Oscar and Emmy winner Martin Scorsese will be writing a monthly column for tcm.com and TCM’s Now Playing viewing guide. Scorsese’s new writing gig, “Scorsese Screens,” will examine the films and programs presented on TCM’s schedule. His first column, which features an analysis of Nicholas Ray’s films, is now available at tcm.com. “[…]of all the great American filmmakers, Ray is the one whose work many of us associate most powerfully with youth,” says Scorsese in his debut column.

The first “Scorsese Screens” also showcases the work of cinematographer John Alton, with Scorsese claiming “anything photographed by Alton is an event. He was an artist.”

Senior vice president of brand and digital activation/general manager of festivals for TCM, TBS and TNT Dennis Adamovich explained why Martin Scorsese was the perfect choice for this special column:. “Martin Scorsese is a master filmmaker with an immense passion for movies, an encyclopedic knowledge of film history and a ceaseless dedication to preserving the world’s cinematic heritage. We are proud of our partnership with The Film Foundation in bringing Scorsese’s unique voice to TCM’s community of fans.”

THE X FACTOR's Chris Rene (Photo Credit: Ray Mickshaw / FOX)

2 million views and counting… Chris Rene stole the show on the series premiere of Fox’s The X-Factor, and his amazing performance of his original song, “Young Homie,” wowed the audiences and the judges. And now the video of Rene singing “Young Homie” has become a hit on Youtube.

Rene, a garbage man who wants to leave that job behind for a career in music, is a former drug addict who’s been clean for 70+ days (as of the date of the show’s taping). The father of a 2 1/2 year old son, Rene has cleaned up his act and says that winning the $5 million prize would mean stability for his family. His song was obviously deeply personal, and Rene even teared up at the end when the judges praised his strong, moving performance.

R.E.M. Announces Release Date, Track List for Their Greatest Hits Album

REM Part Lies, Part Heart, Part Truth, Part GarbageR.E.M. shocked fans by announcing on September 21, 2011 that the group had decided to call it quits after 31 years of recording together. At that time, it was also revealed they’d be releasing a greatest hits album in November, and now we have the details on the upcoming release. The album is titled R.E.M., Part Lies, Part Heart, Part Truth, Part Garbage, 1982 – 2011 and will be available on November 15, 2011.

This final R.E.M. album will feature 40 songs spanning their 3 decade-long career, including songs from back when they were on the IRS label (1982-87). The group’s also releasing a new song, “We All Go Back To Where We Belong,” on October 18th – one of three new songs they finished after their last album that will be included on the upcoming greatest hits compilation.

“Working through our music and memories from over three decades was a hell of a journey,” says Mike Mills of choosing the songs that appear on R.E.M., Part Lies, Part Heart, Part Truth, Part Garbage, 1982 – 2011. “We realized that these songs seemed to draw a natural line under the last 31 years of our working together.”

More on R.E.M. [Courtesy of Warner Bros Records]:

R.E.M. formed in 1980 when singer Michael Stipe met guitarist Peter Buck in an Athens, GA, record store where Buck worked. After recruiting bassist Mike Mills and drummer Bill Berry, R.E.M. released its first single, “Radio Free Europe,” in 1981, followed by 1982’s Chronic Town EP, capturing the imagination of a new generation of music lovers and bringing “guitar pop back into the underground lexicon,” as All-Music put it. Widely credited with inventing the college-rock genre, R.E.M. became the most influential American alternative rock band in history — inspiring such artists as Sonic Youth, Pavement, Nirvana, and Radiohead — for achieving multi-platinum mainstream success while maintaining their distinct identity.

Over the course of its career, the band has released 15 studio albums: Murmur (1983), Reckoning (1984), Fables of the Reconstruction (1985), Lifes Rich Pageant (1986), Document (1987), Green (1988), Out of Time (1991), Automatic For The People (1992), Monster (1994), New Adventures in Hi-Fi (1996), Up (1998), Reveal (2001), Around the Sun (2004), Accelerate (2008), and Collapse Into Now (2011). ‘New Girl’ – Plot Details, Cast List, and Trailer

Max Greenfield, Jake Johnson, Zooey Deschanel and Lamorne Morris star in 'New Girl'

The first season of Fox’s half-hour primetime comedy New Girl kicks off on September 20, 2011. The show stars Zooey Deschanel in the title role and focuses on her complicated love life.

Zooey Deschanel stars as Jess, Max Greenfield is Schmidt, and Jake M Johnson plays Nick. The cast also includes Lamorne Morris as Winston and Hannah Simone as Cece.

The Synopsis: A single-camera ensemble comedy starring Zooey Deschanel as Jess, an offbeat girl who after a bad breakup moves in with three single guys and essentially sets a bomb off in their lives.

First Look: ‘One for the Money’ Trailer

I’m not sure the One for the Money trailer sold me on the movies, but it definitely looks more entertaining than some of Katherine Heigl’s other recent film choices. Heigl stars as an out of work Jersey girl who takes a job working for a bail bond company in the comedy set for release on January 27, 2012. One for the Money is based on Janet Evanovich’s book and also features Jason O’Mara, Sherri Shepherd, and Debbie Reynolds.

Official Synopsis: A proud, born-and-bred Jersey girl, Stephanie Plum’s got plenty of attitude, even if she’s been out of work for the last six months and just lost her car to a debt collector. Desperate for some fast cash, Stephanie turns to her last resort: convincing her sleazy cousin to give her a job at his bail bonding company…as a recovery agent. True, she doesn’t even own a pair of handcuffs and her weapon of choice is pepper spray, but that doesn’t stop Stephanie from taking on Vinny’s biggest bail-jumper: former vice cop and murder suspect Joe Morelli – yup, the same sexy, irresistible Joe Morelli who seduced and dumped her back in high school.

Nabbing Morelli would be satisfying payback – and a hefty payday – but as Stephanie learns the ins and outs of becoming a recovery agent from Ranger, a hunky colleague who’s the best in the business, she also realizes the case against Morelli isn’t airtight. Add to the mix her meddling family, a potentially homicidal boxer, witnesses who keep dying and the problem of all those flying sparks when she finds Morelli himself…well, suddenly Stephanie’s new job isn’t nearly as easy as she thought.

Daniel Craig, Rachel Weisz and Naomi Watts star in Dream House, a PG-13 rated thriller directed by Jim Sheridan (Brothers, In America). Dream House has had a rough time making it to theaters (it was delayed from a February release, reshoots were involved, and now the film won’t be screening for critics before it’s released which is never a good sign), but it’s set to finally make its way into theaters on September 30, 2011.

With the release date approaching, Universal Pictures has just provided this video interview with Daniel Craig discussing the film. Craig chats about his character, the premise, the movie’s themes, and the love story.

The Plot: The film tells the story of a successful publisher (Craig) who quits a job in New York City to relocate his wife (Weisz) and two daughters to a quaint New England town. But as they settle into their new life, they discover their perfect home was the murder scene of a mother and her two children. And the entire city believes it was at the hands of the husband who survived. When Will investigates the tragedy, his only lead comes from a neighbor (Watts) who was close to the family that died.

As Will and Ann piece together the disturbing puzzle, they discover that the story of the last man to leave Will’s dream house will be just as horrifying to the one who came next.

Rachel Bilson stars in The CW’s new primetime drama Hart of Dixie. The new series will premiere on September 26, 2011.

Rachel Bilson plays Dr. Zoe Hart, Jaime King is Lemon Breeland, Wilson Bethel is Wade Kinsella, and Cress Williams is Lavon Hayes. McKaley Miller stars as Rose, Scott Porter is George Tucker, and Kaitlyn Black is Annabeth.

The Plot: Fast-talking New Yorker and brand new doctor Zoe Hart has it all figured out – after graduating top of her class from medical school, she’ll follow in her father’s footsteps and become a cardio-thoracic surgeon. But when her dreams fall apart, Zoe decides to accept an offer from a stranger, Dr. Harley Wilkes, to work with him at his small practice in Bluebell, Alabama.

Zoe arrives in this small Gulf Coast town only to find that Harley has passed away and left his half of the medical practice to her in his will. She quickly finds that Southern hospitality isn’t always so hospitable – the other doctor in town, Brick Breeland, is less than pleased to be sharing the practice with this young outsider, and his daughter, Lemon, is a Southern belle whose sweet disposition turns sour when she meets Zoe. Zoe’s only allies are the mayor, former football star Lavon Hayes, her bad-boy neighbor Wade Kinsella, and handsome lawyer George Tucker – who just happens to be Lemon’s fiance.

Zoe is out of her element and ready to pack her bags, but a surprise visit by her snobby New York mother leads to Zoe’s decision to stay in Bluebell for a while, discovering small-town life and a side of herself she hadn’t known was there.
