one of the very best animated films to come from the Disney/Pixar studios. This is still a wonderful animated adventure for kids of all ages. It has a stellar cast lending their voices and bringing these extremely original characters to life. Albert Brooks is perfect as Marlin, the overprotective father who’s afraid of almost everything in the ocean and has to rise above his fears in order to try to find his son. Ellen DeGeneres is hilarious as Dory, the absent-minded regal blue tang who travels with Marlin trying to help him find his son. She has without a doubt the best lines and the most laughs in the entire movie.

The film also looks breathtaking with all the bright colors and the designs of the different sea life. The underwater animation is completely stunning.

So the real question remains: is it worth going to the cinema and paying the extra few dollars to see Finding Nemo up on the big screen and in 3D? It all depends. If you already own the DVD of the film and have children who’ve watched it time and time again, then the answer is NO. Since the movie wasn’t originally filmed in 3D, the audience never really gets the full 3D effect while watching it. A perfect example of this is when Marlin and Dory are trying to out-swim a huge whale who’s about to swallow them. The audience does not get the feeling that they are about to be swallowed up as well, which they should had they been watching a film shot in 3D. But if you have small children who have never seen Finding Nemo, then the answer is YES. Watching the action and underwater adventure up on the big screen in a darkened movie theatre is the best way for kids to be introduced to Marlin, Dory, Gill, Bruce the Shark, and, of course, little Nemo.

Finding Nemo was re-released in 3D in theaters on September 14, 2012.

Matchbox Twenty Debuts at #1

Matchbox Twenty NorthMatchbox Twenty’s done something they’ve never accomplished before – the group scored a #1 spot on Billboard’s Top 200 list for the first time in their career with North. “To be a band that put out our first album in 1996, and have our first #1 in 2012 feels like we are doing something right,” said frontman Rob Thomas.

The group continues to be busy doing publicity in support of the album’s release, heading to the Ellen DeGeneres Show on October 2nd. Tom Donahue’s documentary Casting By has been picked up by HBO Documentary Films for broadcast in the U.S. Currently on the festival circuit, Donahue’s documentary had its world premiere at the 2012 Toronto International Film Festival.

The film shines the spotlight on a group of entertainment industry professionals who hardly ever make the news, get interviewed, or are recognized for their work: casting directors. Actors and directors who contribute their personal observations about the mostly unacknowledged group include Martin Scorsese, Woody Allen, Clint Eastwood, Glenn Close, Robert Duvall, Jeff Bridges, Al Pacino, Robert De Niro, Diane Lane, Bette Midler and John Travolta.

Discussing the film and its acquisition by HBO, director Donahue stated: “The creation of Casting By was a collaborative process made in the spirit of the late Marion Dougherty to recognize these unsung heroes. We could not be more excited to have found the perfect home for our film at HBO.”

Donahue’s currently working on Thank You for Your Service which focuses on the treatment of veterans, the reintegration of returning soldiers into society, and how the process has changed over the decades [per CreativeChaos.

Tom Hanks to Narrate Killing Lincoln

Killing Lincoln Book CoverOscar winner Tom Hanks is on board to host and narrate Killing Lincoln for the National Geographic Channel. The film is based on the bestselling book Killing Lincoln: The Shocking Assassination That Changed America Forever written by Bill O’Reilly and Martin Dugard and tells the story of Lincoln’s assassination by John Wilkes Booth.

The film is executive produced by Tony and Ridley Scott’s Scott Free Productions and will be directed by Adrian Moat (the TV documentary Gettysburg).

“It’s odd to say the killing of Abraham Lincoln is an unknown story, but it may as well be,” explained Hanks said in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter. “The depth of the intrigue, the breadth of the conspiracy and the bare-naked exposure of human nature is so timeless, it’s a wonder how that seminal tragedy in our history could ever be explained in a few sentences: ‘Ford’s Theater… John Wilkes Booth,’ etc. The murder of Lincoln is not a passage of our history — it was a signpost of our American character, then, now and forever.”

“Only Hanks can add that unique poise, intrigue and dynamism that are his trademark to a film about one of the most significant, life-changing events in America’s young history,” stated producer Ridley Scott. “His mastery always shines through and we can’t wait for viewers to be engrossed in this story.”

Billy Campbell (The Killing) plays President Lincoln and Jesse Johnson stars as John Wilkes Booth. National Geographic will air Killing Lincoln in 2013.
