Film Review: ’21 Jump Street’

Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill in '21 Jump Street'

It’s no secret that the thought of Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum leading the way on a film adaptation of 21 Jump Street made me ill. For years there have been a never-ending parade of 80’s TV and film projects being re-booted/re-imagined/re-hashed, nearly all of which have felt like spiritual kicks to the groin. Jump Street (that what’s the cool kids call it) is only the latest in a long string of lazy ideas, where a nostalgic property has its script shuffled together, run through a computer algorithm, and typed by blind monkeys in order to produce something investors can make money on.

Now, if you’re under 25 or over 40, I doubt any of my ranting matters. More than likely, you never knew the show existed/didn’t watch it/quickly determined it wasn’t for you. For all of those people, chances are … and this really, REALLY hurts to admit … chances are you’re going to like what Hill, Tatum and their cohorts came up with.

First of all, it’s directed by Phil Lord and Chris Miller, the writers behind Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs and written by Michael Bacall, the writer behind Scott Pilgrim vs. the World. They know funny. The film quickly disperses with back story and gets us right into the undercover portion of the plot, which allows for a number of great young actors like Dave Franco and Brie Larsen to join up with more established comedians like Rob Riggle and Chris Parnell. Even Ice Cube, playing the captain of Jump Street, captured the ideals being brought to the table. To its credit, the film knows they’re playing with stereotypes and borrowed source material; there is a full acknowledgment of this notion and it eases the sting for fans somewhat.

So if you saw the trailers and are all giddy with excitement, by all means go and see this film. HOWEVER … if you’re like me and catch yourself singing the TV theme song now and again. Or if you’re like me and you own any/all of the series on DVD (or VHS if you’re even more awesome). Or if you’re like me and even find glee in the Richard Grieco era of the show. Well … you might want to think seventeen or eighteen times about whether you need to see this movie.

I say all this not because the movie isn’t funny. It is. I laughed out loud multiple times. (Wow it hurts to say that.) And there’s a distinct possibility I’d have let most of the changes made to the format go … except there’s one very, very, very, VERY unforgivable scene. And It hurts even more that I can’t say what it is because it would be a major spoiler. But if you trust me at all with these things (and you should), true 21 Jump Street fans should just stay at home and re-watch a few episodes. Let everyone else watch the movie and not realize the injustice perpetrated on film; made worse because of the people who agreed to let it happen.

So while this isn’t truly destroying the legacy of the source material, like The Green Hornet … it’s more … urinating on the 21 Jump Street legacy. A light spray, free of asparagus, but it’s still a golden shower.

I will separate my seething anger long enough to give the movie a passing, however. Putting aside the metaphorical middle finger to the show, anyone not holding on as tight as myself will probably like this quite a bit. As with most comedies these days, the trailer gives you the best indication of the type of comedy you’re in for, and if it appealed to you, then you know what to do. Meanwhile, I’m going to curl up into the fetal position for a bit … it’ll make me feel better about what I saw and what I just had to write.

GRADE: C

21 Jump Street hits theaters on March 16, 2012 and is rated R for crude and sexual content, pervasive language, drug material, teen drinking and some violence.

John Carter Video: Meet Woola

Woola was my favorite part of the sci-fi action epic, John Carter, and apparently I’m not the only one who likes the Martian dog. Disney’s just released a video featuring Woola who is actually a Calot – a large lizard-like dog creature. Thanks for clearing that up. The studio’s also supplied a handy poster with all the pertinent facts about Woola.

Julie Benz and Tony Curran Join the Cast of Defiance

Julie Benz (Dexter), Tony Curran, Stephanie Leondias and Jaime Murray have signed on to Defiance, a new sci-fi drama on Syfy. The series, according to the network, is the first to unite television and MMO gaming.

Filming will begin on Defiance in April with Scott Stewart (Priest) set to direct the pilot episode. Defiance is written and executive produced by Rockne O’Bannon (Farscape), Kevin Murphy (also the showrunner) and Michael Taylor (Battlestar Galactica).

The Plot:

Set in the near future, Defiance introduces a completely transformed planet Earth, inhabited by the survivors of a universal war. Forced to co-habitate, the disparate group struggles to build a new society among the devastation. The dramatic tapestry of the series and the intense action of the game will exist in a single universe where their respective narratives will inform one another and evolve together into one overall story.

Benz portrays Amanda Rosewater, the idealistic mayor of a bustling mining boomtown, one of the world’s few oases of civility and inclusion. As the newly appointed mayor, she is determined to maintain peace in the community, an ambitious task in this deadly new world.

Leonidas plays Irisa, an exotically beautiful warrior who is part of an alien race called the Irathients. After Nolan (Grant Bowler) killed her criminal father, he adopted the girl and raised her as his clever – and lethal – right-hand.

Curran will portray Datak Tarr, part of an elite alien race known as the Castithans. Datak grew up in the slums of his home planet, but despite being part of the under-privileged class, he schemed his way onto one of the alien arks, saving himself before his home planet was destroyed.

Murray portrays Datak’s beautiful and proper wife, Stahma, a high-ranking Castithan before her home planet ceased to exist. Clever, imaginative and darkly opportunistic, Stahma is perhaps more dangerous than her husband.

Sebastian Stan (Gossip Girl, Captain America) has joined Sigourney Weaver, Carla Gugino, James Wolk, and Brittany Ishibashi in the cast of Political Animals, a six hour original series on USA Network. Greg Berlanti (Brothers & Sisters) wrote, will direct the pilot, and serves as an executive producer on the dramatic series.

Political Animals will air this summer.

The Plot:

Pulling back the curtain on persuasive public speeches and stirring campaign ads, the fictional look at a former first family exposes a dynasty weakened by political ambition, lust and greed. In the wake of a recent divorce from her philandering ex-husband — who is still as much in love with her as with the office he once held — and the loss of the presidential nomination, Barrish attempts to keep her family together while simultaneously dealing with crises of the State Department and the hungry DC journalist (Gugino) bent on destroying her career. Ishibashi stars as Douglas’ fiancée, Anne Ogami.

Stan will star as Thomas “T.J.” Hammond, the son of former First Lady/newly appointed Secretary of State Elaine Barrish (Weaver) and her ex-husband, the former President Bud Hammond. A lost soul who struggles with addiction, T.J. is the polar opposite of his brother, Douglas (Wolk), who serves as their mother’s chief of staff.

Lisa Marie Presley Unleashes Storm and Grace in May

Lisa Marie Presley’s set to release her first album in five year on May 15, 2012 when Storm and Grace, produced by T Bone Burnett, hits stores. Commenting on her new record, Presley stated, “Just over two years ago, I went to England to attempt to write another record after finding myself in a considerably disheartened and uninspired state creatively. Over an eight-month period, I wrote 30 songs. I was fortunate to be able to write with some incredible artists and singers such as Richard Hawley (from Pulp), Ed Harcourt, Sacha Skarbek and Fran Healy (from Travis), to name a few. Nothing was planned or contrived in any way and out of it came a very organic record that was always inside of me and that I am incredibly proud of. It was a dream come true and such an honor when T Bone liked the songs and produced and played on the record.”

Producer Burnett added, “When songs from Lisa Marie Presley showed up at my door, I was curious. I wondered what the daughter of an American revolutionary music artist had to say. What I heard was honest, raw, unaffected and soulful. I thought her father would be proud of her. The more I listened to the songs, the deeper an artist I found her to be. Listening beyond the media static, Lisa Marie Presley is a Southern American folk music artist of great value.”

Storm and Grace Track List:

1. Over Me
2. You Ain’t Seen Nothin’ Yet
3. Weary
4. Close To The Edge
5. So Long
6. Un-Break
7. Soften The Blows
8. Storm Of Nails
9. How Do You Fly This Plane?
10. Sticks And Stones
11. Storm and Grace

The Killing Season 2 Poster

The Killing season two debuts on April 1, 2012 at 8pm ET/PT with a special two-hour premiere and, hopefully, season two’s first episode won’t leave us as disappointed as we were with the season one finale.

The season 2 basics: “What if Rosie was part of something… bigger?” The mystery deepens.”

HBO Ends Production on Luck

Following the deaths of three horses during the filming of the dramatic series Luck, HBO has ended production of the show. Two of the deaths occurred as a result of the horses breaking their legs during or just after running a race for the series. The third death happened this week when the horse reared up, flipped over backwards, and then hit her head on the ground as she was being walked back to her stall.

HBO issued the following statement announcing the end of the series:

“It is with heartbreak that executive producers David Milch and Michael Mann together with HBO have decided to cease all future production on the series LUCK.

Safety is always of paramount concern. We maintained the highest safety standards throughout production, higher in fact than any protocols existing in horseracing anywhere with many fewer incidents than occur in racing or than befall horses normally in barns at night or pastures. While we maintained the highest safety standards possible, accidents unfortunately happen and it is impossible to guarantee they won’t in the future. Accordingly, we have reached this difficult decision.

We are immensely proud of this series, the writing, the acting, the filmmaking, the celebration of the culture of horses, and everyone involved in its creation.”

Michael Mann and David Milch stated:

“The two of us loved this series, loved the cast, crew and writers. This has been a tremendous collaboration and one that we plan to continue in the future.”

‘Girls’ Premiere Details and April Episode Guide

The cast of Girls

HBO’s debuting a new comedy series on April 15th called Girls, created by and starring Lena Dunham (Tiny Furniture). Judd Apatow (The 40-Year-Old Virgin) executive produces the series with Dunham and Jenni Konner; Bruce Eric Kaplan and Ilene S. Landress co-executive produce. The first season is made up of 10 half-hour episodes which will air on Sunday nights from 10:30-11:00 p.m. ET/PT.

In addition to Dunham (who also directed five of the 10 episodes), the cast includes Jemima Kirke, Allison Williams, Zosia Mamet, and Adam Driver. Guest stars include Becky Ann Baker, Peter Scolari, Mike Birbiglia, Kathryn Hahn, Michael Imperioli, James LeGros, Richard Masur, Bobby Moynihan, Chris O’Dowd, Lou Taylor Pucci, Andrew Rannells, Jenny Slate, and Jorma Taccone.

The Plot: Hannah, Marnie, Jessa, and Shoshanna are trying to figure life out. They’ve been living in New York for a couple of years, but they’re still not sure what they want – from boys, from each other, from themselves. And things aren’t getting any clearer.

Hannah (Lena Dunham) is a unique mixture of self-entitlement and self-loathing. She believes she has the talent to be a successful writer but forgets she has to write first. She wants to have a boyfriend without the obligations of a relationship and a job without having to work. She’s ultimately good-natured, with a spirited sense of humor. But every time Hannah is about to improve her circumstances, her cluelessness undercuts her.

Marnie (Allison Williams), Hannah’s roommate and best friend, is a Type A personality with strict rules about friendship. She seems like Hannah’s opposite because she’s got an actual job and a serious boyfriend. But while she’s more together on the surface, her unwillingness to admit how lost she is may mean that she’s the most lost.

Jessa (Jemima Kirke) is a live-and-let-live bohemian who’s allergic to anything she views as bourgeois. She wants a life less ordinary and has traveled extensively. She’s had lots of different jobs and lots of different boyfriends, but her apparent lack of fear belies her own kind of insecurity. Jessa is apt to put crazy ideas in Hannah’s head that are easier for a gorgeous British girl to pull off than they are for anxious, rumpled Hannah.

Shoshanna (Zosia Mamet), Jessa’s roommate and cousin, aspires to the Sex and the City lifestyle. She’s an NYU student obsessed with “women’s issues,” gluten-free foods and sexcentric self-help. The others tend to underestimate her because she’s suburban and innocent, but Shoshanna can be a surprisingly incisive source of wisdom.

Johnny Depp, Meryl Streep Join Bully Campaign

The list of celebrities backing the campaign to reduce the R rating on the anti-bullying documentary Bully to a PG-13 continues to expand on a daily basis. The latest big names to lend their support include Meryl Streep, Johnny Depp, and Justin Bieber, all of whom have spoken out in support of Michigan high school student Katy Butler’s petition campaign on Change.org.

Butler’s petition urges the MPAA to reconsider its decision so that Bully can be screened in middle schools and high schools, ensuring that the film’s anti-bullying message will reach its target audience. Butler’s online petition has more than 299,000 supporters, including New Orleans Saints Quarterback Drew Brees, Ellen DeGeneres, Demi Lovato, Kelly Ripa, Tommy Hilfiger, and 26 Members of Congress. Even Gerry Lopez, CEO of AMC Theaters, issued a statement in support of reducing the rating to one less restrictive.

“We’ve got the MPAA’s attention, and with nearly 300,000 signatures and support from celebrities and politicians, there’s now a national movement of people calling on the MPAA to drop the ‘R’ rating for Bully,” Butler said. “As someone who lived through bullying day in and day out in school, including having my finger broken by bullies, this film is too important to silence with an ‘R’ rating. Everyone should have a chance to see Bully.”
