Uma Thurman to Guest Star on ‘Smash’

NBC’s musical drama Smash is set to have an Oscar nominated guest star. Uma Thurman (Pulp Fiction) has a five-episode arc on the new show which debuts on February 6, 2011. According to NBC, Thurman will play a “famous and somewhat difficult movie star who flirts with the idea of starring in Marilyn, the musical within the musical.”

Uma Thurman’s other credits include Kill Bill Volume I and 2, Dangerous Liaisons, Henry & June, Even Cowgirls Get the Blues, Mad Dog and Glory, Beautiful Girls, The Truth About Cats & Dogs, Gattaca, Batman & Robin, Paycheck, and Be Cool.

Smash – The Plot:

Smash is a musical drama that celebrates the beauty and heartbreak of the Broadway theater as it follows a cross-section of dreamers and schemers who all have one common desire – to be a “smash.” The series centers on the process of creating a Broadway musical based on the life of Marilyn Monroe – written by the successful songwriting duo of Tom (Tony Award nominee Christian Borle, Legally Blonde: The Musical) and Julia (Emmy Award winner Debra Messing, Will & Grace). Julia recently began the process of adopting a child with her husband Frank (Tony Award nominee Brian d’Arcy James, Shrek The Musical).

A rivalry soon forms for the lead role between a youthful, inexperienced Midwestern beauty Karen (Katharine McPhee, American Idol) – who is trying to find fame in the big city against all odds – and stage veteran Ivy Bell (Megan Hilty, 9 to 5: The Musical), who’s determined to leave the chorus line and finally get her big break. A tenacious producer Eileen (Oscar winner, Anjelica Huston, Prizzi’s Honor) discovers the “Marilyn” project and jumps on board with a brilliant director, Derek (Jack Davenport, Pirates of the Caribbean films) – whose talent is matched by his cunning and egocentric amorality.

Jaime Cepero (Porgy and Bess) stars as Ellis, and Raza Jaffrey (Sex and the City 2) stars as Dev.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced the field of possible contenders in the ‘Achievement in Visual Effects’ category now stands at just 15 films. And here are the 2011 movies still in the running:

“Captain America: The First Avenger”
“Cowboys & Aliens”
“Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2”
“Hugo”
“Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol”
“Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides”
“Real Steel”
“Rise of the Planet of the Apes”
“Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows”
“Sucker Punch”
“Super 8”
“Thor”
“Transformers: Dark of the Moon”
“The Tree of Life”
“X-Men: First Class”

The Academy’s Visual Effects Branch Executive Committee will narrow the field to 10 in early January. That field will be narrowed to five following special screenings of 10-minute excerpts from the remaining 10 movies.

The 84th Academy Awards nominees will be revealed on Tuesday, January 24, 2012.

Vampire Graphic Novel Nanny and Hank Heading to the Big Screen

Nanny and Hank

Bluewater Productions’ Nanny & Hank graphic novel will become a feature film following a deal with Uptown 6 Productions. The unique vampire tale follows “two grandparents ready to enjoy their golden years with travel and grandchildren, and how a horrible encounter with a disgruntled vampire changes their world forever and ever.” Uptown 6 is aiming for a 2013 release.

Nanny & Hank: Retirement is Hell is the ‘funniest’ take on mortality and morality to ever splash the pages of a comic book,” stated Uptown 6’s president Adam Lipsius, announcing the acquisition. “The protagonists’ plight is rife with truth and humor. These heroes creep me out with how cool they are, and Uptown 6 is committed to bringing every giggle and shiver to the big screen. We couldn’t be more excited to be in business with Bluewater, the new tastemakers in indie comics.”

Bluewater’s president Darren G. Davis says that the story which was written by Mark L. Miller and illustrated by Steve Babb is actually based on his family. “Call it a love letter to my grandparents. The main characters are based on them, and it was a riot trying to insert some of the funny old family stories into a vampiric context,” said Davis, adding, “And yes, their names really were Nanny and Hank!”

About fun. [Courtesy of Fueled by Ramen]:

fun. began in 2008 when Nate Ruess teamed up with Andrew Dost and Jack Antonoff to meld an array of diverse inspirations into their own irresistible and freewheeling pop songcraft. The band drew immediate attention for their contemporary rethinking of classic ’70s pop, where ornate arrangements and inspired orchestrations meet present-day rock ‘n’ roll. Fit to burst with richly prolix lyricism and intricate melodic twists and turns, “AIM AND IGNITE” earned copious critical praise: Paste praised their “bubbly, pop-synth songs,” while The Huffington Post noted that “(fun. has) been quite on a roll since the release of their well-received debut.”

The band followed the album’s release with a series of well-received live appearances, including numerous headline dates and show-stopping performances at such gatherings as 2011’s Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival.

The Lucky One Trailer Arrives

Warner Bros has debuted the first trailer from The Lucky One starring Zac Efron just a few days after they unveiled a behind-the-scenes look at the dramatic film. That video featured the cast and Sparks discussing the film, with clips sprinkled throughout. This trailer gives us a much better look at what to expect from the 2012 release.

Set to hit theaters on April 20, 2012, The Lucky One also stars Blythe Danner, Taylor Schilling, Jay R Ferguson, and Riley Thomas Stewart.

The Lucky One Synopsis [From the Nicholas Sparks Book]:

When U.S. Marine Logan Thibault finds a photograph of a smiling young woman half-buried in the dirt during his third tour of duty in Iraq, his first instinct is to toss it aside. Instead, he brings it back to the base for someone to claim, but when no one does, he finds himself always carrying the photo in his pocket. Soon Thibault experiences a sudden streak of luck—winning poker games and even surviving deadly combat that kills two of his closest buddies. Only his best friend, Victor, seems to have an explanation for his good fortune: the photograph—his lucky charm.

Back home in Colorado, Thibault can’t seem to get the photo—and the woman in it—out of his mind. Believing that she somehow holds the key to his destiny, he sets out on a journey across the country to find her, never expecting the strong but vulnerable woman he encounters in Hampton, North Carolina—Elizabeth, a divorced mother with a young son—to be the girl he’s been waiting his whole life to meet. Caught off guard by the attraction he feels, Thibault keeps the story of the photo, and his luck, a secret. As he and Elizabeth embark upon a passionate and all-consuming love affair, the secret he is keeping will soon threaten to tear them apart—destroying not only their love, but also their lives.

Battleship Trailer #2 Shows Off the Aliens

Aliens? Yes, because the Hasbro board game it’s based on is all about aliens, right? I don’t remember that in my version of Battleship, and I kept watching the second trailer for the Battleship movie just waiting for someone to yell at the aliens: “You sunk my battleship!!!” That moment never comes, however, we do get to see the aliens, see a bit more of the action, and get a look at Rihanna making her feature film acting debut.

The Plot: Peter Berg (Hancock) produces and directs Battleship, an epic-scaled action-adventure that unfolds across the seas, in the skies and over land as our planet fights for survival against a superior force.

Inspired by Hasbro’s classic naval combat game, Battleship stars Taylor Kitsch as Lt. Alex Hopper, a Naval officer assigned to the USS John Paul Jones; Brooklyn Decker as Sam Shane, a physical therapist and Hopper’s fiancée; Alexander Skarsgård as Hopper’s older brother, Stone, Commanding Officer of the USS Sampson; Rihanna as Petty Officer Raikes, Hopper’s crewmate and a weapons specialist on the USS John Paul Jones; and international superstar Liam Neeson as Hopper and Stone’s superior (and Sam’s father), Admiral Shane.

The Divide Opening Sequence Video

Check out the opening sequence from Anchor Bay’s The Divide featuring a nuclear strike.

Watch the clip:

The Plot:

In this graphic and violent, post-apocalyptic thriller, nine strangers-all tenants of a New York high-rise apartment-escape a nuclear attack by hiding out in the building’s bunker-like basement. Trapped for days underground with no hope for rescue, and only unspeakable horrors awaiting them on the other side of the bunker door, thegroup begins to descend into madness, each turning on one another with physical and psycho-sexual torment. As supplies dwindle, and tensions flare, they grow increasingly unhinged by their close quarters and hopelessness. Each act against one another becomes more depraved than the next. While everyone in the bunker allows himself or herself to be overcome by desperation and lose their humanity, one survivor holds onto a thin chance for escape, even with no promise of salvation on the outside.
