Richard Gere, Topher Grace, and Stephen Moyer star in The Double, a PG-13 thriller from first time feature film director Michael Brandt. The synopsis sounds interesting – a retired CIA agent (Gere) must come out of retirement to hunt down a Soviet assassin believed to have been killed years earlier – however the trailer seems to give too much away…

It appears quite a few of the fall season’s new shows are following in the footsteps of Mad Men, going retro in an attempt to capture an audience. Among the batch of new shows premiering in the next few weeks is Pan Am, a high-flying ABC series set in 1963 – back when we didn’t have to remove our shoes to board a plane. The series follows Pan Am pilots and stewardesses as they “juggle their lives, their loves, their hopes and dreams while flying around the world to glamorous international cities.”

We have to wait until after the series debuts on September 25, 2011 to see if audiences are as ready to embrace the world of airline employees as they have Mad Men‘s advertising executives, but you can check out a clip now for a sneak peek at what’s in store this season:

A star since his first film, Splendor in the Grass, in 1961, Warren Beatty has been said to have demonstrated a greater longevity in movies than any actor of his generation.

Few people have taken so many responsibilities for all phases of the production of films as producer, director, writer, and actor, and few have evidenced so high a level of integrity in a body of work. At least fifteen of his films are often referred to as classics: Bonnie and Clyde, Shampoo, Reds, Heaven Can Wait, Dick Tracy, Bugsy, Bulworth, Splendor in the Grass, All Fall Down, McCabe and Mrs. Miller, The Roman Spring of Mrs. Stone, Mickey One, The Only Game in Town, Lilith, and The Parallax View.

Only Beatty and Orson Welles have been nominated by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences as an actor, a director, a writer, and a producer for the same film. Beatty did it twice, for Heaven Can Wait and again for Reds. Welles once for Citizen Kane.

Beatty has been nominated fifteen times in these categories and eight pictures he has produced have earned 53 nominations. In 1980 he won the Academy Award for Directing and in 2000 was given the Academy’s highest honor, the Irving G. Thalberg Award.

He has won the Best Director Award from the Directors Guild of America and has been nominated twice. He has won the Writers Guild of America Award three times for Best Screenplay and has been nominated four times. He has won sixteen awards from the New York and Los Angeles Film Critics, the National Board of Review, and the Golden Globes. In France he was made a Commander of Arts and Letters in 1990. In Great Britain he has received The British Academy’s highest honor – a Fellowship in 2000.

In Italy he received the David di Donatello award in 1968 and again in 1981 and its Lifetime Achievement Award in 1998. In Spain he was awarded the Donostia Lifetime Achievement Award. The National Association of Theater Owners has honored him as Director of the Year, as Producer of the Year and as Actor of the Year. He has received The Milestone Award from the Producers Guild.

He has received the Board of Governors Award from the American Society of Cinematographers. He was given the Directors Award from the Costume Designers Guild. He was given the Life Achievement Award from the Publicists Guild. He has received the Outstanding Contribution to Cinematic Imagery Award from The Art Directors Guild. He has received the Cecil B. DeMille Award from the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. He has been honored at numerous film festivals throughout the world. In December 2004, he received The Kennedy Center Honor in Washington, D.C. In 2008, Beatty received the American Film Institute’s highest honor, the Lifetime Achievement Award.

Politically active since the 1960’s, he campaigned with Robert Kennedy in his 1968 presidential campaign. That same year he traveled throughout the United States speaking in favor of gun control and against the war in Vietnam. In 1972 he took a year off from motion pictures to campaign with George McGovern.

In 1981, he was a founding board member of the Center for National Policy. He is a founding member of The Progressive Majority, a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, and has participated in the World Economic Forum at Davos, Switzerland.

He is on the Board of Trustees of The Scripps Research Institute and on the Board of Directors of the Motion Picture and Television Fund Foundation. He has received the Eleanor Roosevelt Award from the Americans for Democratic Action, the Brennan Legacy Award from the Brennan Center for Justice at the New York University School of Law, and the Philip Burton Public Service Award from The Foundation For Taxpayer and Consumer Rights.

With his wife, Annette Bening, he received the Caritas Award from the Saint John’s Health Center and the Stem Cell Champions Award from the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

In multiple forums he has addressed campaign finance reform, the increasing disparity of wealth, universal health care and the need for the Democratic Party to return to its roots.

He was born in Richmond, Virginia. He and Annette live in Los Angeles with their four children.

‘Drive’ Film Clips Featuring Ryan Gosling and Carey Mulligan

We’ve seen Ryan Gosling in action as a stunt driver who moonlights driving getaway cars, but these new clips FilmDistrict has just released from Drive are much quieter in tone.

The Plot: Ryan Gosling stars as a Los Angeles wheelman for hire, stunt driving for movie productions by day and steering getaway vehicles for criminal operations by night. A loner by nature, Driver can’t help falling in love with his beautiful but vulnerable neighbor Irene (Carey Mulligan), a young mother dragged into a dangerous criminal underworld by the return of ex-convict husband Standard (Oscar Isaac).

After a heist operation intended to help Standard pay off protection money spins out of control, Driver finds himself driving defense for the girl he loves, tailgated by a syndicate of deadly serious criminals (Albert Brooks and Ron Perlman). When the gangsters reveal that they’re after more than the bag of money in his trunk—that they’re coming straight for Irene and her son—Driver is forced to shift gears and go on the offense.

John Scheinfeld Will Direct Elvis Biopic

Elvis Still Taking Care of Business

Documentary filmmaker John Scheinfeld will be tackling his first feature film biopic with Fame & Fortune, an insider’s look at the King of Rock ‘n Roll, Elvis Presley. The film will be based on Presley’s bodyguard Sonny West’s book, Elvis: Still Taking Care of Business, with RLF Victor Productions Ltd releasing the film in 2012 to coincide with the 35th anniversary of Elvis’ death.

Scheinfeld’s documentary film credits include The Divine Bette Midler, Who Is Harry Nilsson (And Why Is Everybody Talkin’ About Him), The U.S. vs John Lennon, and We Believe.

RLF Victor Productions president Cindy Friedlander wrote the screenplay with Michael Schlau and Sonny West.

In the press release announcing his involvement, Scheinfeld stated, “It is a great honor to direct the first feature film about Elvis, arguably the most influential, beloved and popular entertainer of the 20th century. I’m very excited to work with the RLF Victor team to bring this compelling and deeply emotional story to the big screen.”

“John Scheinfeld is the premier director of popular culture bios on music icons,” said Ricki Landers Friedlander, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of RLF Victor Productions. “Elvis Presley and Sonny West’s story, which requires great sensitivity and understanding, couldn’t be in more capable hands.”

The Story: “Never before has Elvis ‘behind the scenes’ been as intimately revealed. Sonny West, as Presley’s bodyguard and best friend from 1960 to 1976, and who was an integral member of the famed singer’s ‘Memphis Mafia,’ provides a unique fly-on-the-wall perspective on his relationship with Elvis through Elvis’ rocket ride to fame, professional ups and downs, mercurial temper, generous spirit, loves and losses. Through this journey the panorama of calamitous events that precipitated Presley’s tragic decline will finally be told.”

This is Only News Because It’s Gerard Butler…

…and we like Gerard Butler, otherwise the press release would have triggered a ‘delete’ response. The press release being discussed had an eye-catching headline that, at a quick glance, made it appear as though the talented Scot had landed a new film role. But no, that wasn’t the case. Actually, the press release was all about the Geneva-based fine watchmaker Roger Dubuis and how Butler’s enamored with the company’s watches. Butler even took a tour of the manufacturing facilities and said he was “blown away” by it all.

“Watch making is just like the cinema, it hides a precise mechanism which must then generate emotion,” stated Butler. “The world of Roger Dubuis, the arrival of its collections, like spaces of freedom, perfectly matches my principles. You need to take chances in life. And always push yourself.”

I warned you this wasn’t serious news…but it is an opportunity to show off a photo of Gerard Butler:

Fender just added a new guitar to its catalog with the addition of the “Kurt Cobain Jaguar” model. The guitar was modeled on the 1965 Jaguar Kurt Cobain played with Nirvana during the early ’90s.

According to Fender’s press statement, their craftsmen were able to reproduce “Cobain’s battle-hardened left-handed Jaguar down to the last unusual detail, including its worn finish, dual humbucking pickups and unique electronics and controls (which were already in place when Kurt acquired the guitar in summer 1991).”

The Kurt Cobain Jaguar has an alder body with “aged finish and hardware treatment, bound fretboard with pearloid dot markers, Stratocaster headstock shape with 1950s-style spaghetti logo under the finish, DiMarzio® humbucking DP103 PAF 36th Anniversary neck pickup and DP100 Super Distortion bridge pickup, triple knurled chrome-dome knob configuration (volume-volume-tone), three-position toggle switch, black chrome Adjusto-Matic™ bridge and Gotoh® sealed tuners.”

Regis Philbin Reveals His Retirement Date

Regis Philbin and Kelly Ripa
‘Live! With Regis and Kelly’ Co-hosts Regis Philbin and Kelly Ripa

During today’s Live! With Regis and Kelly show Regis Philbin revealed his last day on the popular program will be Friday, November 18, 2011. The 80-year-old announced his desire to retire back in January, but it wasn’t until today that he confirmed exactly when he’d be signing off from the ABC series for good.

Producer Michael Gelman said that as of right now, Philbin’s replacement is not in place. Among the celebs rumored to be in the running to take over are Howie Mandel and Survivor‘s Jeff Probst.

Philbin kidded his co-host Kelly Ripa saying she’ll be trying out new men to take his place, but no matter who finally lands the co-hosting gig, they’ll have big shoes to fill. Philbin’s been appearing on the daytime TV series since 1983 and was joined in 1985 by Kathie Lee Gifford. Ripa took over co-hosting duties when Gifford left in 2001.

Official Synopsis: A proud, born-and-bred Jersey girl, Stephanie Plum’s got plenty of attitude, even if she’s been out of work for the last six months and just lost her car to a debt collector. Desperate for some fast cash, Stephanie turns to her last resort: convincing her sleazy cousin to give her a job at his bail bonding company…as a recovery agent. True, she doesn’t even own a pair of handcuffs and her weapon of choice is pepper spray, but that doesn’t stop Stephanie from taking on Vinny’s biggest bail-jumper: former vice cop and murder suspect Joe Morelli – yup, the same sexy, irresistible Joe Morelli who seduced and dumped her back in high school.

Nabbing Morelli would be satisfying payback – and a hefty payday – but as Stephanie learns the ins and outs of becoming a recovery agent from Ranger, a hunky colleague who’s the best in the business, she also realizes the case against Morelli isn’t airtight. Add to the mix her meddling family, a potentially homicidal boxer, witnesses who keep dying and the problem of all those flying sparks when she finds Morelli himself…well, suddenly Stephanie’s new job isn’t nearly as easy as she thought.
