James Cameron is Diving to the Deepest Point of the Ocean

Isn’t James Cameron supposed to be heading back to Pandora?

James Cameron is heading down to the Mariana Trench, the world’s deepest point (nearly 7 miles beneath the surface of the ocean), sometime in the coming weeks. He’ll be making the deep-sea dive in his specially designed submersible as part of the DEEPSEA CHALLENGE, a scientific project Cameron’s involved in with the National Geographic Society and Rolex. Cameron’s journey will be the first scientific exploration into the Mariana Trench by a manned vehicle.

The goal of the project is “to conduct deep-ocean research and exploration to expand our knowledge and understanding of these largely unknown parts of the planet.”

Announcing the dive, Cameron stated, “The deep trenches are the last unexplored frontier on our planet, with scientific riches enough to fill a hundred years of exploration. National Geographic, which has been exploring the world for nearly 125 years, is the ideal partner to help usher in a new era of deep-ocean research and exploration that supports leading scientific institutions in answering questions about the deepest, unexplored parts of the Earth. Our goal is to build a scientific legacy for generations to come. It’s also to inspire people across the globe to celebrate exploration and to explore with us online and through the media we produce.”

“Some believe the golden age of exploration is behind us. On the contrary, I believe we are at the beginning of our greatest age of exploration,” said Terry Garcia, National Geographic’s executive vice president for Mission Programs. “We salute James Cameron for his commitment to science and exploration, and we are delighted to be part of this groundbreaking adventure to the deepest and least explored point on Earth.”

If all goes as planned, Cameron (a National Geographic Explorer-in-Residence) will be spending six hours on the bottom of the Pacific Ocean trench, collecting samples for research in marine biology, microbiology, astrobiology, marine geology, and geophysics.

Armie Hammer Talks About ‘The Lone Ranger’

Armie Hammer talks to Access Hollywood about working on The Lone Ranger with the whole Pirates of the Caribbean club: Johnny Depp, director Gore Verbinski, and producer Jerry Bruckheimer. “Fortunately, the club has very lenient acceptance rules apparently,” joked Hammer when asked about being the new “president” of this established group.

Talking about being a part of this huge budget production, Hammer goes on to say, “I was nervous up until lunch on the first day when I realized…I was in line getting food and I realized, ‘This feels like a bunch of dudes in a room with a camera making a movie.’ This is what I love about this. Everybody’s doing one thing, so it doesn’t feel cumbersome in any way.”

Hammer also talks about his butt, Johnny Depp’s accent as Tonto, Gore Verbinski as a director, and this version of the Lone Ranger character. “It’s less of that two-dimensional same kind of like Prince Charming thing and more of like the human underneath all of that,” says Hammer.

And a bit of big news is revealed: Hammer’s Lone Ranger doesn’t really say, “Hi ho, Silver!”

The Plot:

The Lone Ranger is a thrilling adventure infused with action and humor, in which the famed masked hero is brought to life through new eyes. Native American spirit warrior Tonto (Johnny Depp) recounts the untold tales that transformed John Reid (Armie Hammer), a man of the law, into a legend of justice–taking the audience on a runaway train of epic surprises and humorous friction as the two unlikely heroes must learn to work together and fight against greed and corruption.”

‘We Need to Talk About Kevin’ Movie Review

Tilda Swinton and John C Reilly in We Need to Talk About Kevin

It’s impossible to know what it must feel like to be the parent of a child who goes on to commit a terrible act and obviously a situation no one should have to endure. However, in director Lynne Ramsay’s We Need to Talk About Kevin, that’s the idea.

Based on the book by Lionel Shriver, the cinematic adaptation sees Tilda Swinton steps into the shoes of Eva, a mother dealing with the grief and shame of her son Kevin’s actions. Ramsay, who co-wrote the screenplay with Rory Kinnear, switches up the manner in how the story is told. Rather than a series of letters written from the mother to her husband (John C. Reilly), the film moves backward and forwards in time – eventually relating exactly what it is that Kevin did (played in three stages by Rock Duer, Jasper Newell, and Ezra Miller).

There’s nothing wrong in the approach but unfortunately, after the first hour or so, it’s clear what kind of mental and emotional stress Swinton’s character is under. While some of the specific details are still waiting to be uncovered, there’s a monotony to some of the scenes as we’re just shown again and again that Eva sees that Kevin is troubled and her husband is completely clueless. Editing down some of the middle sections would have helped here immensely.

One thing that won’t be receiving anything but praise is the acting. Swinton is always a treat to watch on-screen, as she’s one of the most daring actresses in film today. Here again, she figures out how to strip away the layers of her character and expose the raw nerve. All three of the actors portraying Kevin do an excellent job, but it’s the oldest of the trio, Ezra Miller, who gets to act out all the juicy parts and so too go the spoils. However, it’s what he does with the scenes he’s given that single out his performance, and if I were his parent, I’d be a bit warier of the next holiday get-together.

Back to Ramsay’s influence on the proceedings, her most obvious artistic touch is the use of red, as the color permeates throughout the entire film. It both foreshadows Kevin’s acts and serves as a shameful reminder to Eva. The editing, disregarding the inability to trim excess scenes, works quite well with the sound design to make the jumps in time seamless and almost dreamlike. Film students will have a ball with the technical aspects going on here, that’s for sure.

But while the acting is impressive and there are some chilling moments, there’s an air of pretension that never goes away in Ramsey’s effort. We Need to Talk About Kevin feels about 30 minutes too long, as it would have worked better to move forward with a bit more forcefulness and let the story speak for itself rather than succumb so often to the director’s aesthetic touches. It’s worth seeing for the performances of Swinton and Miller, but you’re better off waiting for it to hit the home market than tracking it down in your local arthouse theater.

GRADE: B-

We Need to Talk About Kevin is rated R for disturbing violence and behavior, some sexuality and language.

Film Review: ‘John Carter’

Taylor Kitsch and Lynn Collins in 'John Carter'

Unlike John Carter, I’m not going to take up a lot of your time. Really, you can break down the movie very simply and gauge a person’s ability to enjoy it based on a few short questions: Are you under the age of 15? Do you like your 2012 CGI to look like 2003 CGI? Is passable 3D more important than a fully developed script? And most importantly, did you like the Star Wars prequels?

If you answered ‘yes’ to those questions … well … sigh (not that you could do anything about your age, your parents just couldn’t wait any longer). If your responses were unmitigated cries of ‘NO!’ and/or a series of groans, then you probably don’t need to see what’s being marketed as the “first blockbuster of the year,” though it would be more appropriately titled “the first huge waste of investment capital of the year.”

Author Edgar Rice Burroughs has been cited by many of today’s sci-fi filmmakers as an inspiration, and it’s readily apparent that this character and his adventures probably made great books. However, trying to translate it to film created a series of missteps surrounding character backstory and plot detail. As events unfold, it’s painfully obvious that there are elements probably explained in the source material that make the actions whizzing by on-screen seem less trivial and random.

The actors all do a generally decent job with what they have to work with, but the overall result is just a rather bland 132 minutes. Director Andrew Stanton was at the helm for some of Pixar’s best efforts, WALL·E and Finding Nemo. Those movies knew that story needed to come first. John Carter feels more like a rushed attempt to crank out a beloved story in order to make the release date, and could have greatly benefited from a re-write or even splitting it into a series of films; as the story being told is rich but painfully compressed even within a long runtime.

More detail and description of the general failure of the movie could be given, but I promised not to drag on. John Carter will do fine with adolescent boys, and whoever the hell liked George Lucas dragging his Star Wars legacy through the wringer. However, for the rest of us, this is time better spent cleaning roof gutters, building a toothpick bridge, or taking a nice nap. Nothing in the film was all that offensive but very, very little did more than pass the time … way, way too much time.

GRADE: C-

John Carter hits theaters on March 9, 2012 and is rated PG-13 for intense sequences of violence and action.

Metallica in 3D – yes, it’s coming soon to a theater near you.

The group just announced they’ve brought in Predators director Nimród Antal to direct their 3D feature film. According to Metallica, the film will star all five members of the group (and their fans) and will be a “marriage of narrative and concert.” Filming’s expected to begin in August with an eye on a summer 2013 release.

“I’ve been a fan of Nimród’s since his first Hungarian film, Kontroll, showed up at Cannes in 2004 and blew everybody away,” stated Metallica’s Lars Ulrich. “I’ve watched with excitement his career in Hollywood blossom over the last few years. Within five minutes of meeting him I was addicted to his enthusiasm, his take on the creative process and his ‘thinking outside of the box’ personality. Let’s get on with it!!!”

“Metallica has always been a huge part of my life, and it’s an incredible opportunity when we get to work with our heroes,” said Antal. “We are going to harness the powerful and almighty energy of Metallica’s live shows, inject a narrative into it, and shoot it in 3D to elevate the entire experience.”

In addition to Kontroll and Predators, Antal’s directing credits include Vacancy with Kate Beckinsale and Luke Wilson and Armored starring Matt Dillon and Laurence Fishburne.

In October 2008, their latest album, Death Magnetic, debuted at number one on the Billboard Top 200 Album Chart and in 27 additional countries around the world. It was certified platinum in the United States just six weeks later.

Metallica has also garnered numerous awards and accolades, including nine Grammy Awards, two American Music Awards, and multiple MTV Video Music Awards.
