New Clips from People Like Us

Chris Pine and Elizabeth Banks star in screenwriter Alex Kurtzman’s directorial debut, People Like Us (formerly known as Welcome to People). DreamWorks is hoping for the sort of success they found with last year’s release of the adult drama, The Help, although People Like Us doesn’t have the benefit of being based on a bestseller.

Set for release on June 29th, People Like Us also stars Michelle Pfeiffer, Olivia Wilde, Michael Hall D’Addario, and Philip Baker Hall.

The Plot:

From DreamWorks Pictures comes People Like Us, a drama/comedy about family, inspired by true events, starring Chris Pine as Sam, a twenty-something, fast-talking salesman, whose latest deal collapses on the day he learns that his father has suddenly died. Against his wishes, Sam is called home, where he must put his father’s estate in order and reconnect with his estranged family. In the course of fulfilling his father’s last wishes, Sam uncovers a startling secret that turns his entire world upside down: He has a 30-year-old sister Frankie whom he never knew about (Elizabeth Banks). As their relationship develops, Sam is forced to rethink everything he thought he knew about his family—and re-examine his own life choices in the process.

Shane Acker to Direct Deep

9 director Shane Acker is set to helm the animated undersea adventure Deep for Ireland’s Brown Bag Films. The film will be set in a post-apocalyptic Earth with Acker, Ireland’s Brown Bag Films, producer Gregory R. Little and author J. Barton Mitchell all on board as producers. According to Darragh O’Connell, co-founder of Brown Bag Films, Deep will be shot using “new technologies that result in high-quality production value at a fraction of the time and cost.”

Brown Bag Films reports these new technologies stem from their collaboration with video game developers Valve. “The tools enable flexible cinematography and editing, a simplified character animation process and economical lighting, sound and visual effects. Render time is cut to nearly nil, enabling rapid revisions to animation, which brings dramatic savings in time and money over traditional production,” according to the company’s press release.

“Since the success of 9, I’ve been approached with several science fiction-fantasy projects but so many lack substance beneath the slick special effects,” said Acker. “Deep offers real sci-fi credentials but the story is rooted in the complex motivations of the characters making tough choices between right and wrong. I’m excited to be part of a team that is redefining what storytelling in general, and animation in particular, can be.”

“The collaboration with Valve has been a wonderful experience for all of us,” said Little. “The opportunity to produce it in this groundbreaking way gives us great creative freedom and allows us to leverage new distribution channels and platforms.”

The Plot:

With the feel of an underwater Western, Deep is set in a not-too-distant future when what’s left of humanity has moved undersea to stay alive. The story revolves around the crew of the nuclear submarine Norwood as they race to uncover the secrets behind the Wayfarers, a mysterious splinter group with the potential to wipe out humanity altogether.

‘Moonrise Kingdom’ Movie Review

Bill Murray, Tilda Swinton, Bruce Willis, and Edward Norton in Moonrise Kingdom

In an attempt to help readers know where I’m coming from, let’s just say that I’m not one who worships at the altar of Wes Anderson. Rushmore is fine and I liked The Life Aquatic. The list ends there. I believe he’s a talented writer/director but the deadpan, dry-wit delivery style asked of the actors just doesn’t suit my own tastes.

As such, the overall result for me of watching his latest film, Moonrise Kingdom, was an unmitigated “meh”. The story takes place in the mid-1960s on a small New England island and centers around two love-struck 12-year-olds who conspire to run away together – both wanting to leave their respective home situations. Following their escape, the adults and a troop of scouts attempt to retrieve the pair. There’s a sweetness to the love story between the kids, and the movie is at its best when they are playing house with one another, utilizing the innocence of youth effectively.

The problem here is the adults. There is little to no development for any of them, and their involvement seems more like Anderson forcing his hand, making sure to include regulars of his films like Bill Murray and Jason Schwartzman while also bringing in Tilda Swinton, Ed Norton, and Frances McDormand. They stumble and bicker and often deliver lines with the smallest amount of facial expression, as is the norm for Anderson’s work.

The production design is fun, as instead of evoking past periods in Americana and calling it modern day, setting this squarely in the ‘60s allows those touches to feel less like hipsterism. The costuming goes hand in hand with this and completes the quality aesthetic. Alexandre Desplat returns after working with Anderson on Fantastic Mr. Fox and delivers the kind of music one would expect in a project like this; lacking grand, sweeping compositions and instead going for all-out quirkiness which is apropos given the filmmaker.

Regarding compliments not needing so many qualifying remarks, the kids are all great, though they too are asked to paint expressionless masks on their faces. Scenes devoid of adult interaction are engaging and charming. It’s as if Anderson was split on what the focus of the story was and only casually attempted to flesh out the adults’ side of events. The telltale daddy issues apparent in each of his movies are here but aren’t as prominent as usual.

I would imagine hardcore fans of the director will be going to Moonrise Kingdomno matter what, though I’d say to temper expectations for comedy and expect more of a coming-of-age tale. Should you be only a casual fan or on the fence, this is easily a movie that can wait for the home market, or maybe not at all depending on your level of enjoyment of Anderson’s previous work.

GRADE: C

Moonrise Kingdom is rated PG-13 for sexual content and smoking.

Behind the Scenes of Brave

Brave Film Photo
Merida Photo from Brave - © Disney/Pixar
Pixar’s Brave is the studio’s first period piece and the studio’s first true fairy tale. It also marks the first of their films with a female main character, Merida (voiced by Kelly Macdonald). Brave makes good use of its Scottish setting, with director Mark Andrews and his team extensively researching Scotland to make sure they realistically capture the land and the people. And in this behind the scenes featurette, Andrews and the voice cast – including Macdonald, Emma Thompson, Craig Ferguson, and Billy Connolly – discuss the setting, the characters, and what audiences can expect from Brave.

Watch the video:

The Plot:

Since ancient times, stories of epic battles and mystical legends have been passed through the generations across the rugged and mysterious Highlands of Scotland. In “Brave,” a new tale joins the lore when the courageous Merida (voice of Kelly Macdonald) confronts tradition, destiny and the fiercest of beasts.

Merida is a skilled archer and impetuous daughter of King Fergus (voice of Billy Connolly) and Queen Elinor (voice of Emma Thompson). Determined to carve her own path in life, Merida defies an age-old custom sacred to the uproarious lords of the land: massive Lord MacGuffin (voice of Kevin McKidd), surly Lord Macintosh (voice of Craig Ferguson) and cantankerous Lord Dingwall (voice of Robbie Coltrane). Merida’s actions inadvertently unleash chaos and fury in the kingdom, and when she turns to an eccentric old Wise Woman (voice of Julie Walters) for help, she is granted an ill-fated wish. The ensuing peril forces Merida to discover the meaning of true bravery in order to undo a beastly curse before it’s too late.

Brave hits theaters on June 22, 2012.

For Mike (Astin) and Rodney (Vartan), life is good at the Treadline Tire Company. But when Farrell’s unexpected “departure” puts Castro in charge, the guys find themselves demoted and demoralized.

Now the target of harassment from the higher ups, Mike and Rodney – with the help of their fellow secretaries – will not only come to appreciate how everyone contributes to the success of a small business, but just might find a way to knock ol’ Kenny down a peg or two in the process, proving revenge is best served cold….just like office coffee.
