CBS Films Goes Salmon Fishing in the Yemen

Lasse Hallstrom’s Salmon Fishing in the Yemen has been hooked by CBS Films, with Deadline reporting the acquisition was made at the Toronto Film Festival for around $4 million. Salmon Fishing in the Yemen, which stars Ewan McGregor, Emily Blunt and Kristin Scott Thomas and is based on the novel by Paul Torday, debuted at the festival on September 10, 2011.

Update – Sept 13, 2011:

CBS has made the pick up official, confirming today they’ve acquired Salmon Fishing in the Yemen. In the official press release, director Lasse Hallstrom stated, “I am so happy to have the support of the team at CBS Films for the distribution of our labor of love, Salmon Fishing in the Yemen. I had the best of times working on it with producer Paul Webster, writer Simon Beaufoy and the cast, Emily Blunt, Ewan McGregor, Amr Waked and Kristin Scott Thomas.”

“Lasse Hallström has done it again with this beautiful, heartwarming, and elegant picture. The performances are amazing from top to bottom,” commented EVP of Acquisitions Scott Shooman. “We are honored to have the opportunity to bring this extraordinary film to American audiences.”

Salmon Fishing in the Yemen Synopsis from the Toronto Film Festival:

“Ewan McGregor is Fred Jones, a fisheries expert and academic who works for the British government. When he’s approached by Harriet Chetwode-Talbot (Emily Blunt, also appearing at the Festival in Your Sister’s Sister) with a plan to introduce salmon into the waterways of Yemen for the purpose of sport fishing, he laughs off the scheme, claiming it impossible. Harriet acts as the British representative of an amiable and benevolent sheikh (Amr Waked), who fulfills his love of fishing on frequent trips to his estate in the ruggedly gorgeous Scottish highlands. The sheik believes that fishing creates a spiritual connection between humans and nature, and feels that bringing the sport to his country would benefit the people.

While Fred ponders the idea, the proposal catches the ear of the British prime minister’s spokesperson, Bridget Maxwell (Kristin Scott Thomas, who also stars at the Festival in The Woman in the Fifth). Desperate to detract attention from some unwanted publicity, Bridget sees Harriet’s idea as the perfect opportunity to promote what will appear to be a heartfelt story of British goodwill in the Middle East. Despite Fred’s protests, he soon finds himself working on a project that seems not only frivolous but absolutely unfeasible in the arid land of Yemen. His skepticism is matched only by the sheikh’s boundless optimism. As the mission begins to succeed, Fred grows closer to Harriet. Despite the many obstacles that stand in the way of their romance, their relationship affords an unexpected and welcome sense of hope for two lonely individuals.”

‘Spartacus’ Star Andy Whitfield Passes Away at 39

Andy Whitfield as Spartacus

After a brave battle with non-Hodgkin Lymphoma, 39 year old actor Andy Whitfield passed away this morning in Sydney, Australia. Whitfield starred in the first season of Starz’s popular swords and sandals series Spartacus: Blood and Sand, and then was diagnosed with the disease. Following treatment, his cancer went into remission. However, before the second season could get underway, the cancer had returned making it impossible for the well-liked Whitfield to continue with the show.

Chris Albrecht, Starz President and CEO, issued a statement following the news of Whitfield’s death: “We are deeply saddened by the loss of our dear friend and colleague, Andy Whitfield. We were fortunate to have worked with Andy in Spartacus and came to know that the man who played a champion on-screen was also a champion in his own life. Andy was an inspiration to all of us as he faced this very personal battle with courage, strength and grace. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family during this difficult time. He will live on in the hearts of his family, friends and fans.”

Andy Whitfield’s wife, Vashti, issued a statement in which she called her husband a “beautiful young warrior” and said he died in her arms.

Whitfield is survived by his wife and two children. Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this difficult time.

From Starz’s Andy Whitfield Biography:

“Andy Whitfield was born in the U.K., grew up in Wales and studied at Sheffield University in England. He moved to Australia 10 years ago, attended drama school in Sydney and gained work as an actor, while also working as a diagnostic engineer, a job that required him to rappel down tall buildings.”

LAIKA Planning a ‘Wildwood’ Feature Film

Wildwood by Colin Meloy
'Wildwood' by Colin Meloy

Wildwood, the first children’s novel from Colin Meloy (lead singer/songwriter for The Decemberists), has been acquired by the Portland-based animated studio, LAIKA. Meloy’s Wildwood will likely follow in the footsteps of LAIKA’s other film projects – Coraline and the upcoming movie, ParaNorman – as a stop-motion animated feature film.

Wildwood is a marvel, an exquisite, staggering, and lyrical work of art,” stated Travis Knight, President & CEO of LAIKA. “It’s an uncannily perfect fit for LAIKA, commingling the time-honored qualities of classic fantasies and fairy tales with a bold, contemporary sensibility. Colin’s captivating, melodic prose and Carson’s gorgeous, spellbinding illustrations form a rich bounty of ideas, language, and imagery. Wildwood is a wonderful work of literature, and LAIKA is fully committed to honoring it with an exceptional, groundbreaking film.”

Commenting on the LAIKA’s involvement in bringing his book to the big screen, writer Meloy stated, “Hands down, there is no other movie studio in the entire world besides LAIKA that I would entrust Wildwood to. Carson [Ellis] and I were prepared to stonewall any and all suitors for the movie rights, so close was this book to our hearts. However, when LAIKA came calling, our defenses promptly came down. There is no doubt in my mind that they will come to this story with the passion, imagination and general awesomeness required to make this book into a truly beautiful animated film.”

“I’m a stop motion enthusiast,” stated Ellis, “and I’ve been a fan of LAIKA since we saw Coraline a couple of years back. When we visited the studio and saw all the brilliant creative work happening there — someone building a waist-high New England village in painstaking detail, someone else sewing pinhead-sized rivets on tiny blue jeans — we were won over completely. It’s an amazing place staffed by patient, meticulous, super-talented people who wouldn’t work there if they didn’t love stop-motion animation. I’m so excited to see what Wildwood will look like in their hands.”

Wildwood was released by HarperCollins’ Balzer + Bray on August 30, 2011.

More on Wildwood [Courtesy of LAIKA]:

Wildwood, the first book in an epic middle-grade fantasy series full of magic, wonder, and danger set in an alternate version of modern-day Portland, Oregon, tells the story of Prue McKeel, whose ordinary life is changed forever when her younger brother is abducted by a murder of crows and taken to the Impassable Wilderness, an enchanted and forbidding forest on the edge of Portland. No one’s ever gone in — or at least returned to tell of it. Within this secret world, Prue and her friend Curtis embark on a rescue mission and find themselves entwined in a violent struggle for freedom amidst warring creatures, peaceable mystics, and powerful figures with the darkest intentions.

More on Colin Meloy and Carson Ellis:

Colin Meloy once wrote Ray Bradbury a letter, informing him that he “considered himself an author too.” He was 10 years old at the time. Since then, Colin has gone on to be the singer and songwriter for the band The Decemberists, where he channels all of his weird ideas into weird songs. This is his first time channeling those ideas into a novel.

Carson Ellis, who first rose to prominence for creating The Decemberists’ album covers, illustrated the bestsellers The Composer is Dead (Lemony Snicket) and The Mysterious Benedict Society (Trenton Lee Stewart), as well the notable children’s books The Beautiful Stories of Life, Stagecoach Sal and Dillweed’s Revenge.

Colin and Carson live with their son, Hank, in Portland, Oregon, quite near the Impassable Wilderness.

Expendables 2 Starts Filming This Month

Nu Image/Millennium Films announced the slate of projects they’ll be introducing at the Toronto Film Festival, and among the tidbits of news emerging from their press release is confirmation that filming will start mid-September on Expendables 2. Filming will take place on the sequel to The Expendables at Nu Image’s Nu Boyana studios in Sofia. Casting is, according to Nu Image, being finalized but is expected to include Sylvester Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Bruce Willis, Jet Li, Jason Statham, Dolph Lundgren, Mickey Rourke, Terry Crew, Chuck Norris and Jean-Claude Van Damme.

“Everyone is eager to get started on this film, and our distributors are eager as well. The first one was a success for all,” stated Nu Image, Inc./Millennium Films’ Avi Lerner. “TIFF this year is looking very good for us and our films.”

Nu Image/Millennium Films also confirmed details on their other upcoming projects being offered to buyers/distributors at the 2011 Toronto Film Festival:

Straight A’s – A $5 million dramedy starring Anna Paquin, Ryan Phillippe, Luke Wilson, Christa Campbell and directed by James Cox. Filming was just completed in Shreveport, Louisiana on Straight A’s which was written by David Cole and produced by Holly Wiersma, Scoot McNairy, Rene Besson and John Pierce. Wiersma said about the project: “I had a great time making this film. The story is about all relationships, family and friends, and this cast and crew became a family, relationships and all. Plus producing for Avi and Millennium is always a blast.”

Trespass – A thriller starring Nicolas Cage and Nicole Kidman and directed by Joel Schumacher (Cage and Schumacher will attend TIFF on September 14th). Trespass is a home invasion story which “evolves into something far more complicated.”

The Big Wedding – A comedy starring Robert De Niro, Katherine Heigl, Amanda Seyfried, Topher Grace, Susan Sarandon, Diane Keaton and Robin Williams, and written/directed by Justin Zackham. Filming wrapped up last month in Connecticut.

Playing the Field – A romantic comedy starring Gerard Butler, Jessica Biel, Uma Thurman, Judy Greer, with Catherine Zeta-Jones and Dennis Quaid, and directed by Gabriele Muccino. Butler stars as a “retired world famous soccer star who tries to rebuild a relationship with his son and ex-wife by coaching his kid’s soccer team. While soccer is a hands-free sport, the mothers of the other kids can’t keep their hands off the coach, which imperils his plan.”

The Paperboy – An erotic thriller starring Matthew McConaughey, Zac Efron, John Cusack and Nicole Kidman, and directed by Lee Daniels. The Paperboy is based on the novel by Peter Dexter.

Texas Chainsaw Massacre 3D – A horror film starring Alexandrea Daddario, Gunnar Hansen, Thom Barry, Shaun Sipos, Keram Malicki-Sanchez, and Tania Raymonde to be directed by John Luessenhop.

Golgo 13 to Become a Film Franchise

Golgo 13The popular Japanese manga Golgo 13 has been snapped up by Samuel Hadida’s Davis Films to be turned into a string of feature films. Davis Films’ previously adapted Silent Hill and Resident Evil from Japanese properties, and Hadida believes Golgo 13 has the same franchise potential.

Golgo 13 is Japan’s longest-running manga and was written/illustrated by Takao Saito.

“We are unbelievably excited about this great property, and the opportunity to bring it to the big screen,“ Hadida stated in the official announcement. “I have long admired Takao Saito’s great work as one of the top gekiga style artists. We are looking forward to bringing his style sensibilities and this great character to worldwide film audiences.”

More on Golgo 13 [Courtesy of Davis Films]

Golgo 13 was introduced in 1968, and the manga series, including compilation books, has sold over 200 million copies worldwide. It has been made into two live action films (the first starring Ken Takakura and the second starring Sonny Chiba), two animated films, a television series, and various video games. Leed Publishing serves as Saito’s representative and has overseen worldwide licensing of all rights to his work.

Golgo 13, otherwise known as ‘Duke Togo,’ is a hired gun sniper with unbelievable combat skills, a cross between Dirty Harry and James Bond. He is a professional assassin with a strict personal code that makes him a modern day samurai. His world of contract killing is not unlike the complex world of espionage.

Gerard Butler ‘Machine Gun Preacher’ Interview Video

Gerard Butler in Machine Gun Preacher
Gerard Butler in 'Machine Gun Preacher' - © 2011 MGP Productions, LLC. All Rights Reserved.

In this interview video provided by Relativity Media, Gerard Butler talks about his starring role in the dramatic film Machine Gun Preacher based on the real life story of Sam Childers, a former criminal who became the savior of orphans in East Africa. Butler discusses being a part of such an emotional project based on Childers’ life experiences, working with director Marc Forster, spending time with the real Sam Childers, and Jason Keller’s “astonishing” script.

The Plot: When ex-biker-gang member Sam Childers (Butler) makes the life-changing decision to go to East Africa to help repair homes destroyed by civil war, he is outraged by the unspeakable horrors faced by the region’s vulnerable populace, especially the children. Ignoring the warnings of more experienced aide workers, Sam breaks ground for an orphanage where it’s most needed—in the middle of territory controlled by the brutal Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA), a renegade militia that forces youngsters to become soldiers before they even reach their teens.

But for Sam, it is not enough to shelter the LRA’s intended victims. Determined to save as many as possible, he leads armed missions deep into enemy territory to retrieve kidnapped children, restoring peace to their lives—and eventually his own.

The Cast of 'Ringer'

Buffy‘s Sarah Michelle Gellar heads up the cast of the one-hour drama Ringer. Premiering on September 13, 2011, The CW series finds Gellar taking on dual roles as twins.

Season one also stars Ioan Gruffudd as Andrew Martin, Kristoffer Polaha as Henry, Nestor Carbonell as Agent Victor Machado, and Tara Summers as Gemma.

The Plot: Sarah Michelle Gellar stars as a woman who, after witnessing a murder, goes on the run, hiding out by assuming the life of her wealthy identical twin sister – only to learn that her sister’s seemingly idyllic life is just as complicated and dangerous as the one she’s trying to leave behind. Bridget is six months sober and starting to turn her life around when she is the sole witness to a professional hit. Despite the assurances of her FBI protector, Agent Victor Machado, Bridget knows her life is on the line. She flees to New York, telling no one, not even her Narcotics Anonymous sponsor, Malcolm.

In New York, Bridget reunites with her estranged twin, Siobhan. Wealthy, pampered and married to the strikingly handsome Andrew Martin, Siobhan lives what appears to be a fairy tale life – a life where no one knows that Bridget exists. The sisters seem to be mending their frayed relationship, until Siobhan disappears overboard during a boat trip, and Bridget makes the split decision to take on her sister’s identity.

She discovers shocking secrets, not only about her sister and her marriage, but also about Siobhan’s best friend, Gemma, and Gemma’s husband, Henry. And when someone tries to kill Bridget in her sister’s penthouse, she realizes she is no safer as Siobhan than she is as herself.

Alexandre Dumas’ classic tale is brought to life again on the big screen in The Three Musketeers, a 3D action film directed by Paul W. S. Anderson and starring Logan Lerman, Ray Stevenson, Matthew Macfadyen, and Luke Evans.

Anderson – no stranger to action films, having directed Mortal Combat, Soldier, Resident Evil, and 2008’s Death Race – says that for this action-intense movie, no stunt doubles were used and he used real swords. The action ante’s been upped, and sparks actually fly when the blades meet.

The Plot: The hot-headed young D’Artagnan (Logan Lerman) joins forces with three rogue Musketeers (Matthew Macfadyen, Luke Evans and Ray Stevenson) in this reboot of Alexandre Dumas’ story. They must stop the evil Richlieu (Christoph Waltz) and face off with Buckingham (Orlando Bloom) and the treacherous Milady (Milla Jovovich).

Luke Evans (‘Aramis’) says the film brings 21st-century technology to a 400-year-old story, and Orlando Bloom calls The Three Musketeers a “real feast for the eyes.” Check out this behind-the-scenes video featuring clips from the action movie as well as interviews with the cast and director:
