Finding Nemo is returning to theaters in 3D – of course – this September 14th, and Disney/Pixar’s just revealed the new movie poster supporting its upcoming release.
The Plot:
Finding Nemo follows the comedic and momentous journey of an overly protective clownfish named Marlin (voice by Albert Brooks) and his son Nemo (voice by Alexander Gould)––who become separated in the Great Barrier Reef when Nemo is unexpectedly taken far from his ocean home and dumped into a fish tank in a dentist’s office. Buoyed by the companionship of Dory (voice by Ellen DeGeneres), a friendly-but-forgetful Pacific regal blue tang, Marlin embarks on a dangerous trek and finds himself the unlikely hero of an epic effort to rescue his son––who hatches a few daring plans of his own to return safely home.
If science fiction films have taught audiences anything, it’s that finding signs of an ancient alien civilization and mistaking evidence of their existence for a welcome message is a bad, bad idea. So when scientists on an archeological dig to determine the origins of humankind think they’ve found a key to the puzzle, it’s off to space we go in director Ridley Scott’s Prometheus. As you can imagine, some of them will find that decision to be, in hindsight, dumb.
The film is a prequel to the Alien franchise, but Scott made the correct decision in essentially creating a standalone piece. Canonical elements of the other films are respected, and it gives fans new information but unlike the poorly received prequel of The Thing last year, this isn’t meant to catch us up to the first movie. This could be the beginning of a whole new franchise, and if they’re anything like Prometheus, I’ll be as giddy as a kid on Christmas morning.
Spoiling plot elements seems rude, so it’s hard to say much more than what I already mentioned about the scientists other than that they’re funded by a wealthy corporation/benefactor, jet off to a distant planet, and run into more than they bargained for. I would even recommend avoiding the trailer as it shows a few major events that I was happy not to know about because I waited to watch it until after the movie was screened in its entirety.
The cast is well chosen, sporting the likes of Noomi Rapace, Michael Fassbender, Charlize Theron, and Idris Elba. They and the other actors all created a perfect combustible mix and root the fantastical events in characters we can relate to or at least understand. Rapace is especially impressive, bearing the same power and will to survive of the franchise’s pre-established heroine, Ripley (Sigourney Weaver).
With this new character, Scott has now created two of the best examples of strong female roles in cinema; women who haven’t lost their femininity but who aren’t afraid/unable to take charge and show off both brains and brawn.
The effects and production design are absolutely terrific. This is even more impressive because although it’s inevitable that a movie released in 2012 is going to look shinier than one from 1979, the technology didn’t feel like some ridiculous leap forward (I’m looking at you, Star Wars prequels). And set just 80 years from now, aside from the ability to travel great distances in a state of stasis and the complexity of android technology, most machines and methodologies employed feel like perfectly reasonable extensions of life as we know it today and fit into the world of the other films which chronologically take place afterward.
One key element that has to be mentioned is the 3D. I hope you’re sitting down because this marks the very first big-budget extravaganza that uses 3D so effectively that I’m going to say you’re cheating yourself if you don’t shell out the extra bucks for those tinted lenses. The 3D is completely immersive (almost too much so for this scaredy cat) and sucks the audience into the events. This is what Avatar should have been and anyone who thinks they’ve seen a great big-budget 3D film will realize what they were missing before. I really can’t stress enough how much audiences should avoid 2D versions and instead opt for the third dimension. It actually elevates an already very good movie into an experience actually worth the inflated prices people are forced to pay these days.
With all of that said, and not wanting to start spoiling events in the film, what I can say is that fans of the franchise should not miss seeing this (in 3D on the big screen). Prometheus surpassed my expectations and delivers a great story, tense action, amazing effects, and excellent acting. It’s everything you want in a science fiction film, the best summer movie by far, and easily one of the best movies of the year up to this point; somehow bucking recent trends and continuing a film series with dignity, integrity, and excitement.
Hopefully, this kind of artistry and consideration for creating a movie not dumbed down to the lowest common denominator will be rewarded and incentivize studios to keep backing projects that have more than the requisite elements to make marketing the product as easy as possible. Hey, I can dream, right?
GRADE: A-
Prometheus hits theaters on June 8, 2012 and is rated R for sci-fi violence including some intense images, and brief language.
Open Road Films is showing off this new poster for the cop drama, End of Watch, starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Michael Pena. Set for a nationwide release on September 28, 2012, End of Watch was directed by David Ayer (Street Kings, Harsh Times) and also features Anna Kendrick, Natalie Martinez, Frank Grillo, America Ferrera, and David Harbour.
The Plot:
End of Watch stars Academy Award® nominee Jake Gyllenhaal and Michael Peña as young Los Angeles police officers Taylor and Zavala as they patrol the city’s meanest streets of south central Los Angeles. The film creates a riveting portrait of the city’s most dangerous corners, the cops who risk their lives there every day, and the price they and their families are forced to pay.
Phillip Phillips managed to win season 11 of American Idol while battling kidney stones that had him resting and in pain in between performances. Now with the show over and the American Idol tour looming on the horizon, Phillips underwent a six hour surgery to remove the massive stones he was unable to pass.
TMZ reported he had the surgery on Wednesday, June 6th and that he’s expected to fully recover in time for the tour, which kicks off on July 6th. The Hollywood Reporter says Phillips had eight surgeries during the American Idol season to treat the buildup of kidney stones.
“This train is for circus animals,” says Vitaly (Bryan Cranston) the performing tiger to Alex the lion (Ben Stiller), Marty the zebra (Chris Rock), Melman the giraffe (David Schwimmer), and Gloria the hippo (Jada Pinkett Smith) who are on the run in Europe and still trying to get back home to their beloved New York Zoo in the animated adventure Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted.
Having traveled to Monte Carlo in search of the penguins to get them to fly them all home, Alex and his gang accidentally attract attention to themselves when they crash into a casino while trying to catch up to the penguins. Causing a panic, Alex and his friends are joined by the penguins and King Julian (Sacha Baron Cohen) in trying to evade the authorities, in particular Captain Chantel Dubois (Frances McDormand) – a determined Animal Control officer who would like nothing better than to add Alex’s lion head to her wall collection of animal trophies.
After barely escaping Captain Dubois but losing their means of transportation, Melman asks the obvious question: “How do a lion, zebra, giraffe, hippo, four penguins, two monkeys and three lemurs travel through Europe without attracting attention?” The answer: stow away on a traveling circus’ train. However, in order to win over the real performers on the train and avoid being tossed off, Alex and his friends lie and say that they are also circus animals and will help the struggling circus with a brand new act.
Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted is an animated action/comedy that brings the fun and laughs back to the film series. It’s a colorful, bright, fast-paced movie with a strong cast of voice actors who bring these goofy, lovable characters to life in perhaps their most entertaining adventure yet.
There’s more screen time with the penguins joining in the journey to get back home to New York which adds much more humor to the film than that of the boring, uninteresting snorefest that was Madagascar 2. Plus, the film has an exciting, hilarious chase through Monte Carlo, which is greatly enhanced by the visually stunning use of 3D as well as all the breathtaking acts the characters do as circus performers. The use of the 3D will give the audience the amazing feeling of being up there on the flying trapeze and walking the tightrope.
Full of action and humor, Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted is a real treat for the entire family that should definitely be seen up on the big screen.
