Gangnam Style Video Parody Costs El Monte Lifeguards Their Jobs

Is rapper Psy’s “Gangnam Style” the new “Call Me Maybe” when it comes to providing fodder for video parodies? If so, better be careful about using your place of work to shoot your music video. El Monte lifeguards found out the hard way just how harsh the repercussions can be following the posting of their “Lifeguard Style” video on the internet.

13 El Monte lifeguards and their supervisor (who wasn’t in the video) are fighting to get their jobs back after being fired because they shot the video when they were off-duty but while using the El Monte Aquatic Center as the setting for the video. None of the lifeguards are doing anything offensive in the video, but El Monte Park and Recreation officials apparently don’t have a sense of humor when it comes to the use of their pool. The lifeguards were fired for using city resources without permission.

From the recently created Facebook page “Bring Back the 14 El Monte Lifeguards”:

“All footage was recorded off the clock during breaks and free time. The city manager OFFICIALLY fired us for using the facility for private use and wearing uniforms in public while off-duty. Afterwards we were UNOFFICIALLY told that our music video was both ‘disgusting’ and an ’embarrassment to the city of El Monte.'”

Rapper Psy’s original “Gangnam Style” video has been viewed 169 million times and has even been parodied by the Oregon Duck.

New Trailer for ‘The Walking Dead’ Season 3

AMC’s showing off this new trailer for season three of The Walking Dead which debuts on October 14, 2012. One thing that can quickly be discerned from this new clip is that season three promises more zombie killing in new and gory ways.

After complaints about season two’s slow start and how the group of survivors seemed just to be spinning their wheels for episodes on end, it appears season three will get right to the zombie-killing action.

The Plot:

Based on the comic book series written by Robert Kirkman and published by Image Comics, The Walking Dead tells the story of the months and years that follow after a zombie apocalypse, and follows a group of survivors, led by police officer Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln), who travel in search of a safe and secure home.

The cast also includes Sarah Wayne Callies, Laurie Holden, Steven Yeun, Norman Reedus, Chandler Riggs, Lauren Cohan, Scott Wilson, Robert Singleton, and Melissa McBride.

Not All Superheroes Star in Their Own Movies

American Human AssociationNot all superheroes wear capes but some of them wear collars, and on September 12, 2012 a handful of unsung heroes took the stage in Gothall Hall in New York City to accept awards for doing what they do best, helping those in need. The annual American Humane Association Hero Dog Awards(TM) spotlight heroic canines who have saved lives, comforted those in need, and even served their country.

Eight dogs were singled out for honors, and humans were also recognized for their contributions to helping animals. Among those honored at the event was Masaaki Tanaka, Deputy President, Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group, who was given the American Humane Association’s highest honor, the National Humanitarian Medal. “Without his vital help, there would have been much more despair – and much less hope – for thousands of frightened, hungry, and homeless animals,” stated American Humane Association President and CEO Dr. Robin Ganzert. “Because of his intervention, critically needed support of the animals displaced and left behind when that cataclysm occurred, will, with our help, go on for the foreseeable future.”

SAG-AFTRA was also recognized for protecting animals who work in the entertainment industry and underwriting the AHA’s “No Animals Were Harmed®” certification program. “We have a 99.98 percent safety rate for animals on our sets and have protected so many of America’s most beloved non-human stars of the small and silver screen,” said Dr. Ganzert. “But we couldn’t have done it alone. We are so fortunate to have a partner in SAG-AFTRA that values all the actors who add so much joy, drama, and pathos to our culture and to our lives.”

Keith Urban Leaves ‘The Voice’

Is he clearing the way for a role as a judge on American Idol? Only time will tell, but it is clear Keith Urban is leaving Australia’s The Voice.

Country singer Urban announced he will not be returning as a mentor next season, saying in a statement to Australia’s Nine Network: “I’ve been so fortunate to have been a part of The Voice. And as much as I’d love to do it again, it’s clear that the recording and promoting of a new album, a tour, and other commitments will keep me from being a part of the second season.”

“Other commitments?” Is that a hint he’ll be signing on to Fox’s American Idol?

Announcing his departure, Urban thanked everyone who sang on the show and thanked his The Voice family – Darren [Percival], Delta [Goodrem], Joel [Madden] and Seal – for making his time on the singing competition series “fun.”

Fox is going to have to tie down the judges for the upcoming season of American Idol soon. Only Mariah Carey and Randy Jackson (who was relegated to a mentor role at one point but is now back on the judges panel) are officially signed on. Nicki Minaj is reportedly still in contract negotiations, and rumors are swirling Urban will take a fourth chair.

Not so fast… Of course we don’t want to spoil the surprise for any America’s Got Talent fan who hasn’t seen the seventh season finale yet. Now’s your chance to escape from reading this article, if you don’t want to know who actually emerged the winner in a tough race to the finish.

And now, on to the news of the winner:

First-time judge Howard Stern joined Howie Mandel and Sharon Osbourne (who made her final appearance as a judge with the September 13, 2012 episode) in enjoying/enduring performances by wannabe singers, actors, squirrels, circus acts, and others in search of the AGT 7th season winner. And after the dust had settled it all came down to a battle between sand story artist Joe Castillo from Richmond, KY, comedian Tom Cotter from New York, Earth Harp inventor William Close from Los Angeles, artist David Garibaldi and his CMYK’s from Sacramento, dancing group The Untouchables from Miami, and the traveling dog act Olate Dogs. And following performances by OneRepublic, Justin Bieber, Green Day, and Flo Rida, the winner was crowned: the Olate Dogs took home the $1 million grand prize and will be headlining a show at the The Palazzo Las Vegas Resort and Hotel.

In case you haven’t been following this season, here’s the scoop on the Olate Dogs:

“Olate Dogs is a high-energy, fast-paced dog act filled with impressive pet tricks led by Richard Olate, 55, and his son Nicholas Olate, 19. Richard grew up in South America in a poor family. A third generation circus performer, Richard has performed since he was 12, and through hard work and constant struggle, he made it to the United States at the age of 33. His dream is to have his own dog variety show, and he currently has four completely different dog acts.”

After being crowned the winner, the Olates said, “This has been the end and beginning to our journey. America’s Got Talent has been the most exceptional experience that either of us has ever been on; this is a dream come true after many years of hard work.”

The Olate Dogs, Tom Cotter, Earth Harpist William Close, Joe Castillo and his Sand Art, Lightwire Theatre, and illusionist Spencer Horseman are confirmed to perform at The Palazzo during the Las Vegas show’s eight week run which kicks off on September 26, 2012.
